RICHARD KAY

I would like to welcome the staff, players and committee of Shortwood United to BHP for todays Hellenic division 1 league game.

Shortwood are one of probably 8 teams that are bang in not only the promotion race but also the title race. The league is so tight with everyone beating everyone week to week It's another really tough game in what has been a really tough run of fixtures. We have played 4 of the top 8 recently but given a really good account of ourselves We have performed really well by and large against the top sides in the division

We are now a very competitive outfit and in good form. Since the end of August we have only lost around 4 from 12 games in all competitions which is excellent progress for a newly promoted team. We are just playing what's in front of us with the handbrake off We are scoring goals and having a right go which is all I ask The only time I'm ever disappointed is if we approach a game passive and without energy I can only think of our first half at Hartpury recently where I was really disappointed with our mindset and approach. By and large for the best part of 3 months since our nightmare start in August we have really had a go and played with a lot of tempo and energy. My teams are at theIr best when we are high energy and rock and roll

The first half of the season was always going to be about us sightseeing and seeing what the league is about. We now know what the league is about and I fully expect us to just go steaming into teams win, lose or draw If you're looking for entertainment BHP is the place to be We're probably not consistent enough to be amongst the best teams in this division but we are one of the most entertaining for sure.

The atmosphere at BHP has been superb recently with attendances rising all the time. None more so than Saturday for our remembrance service. I was a very proud manager and the club did the town and community proud. Mike and Harry's tributes were outstanding and heartfelt, topped off by a great performance of the last post The club has so much heart and soul and its always been my honour and privilege to be manager. I will soon be going into my 5th year as manager of the club We have achieved so much but there are exciting times ahead for the club as we head into 2023

Enjoy the game, Rich

HEAD COACH
"We are now a very competitive outfit and are in good form. We are scoring goals and having a go which is all I ask."

SIMON BARBY

We welcome Shortwood United to BHP, we're looking forward to getting back into league action!

This will be a tough game as Shortwood are doing well in the league and have had some good results. Both teams go into this game with good form Southam always love a good challenge to overcome teams in this league, so I fancy our chances of getting three points.

Good team spirit and a happy Southam squad winning games and having good momentum going forward, we hope to continue scoring goals and enjoying our football!

We focus on the game we played last week in the cup, in which we progressed into the next round with a good win and a great performance from Jay Lawes scoring a hat trick! This will help send his confidence sky high, and I'm sure he'll score more and more each week

We've seen some very solid performances from Southam recently as well as some very good individual performances and a great team effort which grows week on week.

Now back to this Saturdays game! One of the lads I've been playing football with from the start of the rebuild of Southam has only gone and got 50 appearances for the club Ethan Champkins!

He's a very good player and a very cheeky chappy on and off the pitch He can be a very emotional player but he's very talented and wil go far. Congratulations Ethan!

As we look forward to the game on Saturday, I think it'll be a fast paced game and both teams will want to get the three points to climb the league table

We're also hoping to see all the regulars, and some new faces, down BHP to enjoy the game, as well as some food and drink hope you enjoy the hospitality!

Thanks, Simon

TEAM CAPTAIN

SOUTHAM UNITED 4 (Dixon 45+1', Lawes 14', 44', 68'

CHALFONT WASPS 1 Mpofu 83'

A Jay Lawes hat trick helped Southam United enjoy a comfortable passage into the next round of the Bluefin Sports Challenge Cup with a 4 1 win over Hellenic Division Two East side Chalfont Wasps.

The early exchanges favoured the visitors with keeper Lewis Hudson tipping a 9th minute effort over the crossbar, but it was Southam who took the lead five minutes later through Jay Lawes.

Hudson was in action again in the 33rd minute, getting down well to save a shot from Nicholas Pereira and, at the other end, Chalfont keeper Benjamin Robson parried a header from Adam Neale.

Lawes struck again a minute before half time to double Southam's lead and they went further ahead in the first minute of added time when leading scorer Josh Dixon struck from inside the box to make it 3-0 at the break.

Southam

It was 4 0 in the 68th when Lawes completed a hat-trick, converting a penalty after Benjamin was judged to have fouled substitute Bradley Goddard who had come on for Shane Osborne.

With Southam cruising to victory, more substitutions followed as manager Richard Kay was able to give players game time but, after Goddard had gone close with a diving header, Chalfont pulled a goal back in the 83rd minute through Nigel Mpofu and nearly got another a minute later, only to be denied by replacement keeper Ryan King, who tipped a shot over the bar.

Southam are at home for the third week in a row on Saturday when they take on Shortwood United, kick off at 3:00pm.

Ethan Champkins

"Firstly, congratulations to Ethan on his 50th appearance for the club. It's been three and a half years in the making with Ethan having been on this club journey since 2019.

Ethan was one of the very first players at our open trials back in 2018, with a view to joining the club for its relaunch in 2019. It was clear he was a very talented young player who just needed an opportunity. I can remember the meeting at BHP where it was my pleasure to offer Ethan a squad place for the 2019/20 season.

I have signed many players since the relaunch in 2019 for the club, but the players who were part of that relaunch will forever have a special place in my heart. As everyone sees the progress with the club today, 2019 seems a million miles away. We could not play at BHP for our first season due to development and pitch issues. We played the entire 19/20 season at Southam College. We had one brand new Adidas kit then next to nothing. The players, including Ethan, went on to smash every club record standings; wins on the bounce, longest undefeated home record, defensive record, goals scored, the list is endless.

Ethan, among others, is a club legend who has taken this club from oblivion back to step 6 semi professional football. Not only has Ethan contributed so much to the club since 2019, but a special mention must also go to his family.

Alongside playing with his brother Ellis, who is also part of the 2019 cohort, mum Sarah, dad Ryan and girlfriend Mia have also been the foundation on which the club is built today Sarah and Mia did so much on matchdays for the club and for me that was priceless in just running a first team Sarah has been one of the club's biggest supporters, both home and away, since the relaunch in 2019 Mia has been such a support to Ethan over the years, and like many of the girlfriends who attend the games, has been an integral part of the Southam family

Dad Ryan came into the club to support Ethan and the club. Back in 2019 I quickly needed support in the dugout. Ryan helped me as my assistant for the odd game, but in November 2019 came onboard as full time assistant manager. Over the years Ryan has become an integral part of the club and my staff. Simply put, the club would not be where it is today without Ryan's loyalty, respect and hardwork over the years. In signing Ethan back in 2019, I have also gained a very good friend for life.

Ethan, congratulations on your 50th appearance for the club, and thank you for your loyalty and performances over the years. Also thank you to the wonderful Champkins family for your love and hardwork over the years.

Enjoy the day, Rich

SOUTHAM UNITED FC

Southam United was founded in 1905 following the amalgamation of two village teams. Southam United or "Saints" as they are known has a long and distinguished history.

From 1947 to 1956 the club won most of the titles in the then prestigious Coventry and North Warwickshire League culminating in the Coventry Evening Telegraph Cup.

Saints moved into the Midland Combination in 1980/81 and immediately won the Division 3 title and completed the double by winning the Vase Final with a 3 1 victory over Kingsbury United. When the League was reorganised in 1983/84, United were invited into the Premier Division but after struggling for several seasons they were downgraded to Division 1 when it was discovered that their pitch was now too short owing to the construction of a bowling green next to it. It took until 1995/96 for United to get back into Premier Division football. In 1997/98 Saints enjoyed their most successful season in the Midland Combination finishing as Premier Division Runners Up and winning the Birmingham County FA Vase with a convincing 3 0 victory over Shirley Town.

All time leading goalscorer (over 1,000 goals) and record appearance holder is Bob Hancocks who served the Club loyally in virtually every capacity. In 2002 Bob and his wife Anne received a presentation from the Club to mark their over 50 years of loyal service to Southam United and their contributions to the game were finally recognised by the FA Long Service Award in June 2012

In 2001 the Club merged with Southam Town FC, a progressive junior club formed in 1972 which, amongst other things, has pioneered Ladies and Girls football in Warwickshire Long-term development plans have now been put into place to strengthen the football base in Southam both on and off the field.

SOUTHAM UNITED FC

The Club is an FA Charter Standard Community Club Currently, the Club's range of junior teams runs from the Mini Soccer School (boys and girls of 5 years upwards) being introduced to the game in a fun and safe environment through the junior age groups up to the Under 16's with some 250 players participating in coaching sessions and games throughout the season. The club also maintains a successful Wildcats and Girls section, encouraging more girls into the game and hoping to retain them for the future. This is with a view to eventually growing our own Ladies team.

Southam United are also fully committed to supporting it's volunteer coaches and developing homegrown officials. All managers and coaches are supported in following their ambitions to complete FA coaching courses and as of the 21/22 season, the club has supported 3 of its former junior players to undertake their referee qualifications. With more to follow subject to courses being available.

First Team results from 1998 to 2004 were largely disappointing. A sixth placed MidComb Premier Division finish in 2004/05 augured well for the future but could not be improved upon in season 2005/06 thanks to inconsistent league form. There was, however, some comparative success in Cup competitions, including an appearance in the first ever Cup Final at the Ricoh Arena, when Saints finished as Runners Up to Coundon Court in The Coventry Charity Cup.

Cup success was achieved in 2008/09 as the Club lifted the BCFA Midweek Floodlit Challenge Cup with a convincing 3 1 victory over Darlaston Town and again in 2010/11 with victory in the Telegraph Challenge Cup Final at The Ricoh Arena. Runners Up spot in the Premier Division was achieved in 2011/12 when the team fell away with the finishing line in sight.

In both 2012/13 and 2013/14 the Club were runners up in the BCFA Midweek Floodlit Cup; and in 2014/15 were beaten finalists in the Les James Cup at Walsall's Banks's Stadium and the Coventry Charity Cup at Coventry City's Ricoh Arena.

Following a period of transition for the First Team and an absence of several seasons, the First Team successfully returned in 2018/19 playing in the Hellenic league and managed by Rich Kay. Since this time, and despite the challenge of COVID, the team have gone from strength to strength, gaining promotion and as of 2021/22 season are now play Oxford Senior League Premier, from where they are looking to springboard to the next level.

SHORTWOOD UNITED

Shortwood United Football Club was formed in 1900 and since then have played at 4 different grounds, Nailsworth Playing Field, Table Land, Wallow Green and finally at our current ground, Meadowbank

The club has been at Meadowbank since 1972, and includes an all weather training area opened by the late Ted Croker Gradual improvements over the years culminated in a major enhancement in 2009 to meet ground grading criteria for any future promotions.

League football was commenced in the Stroud League where following continued success during the 1970s promotion was gained to the Northern Senior and then the Gloucestershire County League.Promotion to the Hellenic league was achieved in 1981 only to be relegated in our first season but finishing runners up the following year ensured promotion straight back In 1983 we won the Hellenic Division One Cup and GFA Trophy and in the following year won the Hellenic League It was a further six years until success was realised again when the treble of League winners, GFA Trophy and Stroud Charity Cup was completed

The 2007/08 season started a resurgence in Shortwood’s fortunes in finishing 5th in the league and winning the supplementary cup, defeating Ardley 4 2 in the final The subsequent season pushed our success even further when following a good run in the FA Cup and semi finalists in the League Cup, we pressed the eventual Champions Hungerford to the final day of the season where we lost out on goal difference after amassing 99 pts and scoring 99 goals. Shortwood’s fine form continued into the next season when they again finished second in the league to Almondsbury, and runners up in the GFA Trophy again to Almondsbury, had good FA Cup and Vase runs and reached the final of the Floodlit cup. Having lost the away leg 3 0 to Reading Town they produced one of the most exciting comebacks and entertaining matches ever seen at Meadowbank where the score remained at 0 0 till the 67th minute when the deadlock was broken and Shortwood ran out 5 0 winners (AET).

Shortwood’s league campaign in 2011 was a disappointment by their own high standards, but more silverware was added in the shape of the GFA Trophy after a 1 0 win over Tuffley Rovers in the final.

2011 12 season, however, was pivotal in the Club’s history! Not only did they reach the quarter final of the FA Vase, they also reached the final of the Hellenic League Floodlit Cup and the GFA Trophy Final Most important was their league position where they finished 2nd by 1 point behind Oxford City Nomads. With Nomad’s not applying for promotion, and with Shortwood filling all the relevant criteria, they were promoted to the Southern League for the first time in their history!

The 2012 13 season was again a successful one Following a disappointing early exit from the FA cup the club had a good run in the FA Trophy including a magnificent away victory at premier league side Weymouth on the way. In their first season in the Southern League they finished a creditable eighth position

The 2013 14 season saw Shortwood progress further in the FA Cup than ever before! Early wins over Egham and Aylesbury put them up against Conference South outfit Dorchester and a 1 0 away win, and a further 1 0 win at Didcot put them into uncharted waters of the fourth qualifying round where they drew Conference side Aldershot at Meadowbank. A late, but deserved, equaliser gave them a replay and a heroic 2 1 win sparked wild celebrations

TODAY'S OPPOSITION

SHORTWOOD UNITED

A home draw pitted Shortwood against League 1 side Port Vale in front of a record crowd of 1,247 plus a live television audience courtesy of BT Sport. Shortwood bowed out but with the plaudits their cup run earned ringing in their ears.

The league season was also highly successful with a sixth placed finish, one point outside the play off positions.

2014 15 failed to reach the heights of the previous season with many players moving on to higher things but for most of the season a play off place looked possible until a decline in form towards the end of the season resulted in an 11th place finish

2015 16 continued Shortwood’s continued stability in the Southern League as they finished the season 7th in the table with 78 points and the end of the season saw the end of an era as joint Manager John Evans retired after 20 seasons involvement with Shortwood and the club moved forward with Alex Sykes now in sole charge 2016 17 Was a strange season with the Wood exiting the FA Cup and the FA Trophy at the first hurdle and showing inconsistent league form but despite that they managed to finish a more than respectable 9th

Paul ‘Des’ Meredith took over the management reins at the start of season 2017 18. In 2017 18 The club had an excellent run in the FA Trophy and produced some excellent results in the league interspersed with some heavy defeats but this was only to be expected with a very young side but throughout the year they strived to play football the Shortwood way. After Christmas Shortwood faced a difficult dilemma The ever increasing demands of the FA around ground gradings and the loss of their major sponsor left the club with no choice but to resign from the Southern League and they applied to the FA to be placed in the Toolstation Western League and they were successful in that application Des Meredith did not feel that he could carry on with a complete rebuild of the side and departed and the club moved on with Jason Scrivens and Joey Tustain taking the helm. They did a tremendous job getting a squad together in next to no time in almost impossible circumstances

Shortwood finished bottom of the Toolstation Premier in 2018 19 and we were relegated and moved to the Hellenic Div 1 West, but the future is more optimistic than for a very long time Shortwood’s two youth sidesenjoyed an incredibly successful season and with the reintroduction of a Development side for season 2019 / 20 the club is rebuilding and giving young local players a complete chance to progress Mat Blythe was added as joint manager with Jason Scrivens, and Simon Blythe was added as 1st team Coach. While Chris Hicks and Shane Mathews took the reins of the Development side

The COVID pandemic saw the cancellation of the season 2019 20 in March 2020 with the first team lying in a healthy 4th place in the league and the development team beginning to show some late form During the enforced break Mat Blythe became sole first team manager, while Jason Scrivens took the reins of the now Shortwood Reserves side with Will Dunn coming as Coach Season 20 21 was also curtailed and hardly ever got going Shortwood have retained most of last season’s squad and have added a few exciting additions They have also strengthened the Management team with Neil Long coming in as number two and Josh Loveridge as 1st Team Coach Rich Cullimore has taken the reins as Reserve team manager With the club also starting an Under 18 side in the floodlit league this season Jason Scrivens moves up as Director of Football overseeing the whole club. In 21 22 Wood never fulfilled their potential and towards the end of the season Wood made the decision to replace the first team management and Ian Soule came in with a wealth of experience behind him and Lewis Fogg came in as his number two. Foggy is an exciting coach and the two of them are a perfect fit for each other. In these turbulent times the club moves on with hope for an exciting season for both its senior sides and the flourishing youth set up.
