A warm welcome to the staff, players and committee of Kidlington Res, for todays Hellenic League game.
It was only a few weeks ago that we played Kidlington in the Hellenic midweek cup which was a very entertaining game. Every game in this league, home or away, is tough You have to be at the races week in week out to earn points
Our last home game against Shortwood was probably the best game I have managed at BHP The atmosphere was electric, especially during the second half The second half was one of the best games I have seen for a long time Two good teams just having a right go As much as results are important, it's always been a big factor for me to play entertaining front foot football Whether clubs get 50, 500 or 50,000 through the gate, home supporters can always be the 12th man.
The club marketing and advertising has been excellent, with so many people behind the scenes continuing to drive and move the club forwards Gates are continuing to rise all the time This is due to a real connection again developing between the community and the club and also the quality of football and matchdays at BHP Being biased, our hospitality has to be up there with the best in non league.
Football is like swings and roundabouts. Last home game we suffered heartbreak with a 99th minute equaliser Last Saturday, we snatched a 96th minute winner We were by no means at our best with a really depleted squad, but it was a performance again full of resilience, heart and team spirit Stonehouse is a tough place to go, a long travel to the Cotswolds and a dogged team, where at home they have taken most of their points and the top teams have struggled
We just need to keep the momentum going and see where it takes us
Your support has been fundamental in our recent progress and from myself, the staff and the players, keep being loud and getting right behind the boys
Enjoy the game!

"Keep being loud and getting right behind the boys!"
This week we welcome Kidlington to BHP. Kidlington have been playing well recently, so this will be another tricky game, but we are up to the task of getting all three points. We have been through lots this season, highs and lows, cup games and league games, but we have a strong platform to build on now.
We have had a continuously winning streak lately, and will go into today's game with confidence and a willing mentality to get three points on the table, and to boost our league standings!
Last Saturday, we played away to Stonehouse. An hour and a half trip to them was the first battle we had to conquer, plus we were down to a smaller squad due to holidays and injuries. But the players who travelled all battled for each other and got around We got two late goals to have a great comeback from 1 0 down! Fantastic team effort and desire!
The new signings coming in have done tremendously on their debuts! They will no doubt strengthen the team!
We have recently been putting on a show in the last five minutes of the game, not sure why but it shows our fitness levels and our desire to play to the final whistle.
We hope to see as many people as possible come down to support us, and enjoy the hospitality, the drink, the food and a great game!
Thanks, Simon
"The new signings coming in have done tremendously on their debuts! They will no doubt strengthen the team!"
HELLENIC LEAGUE DIVISION 1 BEN'S TAKEAWAY STADIUM, 26.11.22
STONEHOUSE TOWN 1 Keveren 22'
SOUTHAM UNITED 2
Watkin 85', Osborne 92'
Southam United made one of their longest trips of the season to Stroud in Gloucestershire to take on Stonehouse Town at the Ben's Takeaway Stadium and, after trailing at the break, struck twice in the second half to take home the points.
Manager Richard Kay fielded a much changed side from the week before, with former Northampton Town academy midfielder Jai Newell Holley and forward Johnny Adair making their debuts.
Southam fell behind in the 22nd minute to a Lee Keveren goal, but central defender Craig Watkin brought them level in the second half. It looked as if the points would be shared, but Shane Osborne struck in the second minute of added time to clinch victory and lift his side to 11th place.
The week before, Southam had lost two points when Shortwood United
equalised in added time, but it worked in their favour here as Osborne secured maximum points in the very last minute.
"One of those ugly wins away from home which was really pleasing" said Kay.
"Sometimes it's about the result and not the performance. With such a depleted squad we were always going to be very disjointed, but, again, our immense team spirit and fitness told.
We have played much better and lost, or had points snatched away from us recently. We create lots of chances and play right to the end, which always gives us a chance. The players are learning all the time."

Southam United: Hudson, Dunn (Drummond), Stewart, Barby (C), Watkin, Ellis Champkins, Ethan Champkins, Osborne, Adair (Goddard), Newell Holley, Dixon Subs not used: KingSoutham United was founded in 1905 following the amalgamation of two village teams. Southam United or "Saints" as they are known has a long and distinguished history.
From 1947 to 1956 the club won most of the titles in the then prestigious Coventry and North Warwickshire League culminating in the Coventry Evening Telegraph Cup.
Saints moved into the Midland Combination in 1980/81 and immediately won the Division 3 title and completed the double by winning the Vase Final with a 3 1 victory over Kingsbury United. When the League was reorganised in 1983/84, United were invited into the Premier Division but after struggling for several seasons they were downgraded to Division 1 when it was discovered that their pitch was now too short owing to the construction of a bowling green next to it. It took until 1995/96 for United to get back into Premier Division football. In 1997/98 Saints enjoyed their most successful season in the Midland Combination finishing as Premier Division Runners Up and winning the Birmingham County FA Vase with a convincing 3 0 victory over Shirley Town.
All time leading goalscorer (over 1,000 goals) and record appearance holder is Bob Hancocks who served the Club loyally in virtually every capacity. In 2002 Bob and his wife Anne received a presentation from the Club to mark their over 50 years of loyal service to Southam United and their contributions to the game were finally recognised by the FA Long Service Award in June 2012
In 2001 the Club merged with Southam Town FC, a progressive junior club formed in 1972 which, amongst other things, has pioneered Ladies and Girls football in Warwickshire Long-term development plans have now been put into place to strengthen the football base in Southam both on and off the field.
The Club is an FA Charter Standard Community Club Currently, the Club's range of junior teams runs from the Mini Soccer School (boys and girls of 5 years upwards) being introduced to the game in a fun and safe environment through the junior age groups up to the Under 16's with some 250 players participating in coaching sessions and games throughout the season. The club also maintains a successful Wildcats and Girls section, encouraging more girls into the game and hoping to retain them for the future. This is with a view to eventually growing our own Ladies team.
Southam United are also fully committed to supporting it's volunteer coaches and developing homegrown officials. All managers and coaches are supported in following their ambitions to complete FA coaching courses and as of the 21/22 season, the club has supported 3 of its former junior players to undertake their referee qualifications. With more to follow subject to courses being available.
First Team results from 1998 to 2004 were largely disappointing. A sixth placed MidComb Premier Division finish in 2004/05 augured well for the future but could not be improved upon in season 2005/06 thanks to inconsistent league form. There was, however, some comparative success in Cup competitions, including an appearance in the first ever Cup Final at the Ricoh Arena, when Saints finished as Runners Up to Coundon Court in The Coventry Charity Cup.
Cup success was achieved in 2008/09 as the Club lifted the BCFA Midweek Floodlit Challenge Cup with a convincing 3 1 victory over Darlaston Town and again in 2010/11 with victory in the Telegraph Challenge Cup Final at The Ricoh Arena. Runners Up spot in the Premier Division was achieved in 2011/12 when the team fell away with the finishing line in sight.
In both 2012/13 and 2013/14 the Club were runners up in the BCFA Midweek Floodlit Cup; and in 2014/15 were beaten finalists in the Les James Cup at Walsall's Banks's Stadium and the Coventry Charity Cup at Coventry City's Ricoh Arena.
Following a period of transition for the First Team and an absence of several seasons, the First Team successfully returned in 2018/19 playing in the Hellenic league and managed by Rich Kay. Since this time, and despite the challenge of COVID, the team have gone from strength to strength, gaining promotion and as of 2021/22 season are now play Oxford Senior League Premier, from where they are looking to springboard to the next level.
Kidlington FC was founded in 1909 and played local village football where rivalry was so keen that players had to prove they were residents of the village for whom they played In 1945, Kidlington moved from village football to play in the Oxford City Junior League, with a good deal of success . By 1951 the Oxfordshire Senior League was entered, where stronger competition was provided by the likes of Witney Town, Morris Motors, Pressed Steel and Thame United.
In 1953 The Hellenic League was formed and the Oxon Senior League lost some of its stronger clubs to the new league. Kidlington won the Senior League that season and joined the new league in 1954. Early days in the Hellenic League showed quite clearly the difference in standard Kidlington however, maintained a Premier Division place for a time, but spent most of the 60’s in Division One. The 70’s started with ‘The Greens’ winning the County Intermediate Cup. In 1976 77 a squad of good young players produced what was Kidlington’s best ever run in an FA competition The team played every round bar one away from home and reached the last 16 in the FA Vase, eventually bowing out to Gosport Borough. The nucleus of this side eventually gained promotion back to the Premier Division in 1979 80
The 80’s were pretty uneventful and saw Kidlington return to Division One of the Hellenic League The early 90’s were steady In season 1994 95, Martin Bakers Reserve side did the League and Cup double bringing some long awaited silverware back to the club, and an upturn in the first team fortunes occurred after Karl Grossmann was appointed manager, achieving top 6 finishes in four successive seasons.
The new millennium saw a major overhaul of the committee and a new Chairman in Geoff Talboys. In 2004 05, under the guidance of ex player Kevin Walton, the first team finished in third place and achieved promotion back into the Hellenic Premier Division. With promotion came a struggle with the considerable difference in the standard of football and the team finished in a relegation position. However a national non league restructure saved us.
In 2007/08 , First Team silverware arrived for the first time in over 30 years when we won the Floodlit Trophy under manager Paul Lee. There were additional honours that season with the Reserves winning Reserve Division One for a second consecutive season, the Youth team winning the Oxfordshire U18 Youth Cup, and Kidlington Veterans retaining their Veteran League crown.
In 2009 10 came a new Chairman, Lloyd Wray, and a new management team Ex player Gordon Geary was recruited to look after 1st team affairs and Barry Hiles to run the Reserve team.
Season 2010 11 saw the club achieve its most successful season ever, finishing seventh in the Premier Division, and a superb effort by all saw us play a very strong Oxford United team at the Kassam Stadium in the Final of the Oxfordshire Senior Cup, where unfortunately we lost We did win some silverware though, beating Purton 3 0 in the final of the Supplementary Cup.
In December of season 2011 12 Gordon and Barry resigned and two senior players Danny Leggett and Christian Perkins stepped forward to guide the club through until the end of the season with the club just maintaining its Hellenic Premier Division status
For season 2013 14 the club installed Martin Wilkinson as First Team manager and finished sixth in the league, making club history. They also reached the Senior Cup Final again, but lost to Ardley United.
Season 2014 15 saw the team finish in our highest ever league position of fourth. Season 2015 16 was a dream come true for everyone at KFC, with Wilkinson and his team of Paul Harwood, Julian McCalmon and Jermaine McSporran, leading our 1st team to the Hellenic League Premier Division title and promotion to the Southern League. We also had our best ever run in the FA Vase where we reached the last eight and had a very healthy run in the FA Cup, losing eventually to Conference side Gloucester City.
Season 2016 17, was our first at level 4 of the football pyramid in the Evo Stik League South Division One Central but, due to work commitments, Wilkinson resigned after a month. Jermaine McSporran took over as Caretaker Manager until the club appointed Julian McCalmon as our new Manager, with McSporran and Paul Harwood as his assistants The new manager and the team had a good season at this higher level and eventually finished in mid table Our reserves with Nick East as Manager, had a great season winning the Reserve Challenge Cup and finishing as runners up in the Hellenic League Division 2 West
Due to the geographical implications from promotion/relegation, for season 2017 18 we were transferred across to the South West Division. Our reserve team achievded senior status with promotion to Uhlsport Hellenic Division One West and were also re branded as the “Development Team “
For season 2018-19, McCalmon resigned and Ady Fuller was appointed as First Team Manager He had to form a completely new squad ahead of the season, and due to another F.A. national restructure we transferred back to South Division One Central. After a poor start the manager resigned in mid October and we re instated Julian McCalmon with Joe Davies & Elliot Osborne Ricketts as his assistants We avoided relegation on the last day of the season.
McCalmon resigned again in January 2020 and was replaced by Ben Sadler, assisted by Paul Braithwaite. The pair led Wantage Town to promotion as Hellenic League Champions in 2019. After two seasons severely disrupted by Covid 19, 2021/22 proved challenging. A horrific injury list meant we struggled to establish a settled squad and we spent much of the season with the threat of relegation hanging over us. It is great credit to the management and players that we survived, finally finishing in 17th position. Pre season has been very positive and we are looking forward to a more successful year, led by joint managers Ben Sadler and Paul Braithwaite and assisted by Mark Massingham.
The Reserve team were moved from the Hellenic League to the Spartan South Midlands League for the 2021/22 season and had a difficult time, eventually just managing to avoid relegation. We have been moved back to the Hellenic League this season and are optimistic of being competitive with a more settled squad under the management of Nick East and Matt Stowell. Disappointingly both resigned at the end of September. Brad Chalmers has been appointed as the new manager Brad has had two stints as a player at Kidlington and was a great asset to the club on both occasions.
