Matchday Programme
A warm welcome to the staff, players and committee of Cheltenham Saracens for today’s league game at BHP.
It’s another new club that we are playing for the first time in our clubs history. It has been very enjoyable to play new clubs and visit new grounds so far this season. It really has felt like a fresh start to life back at step 6
We are currently on a great run of 5 wins out of 6 in all competitions. We go into today’s game with a lot of confidence and momentum. The squad is looking very settled and cohesive. With a couple of players away, it’s an opportunity for a few to stake a claim in the starting 11 and come into the matchday squad.
There is now a much better level of competition for places which in turn will drive better performance. There is now a healthy dog-eat-dog environment within the changing room where only performances at training and matchdays will dictate selection.
Last week was probably our best performance of the season to run out 8-1 winners. I have to be honest and say the scoreline has been coming. In recent league games
we could have won by the same margin had we taken our chances and been more ruthless in front of goal.
Defensively we are looking very solid and also scoring a lot of goals on the attacking end, which is the ideal combo.
As always it’s one game at a time, with the focus on producing an all round 90 minutes plus performance. It’s a busy month with all games at home so we look forwards to seeing everyone at BHP for October.
“AS ALWAYS IT IS ONE GAME AT A TIME, WITH THE FOCUS ON PRODUCING AN ALL AROUND 90-MINUTES PLUS PERFORMANCE”
We welcome Cheltenham Saracens to Bobby Hancocks Park for a Hellenic Div 1 league match up.
Today we get back to league action and hope to carry on with our good form. We’ve had some great performances from the last few games in the league, and we look to get three more points and look to climb the league table.
Moving on to our last match, in the Challenge Cup. We played some great football and showed a good performance. There were some brilliant goals as we scored 8-1 and also secure a move into the next round. Man of the Match, Josh Dixon, scored a hat trick in the match and had a fantastic game, consistently troubling their defenders. He was unplayable in the match!
Again we have some newcomers to Southam! Craig Watkins and Kasey Smith, both top lads! We welcome them into the team and know that both will have big parts to play in the season.
Today’s match is against Cheltenham Saracens, who are two places ahead of us but with a game in hand. That being said we have the opportunity to leapfrog them with a win. Taking those three points is crucial and will climb us up the table where we belong!
As a team we are always learning, improving and just enjoying this new season. Everything with the club is moving in the right direction, on and off the pitch. All the support, and all the supporters every week, helps massively!
So I would like to thank all of you who continually make it to BHP and our matches! Cheers!
Hellenic League Division 1, Bobby Hancocks Park,
SOUTHAM UNITED 8 (Dixon 4’ 46’ 55’, Ethan Champkins 25’, Watkins 38’, Neale 50’, Goddard 80’,
Southam United kicked off the first of their seven matches in October with a crushing 8-1 win over Hellenic Division Two West side Shipston Excelsior in the first round of the Bluefin Sports (UHL) Challenge Cup.
Out of action since beating Littleton in the league on 20th September, Southam returned to Bobby Hancocks Park looking for their fourth win in five matches in all competitions. They were ahead after just four minutes through Josh Dixon and Ethan Champkins doubled the lead in the 25th before Craig Watkin made it 3-0 on 38 minutes to give them a three-goal cushion at the interval.
The floodgates opened after the break, with Dixon getting his second within a minute of the re-start and substitute Adam Neale making it 5-0 in the 50th minute. Dixon completed his hat-trick in the 55th, to make it six goals for the season so far, before further substitutes Brad Goddard and Pat O’Brien got in on the act with two more goals in the last ten minutes.
Jake Bradley got Shipston’s goal, but this was very much a consolation in a big win for the home side who play a division higher in the Uhlsport Hellenic League.
Southam are back to league action next Saturday when they are at home to Cheltenham Saracens (kick off 3.00pm).

Southam United was founded in 1905 following the amalgamation of two village teams. Southam United, or “Saints” as they are known, has a long and distinguished history
From 1947 to 1956 the club won most of the titles in the then prestigious Coventry and North Warwickshire League culminating in the Coventry Evening Telegraph Cup.
Saints moved into the Midland Combination in 1980/81 and immediately won the Division 3 title and completed the double by winning the Vase Final with a 3-1 victory over Kingsbury United. When the League was reorganised in 1983/84, United were invited into the Premier Division but after struggling for several seasons they were downgraded to Division 1 when it was discovered that their pitch was now too short owing to the construction of a bowling green next to it. It took until 1995/96 for United to get back into Premier Division football. In 1997/98 Saints enjoyed their most successful season in the Midland Combination finishing as Premier Division Runners Up and winning the Birmingham County FA Vase with a convincing 3-0 victory over Shirley Town.
All time leading goalscorer (over 1,000 goals) and record appearance holder is Bob Hancocks who served the Club loyally in virtually every capacity. In 2002 Bob and his wife Anne received a presentation from the Club to mark their over 50 years of loyal service to Southam United and their contributions to the game were finally recognised by the FA Long Service Award in June 2012.
In 2001 the Club merged with Southam Town FC, a progressive junior club formed in 1972 which, amongst other things, has pioneered Ladies and Girls football in Warwickshire. Long-term development plans have now been put into place to strengthen the football base in Southam both on and off the field.
The Club is an FA Charter Standard Community Club.
Currently, the Club’s range of junior teams runs from the Mini Soccer School (boys and girls of 5 years upwards) being introduced to the game in a fun and safe environment through the junior age groups up to the Under 16’s with some 250 players participating in coaching sessions and games throughout the season. The club also maintains a successful Wildcats and Girls section, encouraging more girls into the game and hoping to retain them for the future. This is with a view to eventually growing our own Ladies team.
Southam United are also fully committed to supporting it’s volunteer coaches and developing homegrown officials. All managers and coaches are supported in following their ambitions to complete FA coaching courses and as of the 21/22 season, the club has supported 3 of its former junior players to undertake their referee qualifications. With more to follow - subject to courses being available.
First Team results from 1998 to 2004 were largely disappointing. A sixth placed MidComb Premier Division finish in 2004/05 augured well for the future but could not be improved upon in season 2005/06 thanks to inconsistent league form. There was, however, some comparative success in Cup competitions, including an appearance in the first ever Cup Final at the Ricoh Arena, when Saints finished as Runners Up to Coundon Court in The Coventry Charity Cup.
Cup success was achieved in 2008/09 as the Club lifted the BCFA Midweek Floodlit Challenge Cup with a convincing 3 - 1 victory over Darlaston Town and again in 2010/11 with victory in the Telegraph Challenge Cup Final at The Ricoh Arena. Runners Up spot in the Premier Division was achieved in 2011/12 when the team fell away with the finishing line in sight.
In both 2012/13 and 2013/14 the Club were runners up in the BCFA Midweek Floodlit Cup; and in 2014/15 were beaten finalists in the Les James Cup at Walsall’s Banks’s Stadium and the Coventry Charity Cup at Coventry City’s Ricoh Arena.
Following a period of transition for the First Team and an absence of several seasons, the First Team successfully returned in 2018/19 playing in the Hellenic league and managed by Rich Kay. Since this time, and despite the challenge of COVID, the team have gone from strength to strength, gaining promotion and in the 2021/22 season are playing in the Oxford Senior League Premier. After one season in the OSL Prem the team was promoted to the UHL Hellenic League Division 1 at step 6 football, where they are looking to springboard to the next level.
Formed in 1964 as part of a multi-sport club, they joined the Cheltenham League Division 5.
Gradually the football section grew in strength and was soon running two sides in the Cheltenham League, two in the Stroud & District, two Sunday teams and several youth teams.
In 1986 the club were elected to the Hellenic League and stayed in Division 1 until they were promoted to the Premier Division in 1999/2000 with the second team also winning the Reserve Section that same year. After two years in the Premier the team were relegated back to Division 1 in 2001/2002.
In 2015/2016 the club narrowly missed out on winning the Division 1 title but secured promotion to the Premier Division by finishing second, however the club decided to remain in Division 1.
The club has now a strong base to move forward with three senior teams on Saturdays and Junior teams aged between 6-14.
