LETTER FROM THE MANAGER

I would first like to take this opportunity to welcome the players, management and committee of Marston Saints to Bobby Hancocks Park. We hope you enjoy the facilities and the matchday experience at Southam United. I would also like to take this opportunity to welcome our supporters back to BHP. It’s not been the same without you. You have really got behind myself, my staff and players to collectively achieve great success over the course of the last 2 years.

Its an exciting time for the club at first team level as we enter into the unknown in our first season competing in the Oxfordshire Senior Premier League. Its a moment in the club’s history to again rejoin the National League system at non-league level. Its something I have worked tirelessly on for months behind the scenes and I am thankful to the OSL committee and its member clubs for voting us in at the AGM. It has been a fantastic couple of years in Hellenic 2 North, but we now have the opportunity through sporting merit to progress as a club and First Team over time.

Its a new, exciting challege where we will play new clubs for the first time in our history, visit new grounds and meet new people. After 18 months of the pandemic, and a lot of football not played in that time, we needed a fresh chapter where we could challenge ourselves against other first teams week-in and week-out.

It has been all change since the end of the Hellenic Chairmans Cup. Ten players have left the club, while a core of 8-9 that have been with the club since its re-launch in 2019 have been retained. 12-13 have joined the club to give me a squad of 22 in total. I would like to welcome our new players to the club and thank the core of players that have re-signed and have been the backbone

The players that have left for pastures new, again, I would like to say a big thank you, as they have really helped put the club back on the map as a very competitive and successful first team. Its no secret that the club at a first team level really struggled for many years until its relaunch in 2019. Now our reputation preceeds us and clubs know a Rich Kay Southam United team is tough opposition.

Over the last two years the pride and passion for the badge has been restored.

Had it not been for the pandemic the two year period would have ended with a league title and trophies, but that disappointment has always been put into perspective against the backdrop of a global situation that has taken lives, cost people their livelihoods and many, many months of our freedoms and family time taken away.

The club, over the course of the past 18 months, has sadly lost some local legends.

Curly O’Callaghan, Bobby Hancocks Senior, Bobby Hancocks Junior, just to name a few. People that dedicated their lives to the club, local football and nonleague/amateur grassroots. Its always a huge honour and privilege to manage Southam United Football Club. A club that was formed in 1905 and suffered its highs and lows of promotion, relegation, and FA Vase and FA Cup runs. As we pass through the club all we can do is hope to make our mark on its illustrious history.

Another season is upon us. My 21st at first team level, and 7th as a manager. Never a truer word has been spoken that management is about gaining experience on the job. I had a long and successful playing career and I’m grateful that I’ve had longevity as a manager. Preseason on

the whole has been excellent. Its been a 10-week program where training has been very high intensity and a mix of very competitive games. We ended the preseason campaign having played 8 games, winning 4, drawing 1 and losing 3. The 3 defeats were very much with a skeleton squad and I must give my thanks to the players that have come in and covered so we could complete a full fixture list.

Today is the start of a long season. Hopefully a full season. We have a fresh, new squad that is a superb group and will represent the club, home and away, with class and dignity, no matter the matchday result. Since our relaunch in 2019 expectations are now very high. That comes from winning a lot of games and playing excellent football. Its somethingt to be proud of and to embrace. Its come from us as a group being humble, trusting a process and so much hard work.

Hard work, attitude and committment are nonnegotiables to be a Southam United player and member of staff. Hopefully we can continue to make everyone associated with the club proud, continue to play on the front foot and make more club history.

The new season sees Ashley Knights take over as club captain from Brandon Hallmark who has moved to Hinckley AFC and Saints will be looking for players to step up in attack to replace prolific striker Levi Steele who is now with FC Stratford. Also gone are goalkeeper Edward Cox and academy graduate Chidilim Okolo, who has taken up a place at Manchester University.

Kick off at Bobby Hancocks Park is at 2.30pm.

After competing for the last two years in the Hellenic League, Southam United start their new campaign in the Oxfordshire Senior League Premier Division against Marston Saints on Saturday.

The pre-season programme brought mixed results for Southam with a heavy defeat away to Blackpool Wren Rovers one of three reverses in their eight matches. They did finish with a flourish, beating Coventry Copsewood 1-0 at Bobby Hancocks Park, and manager Richard Kay will be hoping that he has a full squad to choose from on Saturday.

Kay has maintained that absences through holidays and players isolating with covid has meant that he never had a full squad available during pre-season and expects his side’s performance to improve on Saturday.

Southam United got their pre-season programme back on track when lifting the Bobby Hancocks Cup with a 3-2 win over neighbours Stockton FC at Napton Road on Friday.

Last season’s inaugural match for the trophy awarded in memory of Saints alltime leading goalscorer ended all square after 90 minutes and went to a penalty shoot-out from which Saints emerged victorious at 3-2.

It was another close-run affair this year with Cam Powers and Simon Barby on the mark for Saints in an even opening 45 minutes, with former Long Buckby midfielder Hossein Khorami, one of a batch of new signings for the season, getting the all-important third goal after the break to clinch a welcome victory after the defeat at Blackpool Wren Rovers the week before.

“It was a competitive game against a good Stockton side who are very strong in the Coventry Alliance Premier” said manager Richard Kay. “We had an early setback to go 1-0 down, but managed to level before conceding a second when the ball caught the wind and went over the keeper’s head. We levelled again before the break and, although Stockton came

This afternoon’s opponents come to Bobby Hancocks Park off of a successful, albeit, abreviated 2020/21 season.

The Oxfordshire side found themselves in top position in the table after 10 matches last autumn, as well as finding success in 2019/20 when they finished second in the table before pandemic restrictions halted play.

Much of Marston’s success came from

Nick Thorne and Ben Green who tallied 10 and 6 goals in their limited 10 appearances before football was shutdown again in December 2020.

The club has recently parted ways with management team Matty Jacob (Head Coach) and Luke Cuff (Assistant Coach) and will be looking to use their squad of around 30 players to continue where they left off last season.
