LETTER
THE
RICHARD KAY
A warm welcome to the staff, players and committee of Cirencester Town Dev for todays league game.
It’s been a tough start for Cirencester in the league, but being a development team I’m sure its great experience for their young players to be playing First Teams at non league level. Young players will learn more in a month in a first team environment than a few seasons at youth football. Being a development team I’m sure the remit is to produce players for the future and the first team. I wish them well.
I have to be honest that playing Cirencester brings back such great memories. Back in 2002 I was playing for Atherstone United in the then Dr Martens Prem which would be the equivalent of step 3 on todays NLS.
We were in a relegation dogfight. It was a baptism of fire and introduction to first team football. We played Cirencester away with one game left of the season after. Lovely set up at Cirencester from memory. We took a big away following to Cirencester. We needed to win to stay up, or did we?
I missed a pen and scored the rebound. 1 nil up. Possible huge 3 points. Cirencester scored twice in final 10 minutes. Gutted. We all thought we were relegated. We needed a miracle. We needed to win our final game by 2 goals and 2 teams to get beat.
The football gods smiled and the stars aligned. It was probably one of my best ever games on a football pitch. I scored, 2 assists and we won 3-1. Both teams we needed to lose lost. One of the teams lost in added time. We stayed up by 1 goal. The rebound I scored at Cirencester.
Probably the best day pound for pound I’ve had as a player. The next week was a blur topped off by a weekend away in Blackpool.
Whatever the result today. Cirencester Town you are forever in my heart
On to todays game. Last week was one of those games. If we played that game 99 times out of 100 we win 8-3 or more. We lost 3-2. We created more chances than most teams will create in a month. We gave the term, “sitters”, new meaning.
The positive again was the performance. We have played well now for the last 6 months. We have played some great front foot football with intensity. It’s another team we have let off the hook through not being clinical. I don’t expect us to take every chance but when you create 15 plus chances you have to win the game
I’ve challenged the players this week in training. We will be a solid team this season, no question. Do we want to be a midtable team and accept consolidation which in itself would be a good achievement or do we want to show more consistency and get ourselves in the top half and possible conversation for something more. Ultimately, it will come down to consistency for us.
We’re a match for any team in this division but were throwing points away which is the biggest frustration.
Enjoy the game

SOUTHAM UNITED 2 (Mauritson, Harris)
CHELTENHAM SARACENS 3 (Evans, Holmes, Major)
Richard Kay tells Southam United to start taking their chances after narrow defeat to Cheltenham Saracens.
After last week’s big cup win over Shipston Excelsior, it was back to league action for Southam United on Saturday when, despite taking an early lead, they lost by the odd goal in five to Cheltenham Saracens, writes David Hucker.
Two points separated the teams at the start of the day and, under a bright blue sky on a gloriously sunny autumn afternoon at Bobby Hancocks Park, it couldn’t have started better for Southam as Melvin Mauritson put them ahead in the fifth minute.
However, it didn’t go according to plan after that with the visitors striking three times to lead 3-1 and, despite a second goal from Ryan Harris, Southam came out on the wrong end of the scoreline, with their cause not helped by a host of missed chances and the second-half sending off of Andy Yeates.
“We had enough chances to win three games but we need to be more clinical in our finishing,” said manager Richard Kay.
“Despite playing with ten men for a lot of the second
half, we kept having a go and the lads went right to the end, showing a lot of character and heart. That’s what pleased me the most and, if we can turn our chances into goals, we will be in a position that truly reflects our play.”
Saints are at home to Cirencester Town Development on Saturday (3pm kick-off).

SOUTHAM UNITED FC
Southam United was founded in 1905 following the amalgamation of two village teams. Southam United, or “Saints” as they are known, has a long and distinguished history
From 1947 to 1956 the club won most of the titles in the then prestigious Coventry and North Warwickshire League culminating in the Coventry Evening Telegraph Cup.
Saints moved into the Midland Combination in 1980/81 and immediately won the Division 3 title and completed the double by winning the Vase Final with a 3-1 victory over Kingsbury United. When the League was reorganised in 1983/84, United were invited into the Premier Division but after struggling for several seasons they were downgraded to Division 1 when it was discovered that their pitch was now too short owing to the construction of a bowling green next to it. It took until 1995/96 for United to get back into Premier Division football. In 1997/98 Saints enjoyed their most successful season in the Midland Combination finishing as Premier Division Runners Up and winning the Birmingham County FA Vase with a convincing 3-0 victory over Shirley Town.
All time leading goalscorer (over 1,000 goals) and record appearance holder is Bob Hancocks who served the Club loyally in virtually every capacity. In 2002 Bob and his wife Anne received a presentation from the Club to mark their over 50 years of loyal service to Southam United and their contributions to the game were finally recognised by the FA Long Service Award in June 2012.
In 2001 the Club merged with Southam Town FC, a progressive junior club formed in 1972 which, amongst other things, has pioneered Ladies and Girls football in Warwickshire. Long-term development plans have now been put into place to strengthen the football base in Southam both on and off the field.
The Club is an FA Charter Standard Community Club.
Currently, the Club’s range of junior teams runs from the Mini Soccer School (boys and girls of 5 years upwards) being introduced to the game in a fun and safe environment through the junior age groups up to the Under 16’s with some 250 players participating in coaching sessions and games throughout the season. The club also maintains a successful Wildcats and Girls section, encouraging more girls into the game and hoping to retain them for the future. This is with a view to eventually growing our own Ladies team.
Southam United are also fully committed to supporting it’s volunteer coaches and developing homegrown officials. All managers and coaches are supported in following their ambitions to complete FA coaching courses and as of the 21/22 season, the club has supported 3 of its former junior players to undertake their referee qualifications. With more to follow - subject to courses being available.
First Team results from 1998 to 2004 were largely disappointing. A sixth placed MidComb Premier Division finish in 2004/05 augured well for the future but could not be improved upon in season 2005/06 thanks to inconsistent league form. There was, however, some comparative success in Cup competitions, including an appearance in the first ever Cup Final at the Ricoh Arena, when Saints finished as Runners Up to Coundon Court in The Coventry Charity Cup.
Cup success was achieved in 2008/09 as the Club lifted the BCFA Midweek Floodlit Challenge Cup with a convincing 3 - 1 victory over Darlaston Town and again in 2010/11 with victory in the Telegraph Challenge Cup Final at The Ricoh Arena. Runners Up spot in the Premier Division was achieved in 2011/12 when the team fell away with the finishing line in sight.
In both 2012/13 and 2013/14 the Club were runners up in the BCFA Midweek Floodlit Cup; and in 2014/15 were beaten finalists in the Les James Cup at Walsall’s Banks’s Stadium and the Coventry Charity Cup at Coventry City’s Ricoh Arena.
Following a period of transition for the First Team and an absence of several seasons, the First Team successfully returned in 2018/19 playing in the Hellenic league and managed by Rich Kay. Since this time, and despite the challenge of COVID, the team have gone from strength to strength, gaining promotion and in the 2021/22 season are playing in the Oxford Senior League Premier. After one season in the OSL Prem the team was promoted to the UHL Hellenic League Division 1 at step 6 football, where they are looking to springboard to the next level.
CIRENCESTER TOWN
Cirencester Town Football Club is a football club based in Cirencester, Gloucestershire, England..
The club was established in October 1889. They played in the Cheltenham League, winning the Division One title in 1927–28 and again in 1929–30.[2] They joined the Gloucestershire Northern Senior League in 1935, but left after two season.[3] Returning to the Cheltenham League, they were Division One champions again in 1948–49, before winning back-to-back titles in 1954–55 and 1955–56.[2] In 1957 they rejoined the Gloucestershire Northern Senior League, but left again after finishing second-from-bottom in 1960–61.[4] However, they returned for the 1962–63 season.[4] They left the league again at the end of the 1963–64 season, but returned in 1965 and were runners-up in 1965–66, before going on to win backto-back titles in 1966–67 and 1967–68.[4]
In 1968 Cirencester were founder members of the Gloucestershire County League, but after a single season in the new league they moved up to the Premier Division of the Hellenic League.[5] They were relegated to Division One at the end of the 1971–72 season, but were promoted back to the Premier Division after winning Division One in 1973–74. [5] The club returned to Division One after finishing bottom of the Premier Division in the 1977–78 season.[5]
The 1990–91 season saw the club finish as Division One runners-up, earning promotion to the Premier Division. They were Premier Division runners-up the following season, and won the league in 1995–96, earning promotion to Division One South of the Southern League.[5] The season also saw them win the Gloucestershire Senior Cup, beating Endsleigh 2–1 in the final.[6] The division was renamed Division One West in 1999, and after finishing third in 2003–04, the club were promoted to the Premier Division.[5]
The next few years saw Cirencester becoming a yo-yo club as they were relegated in 2007–08 and then promoted in 2009–10 after finishing fifth and winning the promotion play-offs, beating AFC Totton 3–2 in the semi-final and Bridgwater Town 4–3 in the final.[7] They were relegated again at the end of the 2011–12 season after finishing bottom of the Premier Division, but returned to the division after winning Division One South & West in 2013–14.[5] They won the Gloucestershire Senior Cup again in 2014–15, beating Shortwood United in the final.[8] In 2018–19 the club were runners-up in Division One South, qualifying for the promotion play-offs. However, they lost 2–1 to Cinderford Town in the semi-finals..
Development Team
The Development Team, born out of the previous season’s Under-16s team, “made their bow” in the 2009–10 season playing in the Uhlsport Hellenic League Reserve Division 2 West, and against all expectations, won the division title convincingly to be promoted to the Reserve Division 1. After a restructuring of the Hellenic League they were allocated to Division 2 West which they duly won and were promoted to Division 1 West where they finished fourth in their first season. This team continues to provide a solid platform for younger players to develop and progress to the first team.
