Sincerely,

Riverdale Elementary School

Hello, Southampton County! My name is Leslie Edwards, and I am one of the new teachers here at Riverdale Elementary School, teaching 4th-grade Science! I have been working in the Virginia public school system since 2016, teaching Math and Science for the past six years.

I had been praying about where to teach and send my daughter to school, and last year, I felt led to apply to Southampton County Public Schools. When I received the phone call for an interview, Riverdale immediately popped into my head. I then asked the Lord, Why Riverdale, God? He gave me a vision of the church across the street from Riverdale Elementary. With that being said, I am on the board for Lifewise Academy (a program where public school students, with parental permission, are allowed to leave school during school hours to take a Bible class!). Riverdale Elementary School had an opening for both myself and my daughter, so walking out on faith and trusting in God, I accepted the position.

Since being here at Riverdale Elementary, I can tell you that we have two awesome principals, Mrs. Warren and Mr. Kea. They support their teachers and staff wholeheartedly. Both Mrs. Warren and Mr. Kea have been there for me since I accepted the position. They allowed me to start a week early to prepare my room for my students. If I have any questions concerning my students or my daughter, they have been right there to answer me. They are awesome administrators to work with.

I have also been blessed with the best mentor, Mrs. Parker. God knew she was and is the perfect mentor for me. I feel like we have so much in common, and we just click. She has shown me how to use Planbook, PowerSchool, Frontline, and anything else that I did not use at my previous school. Our 4th grade team is the best team! Mrs. Parker, Ms. Taylor, Ms. Britt, and I work very well together, and it already seems like we have known each other for years. Our students are the best! They show excitement to learn new things. During our lessons and activities, they are engaged and strive to do their best.

I am so thankful the Lord led me in this direction because my daughter, Charley Rose, is having the best school experience. She has the greatest PreK teachers, Mrs. Bailey and Ms. Williams. Charley is such a big helper and loves to help her teachers and classmates! She loves her teachers, the RES staff, and all the new friends she has made since being here. She is doing well in PreK and loves her new school —Riverdale Elementary!

My daughter and I are overjoyed to be at Riverdale Elementary School. We are so excited and grateful that the Lord has blessed us with the opportunity to join the RES family!

On September 20, the education students and staff from Virginia State University visited Riverdale Elementary School to gain insight into teaching and elementary school culture. Many of the students on the tour were in their final year of college. The visit provided VSU students with an opportunity to learn more about working in a rural school district and gain first-hand knowledge from both new and veteran teachers at Riverdale Elementary School.

The tour was equally beneficial for Southampton High School students enrolled in the Early Childhood Education class. These high school students led the tour and guided the VSU students through Riverdale. This interaction allowed the high school students to ask the college students questions about college life and culture. The tour was remarkable, as it offered both the college and high school students a glimpse into their next stage in life. During the question-and-answer portion of the tour, Mrs. Tynethia Cooper addressed all the students, providing them with encouragement and guidance.

Below is Mrs. Copper's perspective on the tour:

Being asked by my principal, Mrs. Warren, to speak with college students entering the education field was such an honor, and I was full of excitement because Virginia State University is my alma mater. I was very interested in the questions they would ask about educating elementary students. I found it rewarding to learn what they knew and what they wanted to know about teaching. As I listened to their questions, I felt empowered by their intellectual curiosity about elementary education.

The questions they asked were insightful, such as Since you only have 30 minutes to plan, how can you get all of your planning done in that short amount of time? and How do you collaborate with your team teacher to plan? My response was, Given that we only have 30 minutes for planning, my team teacher and I use that time to talk and collaborate about where we are in terms of pacing, discuss different activities students could do for specific skills, and share resources with each other. Seeing students passionate about education and eager to teach and inspire young ch ildren truly warmed my heart.

I also shared how I chose to enter the field of education. I am a product of a family of educators and discovered my love for teaching elementary students while substituting at various elementary schools in Southampton County. They were amazed when I told them I had been teaching at the elementary level for 22 years! As the Question and Answer session ended, I assured them that Southampton County Public Schools is a great school system to be a part of, with supportive staff and students who are a joy to teach, each with unique learning abilities.

I also encouraged them as Virginia State University students in the field of education, assuring them that they would make a positive impact on students lives in Southampton County Public Schools. I ended by saying, Everyone loves gifts, right? So why don t you come to Southampton County Public Schools and be a gift to our children! This experience was an inspiring and unforgettable moment!

Capron Elementary School

We are proud to partner with you and are grateful for your unwavering support. Together, we are not just building a better educational environment; we are cultivating future leaders who will carry the spirit of generosity and community into their own lives.

As we move forward, we look to strengthen our partnerships and continue working together for the benefit of our students and community. Thank you once again for your dedication and support. Your contributions are truly making a difference!

As the school year unfolds, we would like to take a moment to reflect on the incredible support we have received from our community partners. Their generous donations have not only enriched our programs but have also fostered a sense of belonging and encouragement among our students.

To our local businesses, organizations, and individual donors, we extend our heartfelt gratitude. Your contributions—whether financial support, supplies, or volunteer time—continue to have a profound impact on Capron Elementary School. Your donations allow us to provide essential resources that enhance the educational experience for our students. Your generosity directly supports our mission to cultivate a nurturing and engaging learning environment.

Moreover, your commitment to Capron Elementary School instills a sense of hope and motivation in our students. They can see the tangible effects of your generosity and understand the value of giving back. This teaches them important lessons about community, collaboration, and the impact one can have on the lives of others.

Coach h Charles s Cooper

I am Coach Charles Cooper, a dedicated coach and mentor with many years of experience making significant impacts within the community. As an active father to my two children, I take great pride in their achievements. My son, Chavontae Cooper, is a junior at Southampton High School and was a state qualifier for the wrestling team in 2024. My other child, Juelz Cooper, attends Virginia Union University on a football scholarship and is currently on the Dean s List. I devote my time to my children, not only providing for them but also being a consistent presence in their lives.

Currently, I am in my third year as a dedicated School Security Officer at Capron Elementary School, where I am responsible for ensuring the safety of students while providing a supportive environment for both students and staff. I chose to work at Capron Elementary because working with children, especially within Southampton County, resonates with me due to their boundless potential. It provides a unique opportunity to shape their futures.

Whether it s through working in education or sports or serving as a mentor, I pride myself on creating environments where children can thrive, feel supported, and learn important life skills. I am also an enthusiastic Assistant Coach with Southampton High School, where I focus on building teamwork, discipline, and resilience among the players. Additionally, I serve as a Division I Referee for women s NCAA basketball.

Even with all these titles and roles within the community, I spend the majority of my time

working alongside Coach Eric Benton with Camp25, a local non-profit organization that began in 2017. We provide camp opportunities for children while they are out of school. Since its inception, Camp25 has served over 2,000 youth ages 5 to 14 throughout Southampton County, Franklin, Isle of Wight County, and Suffolk. Our overall mission is to inspire and develop socially, physically, and culturally educated children through a fun, positive, and unique camp experience. Our vision is to see holistically healthy children with confidence, high moral character, and discipline.

The organization s goal is to serve as many youth in the community as possible while also providing families with a healthier alternative to being inactive at home. Camp25 currently offers seven programs: Basketball & Cheer League, AAU Travel program, Spring Breeze Camp, Soccer League, Summer Splash Camp, Volleyball League, and OneDay camps. I play a vital role in Camp25 by creating an inclusive atmosphere and assisting in the development of high-quality programs that foster teamwork, skill-building, and sportsmanship.

I am passionate about empowering children and collaborating with coaches, parents, and community partners to enhance participation in activities and provide valuable resources. I firmly believe in the transformative power of athletics, which helps build character, leadership skills, and community. Overall, I am committed to inspiring the youth of our community.

Nottoway Elementary School

The fifth-grade students of Nottoway Elementary School hosted their Amazon-inspired Prime Day with their math teacher, Mrs. Alisha Jenkins, as they learned about prime and composite numbers. The students were given a calendar and tasked with identifying the prime days in the upcoming month. They then used mathematical strategies to determine whether each number was prime or composite.

Mrs. Jenkins also engaged her students in edible learning by using trail mix, cereal, and powdered drinks to explore scientific elements and compounds. These hands-on learning techniques are making a lasting impact on their lives.

In other news, Nottoway's 4th-grade scientists had a fascinating lesson in meteorology on Thursday, October 3, thanks to Jeremy Wheeler from WAVY Channel 10. The students participated in a virtual field trip to the weather studio, where they discussed weather tools and cloud formations. The school extends a heartfelt thanks to Mr. Wheeler and the Channel 10 weather team for their informative and engaging science lesson!

Fall Activities at Nottoway

October was a busy month for Nottoway Elementary School, as the staff, students, and their families participated in several events. During the week of October 14, the school celebrated National School Lunch Week by inviting parents to dine with their students and recognize the value of balanced nutrition. On October 23, the school hosted a walk-through trickor-treating event to highlight the importance of Title 1 services provided throughout the year. On October 25, Nottoway welcomed the Southampton County Sheriff s Office for Cookies with a Cop. Officers and detectives also participated in the weekly High Five Friday, greeting students as they entered the building.

During the week of October 28, students and staff joined in observing National Red Ribbon Week to pledge to say "No" to drugs. After welcoming over 300 students and guests throughout these events, the school extends its deepest appreciation to the Southampton County Sheriff s Office and the school community for their dedication to promoting educational excellence and fostering positive relationships with young learners.

The Pre-K students of Nottoway Elementary School welcomed special guests during the week of November 4, 2024, as they learned about community helpers. Members of the Southampton County Sheriff s Office and the Ivor Volunteer Fire Department visited the school to educate students about their roles in keeping the community safe. Students explored the tools and equipment used in each profession and even got to climb inside the fire truck!

On November 8 and November 11, the students and staff of Nottoway Elementary dressed in red, white, and blue to honor veterans in the community. The school extends a special thank you to its cafeteria manager, Margo Skeet, for her service in the U.S. Navy. The NES Cougars send their deepest gratitude to all veterans for their sacrifices and service to the United States of America.

On September 24, 2024, Meherrin Elementary School hosted its first family event of the year, Family Bingo Night. The school welcomed over 100 students and guests to the event, giving away lots of books and prizes to the attendees. The school would like to thank the staff for putting on such a fun event and everyone who attended for coming out to show their support.

Meherrin Elementary School is also blessed beyond measure to have community partners who invest in the education of its students by giving their time, talents, school supplies, and monetary donations. Once again, the school would like to thank Past Master Al Briggs and the Courtland Masonic Lodge #85 for their generosity.

Lastly, on Friday, October 11, 2024, Meherrin Elementary School welcomed some special guests as they honored Fire Safety Week: the Newsoms and Boykins Volunteer Fire Departments. The entire student body had the opportunity to see a fire truck and an ambulance, as well as hear about the importance of fire safety both at school and at home. The school would like to thank all of the fire department and EMS volunteers who generously gave their time to share such crucial information with the Meherrin Eagles.

The 4th-grade students of Meherrin Elementary School went far beyond Trick-or-Treating on Halloween this year. They spent the day completing various engaging learning activities centered around pumpkins. In Language Arts, they participated in a Read or Treat, while in Art, they created beautiful projects by painting pumpkins. In Science, the students used their scientific investigation skills to observe the parts of a pumpkin with the help of microscopes, documenting their findings along the way. Awesome job, Meherrin Eagles! Keep learning and growing!

On Tuesday, October 29, 2024, Meherrin Elementary School hosted its annual Title 1 Family Trunk-or-Treat event. Students and their families were invited to the school to receive information about the Title 1 services provided and to visit various stations for treats.

The school welcomed over 250 students and guests throughout the evening. Meherrin would like to extend its gratitude to the amazing staff and volunteers who made this event possible, as well as to the community for their incredible support.

The students and staff of Meherrin Elementary School learned about the importance of being drug-free during National Red Ribbon Week. Each day of the week had a theme to emphasize drug-free living. Way to make smart choices, Meherrin Eagles!

Hello! My name is Nylah Gray, and I am proud to be both a student-athlete and an ambassador at Southampton Middle School. While being an athlete is fun and rewarding, it requires dedication to not only excel in sports but also maintain strong academic performance. Balancing academics and athletics is one of the most important—and challenging—responsibilities of a student-athlete.

At Southampton Middle School, we offer a variety of sports for students to explore and enjoy. However, athletes must adhere to certain rules to remain in good standing. Fighting, suspensions, or receiving written referrals are strictly prohibited. These expectations help us maintain a strong reputation and demonstrate good sportsmanship.

During my sixth-grade year, I had the opportunity to be a cheerleader on the JJV team. It was an amazing experience that helped me build confidence and grow as an individual. This year, I am excited to continue as a JJV cheerleader and to take on the added responsibility of serving as a seventh-grade ambassador.

Being an ambassador is an honor and a significant responsibility. It s a role that requires leadership, setting a positive example, and encouraging others to do their best. I take pride in representing my peers and strive to inspire them to lead with integrity and confidence.

As I stand here in my classroom, I fondly look back at the journey that led me to fulfill my dream. It has truly come true. I always wanted to be a motivating educator and mentor. I wished to be more than just someone who trains, instructs, and assists students. I wanted to be a teacher who instills confidence and hope and truly understands students' strengths and weaknesses—helping them grow into authentic, positive, and healthy individuals. I aim to inspire them as role models.

My teaching career began at a local school, where I taught students from diverse socio-economic and cultural backgrounds. I enjoy collaborating with and learning from my students. The teaching experience has been both challenging and fulfilling, broadening my perspective and filling me with a deeper understanding of each student s unique challenges.

I greatly appreciate the positive, goal-oriented feedback from the leaders at Southampton County Public Schools. I receive immense love and respect from my students. It is here (at SCPS) that I have grown both professionally and personally. I have learned to balance work and life responsibilities. I attend meetings, seminars, conferences, and workshops that expand my expertise and experiences. Every day, I strive to grow as a global and cultural ambassador, empowering the school community.

Ms. Ragina Francis Vamsidhar teaches 8th grade Science at Southampton Middle School.

Southampton High School

My name is Teba Ivo Ketu, and I am from Cameroon. December 14, 2022, was my first day teaching at Southampton Middle School. Six months after moving to the United States, my family joined me, and they are enjoying the Southampton schools and community. My daughter is in the 11th grade, and my youngest is in middle school.

I have been teaching Biology for 20 years, and I am a certified teacher. Southampton County Public Schools assisted me in obtaining my teaching license in Virginia. The Division has been incredibly supportive, and I hold them in very high esteem. The collaboration and mentorship I received from the middle school were remarkable. The administration and staff provided me with full support and daily encouragement. Ms. Jackson, in particular, stopped by every day to check in on me, and I shared with her a traditional dish from home, fufu and eru. Eru is similar to kale but a bit different.

I truly enjoyed teaching the students at the middle school. I learned more about U.S. culture, and they were very open to learning about my Cameroonian culture. Teaching here has broadened my horizons, enhanced my technological skills, and made me a better educator.

In 2023, I was transferred to Southampton High School, where I now teach Biology and Environmental Science. I have made Southampton my home and even purchased a house in February. I am grateful for the warm welcome and continued support from the Southampton County Public Schools and community.

Under the direction of Student Council Association (SCA) sponsor Ms. Kristen Person, SHS students and alumni were excited to celebrate another unforgettable homecoming experience!

Before the football game, the SCA sponsors organized a "Game Day Tailgate" filled with food, fun, and festivities. Tailgaters enjoyed the event from 3:00 PM -6:30 PM on October 4. During halftime of the football game, the 2024 Homecoming Court and Homecoming King and Queen were presented. Thank you to everyone who supported our Student Council Association, students, and football team!

Go Big Red!

We are almost at the mountaintop. We began climbing this mountain in 2022. The Big Red mystique—the way football brings people together, the community showing up in droves to support the team at its games—is alive and thriving, just like it was in the 1970s. The community is proud of us, and they let us know it through text messages, in person, and on Facebook.

We finished the season as the Tri-Rivers District Champions. The Offensive Player of the Year was Zayden Pope, and the Defensive Player of the Year was Laurence Wallace. I was honored to receive the District Coaching Staff of the Year Award. It s rare to earn all three awards in one season, but we did, and I am proud of our team. I am deeply grateful for our coaching staff. Every single coach exemplifies excellence in their personal, familial, and professional lives. They check all the boxes and model for our athletes what it means to be honorable individuals.

My proudest moment, however, wasn t an award—it was seeing how our athletes responded after a tough loss to Petersburg in a close game. That loss hurt, and we all felt the pain that Friday night, but by Monday, our athletes showed up for practice with renewed focus, paying greater attention to detail and eager to get into the weight room. Their belief in their ability to go all the way was unshaken, and their seriousness set the tone for what followed. We finished the season 9-2, including a 6-0 mark in the Tri-Rivers District.

This year, we hosted the Regional Playoff in Southampton. It was a milestone, as we hadn t hosted a regional playoff since 2006. Although we lost our first game in the Regionals, we have grown and made incredible progress. We proved to ourselves that we have what it takes to win the State Championship.

The past three years have been remarkable. During this time, approximately 19 students have gone on to play at the college level. Each year, we continue to refine and strengthen our conditioning program.

I am deeply thankful for the support of our families, School Board members, high school staff, and community. This year, we received two washers and dryers, allowing us to provide clean uniforms for our players before every practice and game. I m also grateful to our families, who trust us with their kids.

Most importantly, I am thankful for our athletes. They are truly special. They possess unbreakable hope and endurance, and they are determined to reach Salem. They don t let losses define them; instead, they learn from those experiences and grow stronger.

The 2024 athletes have elevated Big Red to another level. I am excited to see what the 2025 athletes will accomplish. I have no doubt we will reach the mountaintop. We ve come such a long way, and our journey is far from over.
