We are fortunate to have a variety of restaurants to tantalize your taste buds, unique shops to find that unique gift, and much in the way of attractions to keep you busy during your stay. This booklet can be a valuable resource during your current stay but please take it home and refer to it again before your next visit.

______________________________________ Permanent settlements began in Souris in 1881 with the arrival of William Henry Sowden, who led a colonization party to the banks of the Souris River. In 1881, the first house was built to accommodate the men who built the mill damn on Plum Creek. Originally called the Village of Plum Creek, Souris was incorporated as the Town of Souris in 1904, the same year the Famous Swinging bridge was first built.

SOURIS SWINGING BRIDGE A Manitoba Star Attraction!

The Souris Swinging Bridge is Canada’s longest swinging suspension bridge measuring 604 feet (184 meters).

One of Manitoba’s fifty-four Star Attractions, the current bridge was completed in August of 2013 allowing Souris to reclaim the title of having Canada’s longest swinging suspension bridge. It replaced the previous 582 foot bridge that was destroyed during the devastating flood of 2011. The Swinging bridge has long been a source of community pride and every effort was put forth by the community to save the previous bridge. Community officials decided to finally cut the cables on the bridge due to concerns that fast flowing, high water could carry the bridge away causing damage to surrounding infrastructure . The current design is reflective of the original bridge and can hold up to 1,000 people at one time!

Celebrating 112 years since its original construction, the Swinging Bridge remains our town’s most famous landmark.

It is truly a beautiful sight to appreciate any time of year!

CANADA’S LONGEST SWINGING BRIDGE A little bit of history…

The bridge has gone through many changes over the years, being swept away and rebuilt after the floods of 1912, 1961, 1976 and most recently, 2011. In 1904, Squire W.H. Sowden (pictured below) originally built the bridge to access his farmland on the east bank of the river from his home located on the west bank. His home was situated between the Hillcrest Museum (seen in picture on right) and the bridge.

SOURIS HERITAGE MUSEUMS Hillcrest Museum Standing as the castle on the Souris riverbank, it was originally built in 1910 by Fred Sowden, son of Squire W.H. Sowden.

Designed by a local architect to reflect English architecture, it was once one of the top heritage properties in the country. This wonderful attraction became the Hillcrest Museum in 1967 when a group of local citizens formed a committee and purchased the property. The museum houses countless historical artifacts and an amazing collection of over 5,000 butterflies from around the world. The historic Agricultural building and CPR caboose are just around the corner.

The Plum Originally built in 1883 as St. Luke’s Anglican Church in Plum Creek, The Plum is Souris’s oldest standing building and now serves as both a museum and Victorian tea room.

Evading demolition in 1989, The Plum was moved to its current site and was rebuilt and restored to its original colours. The Plum houses a collection of local family histories and also serves as a gift shop for all three museums. Private rentals available.

Canadian Pacific Railway Museum & Train Simulator All ages are “Welcome Aboard!” this heritage railway experience. Rare artifacts, personal memorabilia, records and great “hands on” exhibits await. You can experience the interactive thrill of what it takes to drive a 56-car locomotive by using one of Canada’s unique diesel engine simulators! Appointment needed for the simulator. MORE TO DISCOVER Discover More throughout Souris-Glenwood The Souris Agate Pit offers a one-of-kind souvenir you can share.

Geologists are mystified by the wide variety of artifacts found here.

Fossils from the Paleozoic and Mesozoic era have been found preserved in shale or limestone. Many unique specimens have been discovered here including teeth of Equus (ice-age horses) and mammoths. Permits are required and available through the Rock Shop on the corner of Highway 2 & 250.

Striking historic architecture and timeless craftsmanship can be appreciated at a number of registered buildings throughout the community. Reminders of the earliest days of the community, many homes and buildings date more than a century old.

Re-trace the timeline of the community. The sacrifices and achievements of citizens are immortalized on Monuments and Memorials and can be found throughout the region. Military, education, philanthropy and community are celebrated in this manner.

The Town Bell now sits atop a monument overlooking “The Bowl” of Victoria Park along Crescent Avenue. The 1,200 pound bell once served as the Town’s fire alarm and was stationed atop the Town Hall. Built in 1905 by the American Foundry, while in operation the bell could be heard for up to 2 miles out of town. Today it rings much quieter to let you know what time it is.

We are a service rig company based in Souris, MB with 9 rigs (7 singles, 2 doubles) that work all over the southwest corner of the province. We employ between 50-60 people who all live in Souris or surrounding area. When a well is newly drilled by a drilling rig, our Service Rigs are brought in on a lease to complete the job and get the well producing. We also will go and do repairs when a well is not producing or a completion when the well has lived out its full operating capacity. Kathleen Lagasse - Artist, Instructor, Proprietor It has been a very busy few months for me. As an artist and instructor I have always wanted to open my own gallery/studio, and after the big successful art show I had in June, 2015, I decided that now is the time. There were 175 pieces of art shown at the art show and about 5 pieces sold all created by my students. We were also able to raise $500.00 for the food bank in just a few hours. I was very proud of all my students for such a successful art show and sale.

For the past few years I have noticed that there were not very many places around Western Manitoba that is offering what my gallery is offering. I found that my community, in particular was craving creativity. There is a studio in the back of the building for classes for all ages, and mediums from oils, acrylics, water colour and so on. There will also be workshops and solo shows for featured artists of the month.

The gallery will be featuring all types of art from around 30 different artists around Southwest Manitoba, from fused glass, mosaics, wood carvings, hand crafted beautiful wooden boxes, water colors, oils, acrylics, and coloured pencils. There will also be hand-made mitts, mukluks, and moccasins to keep you warm in the winter months, as well as hand made beautiful soaps and lotions. You won’t have a problem finding the gallery as it’s on the corner near the Souris Swinging bridge. The building is bright blue to reflect our town bird the peacock. It also has a real funky door that will definitely catch your eye. Come and enjoy the beautiful art on display and maybe take a workshop or two. There is no place quite like it.
