Southwest Sabres in action submitted The 2016 Southwest Sabres football season is underway. The crew has been working hard on cardio, drills and game plays since hitting the field in mid August. This year’s roster of 28 consists of players from Souris, Reston, Hartney and Wawanesa. They play 9-man football in the Rural Manitoba Football League that consists of seven league games plus playoffs. The schedule has them travelling to Swan River, Dauphin, Moosomin and Neepawa. Home game opponents will be Virden, Park West, (Shoal Lake) and East Parkland. (Ste. Rose) Due to the extensive travel costs and the rising price of equipment, the team needs to raise some money. They are holding a garage sale on Saturday, September 24, at 64 Willow Ave. Following the sale, the club is hosting a meat draw at Murphy’s Lounge starting at 5:00 p.m. This year’s team is coached by Brian Elder, Ryan Gilliard, Aaron Turnbull, Jason Harvey and Zach Harvey, and is managed by Sandra Vinck.

Come out and support the Southwest Sabres on Saturday, September 24.

Local family suffering through cancer diagnosis

By Darci Semeschuk Clint and Amy Heath received the staggering news that Clint has cancer, stage four Lymphoma. It’s the words no one ever wants to hear but they knew they had to move forward and deal with this dreaded disease.

Since Clint’s diagnosis, he has undergone six rounds of chemotherapy and three rounds of bone marrow injections. Through it all Clint has tried to continue working as much as he has felt he was able to do. With further treatments and a bone marrow transplant to come later this year he will be in and out of Winnipeg for multiple appointments and hos-

pital stays making it difficult, at times impossible to continue working. Amy will be taking time to be with Clint as he goes through these further appointments and hospital stays.

Friends of Clint and Amy are planning a fundraising barbecue for Friday, September 30. It will be held outside on the south side of the Souris and Glenwood Memorial Complex from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. If anyone would like to help out, donations of food would be greatly appreciated.

“We would be forever thankful for anything people would be willing to donate during the difficult road our friends face ahead,”

remarked friend Ken Enns. “The barbecue is one way people can help.”

The organizers are looking for hamburgers, hot dogs, mini bags of chips, and drinks. They also need hamburger and hot dog buns and ask that if you plan to donate them to please place your order with Minary Homestyle Bakery. Pre-orders for lunch are welcome.

Legion Week coming up

On June 20, 28 members of the Legion Auxiliary had a lovely potluck supper to start the evening. Sharon Zilky treated us to piano music during happy hour. Our next meeting will be September 19 at 7:30 p.m. We hope everyone had a good and relaxing summer as we prepare for the work of the fall and winter. Hope to see everyone at the meeting.

In other Legion news, Legion Week is running from September 19 - 23. As usual there will be lunch served at the Legion Clubroom from 11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. The menu is homemade soup, sandwiches, pickles and homemade dessert, all for just $7. Come out and support the Legion and Legion Auxiliary. See you there!

We had our first Cribbage evening of the season on Wednesday, September 7. It was disappointing to have only enough players for three tables.

Hopefully, these numbers will improve.

The best score of the evening was attained

by Amelia Morden and Cindy Janz. Betty Devins and Joan Phillips finished in second place and Viola Logan with Norm Davis took the third prize. Joan Dufily was the lucky winner of the 50-50 draw.

Bingo started on Thursday, September 8, and there were 20 people in attendance. The most noise of the evening was made by Carolyn Blanke. She shouted four times. No one came close to that but double yells came from Cindy Janz, Chuck Dron, Gale Collinson, Marge Rose and Barb Gordon. Margaret Kempf yelled only once but did it on the LITTLE HOUSE to receive $27.

Our meat draw of Friday, September 9, was a busy evening and winning tickets were well spread out. Only the household of Lee and Dave Johnson were able to take home two packages of meat. The 50-50 draw was worth $95 and the lucky winner was Nancy Birks. Smitty won the chance to take home $548 by finding the Ace of Spades. This did not happen and so it will be up for grabs again next week.

We were offered barbecued pork spareribs, rice, salad and dessert after everything was finished.

Notable items:: Legion Week is the third week in September. A lunch of soup, sandwiches and dessert will be offered from Monday, September 19, thru Friday, September 23. Our General Meeting will be on Tuesday, September 20, starting at 8:00 p.m. All members please plan to attend. Our 2017 membership cards are now available. The cost is $45.

The Crowd Thinners will be playing at VPL on September 23 at 6:30 p.m. Cory will be playing this Thursday same time.

September 10 • An unlocked vehicle was rummaged through on The Drive.

A couple of small items were stolen.

September 11 • A vehicle was stolen from 1st Ave. E. Keys were left inside the vehicle. Vehicle has since been recovered in the City of Brandon. On the same day a report of a male with rifle west of town was reported. Police patrolled the area, but the male was not located.

September 13 • A found birth certificate was turned into police. The owner has been located!

Coming soon to our Souris community

submitted Once again, Souris District Arts Council has put together an exciting line-up of performances for their upcoming season, and the board members are looking forward to have area residents attending and spreading this enthusiasm.

Brad Johner and the Johner Boys from Saskatoon come in October to share their homegrown style of country with us. Brad last performed in Souris in March of 2012, and the connection he made with the audience was certainly appreciated at that time.

As a veteran of the stage, Brad Johner has been a Canadian staple in country music for the past 25 years. As half of the critically acclaimed Johner Brothers, Brad and his brother Ken shaped the Canadian country music scene with five CD’s in the 90’s. As a solo artist for the past dozen years, Brad’s accolades include five CD’s and a string of awards including Male Artist of the Year at the Canadian Country Music Awards. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree and Brad’s boys have started their own brand of music. The boys include oldest brother Lucas on piano, second oldest Jesse on drums, next oldest Quinn on electric guitar and good friend Simon Jasieniuk on bass guitar. Having started doing shows with their Dad, they are not only an accomplished backup band, but front their own music with confidence and professionalism and are set to release their first all original CD this fall.

Michael Gabriel hails from Toronto, and will use his multi-faceted talents to present something new for us in December. Michael’s ‘Strings Attached’ international concert series has been extremely well received by the public and the press since its inception. With his original story-telling and emotionally fluid material, intricate choir arrangements and a gifted orchestral ensemble the show has become “… a breathtaking coming together of sound.” - Marielle Julian, Velvet Rope Magazine. Michael first began singing classical compositions - everything from Italian folk songs to arias. He even started to open the door to op-

era. It all changed when he started playing guitar, as he was immediately drawn to the craft of songwriting. He was the front man for original pop rock banks in Canada and the US. Eventually, he returned to his finger-picking and rhythmic strumming style on his steel and nylon string guitars. This chapter extended for over a decade and included the divine singer-songwriter lifestyle of being on the road, in a camper, in the studio and on the stage. This period was the training ground and foundation for his orchestral concert series called ‘Strings Attached’. After five years of international touring, developing and refining, ‘Strings Attached’ became a full-time travelling orchestral production that also involves local talent. His finest works can now be heard in one special event that showcases his strength as a singer-songwriter.

Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre’s (MTC) Rural Touring Production, “Last Train to Nibroc”, will be performed in the Souris Avalon Theatre in February. A romantic comedy, the play begins on a cross-country train headed back east in 1940. A young serviceman - recently discharged due to his epilepsy but still wearing his uniform - is chatting up a travelling small-town girl from Kentucky, recently disappointed in love. The pair, Raleigh and May, are sharing their conveyance with F. Scott Fitzgerald and Nathanael West. The famous writers, though, are not in a neighbouring seat. Both being recently deceased, they’re together in the baggage car. Still, their famous if ghostly presence seems to have emboldened Raleigh, who dreams of being a great writer himself. Getting published, though, would surely be a good deal easier than piercing the defences of May, a religious young lady with a clear-eyed view of her assigned place in the world.

Jason Farnham comes to us from California in March to give us a very different experience. An Evening of Piano with Jason Farnham delights audiences, again and again. Fans have affectionately dubbed him “Schroeder” from Peanuts because of his toy piano, his witty Victor Borge-style piano comedy antics and the clever way he interacts with the audience. The variety includes contem-

porary romantic piano, jazz, bossa nova, blues, stride piano, and classical with a modern twist!

Jason is always looking for an interesting spin on the status quo, a way to take a classic and turn it on its ear, soooo... the newest addition to his piano show is Fur Elise with a techno-rock-dance beat: “Fur Crying Out Loud Elise, Let’s Dance!”

And Mozart’s Rondo Alla Turca has now become “Rondo Alla Techno”. He’s also re-envisioned Autumn Leaves into a fusion of bossa nova and samba styles. Playing the piano while lying upside down Amadeus-style? Check. And always included in the lineup are a handful of Jason’s signature original piano pieces that his fans adore, like his 2008 original instrumental hit, Lisa’s Song (When).

The Beetles, featuring the songs of John, Paul, George and Ringo, arrive in Souris in April. There are five, not four… and they’re fab all over again.

It’s The Beetles (that’s two e’s, not e and a) from Brandon and they’re bringing a show pop full of the sing along memories originally fashioned by John, Paul, George and Ringo. The lads sport five part harmony vocals and dazzling instrumentation that gets toes tapping and makes singers out of even the most laid-back audience. Just try not to dance to their rockin’ version of Twist and Shout… I double dare ya! A salon owner, internet entrepreneur, mechanic, school teacher and print shop manager… Mo Karrouze, Kenny J, John Schellenberg, Jon Chiupka and Jim Andrey have been entertaining audiences all over southern Manitoba for several years. The band was the brainchild of the unstoppable Mr. Karrouze several years back when he needed a feature musical act for one of his many other projects, the British Pavilion at the Lt. Gov’s Winter festival in Brandon, MB. Not finding it, he created it… and the band has progressed from a once a year get together to multiple gigs all year round.

This year, a season’s ticket for all 5 performances will remain at $80, with individual performances costing $20 each. For ticket information, please see the block ad in this edition of the Souris Plaindealer.

Business is growing in the RM of Pipestone submitted In the fall of 2014 North American Lumber located in Reston, MB, closed its doors. This had left a void for any construction or house and hardware needs to the area. The Rural Municipality of Pipestone now has the opportunity to see this void filled!

RM of Pipestone Council has successfully purchased the former North American Lumber properties in order to lease the property. The RM of Pipestone Council has agreed to lease the former North American Lumber properties to local resident and business persons, Aaron and Hiede Smith, to operate a Lumber and Hardware store.

This arrangement was created when Smith and the RM of Pipestone Council committed to an eight-year lease to own agreement following the Rural Municipality’s purchase of the properties from North American Lumber.

Over the course of the next few months, Home Town Lumber & Supply will be repairing exterior damage to the buildings caused by hail in 2011.

Once the building is restored Home

Town Lumber & Supply will be working towards re-opening a fully functioning hardware store and lumber yard in Reston.

“I am excited to provide this service in the area. There is so much opportunity for this business, as well as other businesses in the area,” said Aaron Smith, Home Town Lumber & Supply. Smith announced that the business will offer hardware, lumber, building supplies, window and doors.

The RM has multiple developments on the horizon that can and will support the re-establishment of a lumber and hardware store in the Town of Reston.

“Our Municipality’s aggressive nature for development will not only support a development of this kind but also encourages that businesses will continue to grow throughout the years,” identified Tanis Chalmers, manager of Economic Development.

Sustainable development is a high priority for the Municipality. The RM currently has a 24-lot residential subdivision in Reston and are working on

by Judy Wells Fifteen years ago the Twin Towers of New York City’s Trade Center were attacked. Every year since a memorial ceremony has been held at the International Peace Garden (IPG) on September 11.

The 15th anniversary commemoration was held at the 9/11 Site which was developed due to funding received through the Building Canada Fund-Communities Component combined with donations raised by Rotary International and the United Firefighters Unions of both North Dakota and Manitoba.

The Official Party was led by the 26 Field Regiment, RCA Pipes and Drums and included 26 Field Regiment, RCA, Brandon; Canadian Forces Honour Guard, CFB Shilo; firefighters from the International Association of Firefighters (Manitoba and North Dakota).

Bernard Chrisp, IPG Board representative, gave opening remarks. The Bottineau Choir “Vocal Ease” directed by Jaque Marum, sang O’ Canada and The Star Spangled Banner to officially open the ceremony.

Chrisp gave some background about the 9/11 attacks, which shook the world and continue to have global consequences. He introduced MLA Doyle Piwniuk who was representing the Manitoba Government.

“Just as people remember where they were, what they were doing and who they were with in past historical events such as the attack on Pearl Harbor, the assassination of JFK and Neil Armstrong walking on the moon, we do the same with 9/11. We will never forget witnessing the tragic event on TV when over 3,000 people lost their lives, including 26 Canadians and one Manitoban. We also remember the selfless acts by firefighters, EMS, police and others - it was strangers helping strangers. Canada was happy to help with many rerouted planes landing across the country, many in Newfoundland and Winnipeg and later by sending assistance to New York,” said Piwniuk.

Piwniuk referred to a quote from JFK about the unique relationship between Canada and the U.S.A., “Geography has made us neighbours; History has made us friends; Economics has made us partners and Necessity has made us allies.”

The friendship that Canada and the U.S. share is envied around the world.

“God Bless the USA and God Bless Canada,” concluded Piwniuk.

Senator David O’Connell was representing the government of North Dakota. He said the sight of the fire trucks joined by the U.S. and Canadian flag at the entrance of the park, gave him shivers.

“I have been fortunate to sit on a North Dakota-Manitoba Relations Committee. I would like to thank veterans on both sides. I also wish to recognize all those people who went into the burning buildings to save people, and those who worked at Ground Zero. These people sacrificed their lives and now they are facing a 30% higher rate of cancer. Let us pray for the survivors,” he concluded.

Alex Forrest represented the International Association of Firefighters and paid tribute to the 9/11 firefighters.

“Fifteen years ago in Winnipeg as we watched the Towers collapse, we knew as our fellow firefighters were going into those burning buildings trying to get people out and would be going to great lengths. Within a week I was on my way to New York to assist - and that included planning funerals.

Sometimes we had seven or eight funerals a day. It was a solemn time for the

fire service. We are a very close organization; there really are no borders. I’d like to thank the IPG and Rotary for this beautiful memorial site and for making it permanent. Forrest spoke about the large number of deaths of firefighters that dreaded day - 343. On the other hand, the good news is the tragedy occurred around 8:00 a.m.

– which is shift change. This meant there were double the amount of firefighters and other rescuers available than at any other time of day, and not one of them whose shift had just ended, went home. Another incredible statistic is that these firefighters were able to get 10,000 souls out of the buildings within one hour - a gargantuan task at the best of times. There were hundreds of firefighters in the second tower, and they knew it was coming down but they couldn’t leave because they were helping people. During the clean up stage, whenever firefighters were found they were always with other casualties who they had been trying to help,” added Forrest.

Besides the firefighters, other loss of life included 23 New York police, 37 Port Authority and 4 EMTs. “And we’re finding out now that many of the firefighters who survived are suffering with occupational cancer and it is predicted 3,123 others will be diagnosed with occupational cancer in the future. The tragedy of 9/11 is still occurring everyday in New York.

The best example of Rotary being successful is the program started in 1985 to eradicate polio There has been great success to date - 99.8% of the world is free of polio, the exception is two countries - Pakistan and Afghanistan. We must continue to work as all of us are susceptible until polio is completely gone. Our goal is to have eradicated polio 100% by 2017. Right now there only a few cases. This project is an example of what can happen when people work together as a team,” concluded Ozbun.

Wreaths were laid by Doyle Piwniuk (Manitoba government), Senator David O’Connell (North Dakota government), and representatives from Bottineau County Veterans and Boissevain Legion Branch #10 followed by a moment of silence, a closing prayer and the pipe band playing “Amazing Grace”.

After closing remarks the Pipe Band performed in front of the Interpretive Centre where refreshments were served.

The Bertholet family gathered on the Labour Day weekend to celebrate the centennial of the family homestead at Grande Clairiere. After immigrating from their native Belgium separately, Joseph and Laure Bertholet married and settled west of Grande Clairiere. Their 12 children - including Anne Marie Bauche, the last living sibling - and about 200 of their more than 500 descendants gathered on the family homestead to mark the occasion. It remains in family hands as Gerry and Linda Bertholet and their family own and operate Maple Lake Stock Farms cattle breeding.

MP Larry Maguire, Brandon East MLA Len Isleifson, Reeve Blair Woods, Councillor Claude Martin of the Municipality of Grasslands and Jake Heibert of the Manitoba Historical Society presented the family with plaques commemorating the land as a Century Farm.

Family members from five provinces re-established ties - some cousins hadn’t seen each other in more than 50 years - and relived clan history as well as played games, shot targets in a turkey shoot and celebrated Mass at the Grande Clairiere Church. A live auction raised funds for the upkeep of the parish cemetery.

Souris golfers win Build A Barn Tournament The 5th annual Build A Barn John Tosh Memorial Golf Tournament was held in Glenboro on Friday, August 12. Southwest Cougars submitted by Grant Moffatt The Southwest Cougars started the 2016/2017 season this past weekend in Souris. The weekend saw the lowest number of skaters in the history of the organization with 21 skaters and 9 goalies beginning the weekend.

The weekend saw only four returning players led by d-man Jay Webber of Brandon, joining forwards Michael Tilbury of Melita, Josh Wiens of Oak Lake and Dexter Dalgleish of Alexander. The camp ended on a high note with the return of McCullough Park from the Virden Oil Caps and word that Carson Boyechko, who attended the Swan River camp, will return to the Cougar lineup this week.

Coach McNish was impressed with the first year Midgets and will be looking for the likes of Tan-

ner Andrew of Virden, Callum Fortin of Souris, and Bryce Young of Brandon to lead the first year forwards. On defence, the Cougars will be looking for Jordan Chudley of Souris and Cody Shearer of Wawanesa to anchor the young defence core. The Cougars have Dawson Green, Riley Wallace, Randy Cooke and Keegan Watkins-McIntyre bidding to stand between the pipes in the Cougar end.

The Cougars begin play on September 22 when they host the Yellowhead Chiefs in the Cougars preseason tournament. The Cougars will play a total of three games on the weekend and will open on the road against Eastman on October 1. The Winnipeg Thrashers will be in Souris for the Cougars home opener on October 8.

Sears National Kids Cancer Ride

The Sears National Kids Cancer Ride is one of the biggest and most ambitious charity cycling events on behalf of childhood cancer in the world. From September 7 - 24, cyclists will ride an 18-day, 7,000 km trans-Canada odyssey from Vancouver to Halifax. They stopped in Souris and were treated to lunch and some much needed down time before they headed off once again with Glenboro as a final destination for September 13. The cyclists raise money on behalf of charities that improve the quality of life for children, and their families, living with and beyond cancer. 100% of the dollars raised go to fund research at the 17 pediatric facilities in each and every province across Canada. Now in their ninth year, over $8 million and look to add over $1.5 million to that total in 2016!

OBITUARY Peggy (Florence J.) Carter (nee Woolmer) Peggy Carter passed away peacefully at the Lions Personal Care Center on September, 5, 2016, at the age of 94.

She is survived by her children and their families: Jeff (Judy) and grandchildren Jonathan and Jennifer; Robin (Susan) and grandchildren Meghan Carter-Lapchuk (Chuck) and great-granddaughter Addison and granddaughter Jillian; Kevin (Patrice Palmerino) and grandchildren Elliot (Allie) and Lewis; and Pam Richert (Vic) and grandson Daniel McIsaac (Christine) and great-grandson Ethan Sieben. Peggy is also survived by her brother-in-law Roland Carter (Joyce) and nieces Vera Comerford (Myles), Verna Mitchell (Bob), Sheila and their families. In England, special cousins Vera Taylor and Valerie Dyer and their families will miss her greatly.

Peggy was predeceased by her husband Gordon, her parents Edward and Amelia Woolmer, her sisters Connie (and husband Ted) Bradbury and Ivy Woolmer, and her sisters-in-law May (Frank) Dodds and Lillian (Fabian) Burbeck.

Peggy came to Canada as a warbride from England in January of 1946. She and Gordon moved on to their farm near Hartney that spring and over the next 29 years worked hard to successfully raise their family and to support the community and its many activities. Peggy worked as a medical secretary in Hartney and when she and Gordon moved to Winnipeg in 1975, she continued in this work at the Medical Arts Building. She enjoyed travelling, reading, music, theatre, square dancing, lawn bowling with the River Heights Lawn Bowling Club, and playing bridge in many clubs.

Throughout her life, Peggy’s focus was always her family. She was keenly interested in them, their lives, their careers and activities and their families. She was happiest at gatherings, surrounded by her family. Her keen sense of humour and good-natured teasing of her children and grandchildren are remembered with fondness. Her ability to see the funny side of things lasted through the dementia she experienced in her later years.

The family would like to express its thanks to the wonderful staff on the 3rd floor at Lions Personal Care Center for the loving and sensitive care, Mom received.

A memorial service is planned in Winnipeg for Thursday, September 22, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at Augustine United Church, 444 River Avenue. A graveside gathering will be held at Riverside Cemetery in Hartney at a later date.

OBITUARY Margaret Ellen McKay Margaret passed away peacefully at Fairview Home in Brandon on August 26, 2016 at the age of 88 years.

She leaves to mourn her passing, her son Colin (Pat) and grandsons Chris (Signe and greatgranddaughters Kate and Raegan), and Kevin; her son Ian (Donna) and grandsons Gordon (Stephanie) and Michael. She also leaves to mourn her passing her sister Edna Jackson, of Winnipeg, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Margaret was predeceased by her parents in 1971 and 1972, and by her best friend and loving partner, Ken, in 2014. She is also predeceased by her brother Don in 1951, her brothers-in-law Len Jackson and Desmond Silver and her sister, Helen Silver in 2010.

Margaret was the eldest daughter of George and Pearl (Powers) Hull. She was born on September 5, 1927 in Detroit, Michigan, USA. Before she was a year old her family moved back to Canada. She took her schooling in Brandon at Central, Earl Haig and Brandon Collegiate Institute. She also worked at the Strand Theater.

When at Riverside at a dance, Marg met a young man and on July 16, 1947, she and Kenneth Ralph McKay of Hayfield got married. He was a dedicated farmer all his life. They had farmed together for almost 67 years before “K.R.” passed away.

Marg loved to garden and roses and spent many hours cutting the grass in her big farmyard. She enjoyed sewing, knitting and crocheting and also loved to plan the “shed parties” that she and Ken hosted for family, friends and neighbours. Lots of dancing and good times had at those parties!!!!! She also enjoyed curling having been a member of the Riverview Curling Club. She made many friends over the years through her curling. She also liked to watch wrestling on T.V. and her four grandsons have many fond memories of Saturday afternoons with Grandma watching wrestling.

She was a wonderful Grandmother - when she bought one new toy, she bought 4 always! Marg’s family meant the most to her especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Service was held at Brockie Donovan Chapel on September 2, 2016 with Arlene Robertson officiating. The soloist was Sandy Jasper. The active pallbearers were Chris McKay, Kevin McKay, Gordon McKay, Michael McKay, David McKay, and Rob Margetts. Interment was in Brandon Cemetery. Lunch followed at the Central United Church Auditorium.

by Tyler Bugg September 11: In a series of coordinated hijackings, four airplanes are taken over, with two crashing into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York, one into the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and another crashing into a field in Pennsylvania when the passengers attempted to retake control of the plane. In all, almost 3,000 people were killed, and lead to the US spearheading the War on Terror. (2001) September 12: In one of the biggest upsets in early history, the Greek city-states lead by Athens defeated a much larger force of Persians at the Battle of Marathon. The Persian Empire invaded Greece after Athens supported revolts of subjected cities, but 11,000 Greek soldiers, not counting the famed Spartan warriors that were late, held the Persian army of over 26,000 back. This is also where the legend of a Greek messenger named Pheidippides running the 26 miles to Athens to tell of the victory… then collapsed and died from exhaustion, after running from Athens to Sparta and back two days before. (490 BC) September 13: At the culmination of a three month siege during the French and Indian Wars (also known as the Seven Years War in Europe), the British and French fought at the Plains of Abraham overlooking Quebec City. In the fifteen-minute battle, the French were defeated and driven from Quebec City, but both the British and French generals in charge, James Wolfe and Louis-Joseph de Montcalm both died. (1759) September 14: For the third time in American history, a serving President of the United States died after an assassination attempt. While visiting the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York, on September 6, President William McKinley was shot by anarchist Leon Czolgosz, who blamed the recently re-elected McKinley for losing

his job. Theodore Roosevelt, McKinley’s Vice President, was sworn in as President soon after, and the Secret Service was officially put in charge of protecting the President. (1901) September 15: The first tanks are used in warfare at the Battle of the Somme. With the impasse of trench warfare, and the horrendous casualties for small gains made in previous battles, the British sought a way to break through the front lines. Their design for a landship involved a heavily armoured vehicle driven by caterpillar treads with cannons and machine guns mounted on it. The name “tank” came when they were described as water carrier to be used in the Middle East as a security measure. While slow and unreliable, the Mark I tank was a sign of things to come, and by the end of the war, the French and Germans had their own tanks. (1916) September 16: After a month of delay and a serious lack of food and provisions, the Mayflower sets sail from England, carrying approximately 135 men, women and children to the New World. When they arrived in November near the present Cape Cod, they founded the famed Plymouth Colony.

Norton, a failed businessman living in San Francisco, who was quite possibly insane or eccentric after the failure of his business, declared himself “Norton I, Emperor of the United States.” He became much beloved by the citizens of San Francisco, and currency issued in his name was accepted by establishments he visited frequently. He was noted for issuing decrees through the local newspapers that were usually ignored, including abolishing Congress, the Democratic and Republican parties, and even the Republic itself, as well as for a bridge from San Francisco to Oakland, which was later built in 1933.

REID

Norma Adine Norma Adine Reid passed away peacefully on September 8, 2016, after a lengthy stay at the Souris Health Centre, at age 92.

Norma was born October 2, 1923 to Charles and Minnie Adine Clark and grew up on a farm at Elm Creek, MB. After completing normal school training in 1946, Norma taught Grades 1 and 2 in Elgin, MB. In December 1948, she married Arthur Reid and together they farmed the Reid family homestead at 18-21-7 until selling the farm and retiring to Souris in 1987.

Norma and Art travelled across Canada and the U.S. on several bus tours. They belonged to the Souris Golf Course and enjoyed playing golf with family and friends.

Always an avid gardener, Norma belonged to the Souris Horticultural Club for several years. She also enjoyed many years as a member of the Souris Art Club where she loved oil painting, and working with water colors and trying other media. For a time, she served as the treasurer for the condo board at Heritage Place where she resided independently until admittance to hospital.

Norma is survived by her children: Brenda (Bruce) Sinclair of Calgary, AB and Blair (Anne) Reid of Winnipeg, MB, by her grandchildren: Terry Sinclair Vancouver, BC and Gary (Jean) Sinclair of Fort Saskatchewan, AB and three greatgrandchildren Cassidy, Ashton and Dakota. Norma is also survived by three siblings: Ila Lang, Souris, MB; Corky (Donna) Clark, Virden, MB and Alvin Clark, Carmengay, AB, as well as several cousins and innumerable nieces and nephews.

Norma was predeceased by her husband of 49 years, Arthur Reid; by her parents Charles and Minnie Adine Clark, and by two brothers and sisters-in-law Max (Hettie) Clark, Lewis (Jean) Clark and brother-inlaw Andy Lang.

The family would like to thank Dr. Ziada and all the wonderful staff at Souris Regional Hospital for their excellent care of Norma.

And a special thanks to Carolyne Cox for all of her tireless support and excellent assistance.

Funeral service was held at St. Paul’s United Church, Souris, MB on Wednesday, September 14, 2016 with a private interment in the Souris & Glenwood Cemetery. Donation in memory of Norma may be made to a charity of your choice.

by Reena Nerbas Dear Reena, We own a large, decorative cabinet that was built for our upper landing to provide more storage and look good. It has a shiny melamine surface, and we were happy with it until a large scratch was made on the surface by someone dragging a large glass ornament over it while dusting. Is there anything that can be done to reduce or eliminate this unsightly scratch?

Bruce Dear Bruce, SeamFil or paint are both effective at reducing the appearance of scratches on melamine. If the melamine colour is dark you may want to soften a colour matched crayon, fill in the scratch and then buff the area to blend the colour.

Readers Respond: Re: Holes too large in salt shaker I read about the salt shaker problem with regards to the salt pouring out too quickly due to the holes being too large. I took the lid off of my shaker and placed plastic wrap over the opening put the lid back on and poked holes through the plastic wrap; problem solved.

Jewel Re: Smelly cupboards What I’ve found effective to remove odours from cupboards or drawers is to put vanilla onto a cotton ball, put the cotton ball into a cup. Leave the cup in the cupboard or drawer. It may take a few days but the odour gradually disappears.

You may have to replace the vanilla on the cotton ball about once a week. Marion Re: Hairspray on walls In reference to the lady who has trouble removing hairspray from her walls. I use Lysol bath foam (Lysol Tub and Tile) to remove hairspray on walls. I also spray it on my hairbrushes before washing with soap. Worth a try; as it works for me.

Marion Re: Removing bathtub ring I made a small bag from old pantyhose and filled it with bits of hand soap e.g.: Dove or Ivory work like a charm. Additional use: My trucker neighbour uses soap/pantyhose to clean his windshield and headlights while on the road, says it’s the very BEST. Doreen Re: Black goo on carpet after cleaning broken ballast light Your tip noted a 1970’s fluorescent ballast was replaced which would have probably been dielectric probably PCB (Polychlorinated Biphenyl) carcinogenic, so that was why the electrician was reluctant to clean it up. It is not volatile, but skin contact is to be avoided. Dust and dry with oil absorber. Follow with any dry-cleaning solvent and more absorber dust. Wear protective equipment. Dispose of any cleaning material at Hazardous Waste site.

David Re: Black goo on carpet after cleaning broken ballast light I read about 25 years ago that those old ballasts were made with PCB DANGER by one company and you could identify them by an “E” in the serial number. That electrician should

have known that and owned up to the responsibility.

Charlie Re: Dryer lint I too had a problem with dryer lint messing up my outdoor patio space. To solve it, I placed a one-gallon black plastic plant pot (with drainage holes) under the dryer vent and put a 2-3 inch layer of coarse gravel in the bottom of the pot.

The lint gets trapped by the gravel and can be picked off, or just disposed of and replaced with fresh gravel. Hope this works for your reader.

Labour Day Classic fields 94

by Brenda Wiebe, Tournament organizer Souris held their annual Labour Day Classic Golf Tournament this past weekend, September 3 - 5. The forecast was not very encouraging but 94 eager golfers went out and made the best of it. On Saturday teams played their practice round with tournament play on Sunday and Monday. The format was a 2 person Texas Scramble with the winners being determined on total score of tournament play. Tournament entry included all three days of golf plus a steak supper on Sunday. All had a good time.

Tournament winners: Men’s Category Championship Flight - 1st Brock and Jodie Anderson - Total score 131; 2nd Brendan Canada and Terry McNamee - Total score 133.

First Flight 1st Scott Burgess and Jim Cooke - Total score 144; 2nd Jeff and Skylar Canada - Total score 148.

Tee Off On Cancer Golf Tournament

submitted Sunny skies greeted 81 enthusiastic golfers at the first annual Canadian Cancer Society Tee Off On Cancer golf tournament held at the Souris Golf Course on August 6, 2016. The tournament was a scramble format with 4 person teams. All 18 holes for this event were sponsored because of the overwhelming support received from local businesses and individuals. The tournament event winners was Don Smith and his foursome from Souris, the ladies was won by Stacie Popien and her team from Brandon and Rod Tutkaluke and his team of Boissevain won the mixed.

After golfing, everyone gathered at the Clubhouse to enjoy a delicious supper donated by various local businesses. Supper was followed by a Chinese Auction and a grand prize raffle draw for an Oak Island Resort golf package, which was won by Amy Heath of Souris. The evening ended with musical entertainment by Sherwin.

The Committee would like to thank everyone who contributed in any way to help make this event such a huge success. Together we raised over $10,000 to support cancer research and improve the lives of Manitobans affected by this disease. Special thanks to the staff at the Clubhouse for helping to make the day run so smoothly.

Watch for posters/information next summer as the Committee is looking forward to hosting this event in August 2017.

Local youth makes Team Manitoba

Seventeen-year-old Brendon Agland has made the Team Manitoba U19 volleyball team for the Indigenous Games. Brendon, who moved to Souris in 2007, attended several tryouts with Team Manitoba where many other youth were competing for twelve coveted spots. First making the top twenty, Brendon, a Grade 11 student at Vincent Massey in Brandon was fortunate to be named to the top twelve after several power practices in late August. Once named to the team, Brendon will be practicing in Fisher River until the Games begin in Toronto in July 2017.
