INTRODUCING THE NEWLY REBRANDED...

A new name, logo, board of directors and website have been revealed for the Sources Community Resources Foundation (formerly Peace Arch Community Services Foundation), launched June 23 at an event hosted by Jas Salh of Holliswealth. Over 50 of our most ardent supporters attended. Several donors were recognized for their contributions to the Foundation, adding up to $150,000 in the last six months. Five directors were elected to the board (find out who on p. 6). “It’s an exciting change for us,” said Sources CEO David Young, who also oversaw the inauguration of the Sources brand in 2010. “We believe the alignment of the name of the Foundation with our Resource Centres under the Sources identity will help us evolve into a stronger presence—one that donors can rely on to translate their dollars into impact that is local, visible, measurable and, most of all, helpful.”

Through fundraising efforts, bequests and donations from individuals, businesses and community groups, the Sources Foundation strives to provide the financial means for the Sources Resource Centres’ programs that aren’t government funded.

Our special thanks to Jas Salh for generously sponsoring this event and arranging for the services of Candlelight Cuisine Catering, The Sushi Lady Catering, The Speakeasy Trio, and volunteers who helped make the evening a great success. The website was crafted by Thornley Creative Communications with a focus to online giving. Donors can direct their dollars to the program area of their choice: »» Poverty Relief »» Families & Children »» Community Support »» Area of Greatest Need

CLIENT STORIES JILL’S STORY “CHANGE FOR THE BETTER” Jill Oliver likes reading thriller novels and watching scary movies. She loves to volunteer at the local thrift shop and go to social functions— that’s how she met her boyfriend. Someday, she wants to marry.

She played a major role in a theatre production at her day program, something she wouldn’t have done before.

“Sources has helped me quite a bit,” Jill said. “I’m glad I came here, because Sherley’s helped me a lot and I love her for it.”

Jill, 53, also has a learning disability and is one of about 30 people in Sources’ Home Share Program, which provides personalized support to adults with special needs in community-based homes. She has lived with her care provider Sherley and her family at a house in Cloverdale since 2013. Before Jill came to Sources, she often got into trouble. She had an exploitive relationship with an ex-boyfriend. She took drugs. She had no friends or activities and would wander in the community. But after moving in with Sherley, things have changed for the better.

She’s a busy woman. Three days a week, Jill takes the bus to the thrift shop where she volunteers. After that, she goes to her day program. On Tuesdays she attends the Sources social group where she engages in games, dancing, and chatting with everyone.

“I used to go out and not tell anybody where I was going,” Jill said. “But now I tell Sherley where I am going and what time I’ll be back.”

One day, she hopes to gain more independence and get a job that will pay her.

Jill’s also learning how to manage her money, how to clean, how to do meal planning and cook for everyone.

“I love the job at the thrift store,” Jill said. “I would want to work at a clothing store, maybe in a mall,” Jill muses. “That’s my goal.”

INFANT DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM: ANNUAL FAMILY PICNIC!

Babies and toddlers aged 0 to 3, with parents and guardians in tow, gathered at Surrey’s Bear Creek Park on July 22 for a morning of fun in the sun! There was face-painting, mask-making, bubble-blowing, inflatable balls, parachute games, snacks, and a delicious cake. Many went for a ride on the train then came back for music time with Program Manager Yvonne Adebar on guitar. The wheels on the bus go round and round, all through the town!

CLIENT STORIES

KRAFT CANADA

SONYA’S STORY “STAYING STRONG”

HELPS FOOD BANKS

Sonya is the mother of three children and a wife of over twenty years. Once she had kids, being a stay-at-home mom became her full-time job. When her kids were in school full-time, she tried to rejoin the workforce to regain independence but her husband didn’t support that. “One day he said to me, “Who’s going to hire you?” and then looked at me like I was nothing,” Sonya said, her voice cracking. “He is controlling and abusing me.” Prior to her marriage falling apart, Sonya suggested counselling for the family but was ignored. She knew she had to go for herself, though, so Sonya went to her doctor for help and started counselling at the Delta-North Mental Health Office. When she reached their limit, they referred her to Sources Women’s Place.

“I didn’t know Sources Women’s Place existed before and thank goodness it does because it’s helped me tremendously,” she said.

The staff and volunteers at both Sources food banks wish to acknowledge Kraft Canada and Kraft Canada Foundation for providing a grant to each food bank. The grants, totaling close to $10,000, have helped us acquire shelving, donation bins, a heavy-duty cart, a cooling unit, a dishwasher and more. Thank you! Watch our thank you video featuring some of our food bank staff and volunteers on Sources YouTube channel >>

Sonya registered in the Trauma Counselling Program for Women, which provides free counselling and workshops. She has taken workshops on Self-Esteem, Trauma, Anxiety, Coping Skills, Boundaries, and Assertiveness for Women. Staff at Sources Women’s Place also directed Sonya to Sources Newton Resource Centre where she took an Empowerment Program. Through them, she learned about the Sources Legal Advocacy Program and saw a legal advocate. “She gave me information, printed out forms for me, directed me to legal counsel and after two months, I was able to file for divorce with her help,” Sonya said. “During the time I was still together with my husband, I lost myself by putting everyone else first. My kids were everything to me while my husband was at work and took control of the finances. I put my life on hold for all of them and I wasn’t valued for what I did. Through all the help I received from Sources, the volunteering, various involvements and the on-going research I continue to do, I’m now finally finding who I am again and I know it will all lead me to a lot more.”

* THANK YOU * THANK YOU * THANK YOU *

John Hitckcock and Judy Freeman of PrimeTime Living (pictured top left) generously donated $10,000 to Sources Dental Clinic on April 24, taking care of the clinic’s expenses for the next 1.5 years.

SOURCES’ Family Law Program was recognized for the outstanding work it provides to women in the area of legal advocacy with an $8,000 grant from the Soroptimist International of White Rock at their Grants Awards and 65th birthday celebration on May 12.

The White Rock Peninsula Rotary Club hosted a sold-out fundraiser dinner on June 4 where guests donated $2,500 to the Hot Lunch Program at Sources Women’s Place. This will enable us to provide about 1,000 free and nutritious meals to women in our community.

The Rotary Club of White Rock presented Sources CEO David Young a cheque for $25,000 on June 9, fulfilling their two-year commitment to contribute $50,000 towards an elevator at the Sources South Surrey/ White Rock Food Bank.

At the Rotary Club of White Rock’s 60th Anniversary celebration in May, Clifford Grant, a Rotarian and the volunteer manager of the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, came up with the idea to donate $50 to the Sources South Surrey/White Rock Food Bank for every pair of feet donning “fun socks.” He donated $450 to the food bank.

Community and arts leader Chris Thornley gave us a cheque for $500 on May 21 following a successful sold-out Tribute to Van Morrison event – a highlight of White Rock’s Irish Festival. Thank you to the band members and community members who came out to show their support.
