From Stone Age to Cutting Edge in 26 years

Nothing happens overnight in the software development world, RentalPoint Software Inc. has just released their first iPhone app which is now available on the Apple App store. This App is called RentalPointToGo and is a barcode scanning App that integrates with the premium desktop version of RentalPoint, to enable users to track equipment as it leaves and returns to their warehouse, plus a host of supporting features such as rack and road case support. The App establishes a real time connection to the database server so that warehouse staff get immediate feedback when they scan equipment. The App has generated phenomenal interest from an established RentalPoint user base which is spread over 21 countries from North America, to Asia, Australia, South Africa, Europe and the Middle East. The App which runs on iPhone’s third to fifth generations, plus iPods and iPads, can scan barcodes using the built in camera or using an attached barcode scanner such as the Linea Pro tm from Infinite Peripherals. The advantage of developing for the iPhone/iPod base is that everyone (that has an iPhone or iPod), knows how to use them, for example, to delete a barcode the user only needs to

RentalPoint’s premium desktop based system can either run from a cloud server or a traditional Windows desktop. While competitors scramble to match features developed by RentalPoint as much as 10 years ago there is no doubt competitors will be announcing iPhone App’s soon, most likely before they are released, this is called “vaporware” and as such was a term coined in the 80s when software companies scrambled to release basic software that has long since become obsolete. New from Xavtel—a division of the Penton Group of Companies—the Senator Conference System provides the best of both worlds in installation, flexibility and performance. While utilizing a single CAT6 cable, up to 512 microphones per processor can be daisy chained and powered. But, despite the cost saving daisy chain configuration, each microphone can still be individually processed for EQ, AGC, etc. The key to making this possible is Xavtel’s high speed data network which allows the user to store each microphone’s settings in the processor and pull up those settings only when the microphone is engaged. The Senator System also provides many other innovative functions. The daisy chain is in itself a closed loop system and should one link fail either due to a node (microphone) failure or a cut line, the system will still continue to function while an error message is displayed on the processor. Each microphone can be processed individually for EQ, feedback suppression, etc. and the software also includes an advanced voice gate that relies on the frequencies and inflictions of human voice and will only open for speech while filtering out other noises such as pens drummed on the table or

doors slamming. The system also includes a sophisticated dynamic mix minus algorithm that automatically raises and lowers volumes in zones. Several processors can also be linked together where each is capable of up to 512 microphones to create a truly large system. In such instances, advanced auto-mixers can manage priority settings for individual microphones between auto-mixers, creating multiple room-combine systems or one enormous network. System accessories include 6 channel digital amplifiers connecting to the system via a single CAT6 carrying data, audio, and amplifier supervision over a single line. Voting pads and RFID readers are also part of the accessory range as well as AEC cards for remote intercom continued on page 49

Create Your Own Outdoor Theater with the Outdoor Big Screen

By Ryan Neeley

Homemade lemonade, neighborhood barbecues and kicking back in the hammock watching the sunset. Those are just a few of the simple things I love about the summer months. Not to mention all of the camping, biking, and other family activities or traditions each of us look forward too every year. But last year, I started something new and it is becoming a family favorite. Let’s just say most people go movies, but now the movies come to us. Right in our own backyard. Outdoor Entertainment Gear by Camp Chef now offers my family, neighbors and friends 12 feet (144 inches) of viewing pleasure. The portable Outdoor Big Screen lets me create a fabulous setting to watch our favorite summertime movies. And I have to say watching The Sandlot outside on freshly cut grass is the kind of experience that makes you feel like a kid again. Unlike hanging a bed sheet from the back deck, the Outdoor Big Screen is quick and easy to set up and it doesn’t wave in the summer breeze. Once I pull the carry bag out of storage, I simply connect the frame, clip the screen into place,

tighten a few straps and the screen is ready to go in just a few minutes. The screen is stable enough to stand on its own but there are some stakes and tiedown guy lines that can be used if increased stability is needed. One thing that can be associated with outdoor movies is poor image quality. However, there is no need sacrifice the high definition. The massive silver screen is made of a durable oxford nylon reflective material that provides a perfect surface for high-resolution pictures and enriched colors. So plug in the blue-ray player and use the high def projector because the screen did not deprive me of clear and high quality imagery. When everything is assembled my screen stands just under 10 feet tall and 12 feet wide. However, Camp Chef does continued on page 37

video feeds and computer systems. Instantaneous signal switching and transmission over long distances using CATx or fiber cabling is vital to smooth operations. The Black Box DKM FX system enables users to connect and share target computers. With the DKM FX system, a command and control center can be extended through several rooms or buildings. The DKM FX HD video and periph-

eral matrix switching and extension technology offers an array of ports that can be dynamically allocated as input or output. Ports can be connected to a CPU or a console, and ports can be switched according to the users’ requirements in any combination of inputs and outputs. This provides greater flexibility, better port utilization, and lower costs than systems with dedicated ports. The main management switch of the DKM FX is housed in the server room with servers and all the transmitters. In most setups of this kind, CATx cabling is

used for the input because it is pre-existing in the infrastructure. The outputs on the DKM FX populated chassis are connected to CATx or fiber optic cabling depending on the location of the receivers. Each user station in remote buildings or other locations on campus uses fiber optic cabling because it increases distance and prevents ground loops. Video distribution comes from a single workstation, and commanders (administrators) work at the keyboard/mouse workstations while viewing video on

multiple screens. Three of the many advantages of the DKM FX system are its flexibility, scalability, and instantaneous switching times. The DKM FX system extends audio, video, USB or serial peripherals, plus much more. The flexible system of switches, I/O cards, and chassis enables unique configurations for each application and client, and the configurations can easily be planned to accommodate the client’s growth. We think of Clary OneScreen as a living work canvas. On this one screen, people see the same information, see each other, manipulate the same materials, exchange ideas, discover possibilities—and they do all of this together, even if they are miles apart. When meeting room technologies really work together, they become transparent to the people using them and suddenly you have unconstrained access to people and information. And in that moment, you can finally realize all the benefits you were told would come from video conferencing, interactive whiteboarding, and collaboration tools. Productivity increases, sales meetings produce, training sessions involve, innovation sparks, relationships form, and business moves forward. Clary

ration solution that is simple to use and gives customers all the tools they need in a meeting room—the Clary OneScreen.

OneScreen into a larger room system.

Q: Tell us the story behind developing the Clary OneScreen.

A: We conducted a customer survey and found that 40 percent of those who had video conferencing systems or interactive whiteboards didn’t use them because they were simply too difficult to use. That’s a pretty sad statement but not really that surprising. Even at Clary, we struggled to use video conferencing. Meetings typically had a 20 minute wait time before we could actually start working.

There was clearly a need to integrate core conferencing and collaboration functionality into a single, easy-to-use product. So, we identified the best technologies for each of those core functions and that led us to Hitachi StarBoard touch software and Vidtel video conferencing service, Logitech HD cameras, displays from Sharp and LG, and Windows 7 for the operating system. We brought all of these recognized technologies together and manufactured a fully integrated collabo-

Q: How is the Clary OneScreen different from competing products?

A: The biggest advantage the OneScreen provides is a completely open architecture. You can install and run any Window’s compatible application right from the desktop instead of through a proprietary shell. This aspect is particularly important to users because it provides a familiar experience and doesn’t require a multi-step process to make a video call, open an Office document, or browse the Web. The OneScreen is easier to use than any competing product. Also, the Clary OneScreen is built from established, trusted brands. And we’ve built Vidtel access into the product to make video conferencing simple and included 1,000 Vidtel minutes with every Clary OneScreen annual service contract. You can also assign a PBX extension to the OneScreen and use it for audio conferencing. We’ve included six USB ports, multiple video inputs and outputs to make it easy to integrate the Clary

Q: Why should customers want a Clary OneScreen?

A: The Clary OneScreen is easy to use, affordable and makes it possible for customers to work together better than ever before – and more often. With the Clary OneScreen, remote training sessions include active participation with hands-on capabilities and visual connection between teams. Sales presentations compel conversations created with real-time whiteboard stories that leave PPT in the dust. Meetings solve problems by bringing in the right experts and information on the spot to inform decisions. What the Clary OneScreen comes down to is business progress. When meeting room technologies work together, companies realize the benefits of people working together. Q: How can our readers find out more about the Clary OneScreen?
