Welcome to the ninth edition of the Sourcebmx catalogue. This edition has even more pages dedicated to products than ever before, this issue also sees the addition of some in-depth guides to complete bikes, forks, handlebars and wheels which we hope you will find useful.

Because we are rider-owned we know what products will suit particular customers and we are here to offer you advice if you need it. So, if these guides are not quite enough for you then please just give us a call or fire through an email to our award winning customer service and sales staff (riders) and we will be happy to help.

Because this is the product issue don’t be fooled into thinking it’s all work and no play around here. We have been riding just as much as usual wheter it’s in our indoor bowl set-up or out in our Garden or on a trip around Europe or the UK, we have been shredding as hard as ever.

A GUIDE TO BMX BIKES.

If you are relatively new to BMX and are looking to get yourself a new BMX bike then these following four pages will guide you through the process and tell you everything you need to know about BMX bikes so you can make an informed decision and get the right bike for you. Below is a standard BMX bike broken up into component form so you know the pros and cons of each part and on the following pages are our very own recommendations of bikes to suit all budgets…

GLOSSARY 1.The Frame. All bikes start with the frame. Entry to intermediate level bikes use hi-tensile steel tubing but look for 4130 cromoly for increased durability and less weight on higher level bikes.

See the guide below for sizing info.

2.Forks. The same principle as the frame with regards to material. Look for CNC’d steerer tubes for greater durability and tapered legs for weight savings and a cleaner look. page 6/7

3.Handlebars, or just ‘bars’. Same principal for materials – 4130 is best and multi-butted tubing saves even more weight. The size is a personal preference with ‘rise’ referring to how high they are.

4.Headset. There are 2 types. Aheadsets are the older type with external cups whilst integrated headsets have sealed bearings that sit inside the frame itself. Integrated headsets save weight, look better and last longer.

5.Brakes. Some riders use them and some don’t. If you’re new to BMX or live on top of a hill then use a back brake! All of our complete bikes are sold with brakes whilst higher-end bikes come with removable brakes that can easily be removed/installed.

7.Rear Hub. There are two main types. A freewheel hub (13 tooth or larger) and the

more reliable and responsive cassette hub.

Cassette hubs come with smaller gearings (typically 9t) and are found on most decent bikes these days. Semi-sealed cassette hubs are good whilst sealed is better and a branded after-market hub even better still.

8. Gearing. The relation between the front and rear freewheel or cassette hub. The smaller the sprockets are, the more weight is saved and the more clearance there is when riding ramps or grinding. A 25-9t is considered the best on complete bikes.

5. Brakes

*Only available to customers in mainland UK.

We are pleased to announce that we are now offering our bike in a box service free of charge on all BMX bikes. This means that you don’t have to waste time building your new bike up when it arrives or even lug it back from a shop. Your bike would have been 99% assembled by one of our qualified mechanics and shipped to you in one of our custom bike boxes - this popular service used to be chargeable but is now free of charge. You even get a text and email giving you a 1-hour timeslot for delivery!

4. Headset

Once you receive your bike all you will have to do is locate the parts box containing your pedals and free tool kit. Screw your pedals into the cranks and tighten with the wrench provided.

Then all that is left to do is turn the bars straight so they are in line with the front wheel and tighten the pinch bolts on the side of the stem with the 6mm allen key provided. All the time consuming and fiddly stuff like brakes, headsets and bearings are done for you so you should be out on your bike within five minutes flat.

2. Forks

If you want the ultimate bike and something completely unique to you then the only option is a custom build. Whilst all the complete bikes we sell are fully upgradeable to aftermarket parts later on, we can build a complete custom build from scratch and save you 10% at the same time!

With a custom-built BMX bike, you get to tailor every part to your liking; from the frame to the spoke nipples. After-market parts are the best you can get and mean that you can customise a bike to your style; by mixing and matching brands, sizes, colours and parts specific to your type of riding. Just look at a bike and pick every part you’d like from these pages and our website……it’s fun to make up a dream bike!

We build lots of custom bikes and are on hand to help from start-to-finish if you need some advice; just give us a call or drop us an email. You can either tell us your height, riding style and budget and we can suggest a perfect set-up or if you know what you want you can run everything by us to doublecheck compatibility or see if there’s something you’ve missed.

Custom Bikes typically cost from £900 a 10% discount off of this and fully build to-ride right out of the box. If there’s a to keep from your existing set-up that’s

9.Rims. The outside of the wheel.

These come in single or double wall versions. Double wall is strongest and is more important on the rear which takes more abuse than the front.

10.Tyres. Usually wider on the front than on the back though many bikes now come with a fat rear tyre also.

Branded after-market tyres are best here.

11.Cranks and BB. Cranks take a lot of abuse on a bike and need to be

strong enough to match your level of riding. Tubular cranks are best whilst branded cranks are better still.

There are 3 types of Bottom Bracket (BB).

U.S are the largest and normally come with unsealed bearings. Smaller Mid or Spanish BB’s are usually sealed and a result last longer and require minimal maintenance.

12. Pedals. Most bikes come with plastic pedals now; branded versions tend to be the best. Alloy pedals last longer and grip

better but hurt your shins more when your slip and also uslually weigh more.

13. Seats. There are 3 types of seat. Railed or combo seats are found on the entry level bikes whilst pivitol seats are found on intermediate to pro bikes. Pivitol seats are easier to install/adjust and save weight.

14. Stem. The bit that holds your bars to the forks. All stems are comparable in strength but CNC’d versions are lighter and offer a much cleaner look.

much smaller 12” bike for the real little guys. Also new for 2012 United have released their RNJR bike which is a 20” wheeled bike but made with a smaller frame and tweaked geometry which makes for a perfect stop gap between the 18” bikes and full size 20” bikes.

ENTRY BIKES (FROM £200 to £350)

Entry level bikes are designed to be your first BMX bike or your first “proper bmx bike” and are typically suited to all types of riding. Chances are if you’re in the market for an entry level bike, you are new to this and you can find the choice a little overwhelming. Firstly the best thing to remember is that we don’t stock any “bad bikes” so you just need to find something to suit your needs.

So with that said; if you are just starting out and want to go to your local skatepark to give it a go then something from the cheaper end of this price bracket will be perfect (like something from the Jet BMX range; left). If you are little more advanced, i.e have ridden before and plan to hit the skatepark up every night, then you might benefit from the improved spec and strength you can find on the higher level bikes in this range (Like the United RN1 or Verde Cadet; above).

A good thing to remember is that whatever bike you end up starting on, all of our bikes are fully upgradeable with the after-market parts you can find in this catalogue.

MID BIKES (FROM £350 to £500)

Mid level bikes cover quite a broad price range and basically apply to all models which are not an entry bike but equally not quite a pro bike but fall somewhere in-between. These are the models which are made to accommodate the needs of most of today’s riders, whether it be their second bike, having moved up from the entry level range or even their 3rd

or 4th bike. These bikes are built with many of the same features as Pro bikes, like integrated head tubes, Cr-mo tubes, sealed bearings and removable brakes but are still produced to accommodate the rider with a budget. These models usually feature some after-market parts, a pro rider endorsement and can be tailored to specific types of riding with

specific geometry or a parts package to suit street riding for instance.

These models provide a higher quality of bike, usually lighter and always stronger to hold up to the constant and progressive riding day in and day out.

Perfect just as they are or great as a platform to start your own custom from, customising parts as you progress.

PRO BIKES (FROM £500 UPWARDS)

If you are looking at investing in a BMX for something over the £500 mark then chances are you have been riding for a while and you know what you want and need a bike which can keep up with your level of riding. Bikes at the lower end of this price bracket like the Fit 2 and 3 series, United Supreme Series, Verde Theory or Spectrum and Versus or Trust from WTP all offer great value for money and are great quality bikes in their own right. They also offer a great platform from which to upgrade your ride as your level of riding increases. Expect sealed bearings throughout, removable brakes, Crmo frames and forks and a whole bunch of after-market parts on these bikes. As you get further and further above the £500 price you will find that the bikes get more and more like custom builds sometimes with the entire bike being built from after-market parts, much like this Fit bike below which is built around Fit’s after-market Wifi frame.

The frame is the most important part of any bike and the most influential component to how your bike feels and performs.

When you are asked what bike you have, you will reply with the make and model of your frame. So what are the differences in these seemingly similar looking frames? First of all; after-market frames are constructed from a higher grade of materials and use more advanced manufacturing processes from the frames which can be found on complete bikes (with a few of the pro level bikes excluded). This is not to say that the frames on complete bikes are bad - it is just that aftermarket frames have been made to such a high spec with advanced materials and processes like butted tubing, invest cast areas and heat treatments that they squeeze the last drop of performance out of the metal they are made from.

FRAME BUYERS GUIDE

There are subtle differences too in the geometry of these after-market frames which make them suit different types of riding more than other frames. First of all the top tube length needs to be to your liking and indeed suit your height, for example a 20.5” top tube length is about the middle ground - with the longer ones being more stable and shorter ones being more twitchy. The same goes for the rear end length or chain stay length - if you go fast and jump big things you probably want some more length here than a technical street rider. There are many things which affect the way a frame rides, most of which is covered below along with some featured frames we think are amongst the best right now. This is Jason Phelan’s signature frame from Wethepeople, The one pictured is also a limited edition Green colour way which Jason rides and is exclusive to Sourcebmx.

If you are a technical street rider like Ben Lewis then frame geometry which promotes agility is what you need. This Benny L model is full of agility thanks to its super steep head tube, laid back seat tube angle and compact rear end. The Benny L is built for street and has a double gusset up front for strength, heat treated dropouts which will hold up well to grinds and massive tyre clearance for that huge tyre you are going to run on the back. TT – The length of the Top Tube is what all BMX bikes and frames are measured by. A longer top tube will make the handling of the bike more stable and give the taller rider more room. A shorter top tube will make the bike more responsive.

Getting the wrong size bike or frame will hinder your riding and comfort.

TT

CS. Chain Stay is essentially the length of the rear end of the bike. A shorter CS length will make the bike more responsive and a longer one more stable.

HT. Head Tube angle determines the angle of your forks. A steeper HT (i.e. 75) will make the bike turn quicker than a mellower angle (i.e.74).

SO ST

ST. Seat Tube angles don’t vary too much (around 71) and affect the centre of gravity. The steeper the angle the shorter your bike will feel.

The Mothership is Nathan Williams’ signature ride. Nathan Williams is one of the finest street riders around at the moment and kills both technical street lines as well as fast gaps and gnarly drops. The Motherships geometry reflects this style and features a steep (ish) head tube and a average length back end at 13.6” making this frame suitable for all sorts of riding. The attention to detail on the Mothership is what we have come to expect from United. For example the dropouts on this frame are heat treated for strength, flattened on the inside to make hub guards fit better and shaped to fit the diameter of a United peg perfectly. Handlebar technology has come on quite a way in recent years and as a result we are now all riding stronger and lighter bars than, say, ten years ago. The main reason for this is the advancement in materials and the manufacturing processes used like post weld heat treatment and multi butted tubing which means the tubing is thicker on the bends and thinner in the straight sections creating a strong but light handlebar.

HANDLEBAR GUIDE

Despite looking similar to each other, BMX handlebars come in a variety of different sizes with small variations in geometry and therefore feel. Over the past few years riders have started to favour larger handlebars than previous generations and at present a handlebar with something from an 8.25” to 8.75” rise is the average. Typically speaking, street riders will prefer a slightly smaller, narrower bar than a trails rider for instance as it gives more clearance for barspin tricks etc but is totally down to rider preference. Check out the diagrams below to familiarise yourself with angles and measurements of a BMX bar.

A. Rise. This is the height of the handlebars. This measurement is taken from the middle of the clamping area (where the bars attach to the stem) to the middle of the grip area.

B. Upsweep. The angle of which the bars bend upward on the grip area of the bars with 0° being flat.

C. Width. This is measured in a straight line from the end of each side of the handlebar in inches.

D. Back sweep. The angle which the grip area of the bars bend back towards the rider. Typically somewere around 12° is normal, a lower degree will be flat and a higher degree will bend towards you more.

These are Reed Starks signature handlebars from BSD. The Giraffic’s feature a pretty hefty 9” rise and are super wide at 29.5”. Made using the same tried and tested methods as BSD’s other bars from heat treated and Multi butted 4130. Available in gloss or ED black or chrome with Reeds’ Giraffe decals.

S&M make a wide range of bars in all sizes and shapes and these are Mike Hoders signature model. The Hoders feature a large 8.65” rise and are made from true temper heat treated, 4130 in the USA. They feature straight gauge tubing for strength and are available in black, chrome and cool trans colours.

The Midroid bar from Mutiny. These have a rise of 8.3” and are therefore a little bigger than Mutiny’s glam bar and a little smaller than their Glamroid bar - hence the name. Made from post weld heat treated and multi butted 4130 for maximum weight to strength ratio and available in lots and lots of colours.

photo feature | germany This past summer we took ourselves on a little trip to Berlin, Germany.

There was six of us packed into the Source van and staying in a hostel in downtown Berlin. Trips are always the best fun and this was no exception, despite the rubbish weather. By the time you read this there will be an edit of the fun times had on our webiste - so be sure to check that out.

photo feature | matt priest In early September this year, after the Vans kill the line trails comp at the legendary Peynier trails, Matt Priest took himself on a little trip around the south of France. Sampling some sun which had long since departed from these shores, Matt hit up some trails and concrete parks.

Whilst on this trip he clocked up some footage, added it to the stuff he already had from home (including footage from the cover shoot for Ride mag) and put together his 2012 edit for Sourcebmx.

We have our very own indoor skatepark at our shop in Hastings. As well as giving us all somewhere to ride, we hire it out to groups for private sessions at a cost of £20 for 2 hours (total price per session for up to 10 people). If you head over to our website

Our courier emails you a one-hour time slot on the morning of your delivery so you don't have to wait in all day. Smaller items are sent 1st class via Royal Mail. UK delivery charges range from ÂŁ3.50 to a maximum of ÂŁ5.75 and are calculated automatically on our website.

STOCK : We hold the biggest stocks in Europe of quality BMX bikes and parts and have deliveries of fresh stock daily. If you visit our website you can view exactly what we have in stock or if it's out, a date when it is due back in.
