TERM

3 2025

from the Headmaster

As we draw breath at the close of another School Term, I am once again filled with pride as we reflect on the achievements and undertakings of our students. It has been, quite simply, a jam-packed Term – but one overflowing with energy and possibility.

One of the highlights was the first ever NQ High School Campdraft, an event that not only showcased the talents of our students but also demonstrated the strength of character they bring to every challenge. Many took on leadership roles through the Executive Committee and other key responsibilities across the weekend, a clear example of our School motto, Servire Regnare – to serve is to reign.

Our Senior Girls once again led with courage and generosity, raising over $20,000 for charity through “rocking the chop.” Their actions embodied resilience, compassion, and the kind of example that inspires our entire community.

On the sporting front, this year’s Senior School Athletics Carnival was one of the most tightly contested in CTSSA history, decided by just a single point. While we may not have taken home the shield, the determination, sportsmanship, and unity displayed by our athletes was a victory in itself.

The Arts have also flourished, with students

impressing at the Eisteddfod, bringing stories to life in the Scene Project, and showcasing the depth of creativity that enriches our School. Just as important have been the joyful moments in our Junior School – from Father’s Day celebrations to the Fairy Tale Disco, as well as excursions that brought learning to life, whether paddock-to-plate experiences or exploring the vibrant history, culture and heritage of our country in Canberra.

It has been equally inspiring to welcome our future All Souls St Gabriels students at the Orientation Program. These occasions are always special, offering a glimpse of the energy and enthusiasm our newest students will bring as they begin their journey with us.

As we look ahead, our focus now turns to the Awards Ceremonies, where we will celebrate the talents, commitment, and spirit of our students. These occasions also remind us of the privilege of farewelling our senior students, whose time here has shaped them and whose next steps will carry them into the wider world. I have no doubt they will continue to serve, lead, and inspire wherever their journeys take them.

I extend my thanks to all who have contributed to another rich and rewarding Term – our students, families, and staff alike. Together, we continue to build a community where each young person has the opportunity to thrive.

Captains’ Corner

This Term has been a busy and exciting one for our School, with many highlights and achievements to celebrate.

We kicked off the Term with the Inter-School Athletics Carnival, where many of our top athletes proudly represented All Souls St Gabriels School. Throughout the day, our competitors gave their best efforts in both track and field events, with the competition remaining close from start to finish. The overall result came down to the wire, with only a single point separating us from Blackheath and Thornburgh College. While we narrowly missed out on first place, finishing second overall, our athletes still produced outstanding performances. We celebrated multiple Age Champions and Runners-Up, as well as taking home the trophy for the boys’ division—a true reflection of the hard work and determination shown by all involved.

Another highlight of the Term was the Combined Schools Formal, a memorable night where students came together to celebrate in style. It was a fantastic evening filled with laughter, dancing, and the chance to enjoy time with friends in a more formal setting.

We also welcomed the Year 6 students for their Orientation Program. This was an opportunity for our future students to experience life at ASSG, meet new friends, and get a taste of the exciting opportunities

that await them next year.

Finally, this Term we competed in the NQ High School Cup, a Campdrafting Competition where we entered three teams of 10 students. Our riders showed great skill and teamwork as they went head-to-head with other schools, achieving strong results and proudly representing ASSG in this growing competition.

Overall, this Term has been filled with achievements, memorable moments, and opportunities for our students to shine both in and out of the classroom.

After watching the boys lead the way in the World’s Greatest Shave, it was the girls’ turn to take action. Sixteen Year 12 students, alongside three passionate staff members, bravely ‘rocked the chop’ as part of the Cancer Council’s Ponytail Project. Together, we raised over $20,000 to support Australians affected by cancer and donated countless ponytails to help create wigs for those undergoing treatment. This was more than just a haircut — it was a powerful act of service, solidarity, and community. We’re incredibly proud to have made a difference.

Midway through the Term, we celebrated Science Week. The Science Department brought the labs to life with a variety of experiments, quizzes, and hands-on challenges that engaged and inspired our

YASMIN MUSK & SAM COWAN SCHOOL CAPTAINS

students. It was a fantastic opportunity for everyone to explore the wonders of science and ignite their curiosity.

Term 3 was dedicated to the Arts. With the sports season becoming less intense, our students embraced the chance to shine at the Charters Towers Eisteddfod. Many ASSG students proudly represented the School through choir performances, solos, verse speaking, and visual arts. It was truly inspiring to witness so many students showcase their creativity and talent. Several earned placements, and we congratulate all participants for their hard work and enthusiasm — we look forward to seeing their continued growth next year.

This Term also brought a special treat for our staff. In Week 7, our Year 12 Hospitality students planned and executed a beautifully catered High Tea as part of their assessment. The students demonstrated incredible skill and dedication, impressing staff with their delicious and elegant offerings. It was a memorable occasion that celebrated their efforts and talents.

As Term 3 drew to a close, the competitive spirit returned in a different form with the Inter-House Academic Competition. All six Houses competed in a relay race spanning four categories, followed by a creative freezeframe activity where each House brought the Gold Rush to life through imaginative

group performances. The event was full of excitement, teamwork, and strategic thinking. In the end, the mighty Page House emerged victorious, with Chad and Page sharing the overall championship title.

Junior School Captains’ Corner

This Term has been action packed, with lots of events to entertain and engage Junior School students. Alongside the Senior School students we all had the opportunity to join in on some Science and HPE Week activities to further our learning with some hands on experiences. Visits from Dance North & a circus company entertained us and taught us many co-operative skills in a fun environment.

On the sports field we enjoyed bringing home both the Average and Aggregrate Trophies at the Inter-School Athetics Carnival, held here at ASSG. At the recent Cricket Blast Cup Gala Day one of our teams finished undefeated and won the School Championship.

Junior School students also took part in recognising RUOK Day and represented the School proudly at the annual eisteddfod with all the classes taking home great results. We have also hosted some potential new students during our recent Come and Try Day. The highlight of the Term for many students was the Junior School Disco which was held in the last week.

The Year 6 class travelled down to the Australian Capital, Canberra, where we learnt about Australian politics, the city itself and many interesting things about Australia’s history. The Year 5’s also got to go on camp to Wambiana Station where they learnt all about the Paddock to Plate process.

Workshops

This Term the Junior School students were entertained by visits from Dance North and Circus Challenge. Dance North presented a workshop for students in Pre-prep to Year 6 where they learnt a variety of dance moves which were combined to form a short routine. The Circus Challenge visit involved an interactive performance for all students followed by a workshop for our Prep-Year 6 students where they learnt circus skills such as plate juggling. These skills are designed to develop concentration and hand-eye coordination in an engaging way. The students enjoyed these so much that we have purchased some of the spinning plates and students are continuing to practice at break times.

Father’s Day

Our Junior School families enjoyed a wonderful afternoon celebrating Father’s Day together. From a delicious sausage sizzle to fun novelty activities and classroom visits, it was fantastic to see so many Dads, Grandads, and special figures on campus. The smiles, laughter, and connections made the occasion truly memorable. A big thank you to our staff for their efforts in making the event a success, and to Titleys Department Store for generously donating our raffle prizes.

Most of all we would like to thank everyone who joined us on campus for a fantastic afternoon celebrating the special people in our life.

Inter-School

On the last Monday of Term, our Senior School students took to the field for the annual Inter-School Rugby 7s Competition, showcasing impressive skill, determination, and school spirit across all age divisions.

ASSG celebrated strong results throughout the carnival. The 13s Boys and 15s Girls both claimed victory in their finals, while the Opens Girls put in a spirited performance to finish runners-up in a hard-fought Grand Final. The Opens Boys were unfortunately unable to contest their final, but their consistency was undeniable as they

went through the entire carnival undefeated.

The event was a fantastic celebration of rugby, with players demonstrating teamwork, resilience, and pride in representing their school. A big thank you is extended to Columba Catholic College for hosting such a well-run carnival, and to Bulls Rugby Union for the use of their excellent facilities.

Congratulations to all players, coaches, and supporters for representing ASSG with such pride — both on and off the field.

Rugby 7s

Athletics

Junior School Inter-School

This year, the Inter-School Athletics Carnival was hosted at ASSG, and what a day it proved to be. Our team of 48 students represented the School with pride, determination, and outstanding sportsmanship. From the beginning, it was evident that the effort and commitment shown during the lead-up training sessions had truly paid off.

During the first session of the day, our athletes consistently placed in the top three across the sprint events, setting the tone for a day filled with ribbons, points, and a strong sense of team spirit. ASSG celebrated two Age Champions and two Runner-Up Age

Champions—an exceptional result.

Remarkably, we broke the drought, for the first time in the 20-year history of the current Aggregate Trophy, we now get to etch our name into its story. In 2025, we proudly claimed both the Average Champion Shield and the Aggregate Champion Shield. This is a fantastic achievement and a testament to the dedication of our students, coaches, and supporters.

Nine ASSG students were invited to attend the Northern Sport Trials in Townsville, and from there, one student has made the North Queensland Team.

Senior School Inter-School

Congratulations to all students who represented ASSG at the 2025 Inter-School Athletics Carnival. It was inspiring to see so many competitors giving their best efforts and proudly wearing the ASSG colours.

ASSG achieved some outstanding results, winning both the Boys Relay Trophy and the Boys Aggregate Trophy. The team also secured second place overall, finishing just one point behind the eventual winners, Blackheath

& Thornbrough College. It was a close and competitive carnival, and we congratulate all schools and athletes on their achievements.

A special mention goes to our students who were named Age Champions or RunnersUp in their respective divisions. Your efforts contributed greatly to this excellent result, and we are incredibly proud of every student who competed.

Inter-House Tennis

Throughout the Term, both the girls’ and boys’ Inter-House Tennis Competitions were held, giving students across all age groups the chance to showcase their skills, teamwork, and House spirit. The courts were alive with energy as players battled through their matches, cheered on by their peers, and demonstrated great determination and sportsmanship.

In the Girls’ Competition, strong performances were seen across every division. Champions included Lucinda Reardon (13 Years), Georgina Chappel (14 Years), Vivienne Knight (15 Years), Hollie Laffin (16 Years) and Ada Luke (Open Girls). Vivienne was also named Girls School Champion, with Georgina finishing Runner-Up. In the overall standings, Alban House proved the most consistent and claimed the Girls’ Title.

The Boys’ Competition was equally competitive, with many hard-fought matches. Champions were Brayden Garner (12 Years), William Knight (13 Years), Curtis Reardon (14 Years), Slade Delacour (15 Years), Kaelan Atkinson (16 Years), and Billy Elliott (Open Boys). Curtis went undefeated to be crowned the Overall School Champion, while Billy Elliott earned Runner-Up honours.

In the final points tally, Ramsay House was crowned the 2025 Boys Tennis Champions.

To round out the competition, a Social Mixed Doubles event brought students together for a fun and inclusive afternoon of tennis. This was a wonderful celebration of participation, teamwork, and House spirit, and a fitting way to close out the season.

Congratulations to all players for their outstanding efforts and commitment, and thank you to the staff and supporters, including Mr Single and Mr Gibson, whose efforts ensured the smooth running of the competitions.

Cattle Club

The All Souls St Gabriels School Cattle Club continued its remarkable run of success at the 2025 Charters Towers Show, claiming top honours for the ninth consecutive year.

In judging, the team of Hayley Fox, Sophie Shultz, and Dustin Finger secured first place in both Team Pen Judging and Team Commercial Judging. Dustin was awarded Reserve Overall Judge, with Sophie placing second and Haley third in Stud Judging. Other highlights included Lanika Shore, Abbey McClymont, and Jake Griffiths finishing third in Team Judging, and Jake also named North West Overall Handling Champion. Sophie

went on to place third in the North West Overall Judging and Handling competition.

ASSG’s cattle also shone, with “Marshmallow” crowned Champion Steer, “CG” placing second, and “Dangles” finishing third in their classes. These results helped ASSG secure second overall in the North West QLD Shield, a reflection of the team’s consistency and dedication.

The ongoing success of the Cattle Club is a credit to the students, the strength of the agricultural program, and the invaluable guidance of Mr Keith Hanson.

NQ High School

Throughout the Term, three All Souls St Gabriels School teams proudly participated in the first ever NQ High School Campdraft, hosted here in Charters Towers.

The event began on Thursday evening with a Meet-and-Greet BBQ, followed by the official Grand Parade on Friday morning. Students looked outstanding in presentation, with a special mention to Lucy Elliot who delivered a beautiful performance of the national anthem.

The first round of competition kicked off with plenty of cheering and encouragement from the sidelines as riders gave their all. Congratulations to Cate Trevor, who claimed first place in this opening round. After a short lunch break, the atmosphere shifted to light-hearted fun with moto games, where competitors tested their skills in tugof-war and a boot race across the arena.

The afternoon brought the second round, where Jamie Mills showcased her ability with a flawless full course ride, securing the win. More fun followed after dinner with crowd-favourite moto games — a broomstick barrel relay and a hay bale roll — which even saw parents joining in on the action.

Saturday began with the team finals, where each rider competed on one horse to earn points for their team. The support and enthusiasm from teammates was louder than ever. This was followed by the individual finals, featuring the top 15 riders from the earlier rounds. Congratulations to Adley Crozier, who rode exceptionally well to be crowned Overall Individual Winner for the weekend.

The event concluded with presentations, where ASSG’s efforts were widely recognised:

Highlighting a season of growth, skill, and determination. Both teams displayed impressive teamwork and sportsmanship, making for a thrilling match.

A huge thank you to CTNA for another successful season and to everyone who contributed to making it a memorable year for Gabes Netball.

It has been an impressive season for ASSG debaters! Our Junior, Intermediate, and Senior teams brought energy, teamwork, and skill to the Charters Towers Inter-School Debating Competition.

The Senior team finished strongly in third place, while our Junior and Intermediate teams advanced to the Finals at BTC, presenting persuasive arguments on “Zoos should be banned” and “Robots are better teachers than humans.” Both

teams proudly claimed second place.

We are proud of all our students for their resilience, integrity, and spirit throughout the competition.

This success would not have been possible without the dedication of staff who supported the teams: Mr Pettis, Miss Fitzgerald, Mrs Laffin, Mrs Juhas, Mrs McKay, Mrs Dietrich, Mr Dietrich and Mrs Bennetto.

Inter-School Debating QAMT Maths Camp

A group of Year 10 students recently attended the QAMT Maths Camp on Magnetic Island alongside students from other schools. The camp offered a mix of hands-on challenges, problemsolving activities, and team competitions.

Students worked in mixed groups to build bridges from straws, solve equations in the “Intersection at the Jetty” challenge, and tackle number pattern competitions. Highlights included archery, calculating the volume of

sand to create a Pi symbol, and estimating the weight of Sail Rock using measurements and samples. The camp concluded with an Amazing Race-style challenge, testing teamwork, strategy, and quick thinking, with one group emerging as overall winners.

Special thanks to Mrs Bowley for organising our students to attend the camp and to Mr Gibson for accompanying the students and supporting them throughout the experience.

Senior School Inter-House Academics

FINGER - ACADEMIC PREFECT

The annual Inter-House Academics Competition was held during Week 7, bringing together students from all Houses to showcase their knowledge and teamwork. Participants were quizzed on a variety of subjects including HASS, Science, English, and Mathematics. The fast-paced rounds created an exciting atmosphere, with each House striving to secure valuable points for their team.

Adding to the challenge was a creative freezeframe activity based on the Australian Gold Rush. Students worked collaboratively to capture key moments in history through still poses, combining imagination with historical understanding. This activity highlighted not only their knowledge but also their ability to think outside the box and work effectively as a group.

After a spirited competition, Page House claimed the overall victory. Their consistent performance across both the quiz rounds and the freeze-frame challenge secured them the top position. The Inter-House Academics Competition was a wonderful celebration of learning, creativity, and school spirit, and all students are to be congratulated on their efforts.

Year 11 Leadership Camp

Our Year 11 students enjoyed three days of adventure, teamwork, and personal growth at Leadership Camp at Virginia Park. Students tackled high-energy team-building activities and showcased their creativity in a fun-filled talent show.

The camp highlighted hidden talents, encouraged students to step outside their comfort zones, and strengthened camaraderie

across the group. We look forward to seeing this cohort continue to grow as they prepare to step into their roles as our new leaders in the year ahead.

A huge thank you to the team at Virginia Park for hosting us — we are fortunate to have such wonderful opportunities right in our own backyard!

Paddock to Plate

Year 5 Camp

The Year 5’s were enthusiastic to see Black River Produce Farms and Wambiana Station as part of their Outdoor Education/Paddock to Plate Design Technology Unit. The students learnt how the pumpkins and watermelons were grown, picked, packed and marketed from the farm. After that we drove out to Wambiana to learn about beef production.

The children were involved in hands on activities including pregnancy testing, bottle feeding, castrating, dipping and branding the cattle. Other activities the students enjoyed were making their own beef burger patty from scratch, whip cracking and learning about the historic buildings, land management, RFDS and Distance Education.

The Year 5’s were very grateful for the opportunity to camp for the night and experience the many and varied activities.

Canberra Trip Year 6

PETER TURNER - YEAR 6 TEACHER

Our Year 6 students recently travelled to Canberra to consolidate their learning of Civics and Citizenship in the subject area of HASS. One of the highlights of the trip was visiting Parliament House, where students toured the chambers and learned how laws are made. They saw first-hand where the Prime Minister and other members of parliament debate and make decisions that shape our country.

Another important stop was the Australian War Memorial, where students reflected on the sacrifices made by Australians in times of war and peacekeeping. The group also

explored other national institutions, including the National Library, Museum of Australian Democracy, National Capital Museum and Questacon, which gave them insights into how knowledge and innovation contribute to Australia’s identity and an understanding of the democratic processes we use to elect the country’s leaders. Evening activities included laser tag and ice skating. The trip was a wonderful experience for the Year 6 class and was made possible through the assistance of the $900 per student contribution provided by the PACER (Parliament and Civics Education Rebate).

Fairytale Disco

The Junior School wrapped up the Term in the most magical way, with a Fairytale Theme Disco. Students arrived dressed as their favourite characters, filling the space with princes, princesses, knights, fairies, and even a few unexpected storybook surprises.

A huge thank you goes to the staff, parents, and helpers who dedicated their time and energy to make the disco such a success. Your efforts in planning, decorating, and supporting the night truly brought the fairytale to life.

Junior School Sport Soccer & Netball

This Term our Junior School students proudly represented ASSG in the Inter-School Soccer and Netball Competitions. It was a fantastic season filled with teamwork, sportsmanship, and determination across both codes.

In the Soccer Competition, our team showed great spirit and resilience on the field, finishing the season third on the ladder. In the Netball Competition, the team was

consistent across the competition, finishing in second place overall.

We would also like to acknowledge the Year 5 students who stepped up into the teams while the Year 6 students were away in Canberra.

A big congratulations goes to all our Junior School Athletes for the way they represented ASSG with pride.

The Scene Project

Our talented Arts students proudly represented ASSG in the Scene Project, Queensland Theatre Company’s statewide drama initiative. This program gives students the full creative experience—from rehearsal to live performance—adapting a brand-new professional play into their own

unique 15-minute interpretation. After weeks of dedication and creativity, our students brought their performance to life on stage, impressing audiences with their teamwork, skill, and passion. They should be very proud of their efforts!

Year 12 Hospitality High Tea

Our Year 12 Hospitality students treated staff to a fully catered High Tea as part of their assessment task. From planning and practice to preparation, the students delivered an impressive spread of sweet and savoury delights, paired with refreshing mocktails. The feedback was glowing, with many staff finding it hard to return to work after such a delicious feast!

Rocking the Chop Ponytail Project

Our Senior girls and staff showed incredible courage and community spirit during the recent ponytail-cutting event. Twenty brave participants faced nerves and excitement alike, all to support those impacted by cancer.

Together, they have raised over $20,000 — a remarkable achievement for a smaller community and a powerful testament to the generosity, commitment, and strength of the ASSG family. Every ponytail chopped contributes directly to vital cancer research and support services.

Well done to all involved — your courage and dedication have inspired us all.

2025

Boarding

Term 3

This Term has been filled with fun, connection, and community spirit for our boarders. Highlights included river trips, dorm visits with afternoon tea, and plenty of movie nights, with both drive-in and an outdoor cinema on O’Keeffe providing lots of laughter under the stars.

Our boarders enjoyed a special outing to King Pin and Laser Tag before heading to Willows Shopping Centre for some well-deserved retail therapy. Others took on the Escape Room Challenge in Townsville, working together to solve puzzles and test their teamwork skills.

Service also played an important role this Term, with several boarders volunteering at Park Run, proudly representing All Souls St Gabriels School in the wider community. It has truly been a wonderful Term of shared experiences, and we look forward to all that Term 4 will bring.

Orientation Welcome to ASSG

We were delighted to welcome our newest students and families to the All Souls St Gabriels School community through our 2025 Orientation Program. From a warm and friendly Meet & Greet BBQ and information session to a full day of activities, tours, and fun on campus, it was a fantastic introduction to life at ASSG.

Students explored classrooms, took part in academic sessions, enjoyed sport and teambuilding activities, toured the Rural Precinct,

and raced around campus in the ever-popular Amazing Race. Boarding students also gained a first-hand look into residential life.

A heartfelt thank you to all staff, student leaders, and families who helped make the program such a success.

To our newest students — welcome to the ASSG family! We can’t wait to see everything you achieve in the years ahead.

R U OK? Day

Our community came together to recognise R U OK? Day, a national initiative that encourages Australians to have meaningful conversations and check in with those around them. The message is simple: you don’t need to be an expert to reach out. If you notice someone you care about might be struggling, a conversation could make a big difference.

Blackhawks Visit ASSG

ASSG was fortunate to welcome members of the Townsville & Districts Mendi Blackhawks to campus while they were in town for the Country Round of the Hostplus Cup.

During assembly, the players spoke with students about the importance of resilience — both on the sporting field and in everyday life — sharing valuable lessons and personal

experiences. Afterwards, students joined the Blackhawks on the oval for a lively game of backyard touch football, which was filled with energy, fun, and plenty of healthy competition.

We extend our thanks to the Blackhawks for taking the time to visit ASSG and for inspiring our students both on and off the field.
