CHARTERS TOWERS

Welcome to the first edition of the new look Phoenix Rising. I have no doubt that you will enjoy this termly magazine as it sets out to celebrate the successes of our students in the many and varied opportunities available to them at ASSG.
This term has been marked by the beginning of the first phase of our new strategic plan, following the community consultation and its collaborative development in 2022, it is exciting to be finally bringing it to life through our annual improvement agenda.
Exciting early developments as part of our annual improvement agenda that can be seen in this edition of the Phoenix Rising include:
• Our commitment to becoming a Gateway to Industry School (GISP) for Agribusiness
• A partnership project with the University of Queensland to enhance teaching and learning
• Our commitment to expanding extra-curricular offerings; including a Campdraft Clinic, Netball
and Rugby Union trip to Emerald, and participation in the inaugural North Queensland Anglican Schools Music Festival
• The development of a School App
• A new partnership with SchoolTV, a resource to support parents in communicating with their children on difficult topics.
We have made good progress to start 2023 and I am grateful for the support of our staff, students, and community for their commitment in bringing to life our vision: shaping students who seize opportunities and have the skills, knowledge, and desire to contribute lead and serve.
I look forward to connecting with you during Term 2.

Term 1 has been busy. As is tradition, Day 1 of Term 1 is the Installation of School Captains and Prefects. As a group, we are honoured to lead the School this year.
The term has been packed with many sporting carnivals and extra-curricular sporting events. The term kicked off with a competitive Inter-House Swimming Carnival, where many students demonstrated their house spirit, leaving everything in the pool. Following the Inter-House Carnival, the Inter-School Team was selected to compete against the other local schools. With a number off Age Champions and runners-up, we came away with the Don Doyle Shield, for the 13, 14 and 15 Years Girls Relay.
Students had the amazing opportunity to travel down to Emerald and compete against Marist College Emerald and Emerald State High in Netball and Rugby Union. All age groups from 12 Years to Open had both a Netball and Rugby Union team participating in the weekend carnival. This was a great opportunity for teammates to bond and get to know one another better, whilst developing skills and enjoying the opportunities presented. The Emerald trip was a great way to allow all teams to find their feet before Club and Interschool sport started in Charters Towers. In Term 2, the Emerald schools will travel to ASSG to play Netball and Rugby League. We look forward to welcoming them.
Towards the end of term, the students were more than excited to participate in our Inter-House Cross-Country. The great House rivalries are part of what makes this event so special in the calendar and it certainly did not disappoint. Competitors from all Houses ran their hardest and it was great to see the encouragement and participation demonstrated by all students.
It was a very exciting Term 1 in Junior School. We must start by saying a big thank you to the P&F for the new fan that is in our undercover area. With all the super-hot days, this has brought a great relief to our students and staff. Year 4, 5 and 6 students presented their leadership speeches early in the term and we had a beautiful Chapel service to acknowledge and install our newly elected Junior School Leaders for 2023. The Year 3 and Year 5 students did a superb job in their NAPLAN tests this term and really deserved their pizza, popcorn and popper party. We were so proud of how hard they worked. Our term ended with our Inter-House Cross Country Carnival with Chad and Page being our overall winners. It was an exciting way to finish our term and it was great to see every student have so much fun. We are looking forward to Term 2 and supporting our students with all of the amazing things they are going to accomplish.
On the first day of term we acknowledged our Dux of School and Proxime Accessit (runner up to Dux). Our Dux of 2023 was Amelia Wearing, who also recieved the Morris Prize. Our Proxime Accessit was Caitlyn Elliott. Congratulations Girls!
Milli Goodwin & Taryn Woodard took part in the inaugural North Queensland Anglican Schools Music Festival which was hosted by The Cathedral School of St Anne & St James in the last weekend of the Christmas/New Year school holidays.
Milli and Taryn joined students from fellow Regional Anglican schools, Trinity Anglican School (Cairns), Whitsunday Anglican School (Mackay), and The Cathedral School of St Anne & St James (Townsville).
Thank you to teachers, Mrs Bronwen Hall & Mr Stephen Price for supervising Milli & Taryn.
At the end of Week 4 we had a number of ASSG Netball and Rugby Union teams travel to Emerald to play in the 2023 Champagnat Cup. Our teams spent the weekend playing games against Marist College Emerald, and Emerald State High School.
ASSG finished up the weekend as Runners Up to Marist College for the Champagnat Cup, only coming in second place by 50 points! Special mention goes to our Under 15’s Boys team who won their age division.
On the evenings of Thursday 9 and Friday 10 March, we hit the town pool and were off and racing for the start of the 2023 Inter-School Carnival. Thursday night’s events were the 100m and 200m races. It was great to see multiple swimmers able to get in the top three placings and put the All Souls St Gabriels School name on the leaderboard behind Columba Catholic College.
Friday night the carnival was full steam ahead with 80 races to get through, after some awesome performances from the team it was Columba Catholic College and All Souls St Gabriels School fighting for the top position.
Our 12, 13, 14, and 15’s girls showed some awesome efforts with most of them finishing 1st or 2nd in their races. Their amazing performances allowed us to come away with the Don Doyle Memorial Shield at the end of the night. The Morton Cup is the girl’s relay trophy and was so close to coming home with us. We were only 5 points be-
hind Columba Catholic College, who won the cup but well done to all girls who were a part of these teams as we gave it our all.
I would also like to thank our coaches Mr Glover and Mrs Dickson, you have been great coaches and helped everyone get ready for the carnival. Lastly, a big thank you goes to Miss Taylor and Mrs Twine for the great carnival they put together.

On Friday 17 March, the All Souls St Gabriels School Inter-School Tennis team travelled to the town courts to battle it out for the Inter-School Championship. The afternoon kicked off with all age groups playing doubles against Charters Towers State High School. Next we came up against Blackheath and Thornbrough College. In the end we came away with a win in all age groups. Finally, coming up against Columba Catholic College, all age groups knew this was going to be our biggest challenge yet. However, we persevered and played some awesome tennis which allowed us to win in all age groups. Congratulations to all players on a such a great night of tennis.
The teams would like to thank Miss Pia Taylor, Mr Justin Power, Mr Mark Gibson and Mr Ian Dietrich. Without the effort of each of you, none of this would have gone ahead, so thank you!
A great lineup of 28 students of all ages attended our second Campdraft Clinic on 25 & 26 March. A heartfelt thanks to all the parents who helped in all areas to make sure that the clinic ran smoothly and the students got the most out of the opportunity. Thanks to Matt Stanger and Nakeia Stirling for passing on your skills to our students, and a special thanks to the Allingham Family for the donation and transport of the cattle.

As I write this small reflection, my wife Narelle and I have been in the community of ASSG School now for a couple of weeks. We would like to thank all staff and students for the welcome which we received. I think it very evident from my observations, that this first academic term has been a very busy term with a much ‘going on.’ Staff and students alike have not only had to deal with the academic routine and rigors of the school but have also participated in a lot of extra-curricular and service activities.
On Friday 24 March we held The Feast of the Annunciation, or Lady Day. This is an important day in both the life of the Church and our School. It observes the visitation of the Arch Angle Gabriel to Mary, announcing that she would conceive and bear a child, the Son of God - Jesus. We welcomed Bishop Keith to preside over the Chapel Service. We are also thankful for the attendance of Fr Kenneth. The service was led by our Girls’ School Captain Erin and her team of servers and banner bearers. After Communion they sung Blessed One by Aaron Thompson which speaks of the faithfulness and courage of Mary.
Following this we progressed to Lady Day Dinner at Halse Hall. The Hall was decorated beautifully, and we were treated to some lovely vocal entertainment and a speech by Special Guest, Past Student, Academic Prefect & School Vice Captain Miss Kate Blennerhassett.
Term 1 in HPE kicked off with our fortnightly visits to the Kennedy Regiment Memorial Pool for the Prep to Year 6 swimming lessons. We have enjoyed using the facilities each fortnight to work on stroke development and learning about water safety and water survival. We also celebrated HPE Week on Monday 20 to Friday 24 February. The celebrations saw students take part in skipping, yoga, dance, rock/ paper/scissors (a jumping through hoops challenge) and sun safety messages. Next term we look forward to beginning our athletics journey for 2023 so watch this space!
Thursday is the grooviest day in Junior School! Each Thursday students from Year 2 to Year 6 attend After School Dance sessions. After School we change into comfortable clothes and head to the Jim Rebgetz Centre. We love to stretch, dance, do mat work and sometimes tumble.
We’ve had a wonderful start to the year in Pre-prep. In Numeracy, we have been exploring size, weight and height by using language including large and small, heavy and light and tall and short. In Literacy, we have been listening very carefully to the syllables of the words to fine tune our listening. In History, we have been building home and school connections by sharing photographs of our families with our friends, whilst in Health, we have been thinking about germs and how they can make us sick. We have been building our fine-motor skills, strength and co-ordination with a variety of activities including manipulating playdough, threading, scrunching and gluing, colouring and drawing. We are building our gross-motor skills in Physical Education with Mrs Nicholls. We will expand our learning in Dance which we will continue to do with Miss Camryn from Power-Up and Ms Alanna for Music as a part of our Kindy Uplift Program in Term 2.
Oh, the places we have gone this term! We have learnt each sound in the alphabet, how to say it and write it. Students painted with water on the concrete, formed letters in shaving cream and drew on the whiteboards, all to support forming their letters in a fun and engaging way. To support hearing the sounds in words, we have played many different games. Mrs Fittock and I have been so impressed at the way the students have improved and worked hard at learning to form and pronounce each of the letters in the alphabet.
Welcome to the quiet and relaxing rainforest, where the Year 1 Explorers have been learning new routines. It has certainly been busy! We love our literacy groups and buddy reading. Each day we look forward to new and exciting maths lessons and games. As the term ends, we are finishing our units of work focused on habitats, lines and how we change and grow.
We are the Year 2 Buzzy Bees, learning is fun and always a breeze. Reading, writing and using numbers too, We LOVE our Art, and think Science is cool.
We’ve had a busy but productive term, School is great and we love to LEARN!
MISS PETA MILIAUSKAS
What a term we have had! From being biologist learning about living and non-living things, along with classifying birds that we have observed in the playground. To digging deep to find the visual artists within. Between the madness and fun, we also had NAPLAN, which led to many delicious Freddo Frogs and free play with our friends. We also had our chairs go on strike and we needed to persuade them to come back, luckily our persuasive skills were up to the task. I know that the Year 3 No Prob-Llamas will have many more learning adventures next term!
MRS JANE TURNER
MISS AMELIA RICHARDS
The Year 4 class have enjoyed a wonderful term of learning and showed some very creative thinking. Students wrote entertaining chapters for ‘The Twits’ by Roald Dahl and decorated them with artwork in a similar style to Quentin Blake. We took our learning outdoors for a study of erosion in Science, and some photography skills in Media Arts. The students have continued to build upon their mathematical skills and problem solving, playing some mathematics games along the way. True to our travelling theme, we stepped a long way back in time to learn about the lifestyle of first Nations Peoples and Sea Explorers during the Age of Exploration.
Time flies when you’re having fun and it’s certainly the case for Year 5 students this term. As a class we have been working hard to reinforce our multiplication and division fact knowledge. Students are eager to play a range of fun games to learn all of our times tables. Already, we have seen an improvement in developing faster recall of multiplication and division facts. The latest addition to the Year 5 timetable has been Buddy Reading with the Year 2 class each week. Buddy Reading has been a great opportunity to help the younger students practice stretching their words and apply sounding out strategies. It has also been wonderful to see the Year 5 students take such pride in their role of helping the Year 2 students.
It has been a busy and exciting start to Year 6. The highlights of Term 1 have been our leadership speeches and Installation Service of our Year 6 Leaders, our leadership excursion to Magnetic Island, and creating our Media Arts videos for ‘The Best Job in the World’.
The strength of our senior curriculum enables a significant number of our students to pursue a vocational pathway . The School has in place a wide range of opportunities for students to gain experience and qualifications whilst still at school. These opportunities range from Certificate courses, utilising the Dalrymple Trade Training Centre and other online RTO’s, a strong work experience program and School Based Apprenticeships. The School is able to tailor programs to suit the individual student to assist in obtaining the desired outcomes.
This term, a number of students have been able to undertake a range of work experience as part of our broad VET program.
We have some very happy customers on campus in our Rural and Maintenance teams after their old quad bikes have been upgraded to brand new Gator UTV’s!
Our boarders have had a great start to the year with some fantastic upgrades across all dormitories. With new seating & dining settings, as well as technology upgrades (Nintendo Switch), and new Ping Pong & Pool Tables in some dormitories.

We are in the final testing stages of our school based App. The app will allow parents to advise absences, access calendars, school timetables, newsletters and sign up to sports specific information. As the app is further developed, more options will become available to parents.
All Souls St Gabriels School has launched our SchoolTV platform. Because parenting doesn’t come with instructions, SchoolTV is a wellbeing resource that can support you in the challenges relating to modern-day parenting.
This award-winning resource helps build relationships, foster connections, enable understanding and break down barriers to navigate a pathway towards better mental health and wellbeing for young people. It can assist in starting conversations on topics that are sometimes awkward or difficult to tackle.
SchoolTV topics are conveniently arranged into a number of series. Topics feature interviews with leading youth wellbeing experts and researchers from around the world offering hours of relevant and practical information. Additionally, each topic includes a compilation of related resources from key organisations providing a comprehensive stream of content. Resources include informative fact sheets, articles, apps, books, podcasts, websites, and other videos - all related to a single topic, in one place for easy access!
The feedback from parents has been excellent, and we strongly encourage you to make use of the platform.
The School is proud to offer our staff the opportunity to take part in University of Queensland Partner Schools Program. It is an important part of our Strategic Plan to ensure that we are continually developing our teaching & learning framework.
The program aims to:
• bridge the gap between research and practice. It provides educators access to a deeper understanding of meaningful, relevant research;
• build strong professional networks and collaborations between researchers and educators;
• deepen teacher capability in critically evaluating, understanding and engaging with quality research and evidence relevant to their school context and needs;
• deepen teacher capability and efficacy in identifying, leading and evaluating evidence-informed practices in the classroom or broader school context.
We are excited to announce that we have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries to become a Agribusiness Gateway to Industry Schools Project (AGISP) School.
The AGISP, managed by the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF), and funded by the Department of Employment, Small Business and Training (DESBT), educates and encourages students to become part of tomorrow’s agriculture workforce.
The project aims to help young people make a successful transition from school into further education and/or employment in agriculture-related industries. The AGISP also encourages meaningful collaboration between schools, Vocational Education and Training (VET) providers, universities, and industry to promote and provide agribusiness career opportunities for young Queenslanders.
Our inclusion in this program will enhance the learning activities in new senior subjects in the agricultural and business areas, as well as add to the industry connection already forged through our very successful Rural Activities extra-curricular program.

See you all in TERM 2!
I would like to firstly introduce myself as the new President of the ASSG Past Student Association. My name is Bianca Mason and I am a past student, a proud Chad House member who went to ASSG for 9 years and graduated in 2008. I’m from a proud All Souls St Gabriels School family and my two sons now both attend ASSG in Junior School. I’m glad they will have the same opportunity to experience the many ASSG traditions as I did.
I took on this role because I feel that the past student body needs to attract some of the younger past students to come back and reminisce with their school mates and enjoy a great reunion weekend.
To kick start the year we had the Burry Weekend which was very successful and there was a good cross section of age groups.
The Committee has some great ideas for our Reunion Weekend this year and are hoping to get some of the younger age groups back to celebrate all things ASSG, so watch this space!
Our Headmaster Mr Lee, School and Vice Captain, Erin and Annabel, along with current teacher and past student Jane Dickson, attended the St Gabriel’s Old Girls Association luncheon in Brisbane. The Association presented our Captains with a very generous $300 donation to the Zonta Club. This event is always a highlight of the calendar. It was also great to catch up with past teacher, Mr Denis Riddle.
Our thanks to Jacki Clayton and Pat Pepper who keep this thriving link with the school going.
• The School’s Museum continues to attract visitors and considerable items of memorabilia: WW2 replica medals of Walls of Fame member Colin Scott, the School’s first recipient of a Duke of Edinburgh Silver award - Paul Thomas, early football guernseys from Jack Mann just to name just a few. We cannot display everything we get immediately, but try to do so on a rotation basis.
• The Museum Care Group has been joined by long-serving member of the teaching staff, Mac Horne – now retired. He has been very useful in providing missing names of many photos of his time from 1986 and is sorting through other archival material from his time.
• There are still many centenary books “A Remarkable Tribe” and centenary blazers available at much reduced prices as well as Past Student and School merchandise
• It is hoped the long awaited research book on the School’s War Dead Honour Roll will be published in the near future.
• Elna Kerswell’s donation to the museum will be much appreciated with the long process of cataloguing and/or digitizing our records – making wider access to our records. We receive quite a number of research requests from members of our school family.
