Pastor Chris Smith

Jesus defined himself as a servant and taught us that serving in his name is at the heart of what it means to follow him. The fifth of the five core values that guide Shepherd of the Valley reads this way: “Serve – We serve by reaching out and giving of our time, our talents, and our financial resources to demonstrate and spread God’s transforming love to one another and the world.” With that in mind, “SERVE” is the focus at SOTV for Lent 2010. Our goal is simple: We want to tell 4,000 Stories of Service. That’s a lot of stories —100 stories per day of the 40 days of Lent. How will we reach this goal? That’s where you come in. On this page and inside the newsletter you’ll find all kinds of information on our Lent focus. We call upon everyone at SOTV to serve and to tell your stories of serving. We’ll have online tools for reporting. We’ll have a SERVICE STATION in the Atrium for reporting, too. You’ll also be able to call in your story or just tell us in person. Remember, stories don’t have to be long – a few words are enough. At the service station we’ll even be shooting short videos of your stories to share with others. Be sure to read the rest of the information in this newsletter to get ready to serve and tell your stories.

Share your service story! See page 4 to learn more.

Welcomers Needed Why do visitors to a church choose to join that church? Research shows that visitors who are looking for a church home often choose to re-visit the church where a pastor or member spoke to them! Would you like to join us in creating a group of "Welcomers" whose job it is to simply reach out to talk to others in the Atrium between services? We will have weekly teams, on Sunday mornings, who are in the Atrium or Commons welcoming and chatting with newcomers/visitors before and after the 9:45 AM service. The commitment would be once a month for half an hour. Please consider joining this important hospitality team. Contact Lori in the church office.

Lent 2010: Worship, Pray, Study, SERVE Praying through Lent: Daily Devotions on Serving Daily Devotional readings and exercises will again be a feature of our Lent experience this year. Beginning on Thursday, February 18, there will be a scripture reference, a meditation and a prayer. These will be based on the weekly themes we are following in worship and on the Bible readings we are using for weekly worship on weekends and Wednesdays. One special feature is the Sunday devotional for each week. On Sundays you will be invited to:

Worship, prayer through daily devotions, and small group Bible study will also be part of SERVE.



Use the table grace printed in your devotional booklet or available online.



Discuss the faith questions for the day, and



During the coming week, participate in the serving idea listed on that Sunday.

Use your devotional to connect with the themes for each week and prepare for worship.

Worship Come to worship! Praise God, hear stories of service, and be encouraged. After worship learn new ways you can serve and tell your stories of service at the Service Station. (See schedule on next page.)

Prayer We’ll have daily devotionals to help grow your prayer life. They will be sent out each day for those who receive the newsletter by email (households who receive the newsletter by regular mail will receive all your devotionals together in one booklet). The devotionals are built around five themes of serving, which will also be our themes for each week of worship.

Dozens of SOTV members have been hard at work to prepare and lead small group Bible studies during Lent. Groups will meet weekly and will focus on the Bible readings used for Wednesday worship: Week 1: Philippians 2:1-11 Week 2: Esther 4:9-17

Bible Study

Week 3: 1 Corinthians 16:13-24

We are developing some wonderful small group Bible study. These short-term studies (just five weeks long) are a great and accessible way to get into the Bible. They will be led by trained facilitators and will be relaxed and fun. Our own members have written the weekly studies – thank you! Thanks to everyone for getting involved in SERVE. I’m looking forward to hearing your stories.

Studying the Bible in Small Groups during Lent: We Learn to Serve

Week 4: 1 Corinthians 12:1-11 Week 5: Ruth 1:15-18 A small group is a great way to get connected with others at SOTV and to have a fun and interesting experience studying the Bible. Small group facilitators have been trained and are waiting for you to join a group. Sign up today!

Coffee for Men on Wednesdays

All men's bible study groups gather to grow in God's word and to share in the fellowship of Christian friends. They are peer led and are open to men of all ages and places on the journey of faith. They gather together for contemporary worship, social outings and other informal meetings on a regular basis.

Couples & Marriage

Valentine’s Event: Comedy Night with Barnes & Miner Saturday, February 13

7:00-9:00 PM

Cost: $25 / couple

The evening will begin with dessert by candlelight, social time, and special music from 7:00-8:00 PM, followed by a performance with comedians Barnes & Miner. Wonderful desserts, fellowship with others, and lots of laughs will enhance your evening together. Based out of Los Angeles, the husband and wife comedy team of Amy Barnes and Jerry Miner make it easy to laugh about the little things as they successfully marry over 20 years of comedy experience on stage. Barnes & Miner are a throwback to the classic husband and wife comedy duos of the past. In the spirit of Burns/Allen and Stiller/Mehra, they take on everything from competitive parenting and in-laws to staying on a budget and not blowing your 401k. They have written for such familiar faces as Ellen DeGeneres, Jay Leno, Jack Black, Bonnie Hunt, Bill Cosby and Morgan Freeman. Together their credits include over 25 national television appearances (Comedy Central, MTV, VH1, Fox, NBC, ESPN, HBO, A&E, National Lampoon…), four extended run theater shows with multiple sold out performances, one marriage, and two children.

Is your timing off? Does your marriage lack spark? Attending a Marriage Encounter Weekend will make your marriage run like new. You’ll spend two nights in a comfortable hotel and enjoy five delicious meals from Friday at 7:00 PM to Sunday at 5:00 PM. Four presenting couples, including a Lutheran clergy couple, give a series of presentations followed by questions the couples discuss in the privacy of their hotel room. There is no counseling and no group sharing. No one tries to change who you are. It’s great for couples who already have a good marriage and want to enrich their relationship, but it also does wonders for those marriages that have lost their luster though years of child rearing and work obligations. The next Lutheran Marriage Encounter Weekends are:

Bible Studies Our Adult Bible Study Goal for 2009-2010

You might remember that we have set a goal of 16,000 adult Bible study hours for the 2009-2010 school year. Through the end of December, 2009, we have clocked 6,613 hours of community Bible study at SOTV. We want to be a Biblically literate congregation. Help us reach our goal. Come and join a Bible study! There are plenty of opportunities in the coming months.

Friday Morning Bible Study February 5 – March 19 Led by Pastor Mary Lund

9:30-11:30 AM Cost: Free

Our study time will focus on the book of Acts. We will learn about the danger, struggle, and triumph that marked the birth of the Christian church. There will be time for the sharing of prayer concerns and fellowship. Everyone is welcome.

Mark: God’s Will for Life Tuesdays, February 2, 9, & 16 Led by Pastor Duane Paetznick

7:00-8:30 PM Cost: Free

This three week class is a Bible study that digs into a portion of the Gospel of Mark, probably the first of the Gospels to be written. This class is an opportunity to wrestle a little more deeply with those texts.

The Exile Theme in the Bible Thursdays, February 4, 11, 18, 25 Led by Brian McNally

7:00-8:30 PM Cost: Free

The exile of the Hebrew people in the Old Testament is a major event in the Bible. But did you know that there is a theme of “exile” that runs throughout the Bible – including “exile” in the book of Genesis, the escape from Egypt of the Hebrew people, the exile of the northern kingdom to Assyria and the southern kingdom to Babylon. In addition, there is the exile or Diaspora of the Jewish people in the years following Jesus’ death and resurrection. Find our more about how this theme weaves its way throughout the Bible and how it can be connected to our own exiles from God.

Jesus Interprets His Own Passion: Comparing the Gospel Accounts Saturdays, March 20 & 27 Led by Tim Schaefer

8:30-11:30 AM Cost: $15

This class is back by popular demand. Tim Schaefer led it last year during Lent and people were so interested in his teaching that we decided to bring it back this year. Check out what each of the 4 Gospels has to day about the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus. Make this class a part of your own experience this Lent.

14

The Sermon on The Mount & the Sermon on the Plain Tuesdays, March 9 & 16 Led by Tom Tiedemann

7:00-8:30 PM Cost: Free

The focus of this short term class will be on Jesus’ sermon on the plain in the Gospel of Luke (particularly Luke 6:17-49). But in looking at Jesus’ sermon in Luke, we can’t help but look at the sermon on the mount in the Gospel of Matthew, too. Take a couple of weeks during Lent to be a part of a very quick but helpful Bible study.

Milk, Cookies, and the Word Sundays, February 21 & 28 6:00-7:00 PM Led by Pastor Randy Brandt and Children’s Ministry Staff. Cost: Freewill donation. A fun, lively hour of song, game, activities, prayer, blessing and milk & cookies, all centered in a Psalm from scripture. Specifically designed for parents and their K-5th grade children. Sign up for just one of the sessions or both. February 21: February 28:

Psalm 136 Psalm 139

Short Term Small Groups for Lent During Lent 2010, SOTV will be focusing on the theme of "Serve". As a part of the experience of Lent we are hoping that people will take time to become a part of a small group of 8-12 people for the season of Lent only. These small groups will be focusing on our Lenten theme and on the Bible texts we'll be hearing at Wednesday evening worship. If you are interested in either being a leader of a short term small group during Lent 2010 or if you interested in participating in a small group, please contact Pastor Duane at duane.paetznick@sotv.org.

Interested in Visiting the Holy Land? You are invited to come and explore the possibility with Pastor Duane at an information meeting on Tuesday, March 2 at 7:00 PM. It has been over 10 years since a group from SOTV has traveled to Israel (and Palestine,) and this meeting will determine if there is enough interest to sponsor a tour for March 2011. If you are interested but unable to attend the meeting, please express your interest to Pastor Duane Paetznick at duane.paetznick.sotv.org or 952-432-6351 so it can be taken into account for future planning. Lori Moline, co-owner of Crossing Borders in Bloomington, will lead this conversation about a possible travel program. Lori has 26 years experience arranging trips to the Holy Land and specializes in working with church groups. Attend this meeting and help determine if it could be "Next Year in Jerusalem."

Health & Wellness Integrating Faith and Health

This Wholeness Wheel reflects our call to care for our whole self.

Divine Eating includes our Bodies, Relationships and Spirits (adapted from Seasons for Wholeness by Ruth Dankanich Daumer)

By balancing the interconnected dimensions of well-being, we are able to live well with Christ and pass on our faith.

In Gen. 1:30 we read that God gave Adam and Eve every green plant for food. It is interesting that today, many health experts recommend that Americans move from an animal-based diet to a plant-based diet (you might call this a Garden of Eden Diet). This does not mean that we must become a vegetarian, but rather we are encouraged to reduce the amount of animal-based fat in our diets and increase the amount of food from plant-based sources.

The Wholeness Wheel illustrates that wellness is multidimensional-made up of the social, emotional, physical, financial, vocational and intellectual elements of well-being. Spiritual wellbeing is intertwined with each aspect of wellness. Take a few moments to pause and reflect on the following questions: Are you aware of the foods you put into your body? What physical activity do you find most enjoyable? When you get regular physical activity, do you feel a change in your sense of well-being? Are you interested in making changes in your eating and exercise habits?

In the Testament of Old, dietary laws gave God’s people specific guidelines for Divine Eating, which included avoiding eating animal fat, the blood, and avoiding unclean animals and substances. These laws are not a requirement for our faith walk today, but we may find them beneficial. Divine eating also includes our relationships. Many of us eat on the run. God’s word challenges us to share time, conversation and food with those we love, following the example of Jesus and His disciples. We are also encouraged to share our food with the poor. (Prov. 22:9). Divine also includes our spirits. We are encouraged to eat with a thankful heart with the recognition that all good things come from our loving Father’s hand (Jas.1:17).

Ready —Set— Go! The five stages of change (according to the Wellness Council of America)

To begin making a change in your physical well-being, set a goal that is SMART — specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time-specific. Health & Wellness Have patience with all things, but chiefly have patience with yourself. Do not lose courage in considering your own imperfections but instantly set about remedying them — every day begin the task anew. Saint Francis de Sales

In 2010, we will explore each of the six aspects of our spiritual well-being beginning with our Physical Well-being. When we care for our bodies and our surroundings, we become energized and equipped to nurture our relationships with our family, friends, congregations and community!

Stay in Step with the Lord

If we can be of assistance to you or your loved ones, please give us a call. We have many helpful health resources we can share with you! In the Healing Christ, your Parish Nurses.

Proverbs reminds us that, “…a prudent man gives thoughts to his steps.” (Pr. 14:15) There is ample scientific evidence to support that for most people, walking can be an excellent form of exercise! To begin enjoying health benefits, the average person needs to walk approximately 10,000 steps per day (about 5 miles). Find your pedometer or buy a new one and get stepping! There are a lot of ideas about when it is best to exercise. But most importantly, exercise when — and where — you will most enjoy it, which will make you more likely to remain faithful to your routine.

Exercise Checklist

  

If starting a new exercise program talk it over with your health care provider first. Use a pedometer to track your daily steps. Be sure you have good walking shoes and if walking at night wear reflective clothing.

Tell someone about your plan and ask them to help hold you accountable.

Keep at it…it will take several months for exercise to become a new habit.

Consider working prayer and meditation into your walking activity.

Keep a food diary and exercise journal. You can create your own or look for one on the Web! This is a good place to start: http://walking.about.com/cs/ measure/a/blhowtrack.htm

Invite your friends & neighbors

February Collection: Birthday Bag Supplies

to attend a pre-game “Soup-er Bowl” party at SOTV on the morning of the Super Bowl, February 7th. Shepherd of the Valley will host a community-wide fellowship event, during and between worship services, with a spirit of invitation and welcome to visitors. Members and visitors are encouraged to bring an item for the food shelf and/or drop a donation into the soup cauldrons carried by our youth that day, all of which will benefit the hungry in our area. Wear your favorite football team apparel and we’ll see which team collects the most food, “winning” our Soup-er Bowl! Enjoy hot dogs on outdoor grills, chips and root beer. There will be games for kids and adults alike, such as Football Toss. Pick up some football tickets located at the Welcome Center and in the entryways, to use as invitations for others!

Easter Dinners Beginning during the season of Lent, Shepherd of the Valley members will be able to sponsor an Easter dinner to be delivered during the week before Easter. There will also be volunteer opportunities to shop, pack and deliver dinners. Watch your weekly bulletins for specific information during Lent. Questions? Call Lisa Loher 651-683-9127.

We need YOU…to help feed our neighbors in need! We need six sets of hands and 6 desserts for one Thursday evening every other month of 2010. Sign up to volunteer once or a couple times, whatever works for your schedule. Every Thursday local churches rotate the responsibility to provide free evening dinners at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church to 30 – 60 of our neighbors in need; people from the same communities as the members of Shepherd of the Valley. This is a great service project for families with children, couples, singles or groups! The next volunteer opportunity is February 25th. Please contact: Judy Anderson at judy4151@gmail.com or 952-432-9653.

Military Support Group Dear Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church, On behalf of Chaplain Hodge and myself, we would like to thank you for your love, support, thoughts and prayers. It is so humbling to know that there are people who love us and care for us even when we are thousands of miles away. It is people like you who make it an honor to serve the people of the United States and to guard freedom and liberty.

A Community Action Council Food Shelf at SOTV! SOTV is partnering with Community Action Council in opening a food shelf that will be housed right here at our church. We are working hard in hopes that we can begin assisting families in February. In order for our food shelf to be a success, we will need regular food shelf donations from the congregation. Items in high demand include: canned fruits & vegetables, canned meats, soups, chili, peanut butter & jelly, macaroni & cheese, pasta & spaghetti sauce, rice, pancake mix, syrup, cereal, juice boxes, cereal/ granola bars. Keep the food coming….we are going to need it! Donations are being collected outside of the Great Hall.

Birthday Bag Outreach helps children in need by providing birthday party supplies which parents may not be able to afford. Donations needed include: paper plates, napkins, invitations, cups, party favors (these 5 items in packs of 8 when possible) and candles. We will not be collecting candy this year as many districts have changed their policies due to food allergies. Donations can be placed in the collection box in the narthex. Thanks!

We were able to distribute the items in the care package that you sent for the soldiers. They were so excited to be able to get stuff that families have sent over here from the states. “Thank you so much,” was repeated over and over again to us, but we know that they were truly thanking you. Some of the soldiers don’t have families that send them care packages and sometimes it gets them down. But when they see how lovingly families like y’all send these packages, it puts a smile on their face and warmth in their heart. Some people think that it’s just a simple thing to send a care package, but they are far wrong. It is a piece of home. Thank you again so very much. May you and your families be blessed for the giving of your time to help out the men and women who guard freedom. Thanks and God Bless. (26th BSB, 2nd BCT, 3rd ID – Chaplain’s Assistant)

Employer Matching Gift Programs Did you know that many employers have matching gift programs designed to support their employee’s interests in nonprofit organizations and community involvement? Through the efforts of many of its members, Shepherd of the Valley has been blessed in receiving such gifts. These contributions help support our many programs and may also be directed to non religious uses, as some programs stipulate. Check with your employer to see if you might be able to help support Shepherd of the Valley in a new way through an employee matching gift program.

Stock Gifts The gifting of appreciated stock or bonds to SOTV is a great way to help support the vital minisrties of your church, avoid taxation of your gift and receive a benefit on your tax return for your donation. The IRS allows the direct transfer of stock to the church and allows the donor to deduct the value of the stock on the day you give it to the church as a donation on your tax return. You do not have to report the gain in value of your stock as income . The church can sell the stock with no tax consequences. The process of transferring stock is very easy. Contact Beth Karlson at 952-432-6351 to get the information how to make this donation.

Email Delivery (preferred option): Go to the SOTV homepage (www.sotv.org) Click on the “Sign Me Up” link to receive the newsletter by email. No further action is required; OR Postal Delivery: Call 952-432-6351 (or email: infochange@sotv.org) to request to receive the paper newsletter by regular mail.

Pine Ridge THANK YOU for another year of your generous Christmas Giving for the people at Pine Ridge Reservation! Your contributions provided payment of electric bills for eight families, some of whom have had their electricity turned off, plus propane or wood to provide heat for the homes of six other families. The winter outerwear you contributed totaled approximately sixty jackets, coats and snow suits plus many caps, scarves and pairs of gloves and mittens. We have limited the clothing contributions, other than winter outerwear and children's clothing, due to the cost of sending it to Pine Ridge. Fortunately, we were able to locate a person who was driving out most of the way which saved on the shipping cost. The clothing was basically all new or in new condition. It is truly needed and will be welcomed by the people receiving it. Thank you very much, Bill Ireland and Lisa Loher
