Pastor Chris Smith

The blessed arrival of Easter reminds me of walking into a classroom of 7th grade confirmation students 20 years ago as we were preparing to spend time learning about the resurrection. In the first few moments as we sat together, I heard one student tell his friend that, after he died, he wanted to come back as an Olympic athlete. That student’s comment spurred others in the class to state their “next life” preferences. It was with some surprise, then, that I informed the class that reincarnation was not in the Bible. Reincarnation, which literally means "to be made flesh again," is the belief that the soul, after death of the body, comes back to earth in another body. Belief in reincarnation is wide-spread among present-day New Age religious movements, but it had its roots initially in the religious traditions of India. But it is not a Christian teaching. So, what do we believe? Next time you say the Apostles’ Creed in worship, pay attention to the words that comes right after the forgiveness of sins: “I believe in the resurrection of the body.” That is an astonishing statement. No other faith on earth makes that claim. But we do. In fact, the entire Christian faith hinges on that claim. We believe in the historical reality that Jesus bodily rose from the dead, and we believe that, through faith in Him, we will also (Reflecting on Easter continued on page 5)

There are many different and detailed aspects of the Christian faith; my office is full of books about them. But without the resurrection, those books would lose all of their credibility and purpose. Without the resurrection, as the Apostle Paul says, we would have no hope: “If there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ has not been raised; and if Christ has not been raised, then our proclamation has been in vain and your faith has been in vain.” The Apostle is right. The historical fact of the resurrection of Jesus from the dead is the beating heart of our faith, the one thing on which all else depends. And so he declares in the very next paragraph, “But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead!” So what is the evidence for the resurrection? Here are just a few things to consider: The New Testament is reliable history. When I was studying ancient literature as a graduate student, sometimes I read literature for which there was only a single ancient manuscript, and that was separated from the original author by more than a thousand years. There are more than 5,000 ancient manuscripts of the New Testament, many of them quite close to the time of the original author. The New Testament is a reliable historical document that declares Jesus rose. Jesus fulfilled hundreds of Old Testament prophecies, in one case 29 in a single day, most importantly prophecies about his own suffering, death, and resurrection. The fulfillment of prophecy says Jesus rose. Jesus appeared after his resurrection not just to a few, but to more than 500 people. A great cloud of witnesses proclaim that Jesus rose. The resurrected Jesus had a profound and enduring impact on his disciples after he rose. Beginning with a handful of uneducated men, Christianity spread over the known world over the next 300 years. It is the history of a peaceful revolution that has no parallel in the history of the world. Could any other event apart from the resurrection of Jesus account for that? The church was founded on the firm foundation of people transformed by the resurrected Jesus. I could offer more, but perhaps the most profound evidence for the resurrection is its enduring impact on people for two thousand years. People of every possible place and condition have testified to the fact that Christ is risen and billions of lives have been transformed by His life. Our experience is the greatest indicator: we know that Christ is raised because we have experienced his love, his forgiveness, his healing, and resurrected life in our own lives. Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! And, through faith, we shall rise with Him.

HIGH SCHOOL AND ADULT SMALL GROUP STUDY: 40 DAYS OF RECONCILIATION Sundays, April 11 & 18, 11:00 AM-1:00 PM in the Shepherd Room “There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” So it says in Paul’s letter to the Galatians…but what is the human experience? What does this promise that “you are all one” really mean? If you are interested in digging deeper into the issue of racism, its effect on our community (and ourselves), and how we might respond as followers of Christ, please join us for this series of conversations. Marriage: Questions You Always Wanted to Ask

Victoriously Frazzled will help any worn out, burned out, and stressed out woman understand the Spirit God has given her. The goal is to lead women into the presence of God—right in the midst of their “frazzledness.” By doing so, women will gradually pull back from confusion and doubt, from fear and self, and allow God’s Spirit to have His way in their lives. Individual study is approximately 20 minutes each day for five days per week.

No matter how long you have been married, a Lutheran Marriage Encounter weekend can improve communication and bring renewed closeness. It is a weekend of discovery…a lifetime of love. Upcoming spring weekends are:

What does it mean to be un-common? The uncommon woman is willing to walk away from petty conversations because she has better things to do with her time. She is willing to forgive those who offend her because she cherishes her oneness with God. She stands strong against the lies of the enemy and yet she humbly bows before her Lord. A weekly reading assignment will be followed by a small group discussion on Tuesday evenings.

Pastor Duane is looking for people who are single from Shepherd of the Valley. The reason? In order to brainstorm about the focus and shape of singles ministry in the future. If you are single, divorced, or widowed, come and have a voice in the direction of this ministry.

20s30s ETC We are young adults aged 20-30 something from various backgrounds (single, engaged, married, etc.) who share a common faith in Christ. We've noticed that people in this age group have the most questions about their Christian faith and God's plan for their lives, yet they often have the fewest possibilities for connection at church. We gather together for contemporary worship, social outings and other informal meetings on a regular basis. Volleyball and BBQ coming in June. Date TBD. Check the SOTV website for details.

Holy Land Trip in 2011 Shepherd of the Valley is taking a group to the Holy Land in March of 2011. If you are interested in finding out more about this pilgrimage, please check with Pastor Duane at duane.paetznick@sotv.org.

Health & Wellness

Integrating Faith and Health

This Wholeness Wheel reflects our call to care for our whole self. By balancing the interconnected dimensions of well-being, we are able to live well with Christ and pass on our faith. Spiritual well-being is intertwined with each aspect of wellness. At the center of the wheel, we are a new creation through the waters of baptism. Christ lives in us and through us and calls us out to love and serve one another. What does it mean to be a new creation? We have received the gift of grace through Christ, who came that we might have abundant life. It is when we are living well in Christ that we are best equipped to pass on our faith.

Social/Interpersonal Well-being In 2010, we are exploring each of the six aspects of our spiritual well-being. In the last issue we looked at our physical well-being — an area we already hear much about! Next we will consider the importance of our social well being and the impact on our health. As we care for our bodies and our surroundings, we become energized and equipped to nurture our relationships with our family, friends, congregations and community! We are all a part of a community, and individually we are part of the body of Christ. Our social well being is our ability to live well as individuals and it impacts our family, friends, congregation and community.

Social Needs

involve feelings of belonging —

friendship, family, intimacy. We all need to feel a sense of belonging and acceptance. This can come from larger social groups (clubs, office culture, faith community, professional organizations, sports teams) and/or in smaller, social connections with friends, family and loved ones. Where would we be without friends to support and encourage us? We all have the need to love and be loved by others. When someone does not feel this in their life they can become susceptible to loneliness, social anxiety and depression. We know that some illnesses are aggravated

16

by the lack of human relationships, loneliness or rejection. Health and well being is not merely the absence of disease. It is multidimensional! As parish nurses we consider health as "harmony of body, mind and spirit in relationship with God, self, others and the environment“. Consider the word “relationship” in this definition. Health is a dynamic unity between all aspects of our well-being, acknowledging the importance of relationship and belonging. How can you build on your relationships to improve your health and well-being? Do you make time to participate in social activities at work, school, church, or neighborhood? Do you make time for your friends? Do you belong to a support group?

Set a Goal Now take time to set a goal for yourself. Choose one that is SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time-specific). Example: I will connect with my friends on a monthly. I will measure this by tracking dinners on my calendar and by how much more I feel connected with my friends.

"Friends are friends forever, if the Lord is the Lord of them And a friend will not say never, cause the welcome will not end Though it's hard to let you go In the Father's hands I know That a lifetime's not too long... to live as friends."

Michael W Smith -

As Part of a Community When/where do you feel like you are part of a community? When did you last feel invited or welcomed into this community? When did you last demonstrate hospitality for another in this community? Community is important to our spiritual well-being and provides us with support and opportunities to reach out and serve others. As individuals

Parenting Class: The Five Love Languages of Teenagers Led by Pam Geddes and Julie Opheim Mondays, April 5 – May 10 7:00 – 8:30 PM

Cost: $10 for the workbook

They’ve got cell phones, Facebook, and instant messaging – so why is it so hard to communicate with some teens? Maybe it’s not just a question of knowing how or where to reach them; maybe it’s also important to understand how they communicate. Join us for a six-session study by Dr. Gary Chapman as we learn about the different ways that teens understand and show love – some prefer gifts, others physical affection, and still more respond to words of affirmation. These are some of the “five love languages” that Dr. Chapman explains in his video segments. This class will be a combination of video and small group discussion.

Fill the Ark Petting Zoo and Living Gift Market Note the later dates this spring! Saturday May 15 4:30-6:00 PM & Sunday, May 16 9:30 AM - 12:30 PM The Social Concerns Committee invites you to help “Fill the Ark” this spring, as we again raise money to support Heifer International. 2010 marks the 10th year our congregation will raise funds for this project. Donations provide farm animals that produce food and income for needy families around the world. There are two ways you can participate this year: Ark-shaped banks and the 28-day Giving Calendars will be distributed as children leave their GodZone classes in mid- April. Use the activities at home to help you understand how Heifer animals – from bees to water buffalo—bring the gift of hope to a community. Bring your filled ark back to church May 15th or 16th. Attend the Petting Zoo and Living Gift Market on Sunday morning, May 16th. You’ll get a close look at 40 farm animals, including chicks, ducks, lambs, goats, cows, ponies and more! And you’ll have an opportunity to “purchase” a Heifer animal or a share of an animal. Your symbolic purchase can be a gift in honor of someone you love. Questions? Introducing the SOTV Joggers & Runners Group “At age 36 my first run lasted 3 blocks before I turned around panting and walked home; now running is part of my weekly routine that nurtures both my body and soul.”

This group is looking for additional leadership. If you are interested in being part of the steering committee or learning more about what the commitment would involve, please call the hotline number.

Each Saturday morning a group of newbie joggers and experienced runners meet at the north entrance for scripture, prayer, and a group run. Everyone from students to retirees run a shorter and slower 25 minute loop together; then those wanting to go farther and faster head out on a second loop.

On May 23 there will be an adult forum where the video, "Stewards of the Earth", will be shown. It provides compelling reasons why we should be concerned about the moral and social justice implications of climate change and why we bear responsibility to care for those who will be the most impacted. It suggests actions each of us can take to reduce these impacts on future generations.

This is a great service project for families with children, couples, singles or groups! To volunteer please contact Judy Anderson at judy4151@gmail.com or 651-207-8407.

OUR DAILY BREAD Food Shelf We are up and running and going strong. Our congregation is strongly supporting the need and we give thanks. There are 51 volunteers who are giving their time and talents to serve the families in need. We are partners in this venture with 360 Communities (formerly known as Community Action Council). We are serving up to 20 families per week and shortly we expect that number to grow to 40 per week. There is a 25% increase in demand over last year. We are looking to other organizations that have food drives to donate their food to Our Daily Bread. The SOTV Our Daily Bread is open 12 month a year. We need a steady flow of food to meet the demand. With summer soon approaching, the need will be greater than ever. With schools out, children will need more meals at home. History tells us that food donations in summer go down, so we have a challenge to meet. TO DONATE: Bring your non-perishable donations in any day of the week. There are shelves outside of the Great Hall where you can leave food items. There are donation slips for tax purposes on the shelves as well. Commonly needed items include: hearty soups, chili, stews, crackers, granola bars, cookies, powdered milk, canned beef, poultry and tuna, canned fruits/vegetables, diapers/wipes, toilet paper and laundry soap. TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT TO UTILIZE THE FOOD SHELF: Call 360 Communities 24/7 at 952-985-5300 QUESTIONS: Call Lisa Hegerman at Shepherd of the Valley 952-985-7329. If you have questions about donating food, call the coordinator of supply Roy Naslund 952-432-3019.

SOTV Scholarships Change Lives in Tanzania Through our partnership with the people of Tungamalenga Parish, Tanzania, SOTV members have changed hundreds of lives through the gift of scholarships for secondary and university education. Here are just a few examples: Mfaume Kisakanike was being raised by his grandmother in 2002, attending high school, and knew that money for tuition was running out even though he had scored highest in his class on the national exam. He said, "I prayed to God, and if God wanted me to go back to my village and be a farmer, okay; but if God wanted me to continue at school, to show me the way." SOTV scholarships supported him through secondary school and university, and he recently was hired as a community developer in Mbeya. Tulimtwa Mlangwa was working in the Tungamalenga Clinic as an entry level nurse a few years ago. She attended a three year course and is now a nurse/midwife, providing prenatal care, assisting in the delivery of babies, and staffing the maternal/child health clinic in the village. Consolata Sanga attended a one year course in tourism and management, and now works as office manager of a travel agency. She earns enough to support two of her younger siblings through secondary school. John Mhekwa was the youngest son of elderly parents, and while still in high school became guardian of his brother's three children when the brother died of AIDS. John continued his education through university and was ordained as a Lutheran pastor in 2009. In his new congregation, he has initiated evangelism efforts, established a micro loan program, and oversees the construction of a dormitory for the local community secondary school. SOTV members will sponsor 125 secondary school students this year. Last year we also provided scholarships for 15 post secondary students, including some very bright and hard working men and women who are training to become nurses, doctors, pastors, and community development workers. Unfortunately, donations to the scholarship fund last fall will only cover the students currently enrolled in secondary school. Payment for university students will be due in August, and the number of post secondary scholarships we can provide will depend on your continued generosity and support. If you are able to provide additional support, please make checks payable to SOTV with "TZ scholarship" in the memo. Donations in any amount are gratefully accepted. Questions about scholarships? Contact Kirsten.Levorson@sotv.org or Joan Dornfeld.

SOTV Group Returns Energized from Gulf Coast Recovery Trip Several members of SOTV traveled to Orange, Texas to work with Fuller Center Disaster ReBuilders from March 1-5, 2010 to help rebuild both Orange and the neighboring community of Bridge City, after the devastation of Hurricane Ike. Ninety-nine percent of the homes in Bridge City were under 2-10 feet of water, and lost everything. Along with groups from all over the country, this SOTV group tied the one day record by working on 13 different houses at one time. They worked on everything from framing to finishing, and had fun in the process. By all reports, everyone involved was as exhausted as they were energized by the trip. SOTV youth are preparing to return to the area in June to continue in the recovery relief, and there are plans for others to return as well. Watch for information about future trips and consider joining SOTV as the aide in the recovery of the Gulf Coast.

Employer Matching Gift Programs Did you know that many employers have matching gift programs designed to support their employee’s interests in nonprofit organizations and community involvement? Through the efforts of many of its members, Shepherd of the Valley has been blessed in receiving such gifts. These contributions help support our many programs and may also be directed to non religious uses, as some programs stipulate. Check with your employer to see if you might be able to help support Shepherd of the Valley in a new way through an employee matching gift program.

Stock Gifts The gifting of appreciated stock or bonds to SOTV is a great way to help support the vital minisrties of your church, avoid taxation of your gift and receive a benefit on your tax return for your donation. The IRS allows the direct transfer of stock to the church and allows the donor to deduct the value of the stock on the day you give it to the church as a donation on your tax return. You do not have to report the gain in value of your stock as income . The church can sell the stock with no tax consequences. The process of transferring stock is very easy. Contact Beth Karlson at 952-432-6351 to get the information how to make this donation.
