Southampton City Art Gallery • SeaCity Museum • Tudor House & Garden

Welcome 2019 promises to be a year of excitement and celebration across our three venues. It is a significant year for Southampton City Art Gallery as we celebrate its 80th Birthday and host drawings by the master Leonardo da Vinci as part of a nationwide event to mark the 500th anniversary of the artists’ death. The City’s rich maritime, local history, archaeology and archive collections are brought to life in new exhibitions at SeaCity Museum and Tudor House and Garden. There is also a wide range of workshops, talks and special events for those who want to learn more about our exhibitions, develop a skill, find a new hobby or simply get more involved. We look forward to welcoming you to our Museums and Art Gallery soon.

Exhibitions January – April 2019 SOUTHAMPTON CITY ART GALLERY Leonardo da Vinci: A Life in Drawing 1 February – 6 May This year sees the five hundredth anniversary of the death of Leonardo da Vinci, one of the greatest artists and scientists the world has known. To mark this anniversary, Royal Collection Trust has collaborated with twelve museums and galleries to stage simultaneous exhibitions of Leonardo’s drawings across the United Kingdom, in an initiative designed to give the widest-ever UK audience the opportunity to see the work of this extraordinary artist. Leonardo was perhaps unique in the range of his achievements, and drawing lay at the heart of his creativity. He drew to prepare his artistic projects, to record the world around him, to pursue his scientific speculations, and to make visible the workings of his imagination. This display will feature twelve drawings which reflect the full range of Leonardo’s practice including anatomy, botany, engineering, and cartography. This exhibition will be accompanied by a series of special events including talks, tours and art workshops. Visit to see the full events program. Drawings from Southampton’s Collection 1 February – 6 May To complement the drawings loaned from the Royal Collection a space in the gallery will be given over to the presentation of works on paper and drawings from Southampton’s permanent collection. Exploring common themes found in the work of Leonardo da Vinci, this display will examine the roles drawing has in artists’ practice. Image credit: Dale Atkinson, Two Cats, Charcoal on paper

Exhibitions January – April 2019 Greg Gilbert 1 February – 6 May Following on from Greg Gilbert’s solo exhibition, Through Sand, in 2015 this display shows the evolution of the artists’ work from miniature, photorealistic biro studies drawn from photographs to equally intricate but surreal imaginings. In 2016 Gilbert was diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer which triggered this major shift in his practice. This exhibition will feature a body of work, Convalescence, which was created in a great outpouring both in hospital and at home. Although all of the images arrived very naturally, they put the artist back in touch with primary influences of interwar artist such as Stanley Spencer, Paul Nash and David Jones, who processed their traumatic experiences through surreal narratives. Also on display will be a selection of the artists’ poetry, a selection of which has been chosen by Carol Ann Duffy to be one of her Laureates’ Choice publications. These poems further explore his illness but in a less abstract way creating a full, sensory diary of his experience. To accompany this presentation of his own works Gilbert will be selecting several drawings from Southampton’s permanent collection, featuring artists who have informed and resonate with his own practice. Southampton City Art Gallery turns 80! 23 March – 14 September 2019 In 1911, Robert Chipperfield, a local pharmacist, Councillor and justice of the peace, laid the foundations for an art gallery in Southampton and on the 26th April 1939, his ‘fervent desire’ opened its doors. 80 years on, guided by an exceptional collecting policy stipulating guidance from the National Gallery and now Tate, the permanent collection is designated as having pre-eminent national significance. Gallery 80 is a display of pride and celebration: showcasing the highlights which formed the collection leading up to the opening night and for the first time since 1939, presents the paintings which featured in the original exhibition. Dazzle: Continuing the Art of Disruption 20 October 2018 – 9 March 2019 Dazzle camouflage is one of the most strikingly aesthetic tools of war ever employed. Beautiful, stunning, and, in practice, terrifying, it was a rare occurrence where art was the technology and war became the medium. Following on from Dazzle: Disguise and Disruption in War and Art at St Barbe Museum and Art Gallery, Lymington, this exhibition showcases those artists who have taken a dazzle aesthetic and divorced it from the theatre of war, bringing ideas and designs to a modern audience in cities and galleries. In Trust: Caring for Sculpture 20 October 2018 – 9 March 2019 This exhibition is the culmination of a three-year project, funded by The George Dannatt Trust, to conserve and improve the storage conditions of some modern and contemporary sculptures held within Southampton City Art Gallery’s permanent collection. Artists such as Tony Cragg, Richard Deacon and Ian Hamilton Finlay will be on display alongside the sculpture Max Wall by Nicholas Monro, which has not been shown in its entirety for several years. Exhibitions January – April 2019 PERSEUS GOES ON TOUR… 29 September 2018 – 9 March 2019 Southampton City Art Gallery is delighted to be lending six of its exquisite gouache studies of the Perseus series for the major retrospective of works by Edward Burne-Jones which is currently on display at Tate Britain. During this period the wood panelled walls of the Baring room will become home for two works by the contemporary textile artist Alice Kettle. Depicting scenes from Homer’s Odyssey these large scale canvases will hang alongside the remaining four Perseus series studies, providing a visual contrast in mythological storytelling. SEACITY MUSEUM Southampton Stories From 15 December 2018 This exhibition marks the start of the Southampton Treasures project which will showcase the City’s rich and diverse maritime, local history, archaeology and archive collections. Focusing on different aspects of the City’s history, the exhibition features topics such as the docks, liners, working life, sport and leisure, wartime, and the City as a Spa Town in the 1700s. Stories include the tale of William Wyatt Fisher, awarded the George Medal for his brave actions in Southampton Docks during the Second World War, life on board the great ocean liners, as well as the creation of the New Docks in the 1920s and 1930s. On display will be ship models, maritime ephemera, historical costume, artworks, photographs and much more. Image credit: Southampton High Street in 1874, Maritime & Local History Collection
