SOS Community Impact Spring 2026

New efforts help to sustain vital programs When our founding members established SOS 58 years ago, they recognized the need for a reliable source of funding for our programs. This led to the creation of SOS Thrift Shop, which has continued to be the primary source of funding for our programs and services. However, the pandemic taught us we cannot rely so heavily on our Thrift Shop, so since then, we have diversified our efforts and placed more emphasis on fundraising to ensure the continuity of our programs. This year, we are excited to host

our first golf tournament, SOS Fore Our Community, with proceeds supporting our essential and enriching programs for children, youth, and families. The funds raised will help ensure that our safe spaces remain open, our subsidized programs remain affordable, and families can access the support they need. Mark your golf calendars for Saturday, June 6; registration begins April 1. You’ll find more details in this Impact Report. We are also pleased to share some of the work that’s been keeping us busy as we continue to meet

needs and improve the lives of local residents with your support. Our volunteers, Thrift Shop supporters, and financial donors are all a vital part of our journey. Thank you for helping SOS build a stronger, more vibrant, and inclusive community.

SOS GradWear a perfect fit for local youth For 22 years, the SOS GradWear program has been supporting local students. The program ensures every graduating youth has access to formal wear that they feel confident in for graduation night. Graduating students and their dates can choose from a wide selection of new and gently used dresses, suits, shoes and accessories for just $10, making graduation events possible regardless of financial circumstances. This program also promotes sustainability by giving quality, lightly used formal attire a second life. GradWear was recently featured on the SOS-We Are Community podcast, where the SOS CommunicaSOS Community Services Centre 245 Hirst Ave. W., Parksville www.sosd69.com | 250.248.2093 sos@sosd69.com |

tions Team interviewed participant Jacob and volunteer Melody about the impact of the program. “I’ve had a really nice experience in the GradWear program,” shared Jacob. “There are a lot of options at a nice price for someone who can’t afford a full suit just for a one-day grad event.” Volunteer Melody said, “I think graduation from high school is the first step towards your life as an adult, and I feel that it’s something that needs to be celebrated. And regardless of anybody’s situation, they should have access to beautiful suits and clothes and not have to go seriously into debt just to have a dress or

a tux to wear to grad.” Jacob found a great suit through the program that Melody tailored to fit perfectly. He said, “It’s nice to know that people in our community can contribute like this, and it really inspires me as a person.”
