Dame Nellie Melba sang to raise funds for cemetery gates which rusted over time and were taken down and dumped at the tip where they were souvenired and used as a garden ornament.

Due to a lack of fresh water the settlement was short lived and subsequently moved to Hobart in Tasmania. A ferry good life Sorrento’s ferry service is a great way to hit the water and see the village from a different angle IT’S A clear, sunny morning when we meet down at the Sorrento Pier to board Searoad’s original Sorrento Ferry, “The Queenscliff”. Master Gus Rogers and his trusty sidekick, Skipper, meet us at the ferry entrance as all the cars are guided on board. Skipper, who was born at the Queenscliff ferry terminal, wears a little “security” coat the girls in the office made her, and is a real hit with the tourists, with Gus bringing her out on most crossings. As we board the 60 metre long, three storey high, 22 year old vessel, the way the crew direct the cars seems effortless, loading them all in 15 minutes between berths. “To load and unload up to 75 cars and 500 passengers in such a short time is an extraordinary effort. When it’s busy everyone gets in and helps,” says Gus, and you can tell straight away it’s a real team environment on the Sorrento Ferry. Up on the bridge, Skipper has her own seat next to Master Gus, and seems rather at home living a life at sea. Six foot, tattooed Gus explains that getting the ferry out of the Sorrento Pier is quite easy but we have to slow down within a few minutes as it’s low tide and only one metre between the floor of the ocean and the keel. As we start gaining pace again, past Lindsay’s beach and incredible Sorrento properties on the cliff face, two ships are coming up

“We do 12 crossings at this time of the year and 14 in the summer time, and now have three ferries.” For Gus, his day starts at 5am, up for brekkie with Skip and then on board by 6am, working seven day rosters. “I’m a bit of a boat nut actually, I love the water. Skip and I go out on the kayak on our days off and she even has a life jacket,” says Gus, who also owned a 40 foot yacht, and began his ocean career as a navy diver.

behind us. “We always give way to ships, so we have to slow down again,” explains Gus, pointing out the rig tender and brand new helicopter landing ship quickly catching up behind us. “The rig will be going out to Bass Strait, no doubt to one of the refineries, and the other is a brand new helicopter landing ship, HMAS Adelaide.” Over the equipment, we hear the pilots talking to the launch crew as Gus explains all vessels are in constant communication. After the two ships pass, we are on our way, and have only lost a small amount of time. “The average crossing from Sorrento to Queenscliff is 40 minutes, travelling at six knots most of the way,” says Gus, who started out as a Ferry Captain on this same Ferry 26 years ago.

“I was in the navy for many years before I started on the ferry, and then worked for the Harbour Trust as a diver. When the ferries came to Queenscliff I applied for a job and got it,” says Gus, an original ferry driver. Gus explains that they never have a chance to get bored because there’s always something happening. “If the weather is over 40 knots then it starts getting interesting and a little difficult to berth at Queenscliff, which is very open to a lot of wind,” says Gus. “We’ve bounced off the posts a couple of times but this ferry was built for the bay so it’s no problem.” And it’s not unusual to see dolphins swimming at the bow. Gus makes sure he slows down so the passengers can see them. “We try to make the passengers' experience as fun as possible and they love seeing the dolphins. This 2016 EDITION

spend the rest of my time surfing at the backbeach in Rye.”

They 've even picked up stray surfers and divers along the way.

On the bridge, Gus’s second in command, Steve Lock works his way around the room, checking equipment and keeping an eye out. Chief engineer, Peter Lumpreiksas sticks his head in and tells us to come and check out the engine room when we dock.

Back on deck, the team including Master Gus are all out there guiding the new group of cars and passengers onto the ferry. We meet Gus upstairs for another smooth exit from Queenscliff and head back home to Sorrento.

“We sometimes have to rescue surfers or jetski riders who are stranded and even rescued a couple of divers from Pope’s Eye one time, whose dive boat had left them behind,” says Gus with a laugh. Although a total professional now, Gus admits the first time he drove the ferry was a bit daunting. “In those days there was a lot of sand, so we had only a small area to manoeuvre the ferry. Sorrento is great, but Queenscliff can be a daunting place. It took me a few weeks to get used to the conditions there,” says Gus, who has clearly got it down pat now as we berth

A marine engineer all his life, Peter has worked on the ferries for two years, and makes sure the engines run smoothly. It’s a loud area down in the engine room, where ear muffs are an essential part of everyday working procedure. “It’s a great life working on the ferry,” says the man who previously had to travel away from home for work. “Now I can do my shifts and

Aladdin’s cave of treasures awaits AS YOU wander along the glamorous Sorrento shopping strip, you simply have to visit Marlene Miller Antiques, an Aladdin’s cave of unique and unexpected treasures.

“We sell a lot of gold rush jewellery, which was actually made during the gold rush, with intricate detail modern jewellers cannot imitate,” says Marlene. She has a large selection of mourning jewellery, beautiful and macabre pieces that were created to mourn the death of a loved one, which became popular in the 1800s.

Marlene has owned antique shops since 1985, after earning her living as a law clerk in Melbourne, and longing for a sea change. “We used to come here for holidays all the time and one year decided to restore an old building in the main street. We pretty much didn’t leave after that, ran art stores and soon antique shops,” says Marlene. As soon as you walk into the shop, there is so much to see, with two storeys of antiques and brica-brac, from crystal, coach lamps and fine china to fur coats, hats, dining furniture, photographs and frames. “Upstairs is a great range of antique books dating back to the

1700s. We even had a book from circa 1600. And our jewellery is stunning, with a selection from top Melbourne jewellers including Simon Kushnir, who is well known for his handmade rings and jewels of the finest quality, and very popular for engagement rings.” When you wander inside, you will be amazed at what you can learn, as Marlene takes you through the enchanting world of old wares.

having a link from the past to the future,” says Marlene, who has noticed more young people interested in antiques. “A lot of the young ones are interested in the old English china. The English aren’t making it anymore so it’s a lovely keepsake.” With a large variety of treasures in her store, sometimes it's hard to let go of some items. “You do become attached at

Mary Gregory is a name used for glass that is easily identified with white figures, usually of children playing, painted on clear or coloured glass as the decoration. The

Food Is Life Sicilian chef Carmel D'Amore's life in writing CARMELA D’Amore is a local celebrity, and one of Sorrento’s best cultural and culinary imports. Born in Kilmore to Sicilian immigrants, she’s a first generation Australian who came to the Mornington Peninsula in 1974 with her sizeable family. Not only does she lead the team at Sorrento Trattoria from the kitchen (which she shares with her son Joe), she volunteers at Sorrento Primary School and St. Joseph’s, where she assists with their annual Italian Day. As well, she runs a cooking school (Carmela’s Cucina Classes) on Tuesdays and Wednesdays in the kitchen and officially launched her cook book on the 6th of December from the restaurant. “It’s just under a kilo – it’s a beautiful, heavy book, if I do say so myself. It’s about my family’s journey as well as my own, and talks about some of the struggles we faced, how we overcame them and how I healed through Sicilian cooking.” It’s an intricate combination of biography, personal struggle and culinary studies, including 75 of her mother and nonna’s personal recipes that she’s modified to suit contemporary tastes and standards. If there were a way to put Sorrento Trattoria on paper, this is it. It’s worth a read if you enjoy your time in the kitchen, too – Carmela and her family literally live and breathe food. “I’ve been cooking for more than 40 years professionally as a Sicilian chef.” Her husband also happens to have the gene – his father was the first artisan baker in Clifton Hill, and he’s a French pastry chef.

Dolphins of Port Phillip Home of the Flipper family THE dolphins of Port Phillip are a unique type of bottlenose dolphin. Recognised as a separate species in 2011, the Burrunan dolphin or Tursiops australis is found only in Port Phillip and the Gippsland lakes. They are dark bluish-grey at the top near the dorsal fin, extending over the head and sides of the body. Along the midline is a lighter grey that extends as a blaze on the side near the dorsal fin. More than 100 Burrunan dolphins live in Port Phillip in relatively small family groups called pods and can cover vast distances looking for food. Dolphins have been recorded in history as far back as the ancient Minoan culture on the island of Crete. In Aboriginal culture, dolphins are often associated with the human spirit. Dolphins have been portrayed in popular culture as benevolent animals always ready to lend a hand or help people in distress.

In the 1973 film Day of the Dolphin, scientists Jake Terrell (George C Scott), and his wife Maggie (Trish Van Devere) train dolphins to communicate with humans. Two of the dolphins are stolen by officials of the shadowy Franklin Foundation headed by Harold DeMilo (Fritz Weaver), the backer of the Terrells’ research.

humans in trouble. The show convinced viewers that dolphins communicate with humans using clicks and whistles but this is actually echo-locating to find and stun fish.

After the kidnapping, an investigation by an undercover government agent, Curtis Mahoney (Paul Sorvino), reveals the institute is training dolphins to assassinate the President of the United States by attaching a limpet mine to the hull of a yacht he is on.

Dolphins are highly social, and are commonly seen in pods of about five to 20 inshore and in larger groups of 50 to 100 or more in the ocean. Mating and births occur during summer, with gestation taking 12 months. Calves are about one metre long at birth and are weaned at 18 months. Females live longer than males, to a maximum of about 50 and 40 years respectively.

In the 1984 film 2010: The Year We Made Contact – the sequel to 2001: A Space Odyssey – dolphins come and go as they please from the sea to Heywood Floyd’s connected saltwater indoor swimming pool.

Bottlenose dolphins eat fish, squid and crustaceans. They also follow fishing vessels to feed on discarded items and can be caught in nets. Dolphins are protected in Australia by state and federal laws.

The wreck of the Sierra Nevada The shipwreck with only five survivors THE entrance to Port Phillip is considered to hold some of the most treacherous waters in the world. The Rip, as it is known, has a large tidal flow through a relatively narrow channel from the bay to Bass Strait, and a high rocky seabed. The waters surrounding The Rip are synonymous with wild water and treacherous rocky outcrops that have claimed many ships since the 1830s when Melbourne was settled by Europeans. One such ship, the Sierra Nevada, was an iron ship of 1523 gross tons. Built at Southampton in 1877, it was 71 metres in length. It left Liver-

pool for Melbourne on 17 January and had been at sea for nearly four months as it approached the end of her voyage, Port Phillip. On 8 May 1900, the Sierra Nevada sighted Cape Otway, and signalled “All well.” Favoured by fair winds, she made a rapid run along the coast. As night fell the lights at Cape Schanck and Queenscliff glowed brightly and grew bigger. The crew worked cheerfully. They were within reasonable distance of rest. “Next morning,” they said, “we shall be inside.” As the night drew on, dark clouds gathered. The wind was blowing

from the southwest, increasing to hurricane force. The lookout cried “Breakers ahead,” and suddenly, the perilous position of the ship was apparent. “All hands were called on deck,” said seaman George McGuffie. “The wind was blowing a gale, and the sea was tremendous.” Huge, angry waves rushed onto the nearby coast. The threatening rocks grew blacker and the crew more fearful. Rain driven by the wind cut like whipcord, and spray deluged the vessel. “Let go the topsails,” roared the captain. The crew, holding hard for their lives, did so. The wind seized 2016 EDITION

heard the chief officer call out for someone to bring the sick man McCoy on deck. He had been ill for two months, and was unable to help himself.

Then Captain Scott decided to attempt to “‘bout ship.” This was accomplished, and the gallant vessel, as though scenting escape, dashed her nose into the mountainous and angry waves.

“Someone brought him up, and then we made for the lifeboat.”

“More breakers ahead,” yelled the lookout. In desperation the captain tried to put about, but the roaring waters gave back the sound of breakers everywhere.

Only 11 sailors made it to the lifeboat. The ropes were jammed, but they cut them away. Then the boat, suddenly released, dropped into the sea. A big wave swept over the lifeboat.

There was nothing for it but to try the anchors. “I heard the rattle of the anchor tackle, and I knew that the end was close,” said McGuffie, “as nothing could hold in such a spot.”

Only a few kilometres away lay the sleeping towns of Sorrento and Portsea, oblivious to the grim fight with death being made by the crew.

“In a moment the sailmaker and steward were washed out. Another wave washed all the others out, except McCoy, Freeman, Delahunt and myself,” McGuffie said.

They didn’t hold, and before the vessel even attempted to come around, a huge wave swept her from stem to stern.

The remaining seamen were hurled toward the shore at a terrific pace. They were among the breakers almost at once.

At three o’clock on 9 May 1900, in inky darkness and a roaring gale, Sierra Nevada was driven onto London Bridge Rock.

A wave shot them on the rocks, and with terrible desperation McGuffie clung to a jutting point, which cut and lacerated him.

“I shall never forget that crash as long as I live,” McGuffie said. “I rushed aft, and found the water was level with the deck.

Soon after he was joined by Delahunt and Freeman, and a little later McCoy crawled up, terribly bruised. He had been too ill for some time to carry out his duties, but the sea

had given him up while savagely devouring his stronger comrades. The only other survivor was a boy named Griffith, one of the apprentices, who swam ashore in a boiling, raging sea. It eventually tossed him, tired and almost unconscious, onto the beach. The darkness was impenetrable. Huddled together with the sound of the waves in their ears, and the angry roar of the surf, the men waited for the dawn. They drank whisky to revive themselves, and finally sleep came. When dawn broke Freeman clambered over the rocks, and climbed the sandy hills. From there he saw a rocky headland towering before him. To the right was the circular, arched rook of London Bridge Rock, in the centre of which lay the stern and bow of the vessel. From right to left of this was a curving sandy beach, strewn with spars, iron tanks, whisky casks, and wreckage of all description. Below but out of sight his mess mates lay huddled together, still asleep. The first knowledge of the disaster hit when Freeman arrived at the small telegraph office at Portsea, close by the quarantine station. The seaman – torn, battered, and dishevelled – told of the wreck.

live the life A search party was immediately formed. Constables Norwood and McDonald of Sorrento, and Senior Constable Spillane from the quarantine station hurried to the spot, with a view of rendering whatever aid they could in saving lives, recovering the bodies and preventing, as far as possible, pilfering of the cargo. Rescuers noted the vessel had been crushed and smashed like an eggshell, and the next morning saw angry waves roaring and clutching greedily at a small piece of the ship. “For miles along the beach, wreckage has been thrown up, and it all tends to show the awful suddenness and completeness of the disaster, which is the second shipwreck on the Victorian coast within a very short time,” wrote a reporter from The Argus. Twenty-three were dead. The body of Captain Scott, the master of the vessel, was discovered after it washed ashore. The five survivors were injured to differing degrees by the jagged rocks on to which the sea flung them. A reporter noted their condition at the nearby Point Nepean artillery barracks.

Let’s talk about ghosts WHEN Jenny Tomkin started Sorrento Ghost Tours four years ago, she didn’t really believe in ghosts. These days, things are a little different as the former teacher quickly discovered weird and inexplicable occurrences during the tours. An avid interest in history combined with the fact she had two teenage children was the catalyst for starting the ghost tour business. “I was looking for a job where I could work on a Saturday night to stay awake so I could pick up the kids from parties,” says Jenny, who had been on a ghost tour in Ballarat just weeks before. “I love history and started researching Sorrento. There were so many rich stories of the town that it was a natural progression to start ghost tours, and everything just fell into place.” With a solid knowledge of Sorrento’s past under her belt, Jenny then met business and shop owners to investigate any personal experience of ghosts.

“The feedback was incredible. Nearly every owner told me stories of their own or other people’s sightings, baffling noises and objects moving,” says Jenny, who described herself as having a healthy scepticism at first. “There have been so many wonderful as well as tragic stories in Sorrento and some of the spirits have not moved on. It took me a few months of hosting the tours to realise there was something paranormal there.” Mediums and psychics who have been on the tour all agree that there are four or five specific spirits that have not left the earth for some reason. Jenny explains that, over the years, they all talk of the same experience. “Marlene Miller Antiques has a female ghost who wears a blue dress and a blue hat. I have been told she doesn’t like me much. Marlene made the mezzanine floor there for her, surrounded by books with a comfortable rocking chair. She used to have the store next door and the ghost moved across

/sorrentovillage

/Sorrento_village

with her. Many times Marlene has gone upstairs and the big chess piece in the middle of the room has been moved.” This kind of experience is a regular occurrence these days, and often Jenny herself can sense a ghostly presence. “I don’t personally see them but the four or five ghosts always described are in Morgans Bar, which is the old morgue, Sorrento Park, and outside Three Palms Restaurant. “Three Palms is a particularly sad story as a little girl was abducted from the home many years ago and she will not leave now,” says Jenny, who says that most of the stories are not as tragic. “There is a little boy on the hill, Matthew, who comes out nearly every time and just wants to play. And at the old Continental Hotel, George Coppin, the Father of Sorrento, pops in occasionally and is quite the character. When I ask him questions he answers on the monitor and is always playful.”

live the life Spirits communicate in different ways and people receive messages differently, according to Jenny. “When I started setting up the tours, I invited five clairvoyants to come along as I wanted to see if they could sense anything, which is how I found out about the murders. One woman could see a hologram at the murder scene. They were all talking at once and each explained the same story. They were all shocked at how many ghosts there were.” To communicate with ghosts, Jenny uses an electromagnetic field monitor that picks up spirit activity. Tours begin at the town’s rotunda, where Jenny explains what will happen and gives guests a brief history of the town. “I start by asking people not to scream. My job is to calm people

down because the ghosts will run away if they scream,” says Jenny, who is still astounded at how it has transformed from a history tour with an edge into a ghost tour. “It’s not scary for me at all though. As I take people around Sorrento, I explain the different things they might see or feel. Some people feel a tickle on the arm or leg, others feel their garments being flicked; sometimes there’s a smell or noise. Cameras pick up a lot of activity, particularly orbs, which is an energy ball reflecting a spirit.” Jenny said she’d never seen a travelling orb until about five months ago. “A girl was pointing her camera behind her and watching as this white orb followed her. The ghosts don’t ever let me take photos of them so I asked if I could hold her

camera and see if I could do it. As soon as she passed it to me, it immediately drained of battery. When I gave it back to her it came on again,” she says. “Even the most sceptical of guests on that tour were taken aback.” On a Sorrento Ghost Tour you will visit about 12 historic locations, starting at the rotunda and walking through the town, down back alleys and past the cemetery, culminating at Watts Cottage, which dates back to 1869. Sorrento Ghost Tours is not just for mediums and clairvoyants. Anyone who has an interest in history and a penchant for the unexplained will love every scary moment. Claret & Co. Wine Bar James McPherson is passionate about three things great cuisine, wine and fabulous entertainment. THREE Palms Restaurant, located on the main street in Sorrento, was established by James McPherson seven years ago and has become a favourite for locals and holidaymakers, earning itself a number one rating on both Trip Advisor and Urban Spoon for the Mornington Peninsula. Three Palms has evolved into Claret & Co. for the summer theatre season. With the Spiegeltent reopening on December 8th for shows at 6.30 and 8.30pm from Tuesday to Sunday, the Claret & Co. wine bar is a way in which the venue can look after its customers more quickly and comfortably. Moving away from the wellknown Three Palms restaurant just for the summer, the tapas and wine bar allows theatre guests to enjoy a few drinks and light meals, before or after the show.

26

The layout and style of service means there’s more room for guests to mingle, chat and enjoy the atmosphere. There are tables available as well as relaxed seating and standing room. With a well-rounded wine and beer list as well as a cocktail menu, the Asian/South American-fusion style of food has moved from the shared dining that Three Palms is well-known for to a more tapas-style, which still provides enough food for two people to share without being a ‘knife and fork’ meal. The menu will also be available in the delightful garden area at the front of the restaurant, which is a great spot on a summer’s evening. Doing away with the traditional two-seat setup for dining, guests are welcome to stay as long as they like and enjoy all that Claret & Co. and the Spiegeltent have to offer.

Claret & Co. by Three Palms is very close to owner James McPherson’s heart and will continue to be a part of the Sorrento restaurant scene. “For the Spiegeltent season, it’s important that we can welcome everyone who attends the show and offer them the enjoyment of a few drinks and something delicious to eat in a warm and relaxed environment.” Claret & Co. @ Three Palms 154 Ocean Beach Road, Sorrento Ph: 03 5984 1057 www.threepalms.com.au www.facebook.com/3palmsbar info@threepalms.com.au Three Palms is open Wednesday to Sunday for dinner from 6pm, and Saturday and Sunday from midday for lunch. FOOD TRENDS

THE trends in food are seeing a return to where our food chain all began. Consumers want to know where their food has come from, how it’s been made and what has gone into the process of making it. Restaurants are championing small producers and artisan products that support this philosophy, which has been happening for quite some time, so much so that the big commercial operators have started re-branding themselves with a wholesome image. Food scandals around the world, such as the horse meat scandal in Europe and myriad of

false labeling sagas are driving a new conscientiousness amongst consumers who are demanding a fresher, more authentic approach to food. Sorrento food businesses are championing the fresh food revolution, with some outlets now selling take-home meals made fresh on-premises. Apart from obvious convenience, you know exactly where your ingredients are coming from. Stringers Stores have a large selection of these meals as well as a catering service, which is great when you just want to relax and enjoy your time in Sorrento without the hassle of preparing and cooking quality meals.

food Consumers are also a lot more adventurous with their wine, and that industry too is evolving. Many people are trying new and interesting varieties from all over the world, as local producers plant non-traditional grapes and importers bring in an amazing array of delicious wines from far flung corners of the globe. Mornington Peninsula wines and beers are gaining ground on traditional wine and brewing regions, a fact we’ve all known for years but consumers are only just discovering for themselves!

People are also moving away from the traditional idea of eating three big meals a day and three courses at dinner into a more casual way of eating - late breakfasts, smaller lunches, late afternoon drinks and snacks with smaller, simpler meals at night time. Most eateries in Sorrento cater to this need for all-day dining. The new entrant to Sorrento, Mr. Sticksenbones also offers take-home meals, as do Sorrento Meat Co, Ritchies and Scicluna’s

Mubble Gourmet Ice Creamery

Made on site WHEN sunshine hits the southern Peninsula late in the year, the sand disappears under a groundswell of feet, the parking lots fill up and the humble ice cream cone reigns supreme. Enter Mubble – Sorrento’s premier dispensary for any and all variety of yummy cold stuff! Owners Paul and Kristen know hospitality, having worked all over the world, from the Caribbean to Asia and back home in Australia, where they decided to ‘settle down’ in the bustling Peninsula village of Sorrento.

“We’d been down here for a few years looking for a small business, but nothing really grabbed us,” Kristen explains. Then a little ice creamery by the name of Glace Gelato and Juice came up for sale in 2011, and with a little creative renovation and innovative design, Mubble was born.

curious blend of marshmallow and bubblegum, “the kids’ favourite! Speaking of mashups, a range of chilled beverages from classic juices to smoothies to delectable milkshakes born of their fascinating ice cream flavours ensure something for the healthconscious as well as the thrill-seekers out there. But they’re not just local business owners; they’re top corporate citizens too. Says Kristen, “we use local small businesses and wholesalers whenever we can… we make all our ice cream on site.” It doesn’t end at the expedient, either. “Every year the local preps have a little graduation dinner which we donate to, as well as school fundraisers.” It’s not easy to “capture summer sunshine and serve it in a cone,” but at Mubble, Paul and Kristen make it happen.

Buckley's Chance TAKE a brief stroll down Ocean Beach Road and you’ll quickly realise there’s no shortage of restaurants, cafes and food outlets. A common thread reveals itself; decades of village history, a specialty cuisine, a focus on customer service. At first glance, Buckley’s Chance ticks these boxes. Head inside, though, and you’ll stumble into a whole new world, quietly but proudly distinct from its neighbours, with a wholly original culture and climate. Pam and Fred might be village veterans dating back to 1981, but where others have attempted to freeze time, they’ve rolled with the trends and ushered in an age of prosperity for Buckley’s Chance. Some might recoil at the thought of naming their establishment after

Pam instead realises “he was a survivor, living with Aboriginals for 32 years... when he returned to society he tried to help Aboriginal and white people reconcile.” His story was cut tragically short when run down by a Tasmanian tram, but the legend lives on, reinvented through art, ambiance and an attitude that’s not afraid to ‘buck’ with change. “It’s a good story!”

The pair even welcome the prospect of competition, seeing it not as a threat but an incentive, “because you’ve gotta lift your game!” In a shire that shies away from change, it’s more refreshing than iced tea on a sunbathed banana lounge. The result is nothing short of a holiday within your holiday, a choose-your-ownadventure in food and coffee. In a town where culinary culture is considered a rite of passage, Pam and Fred had the in-

Stringers

23 years & going strong WITH more than a century on the corner of the Point Nepean Rd and Ocean Beach Road, Stringers Stores are a part of Sorrento’s village identity, a part that Warwick, Helen and family are deeply proud of.

Now in their 23rd year as owners, the family have division of labour down to a fine art. “We have a kitchen above the store where we produce take-home

“We come from a food and wine background, we’ve run restaurants in the past and Warwick was a wine sales representative,” says Helen. They regularly offer tastings of gourmet wine and cheese and are locally famous for their take-home meals, a growing market in Sorrento. “The foodie influence is strong with us!” Helen and Warwick cut their teeth in Sorrento’s burgeoning restaurant scene, running the Smokehouse (called Knockers in those days) for 11 solid years. But as the village evolved, so did their family – with four kids to raise, they decided to change gears. “Restaurants are nights and weekends, so we thought we’d swap it for daytime work… we just love the old building and the history behind it.”

Owner Russel couldn’t be more pleased with his new spot. “It’s a fantastic position, the bay changes before my eyes every day. It’s the best office in the world.” He and his crew take great pride in their work, built upon “a great lunch… we like to think it’s the best you can get.” While mouth-watering Eggs Benedict, Salmon Steaks and a Wagyu Beef Burger that’ll bring on tears of joy are great throughout the day, Russel’s preparing for the move into dinners in December 2015. “The Smokehouse is closing, and they were a big operator so it’s unfortunate they won’t continue trading… but where one door closes, another one

But it’s not just the local grocery store, an outlet for fine wines and a busy café that make Stringers Stores special – it’s part of the cultural fabric of Sorrento. “We’ve seen a lot of comings and goings, our family’s grown up here. I still think there are enough family-owned businesses to maintain that uniqueness and charm we’ve always had, and we’ve accommodated newcomers as well.” If you’re only in town for a day or two and want a history lesson with your sitdown meal, Stringers is the place. They’re also “big prime movers” in the Taste of Sorrento, scheduled for 2nd-6th June 2016.

The summer menu will be finalised by December, and if previous seasons are any indication, it’ll be hard to resist. “Porterhouse steak’s now on our specials board, we’ve just run out of natural Pacific oysters, but we’ll bring them back over summer.” Dinner will be available on Fridays and Saturdays and is sure to be a hit with locals and tourists alike. Budget’s been considered too. “We try and cater for everybody’s price point… you can go from a $7 ham and cheese croissant right up to a $30 porterhouse, and even that’s less than what you’d pay elsewhere.” He’s incredibly proud of his staff behind the scenes too – chef Matt is “contemporary and progressive, very involved in his quality

Relax...unwind Sorrento is an idyllic getaway to relax and unwind, even if only for a few hours SORRENTO is an idyllic getaway destination to relax and unwind, even if only for a few hours, although a day, a weekend or even a week is much better for the mind and soul. The fresh sea air, no matter what time of year, clears the head and heals the soul, whether you’re walking on the rugged back beach, strolling along the picturesque foreshore, walking through the many national park trails close by, cycling, fishing, surfing, paddle boarding, swimming with dolphins or simply taking in the heritage-rich village shopping strip with some much needed retail therapy. Of course, if you would prefer to really unwind and relax, check out Marlo Spa or Hotel Sorrento Spa, with both offering various health & wellness treatments and catering to groups – a great choice for weddings, hens weekends or even those great girls’ weekends away just to recharge the batteries. Peninsula Hot Springs is just down the road if thermal springs are your thing. Yoga & Pilates are also on offer at LuLuLemon Athletica or Ocean Fitness, or you may want to opt for a new hairstyle at local hairdressers Chicago Hair, Three Seas

Most medical, nutritional, muscular or other needs can also be met within the village with a number of services housed in the Medical Centre, or by nutritionists at Sorrento Natural Therapies and Sorrento Physiotherapy. You can now even get your nails done at Ruby Nail & Spa. If you’re visiting for a wedding, a girls’ getaway, a couples retreat or even a family vacation, you won’t need to leave the village to have all your health and beauty needs fulfilled.

explains. It’s preferable to book ahead but if the need arises they can provide immediate help.

It’s a family business of 25 years, with a story dating back to 1989. Dr. Peter Meggyesy opened the doors of his quaint limestone cottage as a solo GP before teaming up with Dr. Adrian Murrie in 2003. The pair have now been the principal GPs in Sorrento together for the last 12 years.

The variety of services offered on site might explain this traffic. “It’s really grown over the last 15 years… we’ve got allied health services including physio, massage therapist, pathology, psychology… a neurologist, an infectious diseases consultant, podiatry and even HEARINGLife. Basically the centre caters for every aspect of your wellbeing.”

Backing up the doctors is a dedicated support team of receptionists and nurses. All are local and experienced with a wealth of knowledge about the clientele and local services. Here you’re not just another number, so expect the best in personal care. While the bulk of clients are local residents and “not infrequently, traders trying to chop off their fingers in cafés”, the holiday season sees a boom in tourist demand. “From Boxing Day through to Australia Day, 70-80% of our clients will be holiday makers,” Fiona

Our Facebook page will keep you abreast about what staff in the centre are doing – walks for cancer, flu season, breast cancer and men’s health awareness week.” Whatever your condition, you’ll receive a caring response at Sorrento Medical.

Thank goodness for that – they’re the only medics in town! “We can manage emergencies and do certain procedures… serious stuff we have to send up to hospital.” There’s an ambulance station down by the footy oval on Hotham Road if the need arises. The team prefer to focus on the cause, rather than just treating the symptoms. “Preventative health is something we try and encourage. Our services include immunisation, skin cancer checks, travel advice,

What's Hot: 2016 The hottest trends for the year ahead

Jackie Green, the Sorrento Stylist, gives us the low down on the top style tips for 2016.

SUMMER STYLE THIS summer, think elegant, playful and romantic, with some ‘boyish’ influences! ‘70s glam is making a comeback, with floral and snake prints and metallic accents completing the look. It's all about graphics on nails, think metallic, or ombré nails and rounded. Wide trouser legs or midi-skirts fill out the silhouette, with the fringe and tassel sandals ringing in the retro. Don’t forget the crocheted white lace for a more Victorian look. Other key looks include nautical, mixing patterns and textures, soft pastels, and raw edges. In shoes, go for gladiator sandals and glam sneakers.

WINTER WONDER Chunky heels, thick wedges and long boots bring about a stellar bohemian style for the colder months. The ‘70s influence is again strong, with high-shine materials and bold shades of yellow and navy showing up everywhere. Local and foreign indigenous cultures are a big deal – padded and quilted jackets with fuzzy furs and Eskimo hoods are both flashy and functional. Angora knits trump cashmere for a textured look and provide a stunning contrast when thrown over activewear.

DENIM ON DENIM Denim never goes out of style, but how you wear it can make all the difference. Overalls are back, looking rather stylish with a fitted or striped t-shirt. Sneakers and heels round out the look. A tailored jacket adds a touch of sophistication to looser-fitting “boyfriend jeans,” but as long as you’ve got some contrast in your shades, denim-on-denim works anywhere.

SHOWING SOME SKIN Off-shoulder tops provide a sultry yet stylish look, particularly with a hanging jumper. Cut-outs are everywhere, whether on the back or sides of a top, a

deep-V buttonless shirt or even sexy booties. Sleeveless vests and trenchcoats with fine modern details can add a long line to your silhouette, and go nicely with fine jewellery for that feminine touch. Cut-out lace with a flowing midi-skirt is light and airy – perfect for sunny days.

ALL-STAR ACCESSORIES Less is more with fine jewellery – even the celebrities are downsizing when it comes to bangles, earrings and the like. Rose gold is making a comeback, but subtle and seductive is the trend. Aviator sunnies keep that ‘70s feel alive. Crossover bags and leather clutches are in, with minimalist floral designs low on colour helping the rest of your outfit pop. Stripes and patterns that show off the shiny leather are a great match with the ‘70s theme. Jackie is a stylist, specialising in styling people, properties, products and photo-shoots. Marion & Me Local success story

WHEN Doug Scott set up his new ‘Marion & Me’ retail outlet on Ocean Beach Road, his mum Jenny couldn’t have anticipated the phenomenal growth her own boutique Sorrento label would experience. “I still do all the design and creating for Jenny Scott Sorrento in-house, but my son Doug ‘runs the shop’ now!” she exclaims.

Sorrento garments are a Peninsula privilege. Not for long, though – with Marion & Me opening their doors in Bendigo, Kyneton and now Ballarat, Doug is using his business acumen to give his mum’s label the exposure it richly deserves.

Highly ambitious with a keen eye for what made his mum’s brand such a success, Doug has big plans for the new ‘Marion & Me’ retail stores, named after Jenny’s mum and Doug’s grandmother. “I worked for Rivers as a designer, Quiksilver as a merchandise manager, Cotton On as a buyer and designer… but I got involved down here in early 2015.”

The sheer demand has surprised him, and he acknowledges that “the growth of the business has far outweighed any expectations I had… hopefully by the end of next year we’ll have 8 or 10 outlets!” He’ll have no problems if he sticks with the “somewhat archaic” but eminently appreciated business practices that have taken them this far.

Part of Doug’s motivation was to give Jenny Scott Sorrento more exposure, but ‘Marion & Me’ also offer international brands like 1946 and Moda Immagine, as well as top-notch Aussie labels Frockk, The Ark and Willow & Zac handbags. “Marion & Me Sorrento isn’t purely a retail space, it’s also a workplace… people can come in to watch and learn from mum’s work, cutting patterns, sewing samples, it’s all open!”

“Marion & Me is built around a true retail experience, starting with the product that we offer and finishing with a garment of high quality that will get the customer to buy into the brand, as opposed to just buying the brand.”

Custom-made garments like this are very rare indeed. With 60% of all textiles and clothing produced in developing nations like Bangladesh, Jenny Scott

FASHION, fashion….and more fashion. If you haven’t visited Sorrento in a while you’ll be blown away with what’s on offer. From the boutique to unique to big brands, it really is a cosmopolitan-style shopping strip situated right at the tip of the Mornington Peninsula. Shopping in Sorrento puts the joy and relaxation back into the experience, where you can meander versus rush. Get real advice from fashion experts, many of whom have been doing their own buying, both locally and overseas, for many years and talk to the owner of the store, who can get you the right size, colour or style delivered at a time that suits you. Sure, anyone can buy online and many do, but does getting a package in the mail deliver the same satisfaction and timeliness of purchasing from a real person in a retail store? Try before you buy, and get true customer service along with your purchase. Sorrento really is the style capital of the Peninsula.

Why travel to a big shopping mall when you can find over 30 fashion houses all in one shopping strip, selling designer overseas labels, original pieces, shoes, handbags and more for both the discerning and mature buyer, as well as those both young at heart and of mind. There’s a range of price points to suit most budgets, and now some of the bigger brands are joining those that have been in Sorrento for more than a decade. If you can’t find what you want amongst the 30-plus fashion stores, you can always get something custom made by Jenny Scott from the recently-renamed Marion & Me, who can sew to your needs on site at her new Ocean Beach Road storefront. Fit and quality are our priority 30 years ago, Jan Ingersole started selling swimwear off a tiny rack from her family’s fabric shop in Carlton. Today, they boast six retail outlets throughout Victoria, one of which is in the heart of Sorrento. While Jan’s kids Andrew, Kelly and Caz now run the business from the head office in Oakleigh, Phoebe will get you kitted out in the village, with gear from petite to plus sizes, cups ranging from A to H, maternity and mastectomy gear and a sizeable range of swimwear for blokes, as well as kids. Swimwear Galore’s philosophy is that everyBODY is different and everyBODY is beautiful, with a keen empathy for the customer and an environment that’s comfortable and safe. No matter what your look happens to be, Phoebe and co. will make sure you walk out feeling great.

Swimwear Galore

30 years is quite the milestone for an Aussie company, and the Sorrento outlet proves that big-brand doesn’t have to mean every store’s the same. It’s a little smaller than their stores in Mornington and beyond, and provides a wide range of styles that’ll leave you thinking you’re in a boutique. Would you believe they’ll ship internationally, and even offer the same hassle-free returns from their online shop that’s available over the counter? Because above all, it’s the service that counts. The staff in Sorrento are well trained and know how to offer guidance and support where it’s needed. Whatever your tastes, you know you’re buying gear that’ll maximise your self confidence and really help you hit your peak this summer.

Peninsula Ugg Boots Not just for winter! I LOVE my ugg boots! They’ve kept me company through countless days tapping away at the computer. Rod and Christine from Peninsula Ugg Boots tell me that ugg boots should come with a warning: ‘if you try these on, you may never want to take them off!’ They’re right. Peninsula Ugg Boots has been open since August 2013, but their all-Australian sheepskin suppliers have been in the industry since the ‘70s. Only the best one hundred per cent Australian wool products sourced from Geelong, Melbourne and Sydney are provided by local sheep skin specialists, including from Dynasty Australia, a beautiful Merino wool-lined leather and double faced sheepskin jackets.

Sheep skin products are a year-round item – naturally water resistant, cool air can flow through the material during summer, allowing anyone wearing or sitting on the fabric to stay cool. During the winter sheepskin acts as an insulator, keeping warm air close to the body in total comfort. The traditional chestnut ugg boot has always been popular, but you can now select from a new range of colours including black, red, raisin, pink, blue, sand or lilac, manufactured by Jumbo Ugg Boots and Pacific Ugg Boots. Peninsula Ugg Boots also stock a wide range of stylish and comfortable Koalabi Fashion Boots, suitable for any special occasion.

As an alternative for summer wear, you can also select from their fashionable range of sandals from EMU Australia, or an incredibly comfortable range of Ipanema sandals and thongs (flip-flops) to complement your summer outfits. The range of products doesn’t stop there. Kids’ boots, baby booties, slippers, scuffs, moccasins, jackets, gloves, car seat covers and rugs (in a variety of colours) all get a look in at great prices, and they now stock a range of Bolle and Serengeti sunglasses. Check out Peninsula Ugg Boots this winter – or summer, for that matter! Shop 3/3293 Point Nepean Rd 0490 087 803

WITH 9 different art spaces (not including all the interior stores) that exhibit and sell a plethora of local, national and international artists and sculptors collections, if there is such a thing as an arts hub on the Peninsula, Sorrento is it! Most of Sorrento’s Galleries have been servicing locals and visitors alike for many, many years, and will gladly offer advice to find you the perfect original piece for your home. beach inspired collections in a variety of materials. Local artist Justine MacNamara recently gifted her artworks to the Sorrento Portsea Chamber of Commerce by allowing some of her quirky local pieces to be reproduced on banners and displayed on light posts throughout Sorrento village. Gallery Vespa (Level 1, 26 Ocean Beach Rd) and Antipodes Bookshop Gallery (138 Ocean Beach Rd) are both strong supporters of local artists, often holding exhibitions to support a wide variety of art streams. Manyung Gallery (113a Ocean Beach Rd) is one of Victoria’s oldest contemporary art spaces. In addition to showcasing a large variety of paintings they also provide sculptural pieces to impress, and will gladly offer a free in-home trial and art consultation service. Of course, Marlene Miller (128 Ocean Beach Rd) has a large assortment of antique art if you’re looking for something a little more traditional or worldly, while the Continental Hotel (1-21 Ocean Beach Rd) holds 3 or more exhibitions a year in its restaurant gallery space downstairs, where the beautiful

limestone walls are filled with individual pieces submitted for their annual art prizes. Happy Days (155 Ocean Beach Rd) has a great collection of overseas seaside-inspired works and some fabulous outdoor pieces. The Sorrento Museum (827 Melbourne Rd) is always worth a visit for a step back in time to enjoy Sorrento’s rich history which is full of interesting stories, on both land and sea, as Victoria’s first European settlement site. Sorrento also has an eclectic selection of unique interior and homewares stores, like Sandarne Homewares, Coastal Living, BigChair Living, Elephant, Saltwater, Bed Bath n’ Table, with newcomers to the scene including Windswept Designs and Red Fox Runs Vintage & Home. If you can’t find something to match your style or inspire you then you won’t find it anywhere!

#artlovers At the centre of the Peninsula’s artistic pulse, the Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery is renowned for exhibiting outstanding Australian and international art and presenting a rich program of lectures, workshops, excursions and activities. Located in the heart of the region, MPRG embraces this history and presents national, international, traditional and contemporary art in all its forms. MPRG-curated exhibitions often explore the distinctive coastal environment and feature works by Australian artists with a connection to the Mornington Peninsula.

Anne Zahalka, The bathers 1989

Over summer the MPRG is very proud to present our latest and exclusively curated exhibition: On the Beach, from 11 December 2015 – 28 February 2016

On the Beach considers the place of the beach within Australian life by bringing together paintings and photographs by some of Australia’s acclaimed Modernists

with works by contemporary artists. The exhibition considers the ways in which people relate to the beach, its place in understandings of national identity and its history as a contested site. On the Beach features works by Arthur Boyd, Gordon Bennett, Daniel Boyd, Max Dupain, Tracey Moffatt, David Moore, Sidney Nolan, John Perceval, Scott Redford, Jeffrey Smart, Albert Tucker, Guan Wei and Anne Zahalka.

Antipodes ANTIPODES has been a Sorrento landmark for more than 15 years. An avid reader all her life, current owner Jane has just rebuilt the store after a devastating flood late in 2015. “We’d been closed for three weeks,” she explains. “Paper and water just don’t mix… but we’re back, we’re on track for a really busy summer, and our shelves are brimming again!” Sometimes, good things bloom from the ashes of disaster. But Antipodes isn’t just a bookstore, they’re a gallery and exhibition space too. “We try and support local artists as much as we can, but we do have interesting artists from all over Australia.” Indeed, some of those artists now have their work flying on flags and banners around the village, including Sabra Lazarus and Mio “Mick” Drag Jankovic. In fact, Antipodes is a crossroads for the Sorrento community. “We have

a relationship with the local primary school and St. Joey’s… last winter, we trialled a children’s space in the downstairs gallery, where we set up a reading area, showed films and provided arts and crafts. With the weather being ordinary, it was really successful, so we want to run more events that engage – particularly children, families and holidaymakers.” While Borders, Angus & Robertson and other bookstores have suffered heavily at the hands of the humble Kindle, Jane and the team at Antipodes carry on with aplomb. “We’re print only. When we bought this place, bookshops were all doom and gloom… but Antipodes had a really strong presence in Sorrento, with a loyal following and great possibilities”. It still does. Be inspired... Sorrento Portsea Artists Trail WALKING along the Artists Trail from Sorrento to Portsea, it’s easy to imagine how the seaside could bring a quiet inspiration to the artists whose replicated works sit proudly on display.

Funded by a grant from the Mornington Peninsula Shire, the trail was established in 2004 and continues to inspire artists and visitors alike with a proposal to add more art works in the future.

And what a way to display such works of art, in the very spot the artists stood to paint their masterpiece. With 14 reproductions along the trail, visitors can see the views as they were captured by artists such as Sir Arthur Streeton, John Perceval and Albert Tucker.

Begin your art tour in Sorrento, where you'll see Albert Tucker’s aptly named “Sorrento”, painted in 1942. Walk along the foreshore from the front beach and then venture up to Point King where Millionaires Walk provides a wonderful outlook over the cliff tops between Point King Road and Lentell Avenue.

The trail is accessed by car and then by foot, with views across the beaches and bay towards the Bellarine Peninsula on one side, and the rugged coastline of Bass Strait on the other. Artists like Emanuel Phillips Fox and John Perceval capture this wild side of our peninsula in their artworks displayed near St. Paul's Beach and Diamond Bay.

Enjoy an easy, scenic coastal walk along the southern most part of the Mornington Peninsula on a trail that is the brainchild of a group of Sorrento residents who were inspired by the Fauvism Art Trail in Collioure, France.

On this most intriguing stretch of the Artists Trail are two paintings - a 1920 Arthur Streeton called “Point King” and an Arthur Boyd, painted 36 years later. While aesthetically beautiful and home to the most sought-after ocean view real estate

Immerse yourself into yet another dimension of our great Mornington Peninsula with a tour along the Sorrento Portsea Artists Trail and get a rare insight into how our unique region has inspired some of the world's most notable artists.

on the peninsula, this cliff top location is historically significant. Here, the Union Jack was first used to claim possession of Australia.

IN 2004, the Mornington Peninsula Shire established Arts Nepean to encourage all forms of the arts at the southern end of the Mornington Peninsula. For many years the Peninsula has inspired the work of a number of famous artists, and one of the projects undertaken by Arts Nepean has been to establish the Sorrento - Portsea Artists Trail, which aims to bring the artists work to life by positioning images of the paintings as close as possible to the scene viewed by the artist. 1. Sorrento Travel & Cruise WITH more than a century of collective experience in the travel industry and global culture, Tanya and the team at Sorrento Travel & Cruise pack a serious knowledge-punch for a small agent. She’s second generation, too, with her folks starting the business as Angeren Travel in 1974. In fact, agent Liz has 44 years' experience all to herself, having watched the business grow and change hands. She’s been nominated as the resident "travel guru," and it’s quite obvious why. “We’re a professional, boutique agency. I myself have 44 years of experience, working in corporate accounts for 10 years, international aid for 10 years, living overseas for another 10 years, but it all involved the travel industry,” says Liz. The agency's resume only gets more impressive from there. Sonia takes pride in her knowledge of luxury spots and worldwide tours, perfect for family

trips. Kris spent most of her childhood on the move through Asia after leaving her home in Singapore, and focuses her efforts on leisure travel, while Natasha is an expert on our home patch of Australasia, with fantastic tips on Fiji, Bali and of course, Australia.

attractions All aboard SEEKING something a little different this summer, while still taking advantage of Sorrento’s second-tonone beach access? Chat to Catherine and Jack, instructors at Peninsula Stand Up Paddle on Sorrento foreshore and purveyors of everything SUP at Jack’s Boards in Rye. Lessons and skills training? Check. School groups? Check. Hens’ days, Christmas and Birthday parties? Double check. “You really can take SUP as far as you want,” Catherine explains. “Many people compete… distance paddling, surfing competitions, or just get out on the bay and have a leisurely cruise with friends, family or by yourself.”

Peninsula Stand Up Paddle Business partners Jeff and Lynda are currently residing overseas and have handed the reins to Jack and Catherine. “We’re in it for the fun and the love of paddle boarding,” she affirms, noting their support for charity events and “The Great Peninsula Paddle,” planned for Sunday 24th of January. A particular point of interest for Catherine is "Women on the Water Wednesdays," their latest regular event aimed at getting the ladies out on the bay. “It’s a social event, so you don’t need a lot of experience… we meet at the foreshore at 10.30am on Wednesdays – no kids, no stress, no lesson, just a paddle and a chat – and a coffee, if there’s time!” It’s a fantastic initiative given how many sporting and recreational events in the area catering for the blokes. Whether you’re aged 8 or 78, accredited and insured PSUP will sign you up. “Anyone can get on a board and make it move… but you can potentially hurt yourself, so we spend a bit of time on safety then focus on technique.”

Point Nepean National Park WITH its spectacular natural and built landscapes, Point Nepean National Park is a place that leaves an immediate impression on anyone who visits. It is truly one of Victoria’s beautiful natural landscapes. The park is located at the very tip of the Mornington Peninsula and has some of the most breathtaking panoramic views of Bass Strait, the Rip and Port Phillip Bay. Port Phillip Bay was the most heavily fortified port in the British Empire and was known as the "Gibraltar of the South". Visitors can see an example of this at the very point of the park where Fort Nepean is located. You'll find an extensive network of forts, gun emplacements and tunnels scattered throughout. Also at the park is the Quarantine Station, established in 1852. It offers a unique opportunity to see an infectious disease processing facility still in place.

Group sessions are growing fast, so if your usual corporate retreat is heavy on booze but lacking in soul, give Peninsula Stand Up Paddle a call. “We’ve had a big run of Hens’ groups & birthday parties lately, and Christmas bookings are still rolling in,” says Catherine. They operate on the bay for beginners and leisure seekers, and head to the back beaches for the more advanced. If Sorrento is literally blown out they’ll launch from Pt. Leo, Shoreham, Flinders or Dromana. Whatever your skill level, there’s a session that’ll suit.

Point Nepean has an extensive network of tracks to cycle or walk. One recently opened is the Range Area Walk, it takes visitors through an area of the park where the Officer Cadets, who occupied the site for three decades, trained. Features on this walk include a 400m firing range and Monash Break and Light with sweeping views of the park and the city of Melbourne. Visitors can also relax and enjoy a picnic at Point Nepean under the shade of a Moonah tree. What’s Hot for your home Pam from Saltwater gives her top trends for homewares in the coming year

• Casual Lux is the strongest influence, but there’s so many styles and looks to choose from… • Metallic - Copper, brass and gold give warmth, especially when used in lighting……but also looks fabulous in decorative objects or included on the dining table (as serveware) or the bathroom and kitchen (as tapware). • Raw elements like timber, marble and concrete always work. • Practical fabrics - Linen and velvet are both luxurious fabrics and mixed with something metallic creates a feeling of casual luxury.

• Gorgeous cushions are an easy way to give a fresh look without too much expense. • Indigo is shaping up as the strong colour with pastels and floral patterns making a comeback. • Linen is a strong trend, especially in bedding, but always a favourite in sofas and cushions.

• Organic and hand-made is always preferable to the mass-produced and really personalises your home, adding warmth and style. • Decorating your home is about what works for you, and having a space that reflects you and your family.

• Add texture to give some depth with knitted and knotted throws.

• Coastal life - trends for a coastal lifestyle, whether a permanent home or beach house, are generally a more relaxed version of global trends.

• Scandi Style is still big, with clean lines and neutral colours.

• Aussies tend to add their own unique spin to homewares trends.

• Start with a blank canvas – white provides contrast for almost any colour you bring in.

• Personally, I don’t follow trends too closely… you need room to mix it up!

Peninsula Pool Boys EVEN though we’ve got nearly 200 kilometres of Victoria’s most pristine coastline, we still love a swim closer to home. Mark and the team at Peninsula Pool Boys are here to make sure your water’s clean, the pumps are firing on all cylinders and maintenance is taken care of. Those lucky enough to have their own swimming pool are all too familiar with the serious effort required to keep such an asset up to scratch. “Thank God you guys are here!” is a phrase Mark hears often. Though you might be familiar with the odd pool shop or owner-operator cleaning pools on the weekend, Mark’s operation is all-encompassing. Apart from servicing the wider south-eastern Melbourne suburbs both commercial and domestic, Peninsula Pool Boys have a retail shop on the

corner of Ocean Beach and Point Nepean roads. You can’t miss it as you pull into town. Peninsula Pool Boys are still relatively young, having serviced their first pool back in June 2013, but their phenomenal growth has come as a bit of a shock to Mark. “We’re doing 600 pools a month now… to be honest, we’re bursting at the seams,” he acknowledges. “With our level of service coupled with more than competitive rates, we’ve found ourselves well and truly the number-one supplier on the Peninsula.” There’s no sign of things slowing down in the future, either. With former Richmond AFL star Matthew Richardson as the face of his brand, Mark’s preparing for even bigger growth over the next couple of years. “He’s not only a client, he's also the ambassador for the business.” But it’s the quality of the service, combined with the one-stop retail shop

for those who prefer to D-I-Y or like to accessorise, that keeps clients coming back again and again. “People either come to get their water test kits and look after their pool or spa themselves, or we’ve got techs running around every day looking after a huge number of pools.” Whether you’re short on time and need some quality help or you’re searching for an economical maintenance option for the hot tub, Mark’s got an option that’ll work for you.

Noel brought his wholesale experience to Sorrento’s retail district eight years ago. “I found a shop I liked in Sorrento, jumped the fence and loved it. Been doing it ever since!” “We’re a tiny store because we don’t do licensed products, we don’t do things aligned with movies and releases, and we’re not chasing trends. Our philosophy is very little plastic, no batteries and no licensed products… our toys stand the tests of time.” The same can’t be said for the modern-day toy chain, where Disney-licensed products, cheap plastic and electronic gadgets feature almost exclusively.

It’s very hard for a bucket of blocks to not do what they’re designed to do,” says Noel, in a humble but comedic simplification. “I do have amazing staff that treat the business like it’s their own, which is wonderful.”

Koonya Apartments

Experience a treasured piece of history in Sorrento village BUILT as the Mornington Hotel in 1876, the ‘KOONYA’ site has had a mixed history. The original building survives today as the corner piece of the Koonya Apartments accommodation and entertainment precinct at 3374 Point Nepean Rd. It began as a humble, solid limestone building on the foreshore to accommodate visitors. The Mornington Hotel (later the Koonya Hotel) was constructed for John Boswell Clark and remained in the family until 1952. The Clark family ran the hotel and lived next door. It gained a verandah and balcony in 1913, as the site was redeveloped through the decades. Nestled on the hillside between the foreshore and shops, Koonya is in the perfect location for your Sorrento getaway! A boutique selection of the 35 apartments are offered for holiday rental through an owners co-operative, established after the first residents moved into their luxury apartments. Guests take comfort in knowing they can deal directly with an owner.

Bridal couples getting married nearby, while family holidays and girls' weekend getaways often call Koonya home. Myriad shops, restaurants, wedding venues and day spas in the Sorrento Village are all a stones throw from Koonya. Golfing groups from interstate and overseas enjoy the relaxed atmosphere amongst the limestone buildings. The history of Koonya and the Sorrento Village can be enjoyed with photographs displayed in various apartments.
