e ďŹ rst drive One of the annual spring cattle drives took place early Wednesday morning while most folks were still asleep. Word usually travels quickly that the cattle are being moved through town, but because the Internet and phone lines were down Tuesday night and into mid-morning on Wednesday, they were able to sneak through town kinda quietly, despite a few delays due to cattle stopping to chow down on some pretty green grass. This year’s drive featured a pair of Carbondale police patrol cars that blocked trafďŹ c at the Highway 133/Main Street roundabout, which helped to steer the 300-head herd from Colorado Avenue, across Highway 133, then behind 7/Eleven before reaching west Main Street. For 5-year-old Emmit Nieslanik (left) this was a special day. Although he had been to cattle drives since he was born, he rode in a car. His mom and dad, Ted and Tammy, always worked the cattle drives. Tammy told The Sopris Sun he wanted to ride through town on his horse this year. So, once the cattle were driven past Highway 133 and were starting to head west on Main Street toward Colorado Rocky Mountain School, Tammy met grandma Celia, Emmit and his pony Wafes near Ace Hardware. In short order, they unloaded Wafes from his trailer, Emmit mounted and joined Tammy for a stretch of the drive, which concluded when the herd was put out on a holding pasture before heading to BLM land west of town.
