CancerFree KIDS
Who We Are: CancerFree KIDS is passionately dedicated to fighting pediatric cancer, the #1 cause of death by disease in children. We know that research is the only path to eradicating cancer as a life-threatening disease in children, but before promising new research has the potential to succeed, it must have the resources to begin. We invest in novel, high risk/high reward research that might otherwise go unfunded. We do this through the generosity of our supporters who understand that investing in pediatric cancer research is a smart investment in the future, not only for our kids, but for all of us.
What We Do: At CancerFree KIDS, we do ONE thing. We invest in cutting-edge pediatric cancer research. We partner with two of the top pediatric cancer hospitals in the country, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital (#3) and Nationwide Children’s Hospital (#8), to identify and invest in high risk/high reward research projects with the highest potential to move the pediatric cancer field forward. Our proven approach is unlike any other pediatric cancer research organization in the region, launching some of the most innovative research projects in the field.
Why We’re Important: Despite pediatric cancer being the #1 cause of death by disease in children, research is desperately underfunded, receiving less than 4% of the National Cancer Institute’s annual budget. Since 2002, we have invested $6 million into 154 innovative pediatric cancer research projects. Our results speak for themselves: • $70 million generated in subsequent funding – over 1000% return on investment • 261 scientific publications • 11 patents and 16 clinical trials • 3 start-up companies that began with
CancerFree KIDS-funded research projects How We Serve the Community: The impact of CancerFree KIDS goes far beyond the direct investment into research that fuels innovation in the field and our local economy. Our funding allows early researchers to develop their careers by building capacity and expertise at our partner hospitals, bringing value to both the field and the institutions. In addition, we engage over 1,600 high school students annually in our Night for the Fight student-led event, nurturing our region’s future philanthropists. Finally, we strive to create meaningful experiences of celebration and honor for children who have battled cancer and their families in everything we do.
