Who We Are: The Taft Museum of Art is a living landmark tucked away in downtown Cincinnati, where art and history live on the walls—and in the walls. Built around 1820 as a private home for several of Cincinnati's most prominent citizens, the Taft is now one of the finest small art museums in America and holds National Historic Landmark status for its historic house and Duncanson murals.

What We Do: Our historic house holds an extensive collection of European and American masterworks, 17th-19th century watches, Chinese porcelains, and French Renaissance enamels. The collection features iconic artists including Rembrandt, Hals, Goya, Gainsborough, Reynolds, Turner, Ingres, Whistler, and Sargent as well as 19th-century American furniture and the most significant pre–Civil War domestic murals in the United States. Guests can also enjoy special exhibitions, the historic outdoor garden, our Museum Shop and Lindner Family Café, and programming for all ages. It is all under one roof, culminating in a one-of-a-kind, multi-sensory experience that puts you at the center of art and history.

Why We’re Important: The Taft is a bastion for the arts, a champion for the arts, and not just for the people of Cincinnati, but for people nearly everywhere. In 2019, more than 69,000 people came through our doors, hailing from 28 states and 53 countries. It has touched the lives of both young and old, right here in Cincinnati and across the globe. In 2020, we celebrated the 200th birthday of this historic and much-loved house, a place for everyone—a place you want to go for inspiration, fun, and to create memories with a friends and family.

How We Serve the Community: In addition to the experiences at the museum, our community outreach efforts expand our impact to schools, community centers, childcare centers, and libraries across the region. Our award-winning educational programs reached over 3,000 individuals in 2020. As the COVID-19 crisis emerged, the Taft’s programming evolved online and reached over 62,000 individuals virtually as well. In addition, our annual Duncanson Artist-in-Residence program recognizes the achievements of contemporary Black artists working in a variety of disciplines. The artist works in the community through public programs, workshops, and visits schools across Greater Cincinnati with past artists including Nikki Giovanni, Thom Shaw, and Vanessa German.

How You Can Help: The Taft has been awarded the competitive Infrastructure and Capacity Building Challenge Grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities in the maximum amount of $750,000. However, to receive the grant—the Taft must raise $3 million from new public funds to secure the 4:1 match. Funds raised will directly support the Taft's Love This House Campaign, a fundraising initiative seeking to raise $10.7MM to support the Taft's Bicentennial Infrastructure Project, critically needed to preserve and reconstruct the museum's 200-year-old historic house—the Taft's largest work of art and prized National Historic Landmark.
