DIAMOND CELLAR @ OUTPOST ARMORY

The Diamond Cellar and The Outpost Armory teamed up for an evening on the firing range and to view the jewelry of Stephen Webster. Held at The Outpost Armory’s newly opened indoor shooting range, participants experienced the world-class indoor range facility with its instructors. After the range was closed, the party moved on to food, drinks and conversation with music by honky-tonk hero Phil Valdez. The night also had a serious mission to benefit Folds of Honor. Auction items raised money for this organization that provides scholarship opportunities to families of fallen and disabled service members. November 4

From the Publisher Since Valentine’s Day falls in February, and this is the January/February issue, I thought now would be an appropriate time to share with our readers how Melissa, my wife and Co-Owner and Editor-inChief of this magazine, found each other. Melissa and my paths could have crossed so many times before we actually met. Melissa studied at Vanderbilt from 1983 to 1987 to get her B.A. in Art History, while I was at the Owen Graduate School of Management at Vandy from 1984 to 1986, getting my M.B.A. in Finance. We probably passed each other several times (Jonesy’s for sure, the college dive bar across from the stadium behind Wendy’s). Melissa and I lived three doors down from each other on East 90th Street in New York for two years. Melissa then moved five blocks from there to Madison and East 92nd two months before we were introduced. We were even at many of the same memorable events before we met (the Squeeze concert at Vanderbilt’s Memorial Gym in 1985, the Rolling Stones concert at Shea Stadium in 1989, to name a couple). Our introduction was concocted by two members of the Centennial Club, Lenora Johnson, and my mother, Dotty. Lenora’s twin daughters, Colleen and Heather, were Melissa’s suitemates at Vanderbilt. Melissa had recently broken up with a boyfriend, and I had recently broken up with a girlfriend as well. So, Mom and Lenora both thought it would be good to have us meet. Now typically, blind dates arranged by my mother were not my cup of tea and usually did not work out well, to say the least. Hence, I was hesitant to agree to the meeting, but my arm was twisted—a lot! Ergo, I agreed to meet this girl named Melissa McGrath. So, I called Melissa, and we agreed to meet for a drink at Luke’s Bar and Grill on the corner of East 79th Street and 3rd Avenue. When I arrived, Melissa was with three of her friends visiting her from out of town, one of which was Colleen. Melissa came with backup! During our conversation, I opened my briefcase where Melissa saw I had a bottle of Mylanta. Melissa says “stressful job, huh?” I was an investment banker back then, and yes, it was very stressful. Melissa invited me to join them later in the evening after their dinner, which I very much wanted to do, but I had already made plans with friends. We agreed after our respective dinners to meet at a nightclub on West 57th called Le Bar Bat. Melissa and her friends stepped into their limo provided by one of her girlfriends’ husbands, where Melissa told her friends that she thought that she was going to marry me. Her friends immediately told her that she had probably blown her chance by calling me out on the antacids. After my dinner, my buddies and I went to Le Bar Bat, which was a dark labyrinth of at least eight different rooms on four or five floors, and combed the club for Melissa and her posse but to no avail. A few days later, I gave Melissa a call to ask her out on a proper date where she turned me down because she was going to Florida with some of her friends, including some from the group as mentioned above from college. A couple of weeks later, I mustered up the courage to ask her out again, and thank God she said yes. Our first date was January 4th, 1992. Fast forward 18 months to July 16th, 1993, I proposed to Melissa while staying at my parent’s house for Marty and Beth Poe’s wedding. I figured I had her where she couldn’t get away. Fast forward again nine months later, we were married in Greenwich, CT, on March 5th, 1994. God has a perfect plan, and for me, that has been a rich life with Melissa. So, Melissa, the love of my life and now business partner, thank you for everything over these wonderful 30 years since that first drink at Luke’s Bar and Grill that might never have happened.

Tucked away in Brentwood and designed by Pam Mason, is golf ’s newest luxury experience for exclusive social and family entertainment. Welcome to The Golf Sanctuary, a unique getaway for next-level dining, social memberships, and your very own private golf retreat. Because who doesn’t want to sneak off to Pebble Beach or Spyglass (via TrackMan technology) for a quick nine holes before heading to the office or when it’s pouring rain or snowing?

Recently, I had the pleasure of meeting Michael Shinn, Chief Operating Officer for The Golf Sanctuary, to gain an in-depth look at what membership and guest privileges offer its esteemed patrons who want to acquire a more intimate connection to the culture of golf and family entertainment. According to Michael, “the importance of growing the game is an absolute; we are dedicated to total inclusivity for the entire family.” slmag.net

The Golf Sanctuary provides more than just a destination for families and its proprietors to experience an extraordinary family venue or an opportunity to birdie #18 at Pebble Beach. It offers members and guests a unique space with privacy to entertain clients and new business prospects as an alternative to traditional lunch meetings or golf and the 19th hole. The club is open 24/6, accessible through a designated mobile app for around-the-clock access, and currently offers food and beverage service between 8:00am and 10:00pm. Designed with room to grow, the club currently has six beautifully designed swing suites that include full concierge service, and a VIP suite for confidentiality with a private entrance. In addition, the club is scaled in 2022 to include a highly anticipated new indoor putting green equipped with PuttView to help jumpstart anyone’s short game, an outdoor patio and three small conference rooms for quiet work meetings. 20 slmag.net

Powered by Trackman’s state-of-the-art technology, members and guests can take clients across the pond to St. Andrews for eighteen holes, play interactive family games, or just head in for a quick nine and dine all within the limits of their timeframe. The luxury swing suites are beautifully designed private accommodations that include access to a personal server, a full menu, cocktails, and a large television for access to your favorite ball games or news programs while at play. In addition, Trackman technology allows golfers to practice like the pros, driving balls at the oversized screen, with accurate results that help benefit your game in a multitude of ways with just a touch of the finger. Data on ball and club speed or spin rate and attack angle, are only a few of the 26 performanceenhancing pieces of information available in real-time. If you need additional instruction and interpretation of your data, meet Director of Golf Sean Wells, who brings thirty years of

excellence and experience as a PGA Golf professional for the ultimate in VIP instruction and coaching. The Golf Sanctuary offers complete concierge experience, including an incredible food and beverage menu handcrafted by Chef Joey Ray. Joey was previously the Executive Chef at The Graduate Hotel. He is known for his vast culinary experience in some of the most amazing foodie establishments across the country, such as The Carneros Resort & Spa in Napa, The Hermitage Hotel, and The Ainsworth here in Nashville. In addition, Joey started the Barbers Q, a restaurant that allowed this esteemed chef to hone his talents as a world-champion pitmaster. With Chef Joey’s culinary offerings, The Golf Sanctuary is destined to become one of Brentwood, Tennessee’s hidden treasures; his extensive menu includes sophisticated dining options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner by way of reservation

only. Even mom’s pickiest eaters will want to head there for enticing bites of Chef Joey’s gourmet pimento grilled cheese that will leave your taste buds in a trance! It is golf all day, every day at The Golf Sanctuary, with limitless golf opportunities to increase your skillset while playing with friends and family—what better way to spend an afternoon! With all the benefits of Trackman’s newest technology, The Golf Sanctuary will soon be offering global connectivity through tournaments that allow members to participate with other golfers worldwide. This executive service benefits its guests for the ultimate social and gaming experience. An excellent space for corporate events and holiday parties, it is no doubt that this club will climb the social ladder quickly. LA Closet Design comes to Nashville with a cure for chaos Written by Melissa Mahanes / Photos courtesy of LA Closet Design Any search of “custom closet design” on Instagram, Pinterest, or tuning into any recent Real Housewives episode will yield a flood of enviable spaces that look more like high-end boutiques. With all the time spent at home in the last year or so, homeowners are looking at their personal spaces and evaluating not only what they own but how to protect what they have, enjoy it and keep it organized. Instead of socking them away in a drawer, people want to display their coveted collections of designer handbags and shoes, jewelry, and watches. They also may dream of a champagne button or coffee station close by to have a relaxing start or finish to their day. “If people have something they value a lot, they want to create a perfect space for it, to highlight it,” says Lisa Adams, the founder of LA Closets, who has recently scaled her business to Nashville.

Founded in Los Angeles in 2007, Lisa has created custom luxury retreats for a notable client base, including Christina Aguilera, Reese Witherspoon, Billy Crystal, Tyra Banks, Olivia Culpo, Fergie, Khloe Kardashian, and Kris Jenner. Born and raised in Honolulu, Lisa Adams holds two undergraduate degrees and an MBA from Pepperdine University. Her Chemistry degree from UC Berkeley may seem like a surprising major for a custom closet designer; it actually is that left-brain mentality that helps her visualize and find the best solution to sort through the chaos and create a serene, meticulously organized space. She has recently collaborated with Four Seasons Hotels, Longines, spatial designer Paul Milinski and lighting and furniture designer Lee Broom who appreciate her sleek aesthetic. slmag.net

23

24 slmag.net

“My mission is to create wardrobe and storage spaces that are balanced functionally and aesthetically. As a designer, I see the potential in this under-utilized and often out of control space to add value to your home and to calm the chaos of everyday life”, says Adams. Working with clients and collaborators across the globe, Adams is inspired by each opportunity to bring serenity and organization to daily disorder. With the versatility to design multifunctional spaces that range from feminine to masculine, classic to cutting-edge, she ensures that each client feels as if they have a dream boutique in their very own home. “The closet is where we most often spend the first and last moments of a day, and unfortunately, at those times, many of us deal with universal closet issues: cluttered, overstuffed, and unorganized spaces. Instead, I look at both your room—and your life—and then I create a space of peace, beauty, and even glamour”, tells Adams. Since launching LA Closet Design, she has created spaces that go beyond functionality—her wardrobes are balanced, luxurious sanctuaries that combine a timeless attention to detail

with a modern focus on environmentally harmonious materials. As a result, she creates spaces that reflect a unique blend of sophistication and accessibility. There is increasing demand to make one’s closet more than just racks for hanging clothes. Clients want true customizations like desks, jewelry and accessory islands, glam stations, seating, and staging areas. “I’ll tell clients, ‘Ultimately, you want to feel like you’re shopping in your own closet,’” she said. For people with extensive wardrobes, the ways that stores display inventory can be genuinely useful. But the concerns are not purely practical. “There’s a reason why people like to shop in boutiques,” Adams said. “The good lighting, things having a place, it’s uncluttered, there’s seating, there’s champagne— it’s just the whole feeling.” The process begins with an in-person consultation, an evaluation of the client’s requirements, and an inventory of what needs to be contained within the space. Then, they take stock of every piece, down to the last pair of shoes, to make sure they design a space that fits you, not one you have to fit into. slmag.net

25

When it comes to the design of your closet, they don’t leave an inch of space overlooked. LA Closet Design takes total measurements to create a final design that is as functional as it is stunning. So, whether you want a tranquil space to unwind on your own, or an intimate gathering place, they plan a design that fits your lifestyle as much as your wardrobe. Once they’ve designed your dream space, the build begins. LA Closet Design oversees each step of the process as their trusted artisans and craftspeople fabricate your fully customized design. Once your space is complete, LA Closet Design personally assures each piece in your wardrobe arrives at its new home. In her years of experience, Lisa has developed products specifically designed to beautifully maximize your organization and make it easy to maintain order long after move-in. She has a full line of custom closet accessories on her website and has written a book, Closet Design Bible, providing readers with tips and glimpses of her swoon-worthy projects. 26 slmag.net

The local high-end real estate market also recognizes the value added to one’s property by including an entire custom closet (or two) in one’s home renovation project or new build. It is an attractive characteristic to a listing and worth the investment to have ample storage and display in closets—both while you are enjoying your space and when it is time to move. “It’s about being proud of your space, feeling really good and calm in your space,” Adams said. She has designed closets with personalized details such as putting greens and stripper poles, fireplaces, and even a three-story 4,500 square foot dream space with an elevator. She would be thrilled for the opportunity to collaborate with you to achieve your unique and personalized sanctuary here in Nashville. sl Social media channels: Instagram and Twitter: @LAClosetDesign YouTube Channel: www.youtube.com/user/LAClosetDesign Blog: www.closetphile.com Custom closet accessories: www.shopclosetdesign.com

Carne Mare

MAKE IT A DOUBLE Chef Andrew Carmellini and NoHo Hospitality bring a dynamic duo of restaurants at the W Nashville

Written by Melissa Mahanes / Photos by Brianna Balducci, Noah Fecks, Nicole Frantzen and MJ McGeeney When we covered the grand opening of the W Hotel Nashville in the November/December 2021 issue, we teased that we would be telling you all about the W’s new dining venues. We have had the opportunity to visit both, and it was a double delight! Carne Mare is inspired by an Old-World Italian trattoria with chic contemporary touches. Double James Beard Award-winning and Best New Chef from Food & Wine recognized chef Andrew Carmellini, alongside Luke Ostrom and Josh Pickard of NoHo Hospitality, brings a new culinary experience to Nashville. Carne Mare is intended to be a special night out on the town but feels like a familiar regular neighborhood spot. Carne Mare’s hand-selected cuts of steak, fine seafood, and Italian specialties reflect Carmellini’s impressive international experience, including working under Valentino Mercantile at the Michelin two-star San Domenico in Emilio-Romagna, Italy, an undisputed culinary mecca. We immediately felt drawn into the warm and friendly environment and were expertly directed on a culinary trip full of delicious stops throughout Italy. A dramatic vaulted ceiling over 28 slmag.net

the main dining area designed by New York-based architecture and design firm The Rockwell Group elegantly balances warm and rustic design details such as rich walnut millwork, brass accents, and leather banquettes. The open seating plan is intended to draw guests’ attention to the glass-walled kitchen, where food is cooked over the wood-fired grill. The main dining room opens up to an outdoor patio, which will be wonderful in warmer weather. The barroom, set apart by a black, gray, and white mosaic tile floor, offers additional banquette seating and leather barstools at the large, wood-paneled bar with a striking green quartz counter. There is also a private dining room, which seats 22. A delightful selection of Oysters, a Jumbo Gulf Shrimp Cocktail, “Tartares and Carpaccios” (like Wagyu Beef Tartare with tomato sauce and Sardinian paper bread and octopus carpaccio with sweet drop peppers and crispy pepperoni) are an excellent way to start the evening. “Chophouse Snacks” such as mozzarella sticks with caviar or spicy crab lettuce cups with Italian chili crisp are designed to pass around the table to get a delicious hint of what is to come.

A selection of salads, some tossed tableside include a House Wedgini, a Sicilian Caesar, and the Tableside Farmer’s Salad. The handmade plates of pasta and seafood specialties are special: like salt-baked black sea bass wrapped in fig leaves and a dazzling Spicy Lobster Spaghetti, and the Milanese cowboy veal chop with charred lemon was beautifully crusted and tender. The vast selection of Prime American beef are the stars of the show at Carne Mare. Both traditional and new-age techniques are employed to prepare the various cuts. From steaks and chops for one, notably the 10oz Snake River Wagyu “Bavetta” Steak, to behemoths like the 40oz 30-day dry-aged Tomahawk and the 45oz 45-day dry-aged Porterhouse in the style of ‘Bistecca Fiorentina’ to share, to the 16oz 12-hour porchetta-spiced roast prime rib, there is a tender cut of meat to suit all tastes. There are vegetarian offerings as well, including the creatively prepared Smoke-Roasted Beet Steak, which is finished tableside on the grill. Shareable sides were a delicious complement to our steaks and chops. The Heirloom Polenta with herb caprino was smooth and buttery, and the fresh and peppery arugula was a great foil to the richness of our steaks and chops. Carmellini’s longtime Beverage Director and Master Sommelier Josh Nadel leads the wine program. The list primarily focuses on Italy’s indigenous varietals, including selections from the Piedmont, Sicily, Tuscany, and Campania 30 slmag.net

regions, with some North American and French wines offering a supporting role. They strive to demystify wine and present a quality selection that will appeal to everyone and complement the cuisine perfectly. They also feature local and imported beers, a range of Italian aperitifs, and expertly crafted cocktails, including a few finished tableside. For a sweet finish, the 17-layer chocolate espresso cake is a spectacular treat, and the baked spumoni for two flambéed tableside is a theatrical marvel. Finally, a homebrewed limoncello was the perfect conclusion to a delicious meal. We will certainly consider Carne Mare for those special occasions when we want to be treated to a sublime culinary journey to Italy. The Dutch serves as a delicious counterpoint to Carne Mare, providing a more casual dining experience without sacrificing any of Chef Carmellini’s talents. The Dutch’s comfort food is elevated to a new level using seasonal ingredients. The bar menu has a large selection of bourbons and whiskeys, but there’s an excellent selection of wine, beer, and other spirits, too. The Rockwell Group is also responsible for creating this cozy yet modern atmosphere. Bleached oak and brick, a central fireplace with multiple dining spaces, a spacious island bar with hanging greenery and green leather banquettes surround the centralized interior fireplace and wrap-around patio—one along 12th Avenue South and the other facing Laurel Street.

Starters include an impressive selection of oysters, and crudos, a lobster cocktail, and a chilled Atlantic red crab salad, with a piquant bloody mary dressing. Salads and appetizers run the gamut from chipotle-scallion cornbread with whipped honey butter, wagyu beef carpaccio, smoked beets with labneh, citrus and pistachio crumble, to blistered shishitos with lime and smoked sea salt. Entrees range from seafood selections of sauteed sea scallops with sweet potato, pumpkin seed and mescal butter, Verlasso salmon with avocado salsa verde and pickled mango, and steamed red snapper with sweet peppers, peanuts and coconut curry. Meat entrees include a smoked grilled pork chop with collard greens, bacon jam and rosemary-roasted apples, smothered pecan duck, and two steaks-a hanger steak with kimchi fried rice and a sunny side up farm egg and a 24 oz. 38-day dry aged T-bone. and strawberry, and an enticing dark chocolate pudding soufflé all caught our attention and satisfied our cravings for something sweet. For brunch, the raw bar menu is available, as well as the above-mentioned burger, fried chicken and hangar steak. Frittatas, flapjacks, avocado toast or benedict are delicious ways to extend a leisurely weekend. A mimosa or Bellini, Urban Juicer cold-pressed juices, or the AC Bloody Mary with Tito’s Vodka, chipotle and house pickles sounds like delicious “hair of the dog” elixirs. The Dutch will be a spot we would certainly recommend when heading downtown to a game, concert, or show when we are craving some delicious comfort food with some fun twists or a brunch before a trip to the Frist Museum. Artist Sheppard Morose with the dye sublimation prints she created for the JCCA of Kansas City and Omaha.

PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE

An interview with artist Sheppard Morose who reflects on the multi-generational significance of creating and appreciating art. Written by Bridget Williams Sheppard Morose strongly believes that art is much more than just pleasing to the eye. “Great art lasts lifetimes, and I'm challenged to create art that meets that standard,” she said. Read on to see how the St. Louis-based artist has created a unique niche creating bespoke pieces for clients in both the public and private sector. SL: Tell us about your background. SM: I came to fine art through the back door of an advertising and graphic design career. Not only was I was able to learn the fundamentals of design from the working professors at the University of Illinois and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, but I was also able to experience a glimpse of how the corporate world works. My Mom was a fine art major, and my Dad is a civil engineer, so we always had plenty of art supplies and examples of beautiful, functional design all around us growing up. I remember conversations with my Mom in our garden where she described the colors and textures of the plants, sky, and landscape in fascinating detail. She was coaching me to have an "artist's eye" at a very young age and I'm grateful for that. Modern masters like Alexander Calder, Ellsworth Kelly, Henri Matisse, Mies Van der Rohe, Pablo Picasso and Helen Frankenthaler help inform me of complex color combinations and composition. 40 slmag.net

Frankenthaler pioneered what came to be called "color field painting," a style of abstractionism emergent in New York City midway through the 20th century, and she's been a key influence. SL: How would you define your style, and has it evolved over the years? Do you have any unique methods that you employ when creating art? SM: I think I'm known for my bright, bold abstract work that's showing up in corporate collections across the country and my nature-inspired original paintings for healthcare spaces and homes. It's usually the color that moves my audience. I often put contrasting colors right next to each other to pack an extra punch. I use soothing muted colors for spas or hospitals, often green or "nature's neutral" that serve as a backdrop for healing. It's a privilege to participate in a profession that serves others. My strength lies in working directly with CEOs, architects, and interior designers to help create interiors that uplift and engage. Some of my installations stretch three stories high as my digital files can be enlarged and printed, keeping their crisp resolution. I use two main processes to create my work. In the first, acrylic paint is applied layer after layer as tints or sold colors. As the layers build, texture is often created. I use traditional paintbrushes and what I call "kinetic" paintbrushes, which are

Morose applied the Golden Ratio to create this series of dye sublimation prints.

large industrial mops that I've trimmed to unique shapes and move or swing as I use them. Palette knife paintings have been innovative solutions where there is excellent lighting and a need for texture. The second method is dye sublimation printing. Once I create the image, typically on my Mac, there is a high heat transfer of powdered pigments that are permanently bonded with aluminum, then coated with a polymer that protects the art, so it wears like iron. This is perfect for public spaces as the color never fades, and the surface is protected. SL: What does art, particularly a custom piece, contribute to a space? SM: It brings individual expression. When April Jensen, a St. Louis designer, and her client needed art to serve a real function within her interior design concept, we created custom art pieces that made the client feel calm and peaceful in her home. Something many of us need in a busy world. When the JCCA of Kansas City and Omaha remodeled and expanded their spaces, they envisioned Centers where people could be active and engaged, accented with natural light and colorful artwork. We used glossy, reflective dye sublimation prints to accomplish this goal.

St. Louis interior designer April Jensen tasked Morose to create a custom painting for a client’s bedroom. Photo courtesy of ADJ Interiors.

SL: What does art mean to you? SM: Art is powerful. Throughout history, it documents unforgettable events and the natural world. Species that are extinct live on through the botanical renderings from artists' past. Art is healing. Scientific studies prove that natural images and colors will lower blood pressure, reduce stress and elevate mood. Research also shows that patients exposed to art during a hospital stay heal quicker and have a better overall experience. Art is an avenue for communication for those who use it as therapy. This process helps one to re-experience emotions and organize feelings around an overwhelming experience. Art is a study of mathematics. I use the Golden Ratio; the ratio is 1 to 1.618, also called Phi, to determine proportions and break up space. Artists and designers have been using this ratio since the beginning, and it occurs in nature repeatedly. (Photos of color block pieces.) Art explores the latest technology. For example, NFTs or 'non-fungible tokens' are unique digital certificates stored on a blockchain and have certain ownership rights in an asset, typically a digital one. What an exciting time in art history! The challenge for designers today is to create surroundings at home and work to support individuals' communal, mental, and physical needs within the space. Art is often part of the solution. sl To learn more, visit sheppardmorose.com. slmag.net

WHY YOU SHOULD BUY SPIRITS FROM INDEPENDENT BOTTLERS Industry veteran Sam Filmus, creator of the ImpEx Collection, tells us why. Compiled by Chloe Gellar / Images courtesy of ImpEx Collection

We asked Sam Filmus, President of ImpEx Beverages, to share what he sees as the evolution of the independent bottler movement and why luxury consumers should start adding independent bottles to their whisky collection. Filmus has his Whisky Certification from the University of the Highlands and Islands Moray College and is a designated Keeper of the Quaich, an exclusive and international society of individuals recognized for their commitment to the Scotch whisky industry.

cases) as single casks and (in most cases) at a higher ABV under their own label. We are fortunate enough to feature quite a few IBs in our portfolio at ImpEx Beverages—the importation company I run with ImpEx Beverages Vice President, Chris Uhde—such as Single Cask Nation, Single Malts of Scotland, Port Askaig, Adelphi, and now The ImpEx Collection. Chris and I launched the Collection in July after taking three years to hand-select and bottle what we believe to be some of the best spirits in the world.

SL: Let's start with the basics - what is a single cask whisky? Filmus: A single cask whisky is one in which all the bottles have matured together. So, they stay in the same cask or can be transferred into another for finishing. Some distilleries will use these to create vattings of multiple single casks or to become part of their official bottlings/distillery releases.

SL: How do they compare to Original Distillery Bottlings? Filmus: Since both are produced at the same distilleries, in many cases, they would both carry the signature style and profile of these distilleries. I think the main difference is that while the distillery is working towards being consistent with their original bottlings, there is a bit more flexibility in terms of single cask offerings, such as their wood treatment and desired outcome. The opportunity to find some really unique and special offerings that could have been lost in a vat is really the desired outcome when it comes to single cask expressions as this is a chance to see the casks shine in their true and natural form.

SL: What is a distillery release? Filmus: This is (in most cases) a vatting of a large number of casks that distilleries are aiming to be part of their core offerings. Some examples could include Lagavulin 16 yr, Oban 14 yr, Laphroaig 10 yr, or Glenlivet 12 yr – among many others. Small batches can also apply to this, and there are single casks and limited release offerings that come out from time to time as well. SL: What are Independent Bottlers? Filmus: Independent bottlers (IBs) are companies that source casks from various distilleries or via brokers and bottle them (in most 42 slmag.net

SL: Why don't more consumers know about or purchase from IBs? Filmus: 90% of what is produced these days in Scotland are blends. From the remaining 10%, you find the more well-known single malt contributors, and then from there, you find some major IBs who have been establishing their names for decades, if not centuries (like Cadenhead's and Gordon & MacPhail).

Casa Grande. Photo by Simon Lewis

While people are used to seeing labels from these more wellknown brands (OBs), when they see a recognizable name and the label looks different, people automatically suspect that the quality would not be the same. Therefore, more and more people are now gravitating towards what they can expect to find from these lesserknown bottlings coming from IBs and appreciate now that they are both coming from the same distilleries. SL: I noticed you don't only have whiskies in your collection, can any spirit be independently bottled? Filmus: Yes, any spirit can be independently bottled, provided the distillery is open to it. We have included World Whisky and Rum in our Edition One bottlings. We are anticipating a Japanese whisky release with Edition Two along with a mezcal. SL: How has the IB industry changed over the years? Filmus: I think people are much more receptive to trying independent bottlings now than they were in the past. People have started to see this as an art form and are more willing to try something Independently Bottled than they were in the past. SL: Where do you see it going? Filmus: I see the category growing rapidly. When I started representing IBs over 15 years ago, there were only a few of them then, and it was a very tough sale as people didn't understand the concept. Now, we've seen many IBs showing up on the shelf, and the category has grown for all.

SL: Why did you enter the IB business? Filmus: While consumers have appreciated the distillery releases we are carrying, there is something special and collectible about single cask expressions that are one-time releases. SL: What gets you excited about this side of the industry? Filmus: Maybe it's a little ambitious, but I would like to think that these single cask offerings bring a greater appreciation for the distilleries we bottle from, giving a new segment of customers the chance to enjoy these expressions in their truest form. A great example of this is Caol Ila; it is one of the largest portions of what goes into Johnny Walker and gives it the peatiness and smokiness that you find there. When people draw a comparison between the two, they find they grow a fondness for the mainstream release because of what they find unique about the Single Cask. SL: Can you give our readers some tips for picking IBs? Filmus: I think that the beauty of IBs is that you can explore individual components of something that may be more familiar. IBs give you the ability to explore the juice in a higher ABV and the truest form. I think you get a chance to really appreciate what you love about a specific expression. When you go with an IB, you can narrow down what is appealing to you as an individual. We try to give as much information as possible on our labels distillation date, bottling date, number of bottles, cask type, etc. so that the consumer can decide what is most appealing to their senses and palate. sl slmag.net

ELEVATED ISLAND TIME A resort-within-a-resort, Rosewood Baha Mar delivers all the amenities of a mega resort with an aura of exclusivity Written by Bridget Williams

Somewhere in the not-too-far distance, screams of delight are funneling down a colorful tube in a waterpark; cries of jubilation ring out in the casino; people are nodding their head to a pulsing beat at a pool. But here, during teatime in the Library Lounge at Rosewood Baha Mar, I am world's away and perfectly at ease while I savor a perfectly brewed cup of tea whose color mimics my sunkissed skin, still warm from the sun. Opened in 2017 with 2,200 rooms spread across three hotels on 1,000 acres in New Providence in The Bahamas, Baha Mar is by definition a mega-resort. This designation that can elicit a notso-favorable response based on one's prior experience, this writer 44 slmag.net

included. However, after a recent visit, I was forced to rethink my innate aversion to large-scale developments. There are three distinct brands on property: Grand Hyatt, SLS, and Rosewood, with the latter, at just 12 stories and 230 rooms and suites, perches above Cable Beach and the pecking order on the property. The Rosewood Baha Mar's contemporized take on British Colonial-style begins as soon as you enter the foyer-like lobby, enveloped in a floor-to-ceiling hand-painted mural reminiscent of de Gournay wallpaper. In keeping with Rosewood's Hotels "A Sense of Place" philosophy, John Cox, Rosewood Baha Mar's Creative Art Director, collaborated with artists at SilverHill

The reception area at ESPA

Atelier to create Bahamian scenes evocative of another celebrated island artist, John Hussey. Intimate seating areas, plenty of coffee-table books, and creative accessorizing add to the upscale residential feel. My favorite public space inside Rosewood Baha Mar is the Library Lounge, defined by muted colors, handsome furnishings, and tall ceilings accentuated by a pair of bookcases separated by another bespoke artwork resulting from SilverHill and Cox working in concert. We found ourselves here multiple times a day, selecting from an extensive selection of loose leaf teas, including unique Bahamian blends, while we relished the beauty of the surroundings.

Guest accommodations carry forth the casual elegance established in the lobby. Closets flanked the entry to the spa-like bathroom, sheathed in marble. Colors evocative of the island— coral and Caribbean blues—pop against a soothing sun washed backdrop. From our balcony, we noted that the pool areas' landscaping is so lush that you see enticing slivers of blue among an expanse of green. The elevated vantage point allows you to appreciate the sprawling nature of the property. Still, it doesn't feel that way as you wind your way through the lush setting at ground level, where the landscape's design reveals intimate seating areas, shops, and restaurants around every corner. slmag.net

Chefs Daniel Boulud and David LePage

Baha Mar takes its food scene seriously, and it has recruited a galaxy of star power to lend credence to its 40 unique dining venues celebrating a variety of global cuisines. Sadly, there are way more dining options than we had days available to try them all. At the pinnacle of the culinary program is Café Boulud The Bahamas. Located in the lower level of the Rosewood in a beautifully outfitted dining room bursting with Bahamian art, traditional French technique meets island hospitality (minus the island time). A production in the best way, our dinner was a true feast for the senses, and after we savored the last bite of our Tarte Au Citron and rose to leave, our server warmly embraced us like we were old friends. There's nothing that compares with genuine and kind human interaction, and the staff at Baha Mar seem to possess this innate ability to connect in spades. Award-winning chef Danny Elmaleh conceptualized the menus at Cleo Mediterraneo, adjacent to the SLS Baha Mar's lobby. The focal point of the restaurant's relaxed interior is an organic sandstone wall with succulent plants and moss spilling from the crevices. We enjoyed a Mediterranean-inspired feast over a series of small plates. Seeking shelter from a popup rain shower allowed us to discover Da' Poke Bowl Shack for lunch. Located in one of a series of cute beach "shacks" with other dining establishments in a pathway that links the Grand Hyatt to the beach, the umamipacked punch of flavor was just what we needed to forget the rainy day blues. Another lunch standout was Costa, a Mexican restaurant 46 slmag.net

with unique dining cabanas overlooking Rosewood's lush gardens. El Jefe is another delicious Mexican option serving tacos from a beachfront Airstream trailer. If you time it right, you can nosh while watching the daily parade of flamingos and the hordes of guests accompanying them. Enjoying fresh seafood close to the source is on the menu at Marcus at Baha Mar Fish + Chop House. Six-time James Beard Award-winning chef Marcus Samuelsson spent four years learning everything he could about Bahamian cuisine and island food culture to develop his spin on Caribbean comfort food. While eating to your heart's content is undoubtedly an option, I'd highly recommend partaking in a host of onsite recreation amenities in between meals. Of course, water is the obvious star of the show when it comes to activities. There are more pools than I could count, including many adult-only options. In addition, guests of the Rosewood are privy to a private beach and exclusive fullservice pools. The kid in me loved the newly opened and crowd-free waterpark; my adult side appreciated its distance from the heart of the resort so that you didn't have to walk through it while traveling from one side of the resort to the other throughout the day. Those who prefer greens over blue will appreciate the Royal Blue Golf Club, an 18-hole par-72 course designed by Jack Nicklaus. As my golf skills are subpar, but I'm still competitive, I thoroughly enjoyed a round at Mini Blue, a professional puttinginspired 18-hold miniature golf course near the Racquet Club.

The working art studio within The Current

While you can treat yourself after a round at Rosewood Baha Mar's onsite spa, I'd highly recommend the short stroll to ESPA, which serves the entirety of the property with a 30k square-foot glitter fest of tranquility. An affirmation walk etched into the floor leading to the lounge reminds guests to "let it go." The complex also boasts a sprawling fitness facility. Linking all three hotels is the Caribbean's largest casino, with 18 different types of table games and more than 1,000 slot machines. We didn't partake of the games, but we did enjoy the nightly live entertainment at Bar Noir, which offers a prime view of the action on the casino floor, lots of interesting cocktail options, and signature Petrossian caviar. Of the many things unique to the property is the attention given to elevating Bahamian artists: ninety percent of the art displayed is Bahamian in origin. John Cox, a painter, sculptor, and former chief curator at the National Art Gallery in the Bahamas, oversees the 2,500 pieces in Baha Mar's collection and The Current (thecurrent.bahamar.com/), an onsite art gallery, working studio, and retail shop. The Rhode Island School of Design alum cuts a striking figure that exudes the confidence of someone with the "it factor,"

but without any hit of pretentiousness. What is most captivating about Cox is his palpable passion for his craft and elevating the work of his contemporaries and predecessors. A powerful storyteller, Cox has a gift for switching up messaging on a dime so that whether he's speaking to an aficionado or a child, there's a meaningful context in his message. "Our goal is to see if we can inform what the Bahamian experience is through art so that it causes people to see and experience and shock them in a good way," Cox explained. A significant portion of the collection is on display in the pre-function space in the onsite convention center as part of the Fairwind Exhibition, a showcase of Bahamian art from the early 1800s to the present. We'd arranged for a one-hour tour with Cox, and two hours later (and late for his next meeting), we continued to be enrapt by his enthusiasm and the immensity of the thought that has gone into the themed groupings, that encompass everything from coral reefs to colonialism. This subtle encouragement of more thoughtful tourism is just one example that Baha Mar is seeking to redefine the notion of a mega-resort. sl Rates at Rosewood Baha Mar from $695/night. HOME IN THE RANGE Cozy up to the elegant 2022 Range Rover, which provides more refinement, customer choice, and personalization options than ever before. Written by Andre James / Photography courtesy of Land Rover The fifth-generation luxury SUV, designed, developed, and engineered in the UK, presents a contemporary interpretation of Land Rover’s trademark profile. “The New Range Rover is a superb manifestation of our vision to create the world’s most desirable luxury vehicles for the most discerning of customers. It writes the next chapter in the unique story of pioneering innovation that has been a Range Rover hallmark for more than 50 years,” said Thierry Bolloré, Chief Executive Officer, Jaguar Land Rover. In creating the 2022 Range Rover, Land Rover filed no fewer than 125 patents covering everything from its pioneering chassis technologies to its PHEV battery. No less than 140,000 hours of computational analysis took place before the rubber ever hit the road. During research and development, a fleet of disguised prototypes dispersed across the globe endured temperatures exceeding 100°F in arid deserts to -20°F in the icy Arctic. While decidedly forward-facing, the SUV’s falling roofline, strong waistline, and rising sill line discernably trace their origins back through the generations. These trademark features 52 slmag.net

combine with a characteristically short front overhang and a distinctive new boat-tail rear. Underpinning every aspect of the SUV, available in SE and Autobiography models at launch, is a brand-new flexible Modular Longitudinal Architecture (MLAFlex), virtually eliminating unwanted noises and vibrations. The New Range Rover is the first Land Rover vehicle to feature optional Power-Assisted Doors – available at 2023 model year – with integrated hazard detection and anti-pinch features. The practical two-piece split tailgate that has been a Range Rover hallmark since 1970 is updated for 2022, with a series of new technologies providing greater versatility and convenience. Further enhancing the ride are Dynamic Response Pro and pre-emptive suspension that use eHorizon Navigation data to read the road ahead and prime the suspension to provide appropriate responses. Adaptive Cruise Control with Steering Assist can smooth out body movements resulting from sudden speed changes. Land Rover’s first-ever five-link rear axle isolates the cabin from surface imperfections using advanced air springs.

Land Rover’s award-winning Terrain Response 2 system harnesses the various chassis systems to automatically provide the perfect settings and minimize driver workload across multiple terrains. Alternatively, the driver can manually select the most appropriate setting or use Configurable Terrain Response to create a bespoke chassis set-up. In addition, every New Range Rover features All-Wheel Steering for heightened stability at higher speeds and improved maneuverability at low speeds. At present, buyers can choose either a turbocharged 3.0liter inline-six that delivers 395-horsepower or a thundering 523-horsepower twin-turbo V-8 engine. Spearheading the Land Rover brand’s Reimagine strategy, a new extended-range plug-in hybrid (PHEV) joins the family in 2023. It combines the inherent refinement of Land Rover’s inline six-cylinder Ingenium engine with a 38.2kWh lithium-ion battery. LEANING IN

Grand Residences Riviera Cancun emerges from the pandemic as the flagship resort for Wyndham's Registry Collection Hotels. Written by Bridget Williams / Photography by Shelby Bourne Technology is both a bane and boon when traveling with children. While I can fully appreciate its usefulness during long flights or car rides, I am dismayed when I see both children and adults mindlessly scrolling rather than being present in the moment while vacationing. So it was a striking absence of screen fixation that struck me while strolling the grounds at Grand Residences Riviera Cancun. With the resort ideally positioned to face the east, sleepy-eyed guests filed onto their balcony or the beachfront each morning for a front-row seat to the sunrise. By mid-morning, children lined up outside the activity center. Anticipating the arrival of their favorite staff members, they bounced with the same enthusiasm as though Santa and his elves were on their way. Staff reciprocates this eagerness in spades, as I discovered while watching an energetic instructor leading a morning poolside Zumba class. Although only one guest opted in, the instructor was strutting his stuff with the energy of opening night on Broadway. Overall, there's an aura of relaxed energy; by afternoon, many of the youngsters I spied in the morning were napping under the shade of a poolside cabana, worn out from a full day of fun. 58 slmag.net

Thoughtful service begins upon arrival as all guests receive complimentary private transportation to the resort from the airport in Cancun. During the 30-minute trip, our driver asked what we'd like for a welcome drink—it was a spicy margarita for me! The 144 all-suite Grand Residences Riviera Cancun, a flagship resort for Wyndham's Registry Collection Hotels, is located at the terminus of a long stretch of roadway lined with resorts near the sleepy fishing area village of Puerto Morelos. With accommodations ranging in size from a 635 square-foot junior suite up to an 8,762 square-foot penthouse presidential suite, the resort is an ideal destination for family and group travel. At nearly 1,800-square-feet, our well-appointed onebedroom oceanfront room boasted a fully equipped kitchen and large dining area. Walking past his and her closets and into the full bath, I was quick to note the Bulgari toiletries and an indoor soaking tub located under a gilded dome ceiling that could have doubled as a kiddie pool. A furnished balcony with a jacuzzi runs the suite's length and is accessible from the bedroom or living area. Suites located on the ground floor are notable for their private plunge pools.

Most guests choose to spend their days around the heart of the resort: a blue-tiled heated pool that terraces down to the beach and offers a designated adults-only pool with a swim-up bar. Attentive and personalized beach service is available at the pool and beach with welcomed amenities like cooling Evian mist, tropical fruit skewers, and fruitsicles. Based on the warm interactions between staff and guests, it was clear that there were many repeat customers among us. A designated lap pool located near the activity center also serves as an ideal spot for serene sunbathing. Knowing that the entirety of our short stay would be devoid of far-flung excursions, we opted for the All-In Grand Experience Plan, which included all meals and premium drinks. Unlike some all-inclusive properties where there are separate meals for room-only and all-in guests, at Grand Residences, there is no differentiation. You can even order prime cuts of beef from the room service menu to prepare in your suite, although we preferred to leave that up to the on-site kitchen experts. Arriving at lunchtime, we headed straight for Heaven Beach Bar and enjoyed a toes-in-the-sand al fresco lunch with superb shrimp tacos and the first, of what would be many, orders of 60 slmag.net

guacamole. The resort's two main dining options, El Faro Grill and Flor de Canela, are located at the apex of the pool area. The former serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner with both buffet and a la carte options and weekly themed menus that highlight global cuisines. I particularly enjoyed the regional Mexican favorites on offer as part of the breakfast buffet, which allowed me to indulge in plenty of spicy heat to jumpstart my day. Adorned with locally made art, Flor de Canela is a celebration of authentic Mexican food from all regions of the country. Seafood plays a starring role on the menu, though for me, it was the pomegranate-spiked guac and a serenade by local musicians that highlighted my dinner here. Those looking to indulge in the spaciousness of their suite can opt for a complete menu of in-suite dining options. An ingenious network of tunnels under the property allows an army of culinary and maintenance staff to go about their business nearly undetected and out of the heat and humidity. Afternoon tea is served three times a week on a covered terrace near the lobby in a building that overlooks the entirety of the property, including a verdant mangrove forest that serves as

a visual buffer between the surrounding structures. Popular for grabbing a morning coffee to go or wrapping up the day with a nightcap, the Lobby Café and Bar is notable for its handsome antique bar imported from England. An on-site Natural Foods Gourmet Market offers a fairly diverse array of prepackaged and fresh food, sundries, and souvenirs. While it was clear that most guests were content with downtime spent poolside or beachfront, there are many activities on and offsite to satiate those looking to be less languid. Snorkeling, ocean kayaking, tennis, beach volleyball, salsa lessons, cooking demonstrations, tequila tastings, and yoga are just a few of the offerings. Our only time off property was a short group bike ride into Puerto Morelos, reportedly the inspiration for Jimmy Buffett's iconic "Margaritaville." We enjoyed wandering around this laid-back village, visiting local shops, and snapping photos of its famous leaning lighthouse. For those who want to venture out further, the concierge can help arrange a multitude of adventurous excursions throughout the Riviera Maya. A small-but-capable spa and salon offers a host of indulgent and restorative body and face treatments. At the same time, the

fitness center with available personal trainers is amply-equipped to satiate the needs of workout fiends. Children can partake of an adult-supervised kids' club with activities from mask-making to sandcastle building taking place in a whimsically decorated "clubhouse" and throughout the resort. Just outside the entrance to the kids club is a pottery painting station, where guests can select a piece to paint and have it fired before their departure for a truly unique memento. At any given moment, it was a common occurrence to see more adults than children intently focused on creating a masterpiece. The leaning lighthouse has come to serve as a local symbol of resilience. The ability to adapt in the face of adversity also applies to the resort, which has persevered after a nearly fourmonth closure at the height of the pandemic in 2020 to see its average stay creep up from three to seven nights. It's no doubt a testament to their stalwart commitment to creating unique and elevated experiences for every guest. Room-only rates at Grand Residences Riviera Cancun from $350/night. CAN’T GET ENOUGH OF CANADA The Canadian Rockies provide natural beauty and year-round appeal

Written by Christy Waller / Photos courtesy of Fairmont Château Lake Louise and Fairmont Banff Springs Tucked in the spectacular Canadian Rockies, Lake Louise has become synonymous with awe inspiring nature. Millions flock to see the almost surreal beauty of the Lake, complete with picturesque mountains, views of the Victoria Glacier, and its famous turquoise waters. The glacial Lake is a part of the Banff National Park in Alberta, Canada. The Park was established in 1885 as Canada’s first National Park and only the third National Park globally. The Park is now also a World Heritage Site per the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (more commonly “UNESCO”), which aids the Park in conserving the over 7,700 square miles it encompasses. Banff National Park is known for alpine tree lines, sweeping meadows, and massive glaciers that draw you toward Lake Louise. At an elevation of 1,600 meters, Lake Louise is just a 40-minute ride from the small town of Banff, with a population of just 7,500. There is never a wrong time to visit Alberta—while Lake Louise can truly embody the idea of a ‘Winter Wonderland,’ you 68 slmag.net

can see its turquoise waters at their most colorful when it has completely thawed by July/August. The lure of Lake Louise only begins with its aesthetic—regardless of when you visit, there is something for everyone to enjoy. Winter months bring skiing, ice climbing, sleigh rides, ice skating, and more quintessential winter activities. Similarly, the summer boasts hiking trails, canoeing the famous waters, rock climbing, and alpine mountaineering. While the surrounding area experiences the heavy snows of October, the Lake itself typically begins to freeze in early November, marking the beginning of ski season for the Lake Louise Ski Resort. This time is the best time for ice-skating, as the blue waters have just frozen without too much snowfall on the ice. Finally, in early June, the Lake begins to thaw for canoeing. When visiting Lake Louise, the opportunity to become immersed in its natural beauty is when you stay on-site at either the Fairmont Château Lake Louise or Fairmont Banff Springs.

At the heart of Banff National Park sits the Fairmont Château Lake Louise. The 539-room resort offers both fitness and wellness classes, spa, and seasonal activities such as winter snowshoeing or summer kayaking, in addition to its connections to a variety of activities near the hotel. At the resort spa, you can find the perfect way to unwind and refresh after taking in all the outdoor experiences Lake Louise has to offer. The hotel’s staff of professional spa therapists provide a range of over 20 services, from soothing massages and facials to wellness treatments. So, whether you are looking to relax after a vigorous day exploring the Canadian Rockies or simply looking for an alternative to the outdoors, the Fairmont Lake Louise’s spa offers the perfect answer. The hotel also serves as an excellent touchstone to the breathtaking nature, especially during ski season. Not only does the hotel offer gear rentals through the Château Ski and Snow 70 slmag.net

Rentals inside the hotel, but it also connects guests to ski resorts in the area. Within the hotel’s vicinity is the Lake Louise Ski Resort, awarded ‘Best Ski Resort in Canada’ in 2019 by the World Ski Awards. Its 4,200 acres for skiing make it one of the largest on the continent, with opportunities for beginners and lifetime skiers alike. Regardless of who you travel with, you can access all levels of runs from each chair, allowing groups to enjoy skiing and snowboarding together. The hotel makes access to this fun for everyone easy with its complimentary shuttle. The ski resort is just a ten-minute drive from the hotel, and two other resorts—Mount Norquay and Sunshine Village—are less than an hour away. If you are looking to step outside of your comfort zone with more unorthodox winter activities, snowshoeing with Powderfest Snowshoeing is another great way to explore outside the hotel. Great for all ages, snowshoeing allows you to traverse in some of the fluffiest snow the world has to offer and take in all that the Banff National Park has to offer.

All of this outdoor exploring can work up an appetite, but the eats in the area have you got covered. Whether it’s dining alongside the inspiring views of the Canadian Rockies at the Fairview Bar and Restaurant or the Fairmont Château Lake Louise’s Afternoon tea, there is no shortage of fabulous eateries in the area. Other options include the comforting dark wood of Walliser Stube, famous for having the best cheese fondue outside of Switzerland. Poppy Brasserie is the perfect spot for a family breakfast before hitting the slopes, while Alpine Social features the best from the local Alberta area. In addition to Fairmont Château Lake Louise, the Fairmont Banff Springs offers a similarly cozy yet luxurious stay. The 757-room resort styled after a Scottish baronial castle offers a range of experiences from quiet, quaint rooms to luxury suites—all complete with the brilliant views of the National Park. Located at the base of Rundle Mountain is just minutes from the cosmopolitan mountain town of Banff. The hotel is also home to Stanley Thompson-designed Fairmont Banff Springs Golf Course, allowing guests to golf amidst the backdrop of the Canadian Rockies’ mountains and the Willow Steam Spa, offering the sounds of waterfalls during their rejuvenating and restorative treatments. 72 slmag.net

As for eating in the area, the hotel has 12 acclaimed restaurants boasting the best of Canada. If you are looking for classic FrenchCanadian dining, the Vermillion Room is the perfect spot. Similarly, 1888 Chop House and STOCK Food & Drink offer incredible selections of drinks and cuisine. Waldhaus Restaurant serves Bavarian food in a cozy lodge setting with a crackling fire. Their newest private outdoor dining venue, the 360° Dome offers three dining experiences including brunch, après, and dinner. Located on the picturesque Upper Garden Terrace, the 360° Dome is surrounded by panoramic views of the Canadian Rockies and the 132-year-old Castle. THRILL OF THE HUNT The contents of lost luggage find new owners at Unclaimed Baggage Written and photographed by Melissa Mahanes Over 99.5% of bags checked on the major domestic airlines are reunited with their owners right away. If a bag is truly lost, airlines will pay out a claim to the passenger. However, after an extensive three-month search, an unclaimed bag is deemed officially orphaned, a fate realized by less than 0.03% of all checked luggage. That’s where Unclaimed Baggage in Scottsboro, Alabama, comes in. It’s a little over 100 miles southeast of Nashville and well worth visiting if you want an exciting shopping adventure. In 1970, entrepreneur Doyle Owens headed to Washington, DC, to purchase his first load of unclaimed baggage from Trailways Bus Line in a borrowed pickup truck with a $300 loan. His truckload of luggage would be the genesis of a family business that has grown into a vast enterprise occupying an entire city block and employing many of Scottsboro’s residents. Gradually, Unclaimed Baggage formed relationships with domestic airlines and grew to become the country’s only lost luggage store. Unclaimed Baggage hosts more than one million store visitors each year from every state and more than 40 countries, making it one of Alabama’s top tourist attractions.

Fifty years later, the store processes thousands of suitcases and lost cargo containers each week (an approximately 70/30 suitcase to cargo split), all of which are sorted, cleaned, cleared, authenticated, priced, and stocked via the center’s complex processing system. A staggering 50,000 loads of laundry are processed each month, and approximately 7,000 unique items make it to the 30,000 square foot store each day, there to be discovered and “reclaimed” by new owners and sold for at least a 50% discount. The atmosphere in Unclaimed Baggage is electric with a mix of southern hospitality. The employees are all amiable and are genuinely thrilled for you when you discover your favorite treasures. They are eager to point out unique items in their extensive jewelry case that house diamonds, gold and silver jewelry, and watches. Right now, they proudly display a 14K marquis cut ruby and diamond ring ($21,757.99), an emerald and diamond bracelet ($14,472.99), and an 18K rose gold and pavé diamond Hermès Kelly Bracelet ($9,465.99). slmag.net

At the time of my visit, the Luxe Section had multiple pieces of Louis Vuitton luggage, a Gucci “Entrupy” Bee purse ($1,700.00), Gucci and Fendi purses and shoes, and other high-end designer accessories and clothing. Other treasures are dispersed throughout the neatly arranged racks with new and gently used apparel for men, women, and children, a large shoe department, cases of designer sunglasses, electronics (all scrubbed thoroughly of data) from Apple, Samsung, Nikon, and Canon, Beats, video games, and sporting equipment. On the first Saturday in November, their annual ski sale has shoppers camped outside the night before eagerly anticipating finding fantastic deals for the slopes and cold weather. In addition to the professional sorting that takes place behind the scenes, Unclaimed Baggage hosts daily interactive events: “The 80 slmag.net

Baggage Experience: The Game,” where a lucky shopper (on my visit, it was me) can participate in a suitcase sort. Likewise, “Finders Keepers: The Game” has shoppers picking from 3 suitcases for prizes. Throughout the store’s walls are museum-type displays of some of the more unusual finds over the years. Notable items are glittery stage costumes from Donny and Marie Osmond; a signed Paul McCartney roadie tour jacket, shrunken heads, tribal jewelry, and even a full coat of armor. They also have a charming café called Cups with salads and sandwiches (they tell us their chicken salad recipe is award-winning) and serve Starbuck’s beverages. Unclaimed Baggage also has a massive philanthropic heart. On average, for every item sold, they donate an additional item to someone in need. Their goal has always been to find a purpose

for any item possible. They have established partnerships with dozens of local, national, and global charity organizations to utilize as much as possible. Their Reclaimed for Good Foundation has donated millions of dollars’ worth of product and profit to meet needs all around the globe. Reclaimed for Good’s Love Luggage initiative has supported thousands of foster children by providing personalized suitcases to replace the garbage bags many typically use to transport their belongings. Over the past decade, Love Luggage has provided more than 500 suitcases to children in need, including foster children through Kids to Love. Since its inception in 2004, the foundation has impacted the lives of more than 210,000 foster children in Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia, and Mississippi.

Brand ambassadors from Unclaimed Baggage are currently on a 50-state anniversary tour in “Hugo,” the restored 1965 Chevrolet pickup that has been modeled after founder Hugo Doyle Owens’ original truck, which he drove to purchase his first load of unclaimed baggage. Visitors to their festival tent can help paint Love Luggage and see some of the fun artifacts they display to tell Unclaimed Baggage’s fascinating history. They also have an online shop at unclaimedbaggage.com that posts many treasures (but not all). So, if you like a little mystery, I highly recommend you embark on your own treasure hunt! sl Unclaimed Baggage / 509 West Willow Street, Scottsboro, AL 35768 (256) 259-1525 / unclaimedbaggage.com / Monday-Friday 9:00am-6:00pm CT, Saturday 8:00am-7:00pm Instagram: @unclaimedbag // Local Bed and Breakfast: Gorham’s Bluff / 101 Gorham’s Drive, Pisgah, AL (256) 451-8439 / gorhamsbluff.com

Irreversible is not a word you want to hear from your doctor but it's a common one if you've been diagnosed with Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy or "CIPN". Elliott S. of Nashville survived testicular cancer only to be affected by CIPN and was living in constant pain. He felt as though he were walking on pins and needles, becoming weaker and weaker every day. “I was beginning to be worried that I would be wheel-chair bound.” Chemotherapy medications travel throughout the body and attack cancer cells which cause severe damage to healthy nerves. CIPN can begin within weeks of starting treatment and can worsen as treatment continues. A high number of cancer patients are forced to endure the symptoms associated with CIPN for months or years after their treatments have completed. The most common symptoms of CIPN are pain, tingling, burning, weakness, or numbness in arms, legs or feet. Sudden sharp, stabbing or shocking pain sensations, loss of touch sensations, trouble using hands to pick up or fasten objects such as clothing, loss of balance or falling. For some, the nerves will recover over time. For most, the nerve damage is irreversible. Elliott S. had been told by a series of doctors and specialists they could cure his cancer, but could not fix the damage done by the chemo drugs. Elliott S. called Acupuncturist William Alexander L.Ac. of Affinity Accupuncture located in Brentwood. Affinity Accupuncture uses the time-tested science of Accupuncture and technology originally designed by NASA. Together, this technology assists in increasing blood flow and expediting recovering and healing to treat the pain.

After a series of treatments, Elliott S. was taking the stairs with stride. Elliott S. shared, “stairs have become mighty easy for me-I didn’t have to hold onto the rail or anything! It’s life changing to have this mobility back, and I’m back to my morning walks.” Again and again we meet patients who were diagnosed ‘untreatable’ or ‘incurable’, but after receiving treatments at Affinity Acupuncture are now living free from pain and suffering. William Alexander L.Ac. has been reversing the effects of CIPN and other varieties of Peripheral Neuropathy, including diabetes, without invasive surgeries and medications that come with uncomfortable side effects. If you’ve beat cancer only to find that you are living a life of constant pain and discomfort; or you’re struggling with the same symptoms as a result of either Idiopathic Neuropathy or Peripheral Neuropathy, contact William Alexander, L.Ac. and his incredible team at Affinity Acupuncture, centrally located in Brentwood.

It’s time you let your golden years BE GOLDEN! Schedule your consultation today!

Affinity Acupuncture is centrally located in Brentwood near Highway 65 and Old Hickory Boulevard We are accepting new neuropathy patients. Call (615)939-2787

SOPHISTICATED WEDDING

Chelsea Dugan and Drew Hill, November 12, 2021

Photos by Haley George

Love Story (Chelsea’s Version) Drew Hill and Chelsea Dugan met through a mutual friend in January of 2020. A few days after being introduced, they went to a Nashville Predators game on their first date. They realized they both enjoyed a lot of the same things here in Nashville. Covid quickly progressed their relationship and the rest is history! Chelsea and Drew were married on November 12, 2021 at Cathedral of the Incarnation. Their reception was at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, where Chelsea’s love of Taylor Swift gave event planner Bruce Pittman plenty of opportunities to flex his creative muscles. They wanted to keep the colors and style very classic and elegant while making sure the room felt very romantic and dreamy at the same time. They also wanted to add a few fun personal elements for their big day. Drew and Chelsea took several weeks’ worth of dance lessons and their first dance was to “Lover” and was one of their favorite parts of the evening. They had Taylor Swift piano music playing during the seated dinner where everyone’s table was named after a different Swift song. Their photo booth had a neon light which said “It’s 86 slmag.net

a Love Story”, bar napkins and bar signs were also customized with different Taylor Swift quotes, and exit LED wands were customized with “This night is sparkling.” Their wedding party was mostly family and a few close lifelong friends. Two of the four bridesmaids were due to give birth the week of and the week after the wedding. Fingers were crossed during planning, and the Matron of Honor gave birth on Tuesday and was in the wedding Friday, and the other gave birth a week after the wedding. They were lucky to have both of them in attendance and were great troopers! After a honeymoon at Unico 2087 Hotel in Riviera Maya, The Hills live in their newly built home in Nashville (fun fact: Drew proposed to Chelsea there in October 2020 when it was just a gravel lot!). Chelsea works for Deloitte in the US Global Accounting department and Drew is an Assistant Golf Pro at The Governor’s Club. sl Details: Bride’s Gown by Monique Lhuillier from Bride Room, Green Hills, Veil was Swarovski pearl cathedral length veil by Toni Federici from the Bride Room, Green Hills, Shoes by Manolo Blahnik, and Earrings by Chanel.

SOPHISTICATED WEDDING

Haleigh Greening and Robert Kelley, October 9, 2021

Photos by photographer

A local historic site + a young couple bring together “Good Things” for their wedding Robert and Haleigh both attended the University of Arkansas and graduated the same year, yet never met until they decided to move to Nashville. They became close watching Razorback games with mutual friends. Where it All Began was at a Dan + Shay concert, and ever since, they have been one of their favorite bands. They were married at Belle Meade Historic Site and Winery, a place very close to the groom’s family, as Robert’s father, Alton is the President of the Historic Site and his stepmother, Sheree is the CEO of the Winery. The celebration included their favorite food and cocktails: fajitas and margaritas. They also opened the on-site ice cream shop for a late-night snack for their guests! 88 slmag.net

Their 9 bridesmaids, 8 groomsmen were all a mixture of friends and family from all over the country including San Diego, Dallas, Outer Banks, Arkansas and Kansas City. Haleigh walked down the aisle to Dan + Shay and they shared their first dance to D+S. Robert works at Churchill Mortgage in Brentwood and Haleigh is an Aesthetic Nurse Practitioner at Indie Skin Care. After a “trip of a lifetime” honeymoon in Rome, Amalfi, Sorrento and Capri, the Kelleys live in their new Nashville home with their one-year-old golden retriever Tucker. sl

Joseph Martinez and Jessica Rae Waltz, November 6, 2021

91

A pair of musicians waltz through their wedding weekend Joseph and Jessi met on 12/12/2015 and were engaged exactly five years later on 12/12/2020. Both are passionate musicians, with Joseph accompanying his church worship team for 10 years in Franklin, and Jessi moonlighting with her band, The Vanity Belles at Rockwood Music Hall in NYC. Coca-Cola even signed her to tour America on a National Anthem tour and her band eventually went on tour with the Marshall Tucker Band. Their wedding was full of music and sentimental details. Their ceremony at the Scarritt Bennett Center was a tender event with Jessi smiling from ear to ear as she walked down the aisle, and when she got to the end of the aisle, glanced back at the crowd gathered and said, “you all look beautiful!”. Michael Farren, who served double duty as groomsmen and officiant, led the inspirational ceremony asking attendees to hold out their arms to support and bless their union. Bridesmaids were Joseph’s daughter Mia Martinez, Jessi’s sister, Abby Waltz (maid of honor) and Jessi’s brother’s girlfriend Heidi Stemler. Groomsmen were Robert Waltz (Jessi’s brother) and Ben McPeak (Best Man). The Gideon Brothers string quartet played modern day songs in a classical quartet style. Drama ensued as the rings “went missing” and the string quartet played the James Bond theme— enter Hudson, the Ring Bearer, with his briefcase to save the day—never once forgetting to hold his finger to his earpiece! After the ceremony, guests waited for the newlyweds outside the Scarritt Bennett Center to throw rose petals, then they were picked up from the Church in a vintage Seafoam Bentley. At the reception at Lou/Na at the Grand Hyatt Nashville, the bride and groom’s first dance song was “I Love You More, 92 slmag.net

Still” written and performed by Grammy-nominated and multiple Dove award winning singer/songwriter Michael Farren. The Father/Daughter Dance was also performed by Michael accompanied by his two adult daughters, Mykah and Madison. They sang “Wildflowers” by Tom Petty. The bride designed the food, which was a sneak peek for their guests of their Spanish honeymoon adventure, serving a beautiful spread of tapas, charcuterie and a family tradition of whole pig roast with Basque-inspired sides. Later that night, they threw an “afterparty” at the headquarters of AeroBuild. Guests danced the night away to DJ Cisco Carter but took the occasional break for a cocktail, burger (Hoss’ Burgers) and donuts compliments of the bride and groom. Sunday afternoon, they hosted their guests for a family-style brunch, with entertainment by Spanish guitarist, Leland Rooney, provided by Songbird Musicworks. Jessi’s bandmates from one of her NYC bands, the Jersey Joint, joined in for an additional impromptu acoustic performance and Joseph & Jessi closed the evening with one last performance. Joseph is a Nashville native who has worked in wealth management for the last 20 years. Jessi is the owner and proprietor of Garnish Nashville. Garnish is a private chef service specializing in events for those who want a Michelin star experience in the privacy of their home. They often spend their evenings at home in Nashville with their Golden Doodle Olivia, with Joseph at the piano and Jessi belting out vocals. sl Details: Gown by Netta BenShabu from Mira Couture Chicago; Glam by Aubrey + Carissa of Nashville; Jewelry by Genesis Diamonds & J. SYMPHONY GALA

Traditionally a white-tie gala, this year’s Symphony Ball was a full-length concert featuring world-renowned violinist Itzhak Perlman as the soloist on Beethoven’s Violin Concerto. The concert’s program also showcased the orchestra’s commitment to contemporary American repertoire, including three uniquely distinctive works: Carlos Simon’s The Block, Kenji Bunch’s Groovebox Fantasy, and Joan Tower’s Made in America, the last of which was featured on the Nashville Symphony’s GRAMMY®-winning 2007 recording. $1 million was raised this year! COCO at1OO The iconic Chanel N°5 turns 100

Written by Melissa Mahanes / Artwork by Revi Ferrer Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel came to Paris as the mistress of the textile baron Etienne Balsan in 1909 and set up a millinery boutique under Balsan’s apartment. Chanel was already a phenomenon in French fashion circles by the beginning of the twenties. She had a series of successful boutiques in Paris, Deauville, and Biarritz; she owned a villa in the south of France and drove around in her own blue Rolls Royce. She wanted to create a scent that could describe the new, modern woman she epitomized and dressed. So, during the late summer of 1920, Chanel went on holiday on the Cote d’Azur with her lover, the Grand Duke Dmitri Pavlovich. There she learned of a perfumer, a sophisticated and well-read character called Ernest Beaux who had worked for the Russian royal family and lived close by in Grasse, the center of the perfume industry. Beaux was a curious and daring craftsman and took up Chanel’s challenge. It took him several months to perfect a new fragrance, but eventually, he came up with ten samples and presented them to Chanel. They were numbered one to five and 20 to 24. She chose number five. It is rumored that the concoction was the result of a laboratory mistake. Beaux’s assistant had added a dose of aldehyde in a quantity never used before. The interesting thing about aldehydes is that one of them smells like soap, a scent that she appreciated from her childhood with a mother that was a laundress. 112 slmag.net

In keeping with Coco’s reputation for wanting the most luxurious things in life for her and her clients, it takes one ton of flowers to produce one and a half kilograms of the absolute. At the heart of N°5 is ylang-ylang harvested from Madagascar and Mayotte, Mayrose, a bloom that only flowers for three weeks a year, and jasmine from Grasse—the most luxurious raw ingredient in the world. Chanel later said, “It was what I was waiting for. A perfume like nothing else. A woman’s perfume, with the scent of a woman.” She invited Beaux and friends to a popular upmarket restaurant on the Riviera to celebrate and decided to spray the perfume around the table. Each woman that passed stopped and asked what the fragrance was and where it came from.“ “That was the first moment that anybody in public smelled Chanel N° 5, and it stopped them in their tracks. That moment consumers were smelling something they had never smelled before; it was an intervention in the history of perfume.” Joyeux anniversaire, N°5! sl Revi Ferrer, Gold Chanel No 5, 2021 (Available in 3 sizes: 20” x 28” x 30” x 40”, 40” x 50”) Limited Release HD Metal Print.
