HYPERGAMI 2022 HOK Design Futures Competition Entry

“One of the most essential motions in architecture...the fold is an incubator for change.”

Resting atop a small isle along the Skuylkill River in Philadelphia lies HyperGami, an urban winery and small business workshop sheltered under a series of hyperbolic folded planes. The project takes inspiration from the surrounding community of Manayunk’s industrious heritage, paying tribute to a history of steadfast resiliency in the face of urban blight and economic stagnancy. Underground water turbines that both generate energy from the river and help manage future unprecedented floods, in addition to a recycled wine bottle facade continue Manayunk’s legacy of industrial spirit and endurance against all odds.

2022 Schenk-Woodman Competition Entry Addressing, accommodating and activating the rich and diverse past and present histories of the Callowhill neighborhood.

Philadelphia’s Callowhill Neighborhood has experienced an immense amount of change in contexts since its establishment in the late 17thcentury. Its rich history paints a unique image as a once tavern lined district that was later transformed by the industrial revolution, shifting its context toward a labor and production-centric district. As time progressed, the Callowhill neighborhood fused with Philadelphia’s Chinatown, but the construction of the Vine Street expressway in the 60’s divided Chinatown into two separate zones, thus creating a conglomerated neighborhood that has beentargeted by many redevelopment plans ever since.

ReSurge aims to address the current standing of the neighborhood through the reactivation and deep understanding of its past cultural and economic roles. The chosen site, located at the intersection of Hamilton and N 10thstreet, can be interpreted as a representation of the multiple histories of the neighborhood. The abandoned viaduct runs above the site’s community garden, Chinatown rests just south of Hamilton Street, and many row homes and a contemporary brewery are situated within the vicinity. In an attempt to further bolster community engagement, ReSurge uses a common design language inspired by the arrangement of a circuit board to weave together the existing programmatic functions of the site.

Continuous paths run through the spaces to promote a sense of public belonging and to drive circulation to the varying destinations on the site.The designed pod structures support the local brewery, the adjacent community garden, as well as the viaduct runningabove. Each serves a specific purpose to spark the curiosities of a diverse audience. Paying tribute to the community powered produce markets that once permeated both the Callowhill neighborhood and North Chinatown, these structures feature designated eating booths, a community kiosk, and a series of multifunctional garden market spaces to activate the existing context and encourage participation in Callowhill’s unique offerings. Through these functions, ReSurge weaves a neighborhood’s cultural and industrial past with its adaptive potential for the future.

GYRATION ARCH501 PMA EXTENSION

For this project, we were encouraged to look toward elements of the city for design inspiration.

I considered ways that the differently programmed spaces could be dispersed among one another to create an optimized, integrated flow of space. These emerging images of emphasized spatial corridors, along which spaces for pause and reflection are distributed, reminds one of the reliefs in the ground produced by trolley lines throughout the city.

The frame system and the spaces it holds create a centrifugal motion around the amphitheater. This motion, expressed through the linear, sinuous language that derives inspiration from the transit rails of the city, blends from the landscape into the building to create the impression of the building emerging from the ground on an orbital path upwards. People can experience this orbital motion from the interior, or from the exterior through the ramps, tunnels, and paths that lead visitors up, down, and through the site.

FIGURE VOID ARCH501 Pavilion Project

For the city-dweller and urban migrant alike, navigating the metropolitan streetscape leaves imprints of the built environment’s geometries upon our subconscious. This series of figures tracing urban contours, and the voids between the figures, creates abstracted projections from street to mind.

Figure Void aims to transform these subconscious projections back into spatial reality, with the continuation of the linear gestures from one into another. The result is a wireframe maze with two key spatial volumes at either end, between which space flows in a continuous cycle.

The design consists of four source artifacts based on abstracted urban forms, the geometries of which produce a mixing chamber. By interlocking these objects and distilling the design until the core concept of the figure-void relationship remained, the chamber’s spaces were enabled to flow and unify.

The introduction of the secondary lines system was a means to imply surfaces and volumes within the geometry. It further brings a certain level of depth and ambiguity to the model by allowing a smaller scale to contrast the heavy massing seen in the model’s frame.
