Ruth Handler, who is also the co-founder of Mattel, founded the creation of the Barbie doll. Handler noticed that her daughter, Barbara, playing with toy dolls but would often give them adult roles. Upon this observation, Handler realised there may be a gap in this toy industry for young girls and the toys in which they are limited, and from this, Ruth’s innovative decision was to create a three-dimensional doll that epitomises the idea of empowering young girls through playing with dolls, inspiring the story and concept of Barbie as a career-oriented, independent and stylish individual and inspiring young girls that they had choices – that they could be anything.

The evolution of Barbie has changed over the six decades since it was first created. The first original Barbie doll consisted of Barbie wearing an iconic black and white striped swimsuit and signature blonde ponytail. Although, since its release in 1959, the first Barbie did cause some controversy as people criticised and commented on the appropriateness and suitability of the doll for young girls, but this was quickly overturned by the popularity that it gained and became a prominent figure within the toy industry.

Over the time Barbie has been in our lives, Barbie has gone through numerous changes to meet with the changing times and social norms. Mattel introduced a diverse array and versions of the Barbie doll, consisting of and making an integral highlight on Barbie with varying skin tones, hair types and body shapes to represent a more inclusive and diverse world, particularly through the world of young girls, creating more positive self-esteem and body positivity.
