APPRECIATION NOTE -

Translated from French to English by Sophie SAVE CALMETTE

In Nice, June 2017 Subject: Renovation and extension project for the Sestrière shelter - Sophie Save Calmette’s Thesis-Appreciation note Sir, The Mixed Syndicate of Mercantour Stations has begun studies aimed at a renovation and extension of the Sestrière refuge in the village of Saint-Dalmas-le-Selvage. After a feasibility study and pre-programming conducted in 2015-2016, the desire of the Syndicat mixte is to position the future refuge of Sestrière closer to the demand of the current «mountain» clientele while creating a new offer to allow access to a new clientele seeking authenticity and comfort. The location of the Sestrière refuge in the immediate vicinity of the core area of the Mercantour National Park poses a serious problem. The challenge is how to reconcile the construction of a tourist building responding to changing needs, in a natural environment, with the presence of a National Park while taking into account of course the natural resource available, access constraints, and obligations economic results of such an establishment. Also, the tourist positioning chosen by the Syndicat mixte is not exclusively a «classic» mountain refuge intended solely for hikers, climbers, skiers and mountaineers. The various rehabilitation programs in the Alps, recent or ongoing, are already clearly directed towards improving the level of comfort for this clientele, notably by significantly reducing the capacity of the dormitories and increasing the level of services (hot showers, quality of meals...). Besides the reception of the usual «mountain» customers , the mixed union wishes to position the future refuge on a higher level of range so as to attract a clientele «upscale» in short stay. This clientele that can be described as «ecoluxury» is in a market with strong growth still very little present in the Alpes-Maritimes. The architectural program and the future development plan must take into account these considerable challenges. Throughout the year, Miss Save Calmette was instructed as part of her final dissertation to respond as best as possible to this issue. She has been particularly active through several site visits before and during the winter period so as to grasp as much as possible the location and the environmental context of the project. On-site visits were supplemented by numerous exchanges with the project manager and the various socio-economic actors involved, demonstrating strong involvement. The brief given to us includes minimal errors in understanding the local political context and the mechanism of operation of the institutions, particularly on the role of the Mixed Syndicate of Mercantour stations in connection with the Nice Côte d’Azur Metropolis, but this confusion arises from our lack of clarity on this point and are of no consequence in the context of a preparation for the diploma of architect. Nevertheless, the work of diagnosis and inventory of the site implantation is remarkable, especially by Sophie, who did not know the massif before discovering it at the beginning of her project. The environmental and economic issues have been very well identified. In addition, Sophie has also perfectly met the expectations of the Mixed Syndicate regarding the programming proposal, according to the issues mentioned above.

Her work demonstrates her ability to listen to her sponsor and translate demand in respect to the landscape and environmental context. The proposed problem was particularly difficult, and Sophie Save Calmette showed great professionalism. Her work allowed us to guide, confirm and validate the proposals made by the consulting firm in charge of the study of definition and programming of the operation which was carried out in parallel. The implementation proposals made by Sophie are in line with the work done by the consultancy firm in charge of programming, as well as the technical and architectural recommendations. In addition, her work by the presentation of many models and a more comprehensive study of the context allowed the joint union to consolidate her project. The study provided and presented by Sophie was an undeniable asset for the Mixed Syndicate when it concerns our choices. The mixed union does not have architects, Sophie could have a role of advice and decision support through the presentation of interim reports throughout the year. Her contribution and the involvement of your school in this project, I wanted to share with you this appreciation and apologize for our absence during the thesis defense of Miss Save-Calmette, this is due to a combination of circumstances preventing us from being represented on that date and in no way lacking interest in the remarkable work done by that person. I hope that our absence will not be prejudicial in her evaluation. I beg you to believe, Sir, to the expression of my best regards. The Director of the Mixed Syndicate Mercantour resorts Mariana BONET

First YEAR : Community Center Building May / June 2011

Site : SQUARE MARIE-LOUISE - Tournai - Belgium This project was the culmination of my first year of architectural studies, and represents the synthesis of the addressed themes. Program: This exercise concerns a neighborhood we discovered during the first observational exercise of the year : The Square Mari-Louise.

The idea of the exercise: The residential association decides to construct a community building to serve two func-

tions currently missing in the neighborhood : a multipurpose association room and a preschool. The building will be open to everyone and managed by the residential association.

Contraints:

lights / materials / structure / land, water / accessibility / height beneath ceiling / parking and access / recycling

Project displayed in numerous cities in Belgium

The implantation of the facility is strategic as it aligns with two other schools in the neighborhood. Furthermore, the project is well established in its foundation, because it sinks in the ground in fonction of its purpose (the preschool is more buried than the multipurpose room). The two areas are connected by pathways, where we find the entrance of the building, and its corresponding courtyard, situated at the intersection of three roads. This project offers diverse perspectives of the potential interior and exterior of the building. All of the pathways of the square are reimagined. The pathways are more or less sunken in the ground in order to blend better with the natural elements of the square. We also see an exterior aquarium protecting the preschool from the outside world.

Third YEAR : Analysis Structure May / June 2011

Site : STADSHALL - Gent - Belgique

To take conscience of the structure of the building, while considering certain constraints, like the wind as well as the specific tensions … In this part, I analyzed the structure of the Stadshall in Gent, Belgium by Paul Robbrecht, Hilde Daem, and Marie-Josée Van Hee.

Program: Analysis of an imposed building in order to understand its structure to then put in application by the

following.

The building is principally composed of Vierendeel beams as well as “H” beams. The Vierendeel beams serve for structural support, but also for projectors during events.

Third YEAR : Collective housing September 2014 / January 2015

Site : Caserne de l’Alma - Grenoble - France Project at the urban, landscaping, and architectural level. The objective is to free up the major lines of a project making a link between the historic city center and the modern city center, and between the constructed elements and the geography.

Representation of the site with the visual and physical limits. At first glance, the site is revealed under a solid mass.

Prolongation of existing routes across the given site. I therefore established new routes.

13 Strategic implantation in order to revitalize the neighborhood and notably the isolation of the site. The site permits us to reform the entrance of Grenoble to the historic city center. Conservative diffusion of the vegetation in the project across the ramparts.

There is a desire to have a somewhat closed right exterior facade in order to create a regularity and a continuity for the entrance of Grenoble contrary to the interior facade, which is curved and open, to have different exterior spaces with different ambiances.

The first floor is composed of collective spaces (offices, common rooms, etc.) and public spaces (commercial centres, preschool and childcare services, etc.). The transversant levels are reserved uniquely for the 81 apartments, going from T2 to T5, all of which have a terrace on the interior side to create a community atmosphere between the inhabitants. This conviviality and its corresponding meetings are equally promoted by the presence of easily accessible rooftop terraces.

Third YEAR : Stringed-instrument maker’s workshop February 2015 / June 2015 Site : St Jorioz - France The site is located at the bifurcation of the main axis leading to the dike and along the redevelopment of the promenade on the lake (leading to the second major axis). This implementation aims to revitalize this place, while encouraging more people to come to create a space for meeting and discovery. The installation of equipment (museum) and additional facilities (pedestrian) for the users would be an effective answer in terms of management of the frequentation and discovery of the site. 1- Give more readability, from card to the signage 2- Promote the views of the building on the lake while trying to keep as many trees as possible.

19 The building turns towards the lake offering more or less close views with different angles such as a focal camera. Its only purpose is to be an instrument of perception of the landscape to better appropriate the site in order to escape. All views of the building converge towards the reception area. The art centre will host instrument makers who will work on the instruments. Musicians will also have the chance to stay there to revive the place and offer other opportunities. The building includes a workspace, an exhibition and reception area and an accommodation space with a dining area.

Natural and homogeneous light is important. However, the need for bright spots is very important. The stinged-instrument maker’s workshop thus benefits from a diffuse light from the north as well as a zenith light by the installation of skylights. The structure is a glued laminated wood tablecloth, 1.10m high, and 1x1m wide (between axis) which rests on a bank beam. A primary structure (in red) is set up to cross smaller distances. The building is essentially made up of wood, and the outer covering is made of corten steel. Corten steel mingles with a natural landscape, since it takes the spirit of tree trunks damaged by time. The untreated steel coating allows for natural aging and will eventually integrate among the surrounding foliage.

Master 1 : Shelter -

September 2015 / December 2015 Site : Pié Gros - La Grande Montagne - Seyne les Alpes - France

THE SHELTER = A MARK, A TAMARACK, A RUINE, A SNAIL The shelter comes to rest on the site with a slight over-elevation that allows the flow of water and snow. The volumetry is compact. It starts from a central point and unfolds, opens on this magnificent panorama. The shape of the plan is inspired by the spiral of the golden ratio and / or snail. The interior spaces radiate from the central point. As for the roof, it wraps around the core and offers the possibility of recovering water or snow in the winter. The solar panels are present on the west facade (90 °) and we can add on the South roof (35 °).

23 The structure of the shelter is made with portal truss, since they make it possible to build roofs with very different geometries. All these structures meet at the central point of the refuge. They are attached to it using a steel element or by embedding. At the end, the structure is pinched in the post. The bracing is done through floors and the presence of panels (integrating the rain screen) in the walls. All wooden building components will be prepared in batches and then transported by mule backs and by helicopter (for larger portions). The shelter becomes a simple building kit.
