I am delighted to introduce to you the collection for the exhibition The Birds and the Beasts. This is an exciting new space in which myself, Fred and Helen Gordon have come together for a collaborative, exhilarating show at the popular The Compton Gallery, Cassey Compton.

I personally have not exhibited since 2019, (pre pandemic and pre children), so cannot wait to exhibit my new work. The Exhibition brings together many new skills, techniques and new mediums I have been focusing on over the past 4 years. Combining with the inspiration from my most recent African trips and a newfound desire for capturing the energy, suspension and movement found from birds in flight. I do hope you enjoy it.

Fred Gordon - sculptor

Fred Gordon is an award winning young British sculptor, passionate about wildlife, conservation and the natural world. Born in 1993, Fred did a Name Foundation Diploma at Falmouth and has a MA Hons in History of Art and French from Edinburgh University. Having continued to produce work throughout his degree, on graduating in 2017 he immediately threw himself into creating sculpture full-time.

With minimal formal training, Fred has learnt through combined experience and total commitment. With an acute sense of observation, instinctive approach and striking ability, he captures a real sense of spirit, movement and energy in his work. Fred has travelled widely to study his subjects first hand in their natural environment, drawing his subjects from the British countryside and experiences further afield, including Sri Lanka and a three month artist residency in Limpopo, South Africa. Working directly from life, Fred sketches, photographs and where possible creates small maquette studies in front of the animals. Looking at their anatomy and behaviour, he takes this source material back to his studio to work up the pose and form in the final pieces.

Helen Gordon - sculptor

Name Helen Gordon has been interested in Art her whole life and agrees with the sentiment that the wise artist realises that they are forever a student. Compared to the greats of art history, she recognises that she is a beginner and enjoys the opportunity presented by each day that keeps the wonder alive for the artist who is willing to explore, question and reconsider.

With an acute sense of the ridiculous in any given situation, she endeavours to capture the humour in whatever piece she is working on. If a viewer stops for just one moment to view, reflect and above all smile at a piece she has created, then she feels she has succeeded in her work.

Based in Somerset, Helen has been working and honing her sculpting skills for some 20 years. She lives in the Chew Valley with her husband and has two fabulous boys, both of whom are in London with the youngest being a successful sculptor in his own right.
