ABOUT ME & ABOUT THE WORK I’m Sophie Gallandat, a recent graduate landscape designer from St Paul, Minnesota.

I am a passionate, creative, detail-oriented, driven worker, committed to life long learning and community empowerment. I am eager to work to support and uphold autonomy, agency and resilience within the landscape, while rethinking traditional design practice. I am committed to the principles of design justice and carry this throughout my work.

I love to work across different scales and with a variety of different media. I find myself drawn to aspects of both urban planning and policy and the details of landscape design. I tend to think and work in more analogue methods, as I find it helps me to creative problem solve. The last section of this portfolio illustrates a few examples of my process from projects which are not included in this portfolio, as they are complex stories to tell that would otherwise require more space and dedication than I could provide here.

CENTRAL SHOPS

FAL L 2 0 2 2 , L A 8206 SOIL & MEMORY, P R O F E S S O R B E N WALDO This project explores a site within the Sacramento Historic Railyards, in Northern California.

The Railyards are enormous, but this the site of the historic central shops is uniquely intimate within this vast industrial landscape. We were tasked with creating a holistic space of adaptive reuse, which included assigning programming to the shops and deeply considering how these spaces could reconnect and reactivate this historic, damaged, industrial landscape.

DESIGNING WITH DEGRADATION FALL 2021, LA 8773, PROFESSOR KAREN LUTSKY

This project is located on a former industrial site, where soil had been contaminated with PAH from years of petroleum pollution. We were asked to create a planting plan and CD set responding to specific site context and conditions. This former brown field site is an ideal candidate for utilizing phytoremediation techniques to speed up the process of degradation in the soil while improving the aesthetics of the site in the short term, and preparing the site for a wide range of future use.

SPRING 2021, LA 8205 , PROFESSOR VINCENT DeBRITTO This project began with a robust mapping and analysis phase, examining and interpreting the many important layers of information that inform the current conditions of the site and the wider historical, geological and hydrological context. I found the historical hydrology really compelling, in particular the two tributary streams that once ran through the area, their geometries inspiring the final design concept.

BRACKETT FIELD PARK

SPRING 2021, LA 8205 , PROFESSOR VINCENT DeBRITTO This project explores an existing park site in south Minneapolis, which, in its current state was not meeting the communities growing and changing needs. Much of the park was dedicated to baseball fields, despite no longer being of popular use. After conducting initial site surveys and visits, we launched into alternative designs for the park that would better fit the current needs of the park, increase accessibility, and usability of the space for the community.

MY CAPSTONE PROCESS NOTEBOOK ‘Experimental, Justice-Oriented, Co-Creation in Landscape Architecture’- It was critical for me to show as much of the raw process as possible for this project, as a way of questioning the way we talk about projects and their success.

PR O C E S S B OA R D SP R I N G 2 0 22 , L A 8 2 0 6 Plymouth Ave Green Workforce Campus This studio was about North Minneapolis and the Northside Green Zone, and for me, sorting through the interconnected and inseparable layers of social, environmental, economic, racial, historic and political layers implicated with a project like this, I needed a better way to sort through and connect all of the forces at play. I originally created this board in studio across a large wall, but this graphic has been digitized and cleaned up for the sake of clarity.
