Toile de Jouy

Design IV - Spring 2021

The myth of pristine nature has been perpetuated in design throughout time. During the Romantic period, there was a growing appreciation of the landscape with the “Back to Nature” movement, which came about as a reaction to the industrial revolution.

One design element depicting the Romantic zeitgeist was the printed surface pattern, Toile De Jouy. Early toile depicted idyllic bucolic scenes and woodland settings but later evolved as a medium to depict other cultural themes, such as scientific advancement and humanity’s growing dominion over the natural environment.

The design of this toile is meant to investigate our contemporary relationship with the natural environment through the lens of the Anthropocene, “the age in which human activity, for the first time, has surpassed all natural processes combined to become the source of change in the earth’s environmental systems.” Playing with scale, this toile reverses the power dynamic between the built and natural environment and depicts a world where the two are balanced and exist together in harmony.

Austin Archipelago

Advanced Studio - Fall 2022

With Lila Williams & Jade Jordan

Austin Archipelago aims to challenge the conventional design of public pools and remain in unbroken dialogue with nature. A variety of micro conditions offers guests constant access to nature within a man-made environment by distributing water, deck, and vegetation across the entire site.

This design is also a response to the hot climate of Austin. Large decks and walkways without vegetation are often too hot to walk on and tend to be avoided. Increasing access to vegetation will allow for a cooler environment and a more comfortable experience that reflects the surrounding nature of the site.

The distribution of programs throughout the site creates a fresh atmosphere and uses multiple pool programs to allow for a diverse audience of visitors and promotes community between all demographics, whether it be families, competition swimmers, the elderly, or the handicapped.

Austin Archipelago provides a public pool experience that is not only beautiful, but comfortable, safe, and accessible to all.

The Lorraine

Design VI - Spring 2022

Design Excellence Winner

The University of Texas at Austin School of Architecture Design Excellence

The Lorraine, named after seventeenth-century landscape painter Claude Lorraine, celebrates experiences of beauty and art through the lens of the picturesque. Located in the historical neighborhood of Beacon Hill, The Lorraine is a proposal for a public house, serving as an intersection between the physical characteristics of the landscape and the intangible heritage of Boston.

Drawing from Federal period design, the interior implements painterly scenic wallpaper, colorful textiles, and locally sourced stones and wood to create an ornate and eclectic space that brings in a sense of surprise and enchantment. The addition of antique furniture also enhances the unique character of the interior and reflects Boston’s historical significance in furniture making. The guests are encouraged to peruse the collections of paintings installed throughout the space or savor ever-changing local and seasonal recipes offered by the kitchen.

By inspiring a deeper understanding and relationship with Boston’s history and land, The Lorraine showcases the beauty of people’s instinctual connection to their surroundings.
