about me

Hi there! I’m Sophia, an ambitious architecture student with an eye for design and a relentless drive to make a positive impact through the built environment. I am currently immersed in my journey as an architecture student, combining creativity with technical precision. Architecture, for me, is not just a profession; it’s a way of thinking and problem-solving. I am committed to pushing boundaries, exploring new concepts, and creating spaces that resonate with functionality, sustainability, and aesthetic appeal. While my heart is in architecture, I also find joy in exploring new cafes, walking with my dogs, and diving into thought-provoking novels. If I could escape all worldly obligations, you’d find me immersed in Pinterest endlessly looking through all things aesthetic, sipping on a cup of coffee, my all time favorite drink.

01 urban junction

Arch 3170 | Architecture, Infrastructure, and The City

Spring 2024 | Partner - Olivia Aragon

Urban Junction is a project centered on the design of urban environments, approaching urban design as an integrative and pluralistic practice. It draws from architecture, landscape architecture, and planning to engage with the physical and social dimensions of the city beyond the scope of a single building, landscape, or stakeholder interest. Focused on a local site, the project examines and interprets patterns, episodes, and interrelationships within the urban environment across various scales. By employing urban design tools, it explores how interventions in built form, ecological networks, infrastructure, and public spaces can address the intersecting challenges of the climate crisis and social injustice, aiming to create resilient and equitable urban futures.

BLOCK EVOLUTION

Maps and diagrams serve as essential tools for understanding and analyzing the complex dynamics of urban sites, such as Mission Hill in Boston. By examining block sizes, tracing block changes over time, and mapping stakeholder relationships, these visual studies reveal the layers of history, spatial organization, and socio-economic forces shaping the area. For Mission Hill, mapping block size and historical shifts provided insights into patterns of urban development, while stakeholder diagrams clarified the interplay between property ownership, community use, and institutional influence.

02 walk up housing

Arch 2140 |Urban Housing | Fall 2023

In response to Boston’s pressing housing crisis, the proposed urban walkup housing project takes a strategic approach to alleviate the shortage of residential units. The primary focus lies in the effective aggregation of domestic spaces, establishing a harmonious relationship between housing and the ground plane, and integrating thoughtful landscape and urban design elements that seamlessly connect the site to its broader urban context. The Jagged Outline individualizes the balconies, and the unit is expressed, all while generating triangular patterns . Thus, spatially differentiated outdoor spaces are created. The alternating geometry of cover from the elements, acting as a natural windshield and privacy screen.

A deck access gallery grants efficiency and affordability among its many advantages. It has great potential as a social space, and it also acts as a collective balcony in contrast to the individual ones that are offered.

03 chinatown pavilion

Arch 2130 |Site, Space, and Program| Spring 2023

This Bathroom Pavilion is situated in Chinatown, near Mary Soo Hoo Park and the Chinatown gate. There is quite a lack of public bathrooms in Boston, and this building is meant to serve the inhabitants of Chinatown as well as all who need it.

chinatown research

When designing the public bathroom, I looked at the surrounding cultural icons. The Chinatown gate serves as a beautiful background for the rich cultural events that take place in the area. The iconic green and gold structure, located at the entrance of the Chinatown neighborhood, serves as a symbol of the rich cultural heritage of the town. The intricate details and vibrant colors of the gate make for a visually stunning subject, and the bustling street life of the surrounding neighborhood provides a lively backdrop for festivals and performances. All of this information contributed to my design and how I thought about the circulation.

This render series explores the works of Peter Zumthor, focusing on his use of materiality and atmosphere. The project strengthened my graphic skills and improved my ability to visually communicate architectural ideas while deepening my appreciation for thoughtful design. Projects of his included are The Therme Vals and Saint Benedict Chapel.
