THE LINE

USC THESIS 2023 INSTRUCTOR: JOHN SOUTHERN LOCATION: WILSHIRE BOULEVARD How is the architect responsible for shaping the future cities? Contemporary projects such as The Line in Saudi Arabia drive exclusivity and homogeneity. Beginning with Downtown and working its way through Koreatown, Miracle Mile, Beverly Hills, and Santa Monica, the proposed linear city along Wilshire Boulevard offers an alternative. Integrating the existing street context, building typology, and surrounding city cultures, the project creates a vibrant and heterogenic urban enviornment that is both responsive to context and sustainable. Through a catalog of parts and a revision of zoning codes along Wilshire, each exploration produces an inculsive and heterogeneic futuristic city. The compilation of parts does not represent any architectural style or aesthetic agenda and, instead, encourages the development of an organic metropolis over time.

THE OASIS

USC FALL STUDIO 2023 INSTRUCTOR: DORA CHI LOCATION: LOS ANGELES Located across from MacArthur Park along Wilshire Blvd. this project creates a public oasis while maintaining the integrity of the simplicity of the surrounding context. Beginning as one form, the building is carved away to create terraces and green spaces. The two buildings face each other on the site’s northeast and southwest corners. The two buildings bridge over Wilshire Blvd., creating a separation between site and oasis. The oasis holds many different functions: a walkable shopping environment for public on the first floor; terraces and public spaces on the roofs; and an internal landscape stepping down and connecting under the street to join the two plots. The building creates this distinction between exterior and interior through the facades. The exterior facade matches the surrounding buildings emphasizing the separation and the interior acts as an extension of the park, with wood and greenery. As such, the building provides a public space in a dense and growing part of the city.

SOCIAL JUSTICE CENTER

USC SPRING STUDIO 2022 INSTRUCTOR: JOHN SOUTHERN LOCATION: LOS ANGELES Located in Chinatown, Los Angeles this project is a social justice center for the surrounding community. Presenting itself as a simple cube, the building encases many public amenities to allow for the community to use. The exterior wood lattice doubles as a structural exoskeleton allowing for minimal interruption of the interior. The simple form of the cube allows the expanding and constrasting of the floor plates to emphasize the public and private spaces. The floor plates range from 12 feet floor to ceiling to 20 feet floor to ceiling, the most compact being the private program such as offices and conference rooms and the least compact, being the public programs such as a cafe space and collaborative work areas. The site scheme provides a public green space with many intersecting paths to allow for multiple access, while leading the public to the building’s entrance. The roof mimics the paths and gardens on the site to encourage public and community collaboration.

LACMA REDESIGN

KSA FALL STUDIO 2020 INSTRUCTOR: CURTIS ROTH LOCATION: LA BREA TAR PITS This project is in dialogue with the LACMA building by Peter Zumthor. It responds to LACMA’s form while creating its own unique form amongst the iconic attractions of Los Angeles. Visibility is the motivating design concept. On the site, the building flickers in and out of visibility as one circulates and invites one to enter the building to explore the form. The facade reflects the building’s surroundings to further blur visibility. Two additional ideas that influence building’s design: deflecting the roof and stepping the ground. The roof creates large, tall entries and compressed interiors. On the interior of the building, the views are obscured through the dipping and thickening of the roof so that vastness of the space is never fully realized. Sectioning the ground plane allows for each entry to have five platforms that eventually lead 20 feet underground. Yet, it is partial visibility that is central to major design decisions in the museum. At the institutional level, partial visibility uses archeology as thematic generator of uncovering and unveiling the natural history museum. On the site, visibility generates facade articulation. And, on the interior, partial visibility distinguishes spaces.

SARNOWSKI RESIDENCE FIRM: KEISER DESIGN GROUP POSITION: ARCHITECTURAL DESIGNER RESIDENTIAL NEW-BUILD The Sarnowski Residence is a remodel and addition to an existing house. The Sarnowski’s decided to keep the existing back of the house and were able to add a new grand living room, two-car garage, and new master suite. Working with principals Daniel Keiser and structural engineer Greg Fraker, I developed the project from schematics to construction documents.
