In the spirit of reconciliation Musica Viva In Schools acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of country throughout Australia and their connections to land, sea and community. We pay our respect to Elders past, present and emerging: people who have sung their songs, danced their dances and told their stories on these lands for thousands of generations, and we extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples today.

3

Musica Viva In Schools has been bringing high quality live music to Australian schools for more than 40 years, and is one of the leading and most trusted providers of music education in Australia. Our vision is to enhance children’s appreciation of music and boost their creativity. We do this by connecting the best Australian performers directly with schools live and online: interactive, dynamic and culturally diverse groups that perform in a wide variety of musical styles. We support teachers with the tools to teach music in their classroom, and encourage their students to discover the power of live music. Musica Viva In Schools reaches students and teachers in all corners of our nation’s states and territories, providing year-round opportunities for engagement.

Colours of Home

Taking Shape

Painting with sound

Create and compose

Colours of Home invites students into the vibrant world of oboist Celia Craig, who experiences Chromesthesia – where sound evokes an involuntary experience of colour. Celia joins forces with guitarist Caspar Hawksley to deepen students’ understanding of music through colour and mood. This exciting combination features a rich musical palette inspired by landscapes and personal connections to place, giving students the tools to create music based on their own unique worldview.

Acclaimed ensemble Topology, who move effortlessly between genres, will demystify how to create music. By teaching students to listen, generate ideas, and explore the way melodies are “shaped”, Topology will guide students and teachers through the process of composition. Each performance is unique to your school, shaped by the students themselves.

Two Wheel Time Machine

Discovering nature through music

Finding your musical balance

Walking with the Wilderness takes students on a musical discovery of nature! Combining flute, percussion and electronics, this exciting program features new music written by Australian contemporary composers and First Nations artists inspired by fungi, cicadas, birds and more! Students will deepen their connection to the natural world and use their imagination to create music for the flora and fauna all around us.

In this rock–opera, students and teachers are taken on a journey to discover that performing and creating music is just like learning to ride a bike. Inspired by the musicians’ unique musical palette of indie–rock, jazz and chamber music, schools will learn how to create through making happy accidents and lose their training wheels with simple tools to improvise.

Australians come from many different places. Iconic world music group Mara! will inspire students to listen to and understand each other by sharing music from a diverse array of cultures. Integrating music and dance, Music in my Suitcase gives students the opportunity to explore Australian history and share their own languages in the classroom and during the concert.

From spinning tops to string figures, Torres Strait ensemble Wyniss show how music, culture and history are passed on through generations. By comparing their own childhood games to those from the Torres Strait, students come to understand the importance of traditions, and to be thankful to those who teach them.

Rhythm Works

The effects of music on the everyday

Percussion and technology

Timmy is a perfectly normal school boy. But inside, he hears music in his head – all the time! In this energetic pairing of circus and music, acrobat Gareth Bjaaland (Timmy) and musicians Rachel Johnston and Trent Arkleysmith bring Timmy to life and show students how music can influence their mood and actions.

Rhythm Works are a dynamic percussion duo who show students how to create visual images through music – with lizards, waterfalls and road trains. Students are introduced to a range of instruments from African djembes to marimbas, electronic loop machines, Boomwhackers and wearable instruments made out of PVC pipe! Students are given the tools to create their own musical imagery in the classroom or at home.
