We pay our respects to their Elders past and present – people who have sung their songs, danced their dances and told their stories on these lands for thousands of generations, and who continue to do so. 3

Most of all, we welcome and celebrate the talented musicians who have entered the competition, participated in coaching sessions to prepare their performances and who have shown us, through their dedicated determination, that the future of music is alive, well and thriving in Australia.

The Musica Viva Australia Board agreed, enthusiastically adding their support to founding funder Creative Victoria and strategic partners Melbourne Recital Centre and the Australian National Academy of Music. Together, we created the first Strike A Chord in 2020. Despite the considerable disruptions we have all experienced since, the Strike A Chord team has persevered with two years of virtual events attracting hundreds of entries. Young musicians have adapted quickly to online auditions and competitions, providing evidence that musicians are resilient, innovative and determined to make music.

And here we are in 2022 as the first live Strike A Chord final takes the stage at the Melbourne Recital Centre while teachers from all over Australia gather in person nearby (or virtually) to discuss and improve their craft. This is a day to celebrate.

Musica Viva Australia exists to make extraordinary music for everyone and we are supported by a marvellous community of donors and partners who share our passion. In particular, we recognise the generous support of Creative Victoria, Monash University, Patricia H Reid Endowment, Tom Breen, Marjorie Nicholas OAM, Mercer Family Foundation, Robert Salzer Foundation, Druce Family, Morawetz Family and Yamaha Australia for their special support of Strike A Chord

STEVE DIMOPOULOS MP Minister for Creative Industries, Victoria It seems like only yesterday that, sitting with Wilma Smith one day, she said to me; “we need a high school chamber music competition!”

HYWEL SIMS CEO Musica Viva Australia

I am particularly pleased that so many regional students have participated in the Novice Section, designed to encourage musicians in the early stages of their learning journey.

I congratulate the Musica Viva Australia team, and their many collaborators, who have worked tirelessly so that this initiative could reach as many young musicians as possible.

Congratulations to the more than 400 secondary students who have taken on the challenge of becoming chamber musicians – and a shout out to their dedicated teachers too. Thank you for sharing your music with us.

Strike A Chord, like its grown up and internationally recognised relative, the Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition, is a Victorian-based program with a much wider reach – and the Andrews Labor Government is very proud to support it.

Welcome to the third Strike A Chord, the national chamber music competition. Shining a spotlight on the most outstanding secondary school musicians, the competition celebrates the achievements of students at all stages of their musical journeys. This year, finalists will come together from all over Australia to compete on the Melbourne Recital Centre stage – one of the best music venues in the country.

The Strike A Chord Teachers’ Conference is designed to build capacity in the teaching of chamber music at secondary school level. Comprising panel discussions, interactive workshops and open coaching sessions presented by prominent musicians and teachers, the 2022 conference welcomes teachers at all career stages working with a wide range of students, in a format that brings teachers together live in the beautiful facilities of the Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music at Monash University, as well as streaming to music teachers from metropolitan and regional areas all over Australia. We hope that the seeds planted in the inaugural three years of Strike A Chord will take root, and help to create a flourishing community of people who care passionately about introducing the joy and challenge of chamber music to each new generation of young musicians.

THE CHAMPIONSHIP

The brainchild of Musica Viva Australia’s Artistic Director of Competitions, Wilma Smith, Strike A Chord was created to encourage the next generation of Australian musicians to experience the life-changing possibilities of chamber music, giving students the opportunity to explore their potential and discover the joy in making music with friends, whatever their level of ability.

The COVID-19 pandemic has thrown challenge after challenge to our prospective participants and our management team with lockdowns, cancellation of school co-curricular programs, border closures, and restrictions on the number of people permitted to gather. In light of this we transitioned to virtual events in 2020 and 2021, and in 2022 we are able to realise the initial vision of a live grand final bringing participants together from all over Australia. Strike A Chord was developed by Musica Viva Australia for its 75th anniversary in 2020, underpinned by critical funding from Creative Victoria, and presented in partnership with Melbourne Recital Centre and the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM). Its future is supported by Creative Victoria, Melbourne Recital Centre and Monash University, alongside additional generous collaborators.

ERIC KIM VIOLIN Anglican Church Grammar School HAYDN LI Canterbury College LI CELLO Canterbury College DOMI Domi comes from the Latin word domus, meaning “of the home”. After multiple lockdowns and playing music online, the three decided to form an independent ensemble to extend and explore a shared love of chamber music. All members of Domi have won a multitude of awards and prizes throughout their musical careers and have been selected to take part in AYO programs over the last couple of years. Freddy studies flute with Alan Hardy. Serena learns oboe and cor anglais with Anne Gilby and also enjoys both vocal lessons and piano. Both Freddy and Serena are in year 12 and are music captains at their school. Nick who is in year 9 studies cello with Rachel Atkinson and has learnt both piano and drumkit. London Trio

Four childhood friends playing together for the first time in March this year, The IncrediBows have already won numerous eisteddfods in South East Queensland. The string quartet is coached by Adam Chalabi of the Tinalley Quartet, and Tim Li. Between the four players, they share an extensive list of accomplishments and experiences as concerto soloists, chamber musicians, scholarship recipients, prize-winners in state and international competitions, and concertmasters of Queensland Youth Orchestra ensembles. The IncrediBows enjoys exploring genres beyond the classics in the string quartet repertoire, including jazz, funk, bossa nova, and tango.

THE INCREDIBOWS

Formed in 2021 under the tutelage of Josephine Vains, the Esplanade Trio consists of three equally driven individuals. The group prides themselves on their ability to play a wide range of musical styles, their conviction and exciting stage presence, of which they have been praised for. The group are active performers in various chamber music competitions and have won several prizes, as well as having participated in the 2021 Melbourne Conservatorium Young Artist Academy program. The trio is utterly grateful to Josephine for her guidance and encouragement, and are thrilled to be selected as a 2022 Strike A Chord finalist.
