/ WELCOME

Aloha!

We are happy to join you once again for the 26th Sony Open in Hawaii. Last year’s 25th anniversary gave us the opportunity to look back over the previous years of the sponsorship, and see how much it has positively affected the Hawaiian community. We were moved by many warm comments which helped us realize how much this event is loved by the community. Over the past 25 years, we were able to support more than 350 local charities with more than 24 million dollars. We are truly thankful to Friends of Hawaii Charities and Hawaii Community Foundation, along with the State of Hawaii, the PGA TOUR, our fellow sponsors, broadcast partners, the players, volunteers, and everyone who contributes to making the Sony Open a continued success. The wildfire that hit Maui in August, was devastating news to all of us. On behalf of the entire Sony Group, I would like to express our most sincere sympathies to the victims, and the people who were affected by the wildfire. Our thoughts and prayers are with all impacted by this catastrophe. We believe that the Sony Open in Hawaii represents the strong relationship and the various collaborations we have with the people of Hawaii. While the journey to restoration may take time, with our enduring bond, everyone at Sony would like to assure our unwavering solidarity and support. We truly hope the week of the Sony Open in Hawaii being broadcasted worldwide will not only show the beautiful scenery of Hawaii, but also bring joy to golf fans, and show the strength of our bond to Hawaii and the world.

Sincerely, KENICHIRO YOSHIDA Chairman, President & CEO Sony Group Corporation

10 / WELCOME

Aloha pumehana!

A milestone worth touting was reached last January as the Sony Open in Hawaii celebrated twenty-five years of creating blessing and resources for the people of Hawaii, for our partners in Japan and around the world. The shared pursuit of Sony Group Corporation and Friends of Hawaii Charities via the Sony Open PGA TOUR competition has always been the delivery of vital support to Hawaii’s keiki, women, elderly, and impoverished. This goal, which translates into generating $1.2 million annually for this very purpose, has been strategically augmented as we move into the next chapter of the Sony Open with partner Hawaii Community Foundation. This partnership will strategically direct financial support to select beneficiaries through three-prongs of blessing: the Promising Minds Initiative directed toward at-risk keiki, the ALICE (Asset-Limited IncomeConstrained Employed) program, and through the Kūpuna Aging in Place program directed toward vulnerable seniors. With the 25th anniversary tournament, a charitable giving milestone of distributing over $24 million toward helping the vulnerable and disenfranchised among us was reached, bettering the lives of many because of the faithful and generous commitment of Sony to Hawaii’s people through the Sony Open in Hawaii. Coupled with the loyal support of Hawaii Tourism Authority, Waialae Country Club, numerous loyal sponsor partners, and over a thousand volunteers, the Friends of Hawaii Charities has been privileged to serve as tournament host and charity catalyst to fulfill our mission: To bring together financial resources from the private sector and spirited volunteerism from the community, with the extraordinary natural resources of Hawaii to produce sports and cultural events that generate funds for qualifying not-for-profit endeavors in Hawaii benefitting its women, keiki, elderly, and needy. As one of the most internationally flavored PGA TOUR events, Sony has enhanced the tournament’s distinctive flavor by presenting the Japan Golf Tour Organization and the Japan Golf Association exempt playing spots for one of their respective members. This adds an attractive dimension to the competition for the viewing audience as these “up and coming” competitors challenge the world’s best golfers at the 2024 Sony Open in Hawaii! Indeed, the women, keiki, elderly and income-constrained are the biggest winners at the Sony Open in Hawaii, because Sony and our valued sponsors have linked their arms and hearts with our great mission. Mahalo for being true friends of Hawaii charities.

12 / WELCOME

Welcome,

On behalf of the State of Hawaii, I am honored to extend a warm welcome to the distinguished participants and attendees of the 2024 Sony Open in Hawaii. It is with immense pride that we embrace the natural splendor of Hawaii as the picturesque backdrop for this esteemed golfing event. The Sony Open in Hawaii is not just a showcase of golfing prowess, but a beacon of goodwill. Since its inception in 1999, the Sony Open has generated over $24 million in charitable donations, making it the largest charity golf event in Hawaii. Partnerships with Friends of Hawaii Charities and the Hawaii Community Foundation underscore the importance of Hawaii’s support of the event's commitment to making a lasting impact in the lives of our most vulnerable. In a time of adversity, Sony's exceptional generosity to those impacted by the Lahaina fires shone through with its special contribution of $200,000 to HCF’s “Maui Strong” Fund and American Red Cross efforts, demonstrating a deep commitment to the welfare of our local communities beyond the Sony Open. I extend heartfelt gratitude to the Friends of Hawaii Charities, charity host of the Sony Open in Hawaii, as well as to partners Hawaii Community Foundation, the PGA TOUR, and the site host Waialae Country Club, for their roles in making this event a resounding success. Mahalo nui loa to the Sony Group Corporation for their enduring commitment to Hawaii, creating a legacy that transcends the realms of sport and charity by leaving an unforgettable mark on the hearts and lives of the people of Hawaii.

16 / DEFENDING CHAMPION

O

N A PICTURE-PERFECT DAY for the final round of the

Sony Open in Hawaii, Si Woo Kim approached his last dance with the fairways and greens of Waialae with the extra spring in his step of a “honeymooner.” Kim was not going it “solo,” but with the support of his new bride, Jihyun. He had been coming to compete at the Sony Open for six years — this year is his seventh Sony Open appearance, and the first as defending champion. Kim finished fourth in his 2016 debut and returned annually to the event because the experience brought him “genuine joy.” Kim uses the word “memorable” often when talking about Hawaii. The 28-year-old South Korean enjoys all the good restaurants, the plethora of shops, and being within walking distance of them all, “only adds to the charm.” “A trip to Hawaii feels like vacation, no matter how tough the competition is. That helps alleviate some of the stress that comes with tournament week,” Kim shared. “Moreover, gazing at the serene ocean has a soothing effect, allowing me to unwind and feel truly at ease.” A few very diverse developments took away more stress on the day of the final round last January. Trailing third-round leader Hayden Buckley by three shots going into the day left Kim “no time for the pressure.” He buried birdie putts outside nine feet on his first three holes to bolt to the top. He shared the lead with Buckley going to the par-3 17th hole, where Kim’s tee shot rolled through the green and stopped in a tough lie 28 feet from the hole. Behind him, he heard the crowd roar after what he knew was a Buckley birdie. Now one shot back, what came next remains Kim’s “fondest

memory” of the round — an assertive “nothing to lose” chip-in that tied it up again. “Aware of the circumstances,” Kim said later, “I gave it my all to execute the shot, and fortunately, it found the hole.” After forcing himself to be aggressive all day, he wasn’t about to back down. The chip-in left him “really comfortable” on the final hole and that didn’t change even when he found himself in a fairway bunker off the tee. Kim grabbed a 5-iron and launched it 236 yards to the green. He called that swing “unquestionably” the most important shot of his week of play that included 24 birdies. His two-putt birdie from 40 feet gave Kim his second straight 64 and a final total of 18-under 262 — crazy low numbers he attributed to carrying an extended putter, which Kim believes was “pivotal in sinking a multitude of crucial putts.” When Buckley barely missed a 12-foot birdie putt moments later, Kim had his first win in two years. Jihyun was waiting when it was over, making it that much sweeter, along with the support of cheering local fans. “Everyone was screaming on the back nine, like the Korean fans do,” Kim said, “so I think that definitely helps me, the more they cheer for me. I felt like I was in Korea.” Later, Kim would say overcoming the final-round pressure provided him a “significant boost in confidence” and elevated his performance for the rest of a season where he had four more Top 10s and finished with $5.4 million. With his fourth PGA TOUR win coming less than a month after his wedding, Kim admits he and wife Jihyun “were pleasantly surprised by our victory. While winning was fantastic, having Jihyun by my side made the experience even more special and memorable.” The unanticipated “honeymoon in paradise” for Si Woo Kim and his lovely bride Jihyun is bound to be their most “memorable” Sony Open ever!

A History of Helping Hawaii Charities BY CANDICE KRAUGHTO

T

he Sony Open in Hawaii has had a significant impact on changing lives in the islands because of the over $24 million distributed to hundreds of local charities since 1999. After nearly a quarter century of helping Hawaii’s women, youth, elderly, and impoverished, the Friends of Hawaii Charities has linked arms with Hawai‘i Community Foundation (HCF) to fulfill its mission of generating $1.2 million annually through the Sony Open in Hawaii official PGA TOUR competition held at Waialae Country Club, perpetuating the philanthropic partnership established in 1999 with long-time charity partner, The Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Foundation. In 2023, Friends of Hawaii Charities and the Hawai‘i Community Foundation mutually announced their four-year partnership to fund specific charitable programs addressing areas of critical need throughout the islands through the Sony Open in Hawaii PGA TOUR event. HCF will match $600K in funds raised by Friends of Hawaii Charities each year for four years, delivering $4.8 million in funding to Hawaii’s non-profit community. The combined funding enables Friends of Hawaii Charities to strategically amplify impact in critical areas like alleviating homelessness for asset-limited community members, providing kupuna (elderly) care, and facilitating the healthy development of children. This new partnership of aloha marks a transition for Friends of Hawaii Charities, which for over 25 years has provided numerous project-focused, modest grants

to hundreds of non-profit organizations. “The strategic plan fueling Friends of Hawaii Charities’ significant four-year partnership with HCF is rooted in a joint commitment to create generational impact,” notes Corbett A. K. Kalama, President of Friends of Hawaii Charities. We anticipate that leveraging the resources of Friends of Hawaii Charities generated through the Sony Open in Hawaii, in concert with the expertise and matching resources of Hawai‘i Community Foundation, will ultimately produce stronger outcomes for the people of Hawaii. The four-year partnership with Hawai‘i Community Foundation mirrors the commitment of Sony Group Corporation to sponsor the annual Sony Open in Hawai‘i PGA TOUR tournament at Waialae through 2026, ultimately enabling us to create waves of blessing in and through the islands’ non-profit community.” “Working with Friends of Hawaii Charities demonstrates Hawai‘i Community Foundation’s commitment to leverage collective action to find solutions toward achieving an equitable Hawaii,” said Michelle Ka‘uhane, HCF Senior Vice President and Chief Impact Officer. “This partnership will magnify the impact we’re able to have through our combined commitment to improve the well-being of Hawaii’s children, families, and kūpuna.” HCF works with non-profits that have had a relationship with FOHC and Sony in the past, connecting them with new opportunities through HCF’s community grants and initiatives.”

In 2023, the combined funding support of the partnership was specifically directed toward the following non-profit initiatives: • To help Hawaii families transition out of poverty via the ALICE Initiative • To support community-based care services for kūpuna and their caregivers via the Kūpuna Aging in Place program; and • To increase the healthy development of under-resourced children ages 0-5 via the Promising Minds Initiative “Friends of Hawaii Charities and the Hawai‘i Community Foundation share a common philanthropic perspective,” said Kalama. “To forge connections that create a better Hawaii, where people and places thrive.”

THE ALICE (ASSET LIMITED, INCOME CONSTRAINED, EMPLOYED) INITIATIVE FOCUSES ON IMPROVING SYSTEMIC SOCIAL INEQUALITIES IN HAWAII. The ALICE Initiative Cohort, managed by Aloha United Way and the Hawai‘i Community Foundation, supports 17 Hawaii-based non-profit organizations focused on helping Hawaii families out of poverty through financial literacy, workforce development and career coaching, assistance with housing, and more. A few of the ALICE Initiative Cohort awardees include longtime FOHC charity beneficiaries such as Institute for Human Services (IHS), Waikīkī Community Center, Parents and Children Together (PACT), and Family Promise of Hawaii. “Our ability to serve as many people in crises as we do, for as long as we have, is directly tied to the continued support of our community. Friends of Hawaii Charities and the Sony Open have fueled our work at Kahauiki Village from the beginning, helping us end homelessness for hundreds of keiki,” said Angie Knight, Community Relations Manager for IHS. “We can only see our partnership in mission growing more impactful with the addition of the Hawaii Community Foundation. With our mutual objective of empowering families to thrive, we will continue towards ending the cycle of homelessness for many more ohana.”

Catholic Charities Hawai‘i (CCH) will provide the Akahai E Komo Mai (Akahai), a financial wellness program designed to assist ALICE families to achieve stability and develop the skills to build a pathway out of poverty. Akahai is an innovative approach that weaves lessons in financial literacy with mental health screenings and awareness together with Native Hawaiian cultural values. Over course of three years, Akahai will aim to provide case-management financial counseling to 75 households, and connect more than 1,200 individuals to supportive resources.

CNHA’s Hawaiian Trades Academy provides workforce development for economically and socially disadvantaged communities. The goal of the program is to raise the household income of families in Hawai‘i. The academy will help ALICE households with job training, career advancement, and financial education; improve income and savings; and increase access to public benefit programs. CNHA understands the value in community-centered service and the importance of creating equity and access to living wage employment for the advancement of Native Hawaiians and all who call Hawai‘i home.

To help ALICE families stabilize, Family Promise of Hawai‘i is launching a new initiative called WAA (Working, Attaining, Achieving). The program will support financial stability and an increase in savings for ALICE families. The structure of the program is modeled after the Hawaiian outrigger canoe (wa‘a) which requires a strong and resilient lead to set the destination and tone for the journey, as well as a competent and agile crew who work closely together to reach long distance goals. The program will work with participants to co-create individualized plans to identify educational and financial goals and map out a course of action to achieve them.

The Investing in Economic Growth Program aims to increase earned income and savings for ALICE households by providing $3.5 million in loan capital to low-income entrepreneurs otherwise unable to access loans. FTHF will also provide 550 entrepreneurs with business development through one-on-one coaching, supplemented with an on-line training platform of 200+ modules. FTHF’s technical assistance to small entrepreneurs often results in decreased household expenses, increased credit scores, and better access to resources.

Goodwill’s partnership with Komohale Services will offer an array of services on-site at Komohale’s affordable rental housing to address residents’ needs to get ahead, overcome challenges, and gain greater financial independence. The program's collaborative model will include evidencebased financial literacy workshops, financial coach referrals, digital skills training, job readiness training, one-on-one counseling, goal planning, assessments, and access to community resources and VITA services. As one of Hawai‘i’s preeminent providers of employment and training services, Goodwill can identify needs, work across disciplines, and leverage multiple partners and initiatives to offer holistic wraparound services.

Hawai‘i Appleseed will support the work of the ALICE Cohort by: (1) engaging the perspectives and voices of ALICE households to inform and pursue policy change; (2) providing policy research to identify effective means of addressing economic inequity; and (3) supporting collective action to achieve systemic change. A centerpiece of this program is the launching of a cohort of up to 20 affordable housing fellows, helping develop emerging leaders from diverse backgrounds across the state who have lived-experience with housing insecurity— equipping them to engage with policymakers and influence housing policy that helps struggling working families.

Hawai‘i Children’s Action Network will work to build and strengthen the voice of ALICE families to advocate for policies and systems changes that increase household income and reduce household expenses. Key to this work will be expanding our existing efforts into a stronger Family Lived Expertise Initiative (Family LEI); building community engagement activities and platforms for involvement in policy and advocacy that is accessible to ALICE families; and integrating family voices at the center of our policy and advocacy work.

Hawai‘i HomeOwnership Center provides classes, coaching, and post-purchase services to create sustainable homeowners. Program members are primarily low-moderate income and money management, and understanding credit is the foundation of our curriculum. HHC was in the last ALICE cohort to test a Financial Capabilities Pilot program providing a two-part money management workshop and a savings match up to $350 for those who saved and submitted a budget for six consecutive months. This proposal revises the program to deliver workshop sessions through an online, self-paced course, as well providing a new type of savings account to participants (not custodial accounts).

The Economic Self-Sufficiency for ALICE households and Below project will address the need for financial counseling, income supports, and career coaching to improve the financial capacity of ALICE and below households to achieve economic self-sufficiency. This will ensure these households are able to pursue economic opportunities and move into affordable housing projects as they come online, which will in turn reduce carrying costs for developer partners and position them to build new projects more quickly. Overall, this program will lead to increased income/assets and/or reduced housing cost burdens on ALICE and below households.

IHS’ Kahauiki Village (KV) program will continue to provide affordable, permanent housing and supportive services for formerly homeless families with earned income. In addition to direct services provided by IHS’ KV staff, partner agencies and community groups provide a variety of children’s education and enrichment, family strengthening, and parent skill building activities on site. Funding will support essential KV staff positions that support the basic social services provided by the case manager by developing relationships with new partners and opening doors for participants to enter their programs, building household’s tenancy skills to improve their ability to maintain housing tenure, and connecting families with resources, services, and skill building activities needed to maintain and foster family wellness.

IMPACT AREA: Financial Stability and Savings AWARD: $100,000 per year, for three years

INPEACE helps educate ALICE households through workshops and coaching centered around personal finances. Ho‘oulu Waiwai, which translates to “to build wealth,” is a community-based program that works to improve financial stability through education. It offers culturally relevant financial workshops, counseling with trained financial coaches, and matched savings to increase the financial standing of ALICE households. The program will also organize a Community of Practice for financial capabilities practitioners to collaborate with other agencies to strengthen ALICE work.

IMPACT AREA: Safe and Affordable Housing; Financial Stability and Savings AWARD: $85,000 per year, for three years

The goal of this project is to increase economic sovereignty among KKV ALICE households by providing, through KKV and its partners, a broader and sustainable array of economic supports, including an expanded public benefits enrollment team and new (for KKV) financial, job and educational guidance services, as a standard component of KKV programming long term. KKV will also increase community participation in ALICE advocacy/policy, through documented ALICE-related talk story events and—through these and other events—identify and train ALICE household leaders/activists in Kalihi, increasing their participation in policy/leadership venues effecting ALICE households.

The program also supports collaboration with agencies involved in this ALICE cohort, to develop a cross-sector system that more efficiently supports the ALICE population.

PACT will provide immediate economic improvement for ALICE families and advocate for policy and systems changes that address the impossible financial burdens for individuals and families that are under resourced. PACT will invite and incentivize ALICE families to join Getting Ahead (GA) cohorts that will educate and support one another over 16 weeks to grow financially and in employment. Leaders from among the GA cohorts will be tapped in order to support their critical voice in community development. Concurrently, PACT will advocate in all sectors to change policies and practices that financially cripple Hawai‘i’s working poor.

PIDF’s Kupa Aina (KA) natural farming project will expand its community partnerships to provide Hawai‘i’s most at-risk/vulnerable youth with mentorship and vocational training opportunities, financial literacy education, and supplemental services to increase their independence and financial stability. KA will also donate food to ALICE households through community partnerships. In the long term, the goal is to train a new generation of farm workers who are invested in our Island community, while providing them with stable, skilled labor work, furthering our food security and sustainability. This support will cascade into better long-term outcomes for ALICE families island-wide.

Residential Youth Services & Empowerment (RYSE) provides a continuum of support for Hawai‘i’s houseless youth aged 18-24. Its new Tiny Village in Wai‘anae provides a long-term paradigm shift by providing ALICE and houseless youth with dignified spaces that are well integrated into the Hawai‘i community. This pilot model village affords youth safety and respect while resolving a larger problem by creating a concert of tiny solutions in which the disenfranchised are invited back into the fabric of society.

Waikīkī Community Center’s ALICE Asset Building and Resource Access program increases financial stability for ALICE seniors and families by creating a seamless network of support that provides the holistic services needed to address their multiple challenges, stabilize their situations, and allow them to thrive. The program will stabilize ALICE participants financially by: 1) building an emergency fund through matched savings; 2) providing financial education so participants can continue to save and access financial services and credit after the program; 3) decreasing household expenses by helping participants access public resources; and 4) addressing the holistic needs of participants through case management/resources coordination so they can stabilize their overall situations.

Promising Minds

KEIKI ARE THE FUTURE OF HAWAII, AND RESEARCH INDICATES THAT THE FIRST FEW YEARS OF A CHILD’S LIFE ARE CRITICAL TO HEALTHY BRAIN DEVELOPMENT AND EMOTIONAL CONNECTION. Infants and young children have been adversely affected when significant stressors threatened their family and care environments. The Promising Minds Initiative focuses upon increasing the healthy development of under-resourced children ages 0-5, building resilience in those who have already experienced the negative effects of trauma in their young lives. The Initiative instills a foundation for positive early childhood behavioral health, resulting in longterm benefits to individual children and families, ensuring that more children are on track for kindergarten with social, emotional, and academic readiness. Last year, funds raised by FOHC and HCF through the 2023 Sony Open in Hawaii helped support the trauma-informed early childhood field by providing training and resources to early childhood educators, social workers, and other professionals who work with young children. Funding also helped promote trauma-informed care practices, helping service providers understand how trauma affects young children so they can develop resources for trauma-informed settings.

The Hawai‘i Community Foundation is proud to partner with Friends of Hawaii Charities to support nonprofits serving Hawai‘i families, women, children, and kūpuna across the state. Philanthropy is many things—a boost for individuals in their time of need, a catalyst for change, a spark for social innovation, and a lever for reform. Hawai‘i Community Foundation (HCF) is, likewise, many things, including a resource, a partner, a convener, a funder, and an advocate. At the heart of everything we do is a commitment to deliver meaningful impact that will benefit the people and places of Hawai‘i. With over 106 years of community service, HCF is one of the leading philanthropic institutions in the state, stewarding more than 1,100 funds, established by individuals, businesses, and organizations who share our passion for a better Hawai‘i. In 2022, HCF distributed over $87 million in grants to the community from funds at HCF, contracts, and private foundations statewide, including scholarships assisting more than 1,000 Hawai‘i students. We’re proud to work with Friends of Hawaii Charities to help support communities throughout the Islands.

Infusing the “Human” into Human Resources BY ANN MILLER

FOR ALTRES, THE EXPERIENCE OF BEING A SPONSOR HAS BEEN “BEYOND MEMORABLE, CREATING MEANINGFUL CONNECTIONS IN A JOYFUL ATMOSPHERE OUTSIDE THE OFFICE THAT CELEBRATE COMMUNITY AND THE GAME WE LOVE.” BARRON GUSS President and CEO

Sony Open in Hawaii 2024

When Bill Guss began Labor Services, Inc. in 1969, his office was in Waikiki and his goal was to provide a “flexible workforce” for Oahu shipyards. If work was available, he would raise a blue flag just after sunrise so surfers on dawn patrol knew about it. Nearly 55 years later, Guss’s son Barron serves as President and CEO of what has now become ALTRES, Inc. The company’s mission remains the same: to “make business simple for Hawaii’s employers and jobseekers,” but has expanded dialog options for both parties well beyond the blue flag of yesteryear. An emphasis on infusing the “Human” into Human Resources remains a priority. A crucial element of ALTRES ethos occurs annually at the Sony Open in Hawaii hospitality venues at Waialae Country Club, steps from the beach. The 2024 Sony Open in Hawaii is the fourth year that ALTRES has served as a Hospitality Sponsor of the annual event. What began as a Cabana Sponsorship along the 18th fairway, along with supporting the Pro-Am Awards Celebration Dinner & Concert, has morphed into something bigger year after year. Company enthusiasm for, and a growing guest list of valued clients, staff, and friends convinced

ALTRES to sponsor a Skybox in 2022. That enthusiasm grew in 2023 to not one, but two Sony Open Skyboxes, where the company hosted an Employee Appreciation Day to thank their team for exceptional commitment and diligence. This year ALTRES adds yet another. There will be three Skyboxes at the 2024 Sony Open tournament as ALTRES’s commitment to community support and its initiative to cultivate lasting bonds only grows in what it now calls a “dynamic platform to foster relationships.” The team at ALTRES has jumped — year after year after year after year — at the opportunity to serve local non-profits and nurture friendships in the community. This has been enhanced by doing so in the context of enjoying world-class golf in an amazing setting. For ALTRES, the experience of being a sponsor has been “beyond memorable, creating meaningful connections in a joyful atmosphere outside the office that celebrate community and the game we love.” The team’s leadership believes the “exceptional experience embodies the essence of our values in action.” According to ALTRES, the company could not ask for more. Its values of nurturing friendships and community giving are the perfect complement to the Sony Open and charity host Friends of Hawaii Charities. The tournament raises $1.2 million annually for Hawaii’s charitable organizations that benefit women, children, the elderly, and needy. It has donated over $24 million to some 350 local not-for-profits since FOHC and Sony came together in 1998 to launch the Sony Open in Hawaii. Hawaii Community Foundation serves as partner in the charitable initiative of Friends of Hawaii Charities.

Congratulations with Gratitude When a golf tournament becomes an extraordinary force for good, it transcends the boundaries of sport, creating a positive impact that uplifts not only the players and spectators but also the entire community it serves. its legendary support of young, talented creators in the fields of technology, entertainment, and beyond, to Hawaii’s culinary community. Since then, a complement of young, talented chefs from Honolulu have continued that tradition in close collaboration with the gala venue, the Hawaii Convention Center. This year, Sony will shine the spotlight on Kajioka as the starring solo chef. “I am a 4th generation Japaneseborn in Hawaii,” said Kajioka, “I have always been fascinated by the Japanese food culture, and that was cemented during my first trip to Japan over 12 years ago. I now go up to Japan ten times a year to visit my restaurant KAJI in Kyoto. To me, Japan represents a place where great food is a birthright. The quality and pride that Japanese people have with regards to food is on another level.” “When I think of Sony, I think iconic and timeless. Both words describe the long reputation of amazing products and quality,” said Kajioka. “I want the food (for the gala dinner) to evoke my style — a fusion of my culture being Japanese, with my culinary training in various French and new American kitchens. The food should be beautiful, achieved by using high quality products, and executed with great technique — all descriptors of Sony.” Kajioka said he feels honored to have been chosen by Sony to create and cook for the 2024 Official Pro-Am Awards Gala Dinner. “I have participated in the past, but have never executed the entire dinner. I am excited to be part of an amazing event. Gambarimasu!”

f one attempted to chart this young chef’s career progression, it would likely appear that Chris Kajioka’s trajectory had already been mapped out among the culinary constellations. A graduate of Iolani High School and alum of the prestigious Culinary Institute of America, Kajioka spent several years cooking at restaurants across the U.S. mainland, including the Ritz Carlton’s Dining Room with Ron Siegal and Aziza in San Francisco, as well as for Thomas Keller’s Per Se in New York City. Then he returned home to Hawaii in 2012 to helm the kitchen at Vintage Cafe. Creating a rare and much lauded menu, Kajioka produced a culinary experience unlike any other in the islands. Within his first year at Vintage Cafe, Kajioka was nominated for the James Beard “Rising Star” Award. Food and Wine Magazine heralded him as “People’s Best New Chef,” and the fruit of his culinary brilliance earned the restaurant a place in its “Top Ten Dishes of 2013.” Since then, Kajioka has not stood still. He has pioneered several new restaurants and culinary ventures, among them Miro Kaimuki, a joint venture with acclaimed San Francisco chef Mourad Lahlou. He blessed Waikiki with Agaru, and spread his culinary aloha to Japan with KAJI Kyoto, receiving more accolades. This year, Chef Chris Kajioka returns to the Sony Open in Hawaii for a starring role — producing an exclusive menu for Sony’s VIP guests attending the Official Pro-Am Awards Gala Dinner at the Hawaii Convention Center. Title sponsor Sony, whose iconic brand is known throughout the world of electronics, entertainment, and innovation, has dedicated its gala dinner to shining a spotlight on culinary talent annually. Sony’s culinary showcase has featured internationally celebrated chefs such as Hirohisa Koyama, Nobu Matsuhisa, and Masaharu Morimoto, as well as James Beard awardwinning Hawaii chefs Alan Wong and Roy Yamaguchi, and local rising chefs to collaborate preparing dishes for the gala dinner as an ensemble. This strategy, initiated by Sony executive leadership, was an effort to extend

Mae Waite: Sketching Si Woo Kim’s Swing Hawaii-Style BY CANDICE KRAUGHTO

S

howcasing Hawaii-based artist Mae Waite, illustrator of the 2024 Sony Open in Hawaii Official Poster and Program Guide cover art, is one of many facets of Title Sponsor Sony Group Corporation’s creative media, entertainment, and technology focus incorporating local talent. Waite, an independent artist and illustrator based in Honolulu, artfully captured 2023 champion Si Woo Kim’s swing Hawaii-style. Waite says she was about three years old when she first became interested in creating art and remembers making her babysitter paint with her at the dining room table. “My parents have always been supportive of my art,” she recalls. “When I was in my junior and senior years of high school, I attended a monthly art program at the Cornish Art Institute in Seattle Washington. It was great! We had guest artists teach us their craft and I learned a variety of techniques.” Growing up all over the world, Waite’s military family was stationed in Hawaii when she was transitioning from middle school to high school. “Those were the most influential years that shaped my art, since it allowed me to grow a love for the islands,” she said. “I later graduated from high school in Washington state and found my way back here for college.” Waite earned a Bachelor of Arts in Studio Arts from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. The commissioned artist describes the process of creative imaging and design for the Sony Open in Hawaii as including several steps with some creative improvising. “I did a lot of image research of Si Woo Kim, but funny enough, in all the pre-approved reference photos either his face was covered, his eyes were obstructed, or he was in mid swing, etc. I had to loosely create a Si Woo Kim 2.0 from different photos.” Inspired by vintage travel posters and sports pictorials that illustrated an athlete in motion, Waite says that she wanted the design to be fun. “I created about five or six different sketches for review, and the one Sony selected, titled “Gust of Energy,” was the winning sketch, and one of my favorites. I also wanted to incorporate tropical themes as Hawaii is a special place. There’s so much power behind Si Woo Kim’s swing that it would have been a missed opportunity not to capture it!”

Serving with Heart BY ANN MILLER

“AS THE LARGEST CHARITY GOLF EVENT IN HAWAII, WE ARE INSPIRED BY SONY OPEN’S LONG-STANDING PARTNERSHIP WITH FRIENDS OF HAWAII CHARITIES TO GENERATE FUNDS FOR ORGANIZATIONS THAT SUPPORT WOMEN, CHILDREN, YOUTH, THE ELDERLY, AND THOSE IN NEED.” RICK CHING Former President and COO

Sony Open in Hawaii 2024

Hawaii’s largest private company has been around for more than 100 years. Servco Pacific Inc. (Servco) has served the Sony Open in Hawaii as Official Vehicle Sponsor for many years. It has no plans to leave. That might sound funny for a business that is all about mobility, but Servco has a mission closely aligned with the PGA TOUR event as well as with its heart and soul for Hawaii. Known for automotive distribution and retailing, Servco owns Toyota, Lexus, and Subaru distributorships in Hawaii. Its stature within the U.S. automotive dealer groups is also significant. In fact, it is one of the largest and within the Top 15. Servco has leveraged its stature to serve Hawaii with heart, and the company is committed to supporting organizations making positive impacts in the community. That is at the heart of Servco’s commitment to the Sony Open in Hawaii. “As the largest charity golf event in Hawaii, we are inspired by Sony Open’s long-standing partnership with Friends of Hawaii Charities to generate funds for organizations that support women, children, youth, the elderly, and those in need,” says former President and COO Rick Ching. Ching played a major role in Servco’s Sony Open partnership and retired last October after

38 years with the company. He remains, ironically, Senior Advisor of the Global Mobility Board, and appreciates the tournament’s unique assets for Hawaii. “The Sony Open is a wonderful, family-friendly event that brings out both locals and visitors,” Ching says. “As we know, Hawaii doesn’t have many professional sporting events, so this is an extra special experience for us, and the entire Hawaii community, to celebrate the PGA TOUR and host some of the world’s greatest golf professionals.” Along with providing courtesy vehicles for Pro Transportation usage, emergency evacuation contingencies, tournament operations support, and VIPs, Servco also provides forklifts for tournament use when and where needed. Servco gives the event all this support that ultimately benefits the not-for-profit community of Hawaii. This has been going on for more than 25 years. The company has also displayed vehicles in Spectator Village, sponsored giveaways, and showcased eco-friendly vehicles and sustainable furniture, charging stations, etc. Ching says his company is “humbled to play a small role” and help with “philanthropic efforts to benefit Hawaii.” “We have enjoyed seeing the Sony Open event continue to succeed and grow year after year,” he adds. “This event is a perfect opportunity to showcase international golf talent and foster connections at the beautiful Waialae Country Club course in Hawaii.” Servco’s enjoyment does not end there, or even with its executives “having a blast” playing in the Pro-Am. One of Ching’s best Sony Open memories was watching Hideki Matsuyama, sponsored by Lexus International, win the tournament competition two years ago. More great memories are on the way as they serve Hawaii with heart.

Luke Newton 2023 CHESTER KAHAPEA VOLUNTEER CHAIR OF THE YEAR BY CANDICE KRAUGHTO

Chair, Operations Group 1.

ost fans will never spot the volunteers behind-the-scenes, but their work is evident all week whether you’re watching the Sony Open in Hawaii on Golf Channel or among the gallery of fans lining the fairways and greens at Waialae. The 2023 Volunteer Chair of the Year, Luke Newton, leads the Ropes & Stakes Committee. His team has crucial “inside the ropes” responsibilities at the Sony Open in Hawaii — they plan, stake, and set up the course ropes and markers across Waialae’s 18 holes of championship turf — an arduous feat which must be completed before the PGA TOUR competition can commence. Newton previously served as Deputy Chair for the Ropes & Stakes Committee, but stepped up to the helm of the team in 2023 after longtime Volunteer Chair Cameron Barnes retired. In his professional career, Newton serves in the U.S. Navy. Every January, he takes vacation from his real job and coordinates a team of fellow active-duty military service members who volunteer for the physically demanding work involved in staking, roping, and setting up the golf course to PGA TOUR specifications so that thousands of spectators can safely and enthusiastically cheer on their favorite golf professionals from the sidelines, without interfering with the very serious competition. Newton and his team are usually first to arrive on the course during tournament week, and the last to leave at night after making changes to the rope lines or boundaries based on NBC/Golf Channel requests following each broadcast. He and his team also make adjustments during play throughout the tournament in partnership with the PGA TOUR. “I wholeheartedly believe in good karma, that’s why I volunteer,” Newton said, “I love meeting new people, and working with great people. I enjoy it! I’m going to do it until someone tells me that I can’t do it anymore.”

Frandsen has also adapted seamlessly to the change from Pro Registration to Pro Services. “Before when everything was manual, it was more of a lengthy check-in. Now we use a tablet, we give the pros a code. It’s a very simple and easy check-in for the boys.” “As a Club member, Kuniko brings much needed institutional knowledge of Waialae Country Club to our team, which is a huge help to all of us,” said Pro Services Committee Chair Lillian Langeslay, who nominated Frandsen for the honor. “Her bilingual English and Japanese skills have been extremely helpful when dealing with the many golfers and guests who attend the tournament. Best of all, working with Kuniko is a joy!”

BEARING THE STANDARD Inside the Ropes with PGA TOUR Pros BY ANN MILLER

H

ow does the gallery know which golfers are playing in every group and what they’re scoring at the annual Sony Open in Hawaii? That information is carried to spectators up and down the 18 fairways of Waialae throughout tournament week via gallant Standard Bearers. These men and women volunteer for a role that is far more physically demanding than most for the event, hefting a mini scoreboard aloft for hours in heat, wind, rain, or through whatever weather appears. What is the allure for these volunteers in the face of challenges? These special volunteers get access to the pros and action inside the ropes. There isn’t a better seat in the “house” for an up-close view of the finest golfers on the planet, playing a game most of them love. What else matters? “I love the whole aspect of the job or I wouldn’t keep coming back,” said Kane Kalili, a 2022 Kamehameha Schools - Kapalama graduate. “The family aspect and the people you get to meet keep the atmosphere amazing even when the golf isn’t going on, and to be inside the ropes with the pros to see quality golf is exciting.” Kalili first volunteered at age 14. This will be his sixth year serving as a Standard Bearer. He is currently pursuing a degree in PGA Golf Management at New Mexico State University. His goal is to be a head golf pro, “after some years of giving back to my communities.”

PHYSICALLY DEMANDING, VOLUNTEERS WALK 18 HOLES CARRYING A STANDARD (AT LEAST 6-10 POUNDS) FOR AN ENTIRE ROUND AND MUST BE KNOWLEDGEABLE ABOUT GOLF ETIQUETTE.

Keith Yamaguchi is serving his 20th year as a volunteer. He was “on the Standard” when Justin Thomas fired his magical 59 at the 2017 Sony Open. He has an autographed “59” golf ball from JT to prove it! Another highlight for Yamaguchi came in 2010, when he and his wife worked together with pro Jason Day. “Meeting and talking with the PGA TOUR golfers, their caddies, and the other volunteers” is why Yamaguchi keeps coming back to serve. That, and being closer than pretty much anyone else to guys usually only seen on TV. “It is very exciting being inside the ropes watching the best golfers in the world play great golf,” said Yamaguchi. Bill Carney has been “carrying the score” for 13 years now. He used to live in Hawaii Kai, but has moved to Indiana to be near his grandkids. He returns to the Sony Open every year because “there’s so much I love about it.” For Carney, it starts with Chris Urabe, the volunteer committee chair of Standard Bearers. He also loves talking story at “appropriate times” with the competing golfers and their caddies. He calls it “the stuff memories are made of.” So far, his top three memories include: working with Sam Saunders and hearing stories about his grandfather, Arnold Palmer; working in the group in front of Justin Thomas — and Yamaguchi — the day of the 59; and working many times with Matt Kuchar whom he describes as “such a talker and so much fun to work with. He’s one of the best.” Standard Bearers usually follow their groups all 18 holes, updating their scores and assisting the walking scorers. They keep the “mini scoreboards,” (which weigh almost 10 pounds) high enough for everyone to see, and help spectators with questions. All that can be tough on a good day. Throw in rain, wind, and hot sun, and ... well, none of that seems to deter those carrying this heavy load. Kalili doesn’t plan on stopping his volunteer service as a Standard Bearer anytime soon. “It’s as much fun as it is important, and as a golfer it’s just plain exciting to see,” he says of watching PGA TOUR players up close. “To try and do some things they do and learn from the best is the reason I play this game.”

A WINNING EXPERIENCE The Waipahu HS Partnership BY CANDICE KRAUGHTO

Sony Open in Hawaii 2024

I

ve been looking forward to the Sony Open in Hawaii! No other school has big opportunities like Waipahu High School,” said Lathan Guzman, a junior and Co-President of the school’s Marauder Media video arts program. Guzman, who hopes to have a future career in creative media or videography, is among the several Waipahu students volunteering their services and time at the 2024 Sony Open in Hawaii to gain hands-on practice and experience in their specific course of studies. Waipahu High School’s motto is “My Voice, My Choice, My Future,” and is “a nationally recognized wall-to-wall career academy high school, which encompasses six nationally-certified model academies,” said Principal Zachary Sheets. “These academies offer a thematic course of study that each freshman student can select in order to focus on their personal area of interest, whether it be Arts & Communication, Health & Sciences, Natural Resources, Industrial & Engineering Technology, Professional & Public Services, or Ohana of Excellence.” A win-win partnership for both Waipahu High School and the Sony Open in Hawaii, this annual educational alliance was presented to tournament management by local educator and long-time tournament volunteer, Kel Hirohata, Assistant Principal of the school’s Academy of Health & Sciences. Hirohata began personally volunteering at the Sony Open in 2008, providing sponsor support for Spectator Village. Six years later he became Volunteer Chair of the Keiki Care Committee.

After his first year leading the Keiki Care committee, Hirohata recruited his Teacher Cadet students and another instructor to volunteer at the Sony Open in Hawaii as part of a work-based learning experience. Since 2015, each group of Teacher Cadet students have been assigned the important responsibility of providing childcare support for the keiki (children) of PGA TOUR pros while their parents are at Waialae for the tournament. The Waipahu students are trained and mentored by PGA TOUR staff members regarding childcare safety and security procedures. Rotating their support over three-day shifts, these young Keiki Care volunteers typically help bring in mats, toys, and playground equipment, play and read with the kids, direct sing-alongs, supervise them in the pool and bouncy house, and escort older children on field trips. Senior Hailey Fleming is volunteering for the second year in Keiki Care. She hopes to study pediatric dentistry or public policy after graduation. “I liked the experience, being able to work with kids and even talking to other volunteers,” Fleming said. “I’m really good with kids and helped with babies from 10-monthsold up to 2 and 3-year-old toddlers.” Senior Angel Borja was able to use her Korean language skills during her Keiki Care volunteer shifts last year. “I saw a few kids struggling to communicate with the teachers,” Borja said. “I was proud of myself that I was able to help them through my Korean language skill while provide a community service, and also to have had the experience of communicating not only with adults, but also with the keiki.” She hopes to study Nursing, Physical Therapy, or become an X-ray technician in the future. In 2020, Assistant Principal Hirohata expanded the off-campus learning opportunities by recruiting the school’s student-run Marauder Media to volunteer in the Sony Open Media Center. Pulling daily double-duty shifts, Hirohata tirelessly made multiple trips between Waipahu and Waialae to shuttle students who were volunteering in both Keiki Care and at the Sony Open Media Center. His efforts did

SonyOpeninHawaii.com

not go unnoticed, and he was honored as the 2020 Sony Open Volunteer Chair of the Year for inspiring and implementing the tournament’s unique partnership with Waipahu High School for not only one, but two volunteer committees. At the 2023 Sony Open in Hawaii, Waipahu’s Fine Arts and Media Arts instructors, Dr. Bryant Murakami and Scott Alquisa, stepped up to shoulder responsibilities for shuttling and supervising Marauder Media students in the Sony Open Media Center. The Marauder Media students were given the stature of credentialed media and produced several professional quality video stories featuring Sony celebrities, Birdies for the Brave military caddies, tournament volunteers, PGA TOUR pros, and more, which were posted on Sony Open social media channels. One of these videos garnered over 17,000 views within three days. Waipahu senior Shaniah Josiah, who hopes to have a career in the film or arts industry, is volunteering for her 2nd year at the Sony Open Media Center. Shooting and editing a video story about the Birdies for the Brave Patriot’s Outpost sponsored by Pasha Hawaii was her favorite assignment last year. “I got to talk to the families in the military tent. It was heart-touching, learning their stories and seeing these service members and their family members express themselves,” she said. “Something I struggle with is talking to others, and this is a way I can grow my communication skills.” Waipahu students even shot B-roll video footage that one of the local TV network affiliates ran in their evening broadcast. Another station, Hawaii News Now, featured the Marauder Media students diligently working from the Media Center. “Our students are provided with valuable experience at the Sony Open as they work side by side with industry professionals,” said Dr. Murakami. “While filming out on the course, they often have the chance to shadow members of the local media and we are really grateful for the opportunity to learn from them and foster those mentorships.” “I really loved the experience, got to use a camera and leave school campus to do what I love to do,” said Calla Cheung, sophomore Co-President of Marauder Media. “I was a freshman last year, so I didn’t have as much experience. It opened my eyes to a whole world of interviewing and editing against a deadline. These important skills can be transferable to my future career.” These students say they consider themselves lucky to be attending Waipahu High School and to have opportunities to participate in the Keiki Care and Media Center experiences at the state’s most prestigious PGA TOUR event. Hirohata sums it up this way, “I believe when people see how our Teacher Cadet students interact with the PGA TOUR pros’ keiki, and the valuable experience the Marauder Media students are acquiring while creating value for the charity initiative of the Sony Open in Hawaii, how can you not support the students?”

94 / SUSTAINABILITY

Sustainability at the Sony Open in Hawaii Since 1999, sustainability and green initiatives have been incorporated into the planning, management, and operation of the Sony Open in Hawaii. As a community-wide charity event, the Sony Open demonstrates how environmental stewardship values can be practically implemented, showcasing initiatives that educate and raise awareness among event attendees and the local community. When a high-profile, international event takes an active role regarding the importance of reducing its environmental footprint to protect, conserve, and minimize adverse impacts on Hawaii’s natural environment and resources, theory is transformed into practice. In this way we carry out the islands’ ethos preserved in the State of Hawaii motto, “Ua Mau ke Ea o ka ‘Āina i ka Pono,” commonly translated, “The life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness.” In recognition of the sustainable practices incorporated into the Sony Open, the event has been awarded Hawaii Green Business honors since 2016.
