A message from our president Our Guild meeting for October is jam-packed with events. We will be marking our 22nd birthday with treats, elections, installation of the 2014 board, recognition of volunteers and membership renewals. We also will be announcing the winners of our knitting contest with a display of projects and ribbons.

Since there were no nominations from the floor last month, the Guild membership will vote either “yes” or “no” on the slate presented at the September meeting. That will be followed by the installation of the board.

After the elections, I would like to take some time to recognize the 2013 board and their hard work. The Guild has been very busy this year and a lot of work goes on behind the scenes to make things happen from programs, publications and events. I also would like you to think about how you can contribute to the Guild (big or small) in time and energy to make next year as successful as this year.

Throughout the meeting, Beverly will be accepting membership forms and dues.

We would like to have EVERYBODY fill out a membership form so that our roster can be completely scrubbed and updated. An enrollment form is enclosed with this newsletter.

Finally, we will reveal the winners of our knitting contest and Best in Show, who was … . You’ll have to come to the meeting to find out.

Back by popular demand is the Guild’s annual Knitting-by-the-Sea Retreat. We received such positive feedback from our first retreat last March that we have decided to have a 2014 retreat. The dates for the retreat will be Thursday through Sunday, March 6-9, at the Hampton Inn in Corolla, N.C. The agenda will be basically the same as last year, with improvements based on the input we received from participants. Thursday will be an open day, with formal activities beginning Friday evening. The Hampton Inn is offering us the same room rate as last year, which was $89 per night, plus taxes.

In order to move forward with the retreat plans, I need a committee to do the planning and knitters interested in teaching that weekend to submit class ideas. If you are interested in working on the planning committee, let me know pronto (hendersonjb@cox.net). Those interested in teaching need to submit your idea with a class description and the committee will make the selections. At the present time there is no theme for the retreat other than we will be “knitting by the sea.”

Join me for a wine tasting, small plates, knitting and great conversation at The Mermaid Winery on 22nd Street in Ghent on Thursday, Oct. 3, from 6-8 p.m. Bring your latest project(s) to share and get inspired by the work of others. The $20 cost includes five wine samplings (the equivalent of one glass), small plates and gratuity. Yarn Tastings with a Twist.

Every four weeks there will be four-five new fibers on needles with which to knit. This will allow you to experience how they knit and give you an opportunity to see how they work up. On the table now are: Noro Cyochin: 86 percent wool, 7 percent mohair, 7 percent silk. 198 yds, 4.5 stitches per inch, size 8 needle.

Mirasol Nuna: 40 percent wool, 40 percent silk, 20 percent bamboo viscose. 191 yds per 50 gr, 6 stitches per inch, size 5 needle.

Cascade Eco Duo: 70 percent undyed baby alpaca, 30 percent undyed merino wool. 100 gr, 197 yds, 18 stitches per 4 inches, size 8 needle.

Cascade Casablanca: 59 percent wool, 24 percent silk, 17 percent mohair, 220 yds, 100 grams, 18 stitches per 4 inches, size 8 needle.

Time to start holiday charity knitting

Guild member Jackie Scott told us about her church who is feeding the needy. Her church will do this the week before Thanksgiving, and the church would like to give each person a scarf. So, we are asking that you knit or crochet a scarf, or two, and bring them to the October and November meetings. It doesn’t have to be elaborate. I’ve started one with some charity yarn that I received at one of our Guild meetings. I cast on 17 stitches on a #17 needle and am just doing a garter stitch (knit both sides). It’s going quickly.

As you know, this year our December holiday meeting will be held at St. Mary’s Home, 6171 Kempsville Circle in Norfolk. Now is the time to start your knitting and crocheting. St. Mary’s would like hats (child and adult sizes), lap blankets, slippers. Just like last year, you can purchase items to donate. Here are some examples: CRAFT SUPPLIES: Photo albums and paper, scrapbook paper and stickers, large markers, construction paper, washable paint, poster board, cotton balls, brown paper bags, wiggle eyes, glue sticks and dots, sticky-back foam sheets, glitter or any assortment of supplies GIFT CARDS: A.C. Moore, AMF Bowling, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Bath and Body Works, Build-A-Bear Workshop, Cinema Cafe, Claire’s, iTunes, JC Penney, Kohl’s, Michael’s, Target, Wal-Mart, various malls and restaurants Please bring your items to be donated locally to the next meeting and we’ll see that they are distributed. If you have items that you have given to an out-of-town charity, you should notate that on the charity log. Sam’s Scarves to help keep more people warm

This year, we are extending the scarf program organized by St. Andrew’s Church in West Ghent in Norfolk to reach more individuals earlier in the cold season. Our goal is to pass out 130 scarves to the guests of the Catholic Workers Sandwich line on the Saturday that our church sandwiches are distributed, Nov. 23. Since we have about 25 scarves left over from our Norfolk Emergency Shelter Team (NEST) program, we have a little bit of a head start.

Whether you are an expert or a beginning knitter, knitting a scarf is as simple as doing a knit stitch from beginning to end. The scarves should be at least four feet long and made of dark yarn that is washable. Scarves may be deposited in a shopping bag which will be put out in front of the church office. So get out your needles and hooks and pass the word to your friends. Deadline for getting the scarves to the church is Nov. 10. I will deliver any scarves that I receive by the November meeting.

The Yarn Club Challenge is off to a great start! Please come into the shop and vote for your favorite cowl from September’s Challenge. By voting, you are entered into our Voter’s Raffle and are eligible to win another fun prize. October’s challenge features the Zoom Loom. Get extra points this month if you use this awesome little invention to get rid of all those scraps and stash yarn. Make scarves, shawls, home items, dolls and more. Anzula has delighted us with their delicate yarns and soft color pallet. Oasis, a light worsted weight yarn, which is 70 percent silk and 30 percent camel, has become a big hit. It is perfect for sweaters or accessories. Our next gift from the beautiful minds at Anzula is Cloud. At 575 yards per skein, and with a touch of cashmere, it’s perfect for those holiday projects we’ve all started thinking about. And last, but certainly not least, is our Mermaid. The name alludes to its unique fiber content, 60 percent seacell and 40 percent silk.This yarn is a dream to work with and makes a beautiful Mermaid Shawl, http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/mermaid-shawl-4.

The Stitch Doctor is in! We have opened up more Help 240 Mustang Trail Clinic hours. Bring your TYC project in on Mondays, WednesSuite 8 Virginia Beach, VA 23452 days and some Saturdays from 9a.m.-10 a.m. for some one-onone support.

TKGV PROPOSED MEETING MINUTES 9/2/13 The president opened the September 2013 meeting at 7:15 p.m. with our welcome chairperson introducing our visitor.

The president extended birthday wishes to Guild members celebrating September birthdays.

The president announced the Chesapeake Waterways Festival is Saturday, Oct.12, and Sunday, Oct.13. Sign-up sheets are available at the October meeting to volunteer for the Guild’s booth.

The August 2013 meeting minutes were approved.

The secretary presented the following slate of candidates for the 2014 TKGV Board: The treasurer reported the Guild’s balance as of this meeting is President: Debbie Henderson $4,374.90 and noted at least one bill is pending receipt.

Vice President: Lora Marin Secretary: Debbie Goodman The vice president confirmed Nancy Shroyer will teach two Treasurer: Beverly Boler classes on Saturday, Nov. 2, 2013. The class topics are “Dealing with Color” and “Fair Isle and Intarsia Knitting.” In addition, The secretary requested nominations from the floor. Having Ms. Shroyer will teach a class on drop spindle on Sunday, Nov. received no nominations, the 2014 TKGV Board of Directors 3, 2013. The class fee for Guild members is $35 per class. The October program will have the 2014 TKGV Board of Directors election, the installation of officers, the Guild’s anniversary celebration and the presentation of the 2013 TKGV Knitting Contest winners.

Baa Baa Sheep: has celebrated its first year anniversary. Roz thanked the Guild for participation in the shop’s August shawl contest. She received glowing reviews of the shawl display. Roz announced the shawl contest and anniversary drawing winners. There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 8:35 p.m.

The Knitting Corner: will close on Sept. 28, 2013. All items, Respectfully submitted, including fixtures, are on sale.

Have some tea and knit for charity

I will be hosting a charity knit-in tea party on Nov. 10 from 1-5 p.m. at my house. The focus will be hats, slippers, lap blankets and other items for residents of St. Mary’s Home, and scarves for Jackie Scott’s church’s homeless project.

There will be some yarn and patterns available for the projects but you need to bring your own needles ranging in size 8–11. If you have a project you are already working on, bring it. Along with your knitting, bring your favorite snack and/or tea to share with the group.

Sign up to take part in Chesapeake waterways festival

The annual Chesapeake Waterways Heritage Festival is Oct. 12-13 at Great Bridge Locks Park, and the Guild has been invited to set up an exhibit and information booth. The festival celebrates Chesapeake’s historical waterways cultural heritage, showcasing the crafts, skills and trades that help establish and make this region unique. The fest is a family friendly event with something of interest for everyone.

Sign up at the October meeting to come sit, knit and chat with others knitters, craftsmen and the public for a few hours or a day. It definitely is one of my favorite events to participate in the year.

The Knitting Corner closed on Sept. 28. Sue is still available for private lessons, blocking, finishing and consultations for all types of needlework and crafts. Future classes and workshops will be posted here. Contact Sue at 403-1277 with any questions.
