A message from our president I did not think I would ever get my Roman stripes done on my Sandy shawl, but I did and I am hoping to have the shawl done by the June meeting. I know some of you have already finished and shown your shawls, but bring them to the June meeting along with anyone else who has finished so we can do a group show and tell. As if one shawl was not enough, I am also picking yarn for my next Sandy shawl for my sister whose name is, you guessed it, Sandy.

Is everybody ready for the TKGV Scavenger Hunt on June 1? I have already informed my family that I will not be available to them for ANYTHING that Saturday (to include dinner) but I am not sure the dogs got the message. My strategy is to get to the shops, answer the questions and knit before I am totally distracted by yarn. It is going to be a long, wonderful day. Yeah! (continued on page 2)

President’s message, continued from page 1 The Yarn Club is sponsoring another great opportunity to knit in public with a booth at the Town Center in Virginia Beach on June 15, from 3-6 p.m. Bring a chair and a cool drink, and join Rusty for a few hours of relaxing knit time.

Our final KIP activity will be a Tides game on June 29 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $11 and I will need the money by the June meeting if you want to sit with the Guild. Your families are welcome to come, too. In fact, I depend on mine to watch for any fly balls coming my way and sacrifice themselves to save the knitting.

Summer is almost here and before you know it, it will be September and time to turn in your knitting contest entries. If you haven’t started or even thought of a project, now would be a good time. Information about the contest is on Ravelry and has been in our newsletter, which is on Facebook. Hard-copy rules and registration forms are available at the Guild meetings.

I just glanced out my window and noticed dirt and plants flying in the air. Apparently, I forgot to close my garden gate and the Sandy shawl namesake is “plowing up” one of my boxes. That is my cue to end this letter.

Make knitting in public an adventure: Go on a scavenger hunt at our LYS’s

Join the Guild for the first KIP & LYS Scavenger Hunt on Saturday, June 1. You will have the opportunity to test your LYS shopping endurance!

What is the TKGV KIP & LYS Scavenger Hunt? It is the Tidewater Knitting Guild of Virginia's Knit in Public and Local Yarn Store Scavenger Hunt. You can start at the breakfast kick-off (see below) or at one of the four participating local yarn stores (see below). You can visit as many of the participating local yarn stores as you want and your time and shopping endurance allows. You will earn points for: 1. every participating LYS you visit 2. every 30-minute increment of Knitting in Public completed at participating LYS's 3. every correct Scavenger Hunt answer.

We will collect your point information at the Guild meeting on Monday, June 3. The three Guild members who earn the highest number of points earn prizes and confirm they have true LYS shopping endurance!

The breakfast kick-off will start at 9:15 a.m. at Panera's Cafe at Virginia Beach Blvd. and Constitution Avenue in Virginia Beach. You can obtain your "passport" you will use to track points and answer scavenger hunt questions.

The four participating LYS's are: Baa-Baa Sheep, KnitWits, The Knitting Corner and The Yarn Club. You can obtain your "passport" at any of these shops, if you prefer to start your adventure at one of these shops.

Suggested supplies for the scavenger hunt: 1. portable chair for KIP'ping 2. pen to write down answers 3. local map (Norfolk and Virginia Beach), or GPS, or internet map prints for the shops you will visit 4. portable knitting project If you have any questions, please contact Katie Gerwien at khgknits@cox.net.

WWKIP Day, June 15, 3-6 p.m. at Towne Center Fountain (in front of Bravo’s): Join Rusty and Hazel for a fun-filled afternoon of fiber and yarn. Virginia Beach is hosting a Crafter’s Day and we have all been invited to share our craft. Spinners are welcome to bring their wheels.

New yarns continue to roll in. The Yarn Club has the newest creations from Pagewood Farms as well as their fabulous Denali Sock yarn. I love the new ribbon with felted flowers!

Rowan introduced their first hand-dyed yarn in a beautiful fingering wool/mohair/silk and nylon blend, for socks and more.

Any yarn with the Rowan name is sure to be a work of fine art. This one delivers in every colorway.

There is a new indie dyer in the house. Gorgeous sock yarn, breathtaking merino/cashmere/nylon blends, scrumptious sport weight in merino/cashmere/silk and a wonderful DK 100 percent superwash that will blow you away. The colors are dreamy and the fibers delightful. Oh, yeah! We also have roving coming in from our new supplier. Oops, I forgot to say who it is …

Charity knitting: Thank you

Thanks to all who took home some of the charity yarn that I brought to our meeting. I’ll be bringing some each month for you to use. If you are knitting blankets for the Navy Marine Corp Relief Society, please remember to enclose the form with your blanket with your name on it. It would be greatly appreciated if you returned the blanket in a plastic bag.

To date, we have 20 members who have knitted charity items which were donated to 16 different organizations.

When you are looking for a project to start and/or trying to figure out what to do with your scraps of yarn, here’s a recap of the local organizations asking for knitted/crocheted items: Pet blankets – Virginia Beach and Norfolk animal shelters Baby blankets – Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society 8” squares – Hugs from the Heart (hospice patients)

Hats and scarves for Veterans – American Red Cross Caps/blankets for kids – St. Mary’s Home, Project Linus, Newborns in Need

We always welcome all of your knitted/crocheted items that you record on our charity log and donate every month for us to distribute, and we commend all of your efforts to make and donate items using skills other than knitting.

However, in the future, since we are a knitting guild, we will only accept and record those items that are knitted or crocheted.

Bring your items to be donated locally to the next meeting and we’ll see that they are distributed. Remember to sign the charity knitting log each month when you attend our meetings or email me at chrisgoudeau64@gmail.com.

TKGV PROPOSED MEETING MINUTES 5/6/13 The president opened the May 2013 meeting at 7:15 p.m. and extended birthday greetings for TKGV members celebrating May birthdays. The president welcomed our guests.

Following a review of the Fiber Kentucky Derby Hats, a winner, Sue Von Ohlsen was declared for wearing the hat that best represented fiber arts and the Kentucky Derby theme.

The Guild enjoyed the show and tell.

The Yarn Club: has two trunk shows now, one from Scrumptious Yarns and one from “November Knits." On 6/15, There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 8:45 p.m.

The Yarn Club will host a Knit in Public event at the Virginia Beach Town Center.
