Introduction THE PORTFOLIO THIS PORTFOLIO CALLED SPROUTED SEED; IT IS PORTFOLIO AFTER I CAME TO THE UK; THE REASON FOR CHOOSING THESE PROJECTS IS THAT I WANT TO SHOW YOU MY CURRENT SITUATION.THESE WORKS ARE DONE ACCORDING TO THE BRIEF GIVEN BY THE SCHOOL, I WILL EXPLAIN IN THE FOLLOWING INTRODUCTION.BESIDES, PROJECTS ARE DISPLAYED IN REVERSE CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER

CONTENTS I have summarized the third page of the catalog into three large series (as shown on the left). The first project is called starting point, it is an open topic. I can choose any theme I want to do, and it is a big project. I complete it in half a semester,so I chose to make a book. Because the process of making a book is trivial, I try to describe the process in chronological order. The most important thing to note is that because the book's outcome and portfolio sizes are different; please open the link to see the final outcome. The second project is called London is open. This project is a competition, with the theme of LONDON IS OPEN, to shows London’s multiculturalism and tolerance city. I made a series of advertising posters in this project. The third project consists of four small projects that are designed to allow us to be freshmen in the field of illustrations, to think more professionally, and to give us the opportunity to use a variety of media to find what we really want to do. These projects are semi-proposition projects, each project is about 3 weeks in length, I create according to the given brief (I will introduce the brief of each project). These four projects basically include the following: 1. the first three ideas (tutor requires three ideas for each project to ensure that there is an alternative when a project does not go down) 2. Select one of the ideas to create 3.introduction 4.process 5.reflection 6.final outcome 7.the detail of outcome 5

STARTING POINT DETERMINING THE THEME AND RESEARCH OBJECT OF PAINTINGS STARTING POINT Starting point is an open project. I spent a long time to choose a theme. I want to create some works with helpful significance, rather than works just easy on the eyes. So firstly, I determined the range on existing social issues, including ecological environment and animal extinction. In this stage, I watched lots of movie and video materials, such as Louie Psihoyos’ The Cove, Yann Arthus-Bertrand’s Home: The Story of a Journey, Jacques Perrin, Jacques Cluzaud and Michel Debats’ The Travelling BirdsShuyuanLiang’s X-change Season 9, Chai Jing’s ‘Under The Dome’(a documentary about China’s pollution) and other short films. At last, I chose left-behind children as my research object, for I found this theme was relatively easier and the most touching to me. After determined the research object, I detailed the theme: helping the left-behine children to overcome their fear of the dark. This idea was inspired by X-change Season 9. The leading character of this documentary is a left-behind boy who lives alone at a very early age. In the night, he can only release his fear by singing. I wish I can make a book for leftbehine children like him.

THIS IS A VERY INTERESTING CHALLENGE BECAUSE IT IS MY FIRST TIME TO WRITE A STORY AND ILLUSTRATE IT. I HOPE TO FILL GAPS IN THESE AREAS. IN ORDER TO BE ABLE TO MAKE THE WORK BEFORE THE DEADLINE, THE REASONABLE PLANNING TIME IS OBVIOUSLY NECESSARY.

Because most of left-behind children live in rural areas (which means the computer are not yet common), I chose book as the medium. The dissemination of book is more directly than internet. The project is a challenge to me, for I never made a book before. To finish it before the deadline, I made a plan. PICTURE the illustration picture from the book which I made

PLAN: THE PICTURE ON THE RIGHT DISPLAYED THE PROCESS OF MAKING THE BOOK. I FINISHED A SMALL GOAL IN EACH TWO WEEKS AND DIVIDED TIME IN A PROPORTION OF 6:3:2. 6 MEANS I SPENT MOST OF TIME ON STORY RESEARCH AND MATERIAL PREPARATION. 3 IS THE TIME I SPENT ON PAINTING. 2 IS THE TIME ON FOLLOW-UP ADJUSTMENT WORKS LIKE SELECTING FONT AND DEFINING DETAILS.

Investigation: I want to know the reason why children are fear of dark. According to Jean William Fritz Piaget's Animism, children have an anxious psychology at the age of 2-4. Futhermore, I conducted a survey to my friends and children around me. I collected a mass of data to conceive the story. I made some records as shown in figure 1. Many children are afraid of looking under the bed or behind the door, wolf, going to the toilet by themselves....Based on these findings, I tried to make these places not that horrible via my story and paintings.

ANALYSIS: LEFT-BEHIND CHILDREN‘S LIVES

Before I started writing my story, I had no idea how to build my little world, and I don’t realise left-behind children’s lives.

1

But after watched Yamuna Yuan’s The Reading Boy, it changed my mind. The boy in the film is a left-behind child, lived with his grandfather and the joy of the boy and grandpa comes from the boy often reads stories for his Grandpa. The book he borrowed from the library is a good way to past time in a mountain village without TV and internet. The storybook added fun to live. If my book can, at least one child no longer fears the darkness, it will make me happy. In addition, my friends encouraged me to pay attention to the issue of left-behind children through the means of cultural communication, let more people know left-behind children. In order to help them receive more help. I decided to continue this project.

So I found a lot of information, including video data, books, and some actual investigations. Regarding my target audience, I would like to know about their situation. So I watch a lot of documentaries about left-behind children, including: Nengjie Jiang’s Children at a Village School Shuyuan Liang’s X-change Season Nengjie Jiang’s The Road Yaxuan Yuan’s The Reading Boy Yimou Zhang and Peng Wang’s Stories through 180 Lenses Nengjie Jiang’s Left-behind Dreams BBC NEWS’ China’s left-behind children, etc.

3 PICTURE 1/2/3 all [picture from the documentary which I watched

A summary of the left-behind children lives: They are generally living with the elderly; they are take care by their grandparents. Their parents only back home when the Chinese New Year. The elderly care for the children is to solve the problem of food and clothing. Children’s ideological education is lacking, for example, when the children are afraid at night. Crying, the old man will say crying children will be taken away by the monster; this incorrect guidance will make children more afraid of darkness.

Analysis and conclusion: Most of these film and television materials are documentaries. They truly record the lives of left-behind children. The first feeling after watching these documentaries was extreme repression. I realized the problem of behind children was far more than being lonely; I felt my strength was so small and even I deeply suspect this book can help them or not.

ANALYSIS: SIMILAR WORKS ABOUT CHILDREN FEAR OF DARKNESS

The works about children’ against fear, the materials shows on the left: Adrià García and Víctor Maldonado’s Nocturna (2007) Peter Ramsey’s Rise of the Guardians (2012) Pete Docter, David Silverman and Lee Unkrich’s Monsters, Inc. (2001) Alan Barillaro’s Piper (2016) Claude Barras’s Ma vie de courgette (2016) Spelman, Cornelia Maude Parkinson and Kathy’s When I Feel Scared (2002) Tony Ross’ I’m Coming to Get You! (2008) Brown, Ruth’s A Dark Dark Tale (1992) Hendry, Diana; Chapman Jane’s The Very Noisy Night (2002) TWillis, Jeanne and Varley, Susan’s The Monster Bed (2007)

2. Through the story of the Elves guarding their children, comforting children has a potential power in guarding them: The Rise of the Guardians (2012) and Nocturna (2007), especially the film Nocturna, which puts people in the night by means of anthropomorphism. The natural phenomenon is interpreted as the activity of the elves, really great. 3. Children themselves have a strong, courageous power to face life: Alan Barillaro’s Piper (2016) Claude Barras’ Ma vie de courgette (2016) 4. A very straightforward way to objectively state the natural phenomenon at night instead of having a monster: Spellman, Cornelia Maude Parkinson and Kathy’s When I Feel Scared (2002) Hendry, Diana; Chapman Jane’s very noisy night (2002)

Analysis of works: Through analyzing these works, find my own way of writing stories. 1. By letting children know the life of monsters, they feel that they are no longer afraid of the monsters: Monsters, Inc. (2001) depicts the life of monsters and their warm stories with a child. The Monster Bed (2007) from a monster‘s perspective, humans are also terrible and in Tony Ross’ I’m coming to you! (2008), the monster is as small as a bug, making children feel no need to fear at all.

12

5. Alternative perspective: A Dark Dark Tale (1992) uses a special technique to render the story first scary, but in the end, it makes you feel relax.

CHILDREN’S PSYCHOLOGY AND CHARACTERS SELECTION

CHILDREN’S PSYCHOLOGY

CHARACTERS SELECTION

The reason why children are afraid of dark is also important for the writing of stories. This issue will also directly support my story skeleton. This problem also involves the field of child psychology. For this reason, I have read some articles and consulted with teachers who have studied child psychology.

By summarizing the relevant information, I have chosen some ways for left-behind children to overcome darkness: 1. Tell the children my own experiences, the things I afraid of in my childhood and I have overcome, let children know darkness can overcome. 2. Correct some of the wrong ways of intimidation and try to use the good things in the story to comfort children’s fears. 3. Let the children come into contact with the darkness and let them slowly understand that the night is not terrible.

In these materials, children’s animism is the most common. According to Jean Piaget (1896~1980)“children in the pre-operational period will believe everything has the life…By animism, Piaget (1929) meant that for the preoperational child the world of nature is alive, conscious and has a purpose. Piaget has identified four stages of animism :1.Up to the ages 4 or 5 years, the child believes that almost everything is alive and has a purpose.2.During the second stage (5-7 years) only objects that move have a purpose.3.In the next stage (7-9 years), only objects that move spontaneously are thought to be alive.4. In the last stage (9-12 years), the child understands that only plants and animals are alive.”

I integrated these methods into the story, and combined the methods used in similar works, integrated these methods into the role. And conducted a general planning of my story structure-- - A boy’s night journey, and through the different characters encountered, they help the boys overcome fear: 1. The boy himself - empathy, makes the child feel more than he is afraid of darkness, but also let the child immersed in the hero’s journey to start the night 2. Fox - Let the child think backwards and act as a companion 3. Owl - Breaking Incorrect Education Concept 4. The Queen of the Night-Guardian let the child believe that there are other forces that guard themselves silently 5. Little creatures - the night is Beautiful, and there are no monsters

From this, I set the age of the hero in my story,a boy who is going to be 8 years old, his psychology will enter the second stage of animism. The background of my story is set as: A boy experienced a wonderful journey on the night. In addition to understanding the causes of the problem, it is also important to address the issue of children’s fear of darkness. Dr Erickson suggested “Over time, help him actively master his fears by reading or making up stories about little boys and their monsters. Or you could join him in imaginative play and act out monster stories.”

In addition, because the level of education of left-behind children is sometimes inconsistent with their age, my audience age group basically target in primary schools children who can read on their own.

THESE CHARACTERS HELP THE CHILDREN EXPERIENCE A WONDERFUL NIGHT JOURNEY. AND LET THEM KNOW THAT THE NIGHT IS NOT TERRIBLE. THROUGH THIS PART, I BELIEVE FACTS HAVE PROVED THAT SUFFICIENT INFORMATION RESEARCH WILL BETTER HELP CREATION.

LAYOUT& ANALYZE

PICTURE 1/2/4 the reference books which take picture from bookstores and library

PICTURE 3 analyze the layout of the books

BECAUSE OF THE LIMITED TIME, I GENERAL DIVIDED THE TASK INTO TWO ASPECT: THE FIRST ONE IS TO LOOK AT THE RELEVANT MATERIALS, THE STORY IS COMPILED, AND THE SECOND IS THE STUDY OF LAYOUT AND TYPESETTING ETC.

01 About the typesetting of books:I went to the library to read the materials and went to the bookstore. I put some good screen layout, typesetting, made notes and analysis, as shown in Figure 3, 4,including these books: On a Dark Dark Night by Simon Prescott(2009)

04

Little Red by Lynn Roberts (2011) The Wolves in the Walls by Gaiman, Neil (2005) The Fox and the Star by Coralie Bickford-Smith (2015) The Worm and the Bird by Coralie Bickford-Smith (2017) The Bear and the Piano \by David Litchfield (2016) Read the Book, Lemmings! by Ame Dyckman(2017) L’onda by Suzy Lee(2008)

These layouts will be used as a reference when I plot the storyboard. In addition, Read the Book, Lemmings! (2017) The paper of this book is my favorite one. If there is time to make my book, I would like to use the same Paper texture. In addition, regarding the size of the book, I prefer to make a small vertical layout book(lightweight and easy to carry), children can put the book beside the pillow and read at any time.

STORY STORY CONSTRUCTION AND REFERENCE BOOKS

For the first time in everything, I tried something fresh with a confused and expectant heart.

The lengthy process of writing is not described here, because the process is loose, the story is combined with the previous research, personal experience and imagination. Although the story has been constantly revised, and the details of the adjustment, but the final result I was relatively satisfied.

Before I started writing my story, I read a phrase before Kurosawa“It’s important that [young people] at least do a certain amount of reading. Unless you have a rich reserve within, you can’t create anything. That’s why I often say that creating comes from memory. Memory is the source for your creation. You can’t create something out of anything.Whether it’s from reading or from your own real-life experience; you can’t create unless you have something inside yourself. In that sense, it’s important to always read a variety of things. Current novels are fine, but I think people should read the classics too.So, if a film school was set up it would be important to stress reading.”

So before and after my writing, I referred to the following information: These materials gave me more understanding and confidence in story writing. Among them, Robert McKee’s Story: Substance, Structure, Style, and the Principles of Screenwriting gave a very detailed description of the plots, characters and other settings. It was a book that greatly benefited me.

STORY

01

IN THIS SESSION, MY MAIN JOB IS TO REFINE IMAGES OF REAL LIFE INTO ILLUSTRATIONS. THESE SKETCHES ARE INSPIRED BY A VARIETY OF SOURCES, SOME FROM REAL LIFE, SOME FROM WEB IMAGES, AND OTHERS BASED ON STORY TEXTS.

These drafts directly determines the painting style of the entire set of works. I did not design characters image very complicated, because Story: Substance, Structure, Style, and the Principles of Screenwriting (2016) mentioned in the book that the author needs like a God who knows every detail in his own world, so the design of the character, including the setting of the scene is simple. The goal that I want to achieve in this book is simple, there are no blunders and unreasonable mistakes.

02 20

21

THE CHARACTER DRAFTS IN THE STORY THE DRAFT OF THE SCENE The picture of the draft scene is the information I took when I went to the rural area. The image of the hero in the story is referenced from the boy in Shuyuan Liang’s X-change Season and also combined with information on the status of the left-behind children. The image of them is summarized as: The hair is unevenly cut, small red-faced, thick cotton coat, and small cotton shoes.

04 09

The animals in the book, reference the web images, such as the image of an owl, I drew some different types of owls and combined their parts together. The elves in the book, according to Fantasy Art Drawing Skills: All the Art Techniques, Demonstrations, and Short Cuts You Need to Master Fantasy Art (2012) by Socar Myles. Such as the golden rat, the prototype is a simple rat in the house. According to the needs of the story, I use exaggerated way create it.

PROCESS: 1 FOLLOW THE STORYBOARD TO WRITE WITH A PENCIL, THEN TRACED WITH TECHNICAL PEN 2 COLOURED WITH COLOURFUL INKS, WHITE INK LAST ADJUSTED

Compare with previous works: Water-based pigments change from watercolor to colorful inks, and the colors are more saturation. The disadvantage is that colorful inks are not easily preserved; they are easily contaminated and dry.

01

As for font selection, it is also an area that I am not good at. I first collected some information on what kind of font the child's picture book uses. When I chose the typeface later, I don't know which was better, so I added the image with the different typeface.

The color of the previous painting has become brighter, and the works have become more stereoscopic with the white pen.

PAINTING PROCESS FEEDBACK AND REFLECTION

when the final cite, I asked the opinions of people, because my audience is a child, so it needs an easy-to-read font. Everyone thinks that the font in Figure 1 is better, so I also used this font in my official form in my works.

The style of painting has changed from the previous biased realism to the current style. Although it cannot be said to be fully illustrations, it has improved. To sum up when I finished this project: When drawing a story illustration, the front figures and scene settings should all is fully considered, because the next scene, or characters, is based on the previous image. When drawing a series of stories, it is best to use the same kind of drawing paper. The effect of different types and brands of paper is different. For example arches’ 300g cold pressed, this kind of paper absorbs color more, and the color that the picture presents is deeper than other papers. Artistico Traditional White 300g cold pressed, the color appears lighter, and the effect of the pigment after dried effect softer. In order to scan a good effect, the best painting of the work is sealed with tape, so that the work removed after dry has few folds and can be scanned very clearly.

FINAL OUTCOME THE NAME OF THE BOOK IS THE LIGHT AT NIGHT IT MEANS THAT THERE IS NO NEED TO FEAR THE NIGHT, AND THERE IS LIGHT IN THE DARK TO ILLUMINATE THE ROAD... THERE ARE SEVERAL DIFFERENT LIGHTS IN THE BOOK: MOONLIGHT, STARLIGHT, FIREFLY LIGHTS AND LIGHTS IN HOME. THESE LIGHTS ARE NOT NOTICED AT ORDINARY TIMES BUT HAVE ACCOMPANY US EVERY NIGHT WITH US. TO SEE THE ACTUAL EFFECT, THE SIZE OF THE ILLUSTRATION IN THE BOOK IS 1:1. THE LENGTH OF THE BOOK IS 28CM*19CM. IT IS EASY TO CARRY. DUE TO THE DIFFERENT SIZES OF THE WORKS, THE FINAL RESULTS WERE UPLOADED SEPARATELY. PLEASE CHECK THEM SEPARATELY.

LONDON IS OPEN THE REASON WHY I CHOSE LONDON IS OPEN IS THAT THIS EVENT WILL PROVIDE A ROOM OF CREATIVTY SPACE. ADVERTISING ILLUSTRATIONS ARE ALSO A NEW TRY. I HOPE TO HANDS-ON THROUGH THIS PROJECT. IN ADDITION TO THE ACCUMULATION OF HIS OWN CREATIVE EXPERIENCE, AS A FOREIGNER WHO FIRST ARRIVED IN LONDON,EXPRESS MY FEELING ABOUT LONDON. ANOTHER NEED TO PAY ATTENTION IS THE DISPLAY FORM. BECAUSE IT IS IN THE FORM OF BILLBOARDS, IT NEEDS TO TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THEIR ORDER OF DISPLAY. IN THIS PROJECT, THERE ARE MANY SMALL DETAILS THAT NEED TO BE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT, SUCH AS THE RESOLUTION OF THE DISPLAY SCREEN, THE ORDER OF THE NUMBER OF SHEETS REQUIRED, THE BANNER, AND THE PERIPHERAL PRODUCTS, ETC.

THE SHOWS THE WORLD THAT LONDON REMAINS ENTREPRENEURIAL, INTERNATIONAL AND FULL OF CREATIVITY AND POSSIBILITY. IMPROVEMENT IDEAS

PICTURE 2 my mood map

01

THIS IS THE FIRST TIME TO EXCHANGE IDEAS WITH PEOPLE . AFTER LISTENING TO THE VARIOUSIDEAS. I FEEL THE AUDIENCE AND THE ORIENTAL CULTURE WHICH I DECIDE DO IS SOMEWHAT NARROW. I WANT TO RE-SELECT A DIRECTION...

Before me brainstorming it, I took a train to Oxford Street in London. Then I wrote down my impression of London. My original idea was combines the similarities and differences between east and Western cultures in the pictures. The audience is Chinese. But I found this idea is too limited. In order not to go in the wrong direction, I read the request again and watched the promotion video. And I wanted to use my audience to narrow down the scope. I definite my audience: children. With the fixed audience, I reduced the scope to cartoon characters. . when I was in London, I went to the bookstore and found a variety of books, it also inspired me I defined the scope as the character in the fairy tale book. Immediately afterwards, I began to combine the campaign theme with these elements: cultural similarities and differences, different characters from books of different countries. I also selected fairy characters from different countries I hope parents and their children will go to Oxford Street to see these advertisements, which will give them a sense of intimacy and find familiar characters in their memory. As for how to highlight London, I chose several famous locations in London and put in my painting.

CULTURAL ELEMENTS AND CHARACTERS SELECTION About select cultural elements: In order to show that London has various cultural elemis, I use compare similar and differences between London and the other countries’ culture. And I layout several ideas, they are: Dragon’s appearance between east and west Tea culture Hat culture Chess culture First of all, I identify some of the unique cultural elements of the British and London, and then I discovered that these different cultural elements are related to other countries. For example, the afternoon tea culture and the oriental tea culture are similar but different. There are various options for drinking tea in Britain. India, China and Japan’s tea could be found in shopping mall. This is also a kind of cultural diversity reflection. Characters selection: The criteria for character selection in the painting are as follows: Associated with the selected cultural elements Story characters come from books in different countries.

RESEARCH& DRAFTS

01

THE NEXT STEP WAS THE RESEARCH. AT THE BEGINNING, MY IDEA WAS TO CREATE THE CHARACTER IMAGE BASED ON THE DESCRIPTION IN THE BOOK. BUT THERE ARE SOME PROBLEMS WHEN I USE THIS METHOD, SUCH AS THE DISCRIBE OF CHARACTER IS NOT ENOUGH IN THE BOOK, AND WHEN THE DRAFT WAS SHOWED TO PEOPLE, MANY CHARACTERS WHICH I CREATED COULD NOT BE IDENTIFIED, SO I LEARN FROM SOME OF THE ILLUSTRATIONS IN THE BOOK AND THE IMAGE OF THE FILM. I HOPE PEOPLE CAN UNDERSTAND AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE.

04 My drafts The content starts with the first picture, On the bookshelf of a bookstore, the characters from the fairy tales with different countries’ book, they went out the bookstore and walk to liberty store, Piccadilly Square, The British Museum...

TRY NEW METHODS: N ORDER TO SEE THE RENDERING SKETCH, I PRINTED PHOTOS WHICH FROM ME AND THE PICTURES ON THE INTERNET. SOME LARGE BUILDINGS WILL USECOPYPAPER TO DRAW LINES DRAFT AND CONBINETHEM TOGETHER. THIS WAY MAKES MY DRAWING FASTER THAN BEFORE.

When you walk on the streets of London, you will find childhood fairy tales which you seen rolling on the screen, it will give people a warm feeling, also reflects the children’s books in different countries can be found in London. I hope that travel people will take their children to the street and see my illustrations, which will give their no stranger feeling. These characters which from different countries’ story books will make parents and children who from different countries feel like home, that book including puss in boots .little red hat... PICTURE

I also picked out some London-specific locations and eventually followed the tour sequence from north to south: starting from the daunt bookstore , the characters ran from the bookstore, they bought mad Hatter’s hat through liberty London, and then crossed Piccadilly circus, then attending a tea party before the British Museum , and then playing chess in the chess room near the London Eye.

THE BRITISH MUSEUM & IMAGE EXPLANATION THIRD STOP: BRITISH MUSEUM CHARACTERS, BUNBUKU CHAGAMA’S JAPANESE RACCOON DOG, ALICE, MARCH RABBIT, DORMOUSE SOURCES OF INSPIRATION: WHEN VISITING THE BRITISH MUSEUM, I CAN SEE THE TEAPOTS OF DIFFERENT COUNTRIES IN DIFFERENT STYLES. THE BRITISH AFTERNOON TEA CULTURE IS VERY INTERESTING, AND ITS TEA CULTURAL ALSO HAVE SIMILARITY AND DIFFERENCES WITH OTHER COUNTRIES, SO I WANTED TO DRAW TEA CULTURE. IT ALSO HAD A DESCRIPTION ABOUT AFTERNOON TEA IN THE WONDERLAND OF ALICE IN WONDERLAND. SO I COMBINE THEM HERE. IMAGE DESCRIPTION: HERE I COMBINED THE PILLARS OF THE BRITISH MUSEUM WITH THE TEA RACK. ALICE AND HER PARTNER WERE ENJOYING THE AFTERNOON TEA. THEY DID NOT NOTICE THAT THE RACCOON IN THE STORY OF THE BUNBUKU CHAGAMA WAS EATING CAKES IN THE TEA SET. Reflection: While I tried my best to do my works, the finished product actually has a certain gap with what I think; there are many areas for improvement; for example: 1 Many things I want show to audience. I do not know how to choose between them. 2 Advertisements need to allow the audience to understand the intentions of the producers within a short period of time. However, I have not yet learned this ability; it is still insufficient to communicate with the viewers. So obviously the next time I do this type of project, still need to learn how to pass the information directly to the viewer. Although this project is not good, I also gained some experience, such as: 1. Know the type of print ads and creative methods; 2. More importantly, the importances of time management, hand-painted often take longer than the computer, so the submission time and plan time are also important. I learned how to refine the characters’ characteristics. 3. In addition, my ability to combine brief has also increased.

TARGET MARKET

Make the surface of drawer

PICTURE 2 The Skech of the drawer surface and test colour on my Skech book

THE BRIEF OF ‘TARGET MARKET’: WE SHOULD NOT DESIGN JUST FOR OURSELVES OR FOR OUR PEER GROUP. FOR THIS PROJECT YOU SHOULD IDENTIFY A CLEAR TARGET AUDIENCE AND MAKE WORK THAT EXPLICITLY RESPONDS TO THAT AUDIENCE...

The original 3 ideas about target market: The direction: first,I want to research about smell 1. A guidance book which provide an interesting odor map to people. And the traveler could add their favorite places where smells good. 2. Provide some paper to people who like use color to describe odor .they can paint what they like 3. An interaction with youngsters and adults, they will give some ideas when they see the images. And some memories they can recall when they use the goods which in the drawer. The box also can collect some stories about smell. Finally, I chose the third idea because I think it is interesting to interact with others; I also look forward to looking the feedback from the box. So I started to develop this idea, and search different smell from the daily life. For example I special noticed smells when I walk along the street. It’s funny when I depict different smells. 54

55

What we know is that smell is the oldest sense, even bacteria have. Before sight or hearing, before even touch, creatures evolved to respond to chemicals around them.

INTRODUCTION: Taste and smell are important for people, person chooses delicious food and the perfume which smell good, and my work in this chapter is about taste and smell. As you know, the title of this chapter is the target market, so my target audiences are adults and youngsters, except children because they couldn’t express themselves clearly. I make a box which people can use the items in the box, after that, people can put their opinions or stories in the box. Of course, the product maker can also view consumer feedback to improve their product quality. PROCESS: This is my first three-dimensional work; it obviously needs me spending more time to think how to make it. I transformed a cosmetic box and made a lot of drawers using cardboards. How to measure and design each part of box is time consuming. I need to use the space carefully and let the six drawers look neat. I also hope that the drawer-type box can increase the mystery of the work to attract the viewers. After the box was well constructed, I made the drawing on the front cover, each of the drawers representing a flavor, such as a seemingly sweet strawberry tea and a cool flower garden.

THE BRIEF OF ‘ALTER EGO’: REMEMBER THAT WE PRIMARILY DESIGN FOR OTHERS, NOT FOR OURSELVES. FOR THIS PROJECT YOU SHOULD CREATE AN IDENTITY WHICH IS NOT YOURSELF, AND DESIGN FROM THAT PERSPECTIVE...

PICTURE 3 smell slight sweet and a bit sour

ALTER EGO

The original 3 ideas about alter ego: 1. Alter ego: a blind child Illustrate 26 English letter use different material, which could be touch, and through it feel the world. 2. Alter ego: craftsman who makes paper and proposes people treasure the paper. 3. Alter ego: breeder in the zoo Make a guide book which shows different characteristics and stories of each animal, such as a panda named huahua who really likes hugs. Not only just introduce their habits. I choose first idea in the beginning. But when I do the research, I found several problems. One of problems is hard to understand blind child’s feeling, and it’s hard to find the material; such as animals fur and some special material. To some extent, buy animal fur is cruel to the animals. So I do this work as outside class works, and I can adjust the material slowly. The picture 1 shows the original plan and layout the research of material.

PICTURE 2 smell of herb and woody flavors

PICTURE 4

Finally, I decide to choose second idea, so I have searched lots of things of how to make handmade paper. Because handmade paper has many different way to make, so I just choose one of them(as follows). The process of making handmade paper: 1. Collect the material: bark of Paper Mulberry 2. Dry bark under the sun 3. Soak bark in the water more than 10 days, rinse many times 4. Stir in lime 5. Boiling 6-8 days 6. Soak in the water again- 10 days and fiber go write 7. Beat material until become paper pulp

SKETCH THE PROCESS

INTRODUCTION: In this project, my alter ego is a craftsman who makes paper. I want to become a craftsman because I think craftsman spirit is really cool. They devoting them to work, strong patience, endurance‌and as one of the four great inventions of ancient China, paper making is an important invention that promotes the transmission of human culture.

Reference the person’s image who is a craftsman doing handmade paper

DESIGN THE CHARACTER

2

PROCESS: To make sure shows the right process of making paper, I research a lot about how to make paper and put them in one picture. It let me explore how to manage lots of information and select useful images as well as combines them. I also have made some stereo handwork to show layering effect and made a wooden frame by myself, which let the picture seems more complete. REFLECTION: Although the work has some detail of Three-dimensional, it needs more layers to make the picture finer. I adjusted the color of the picture and used colored ink to increase the brightness of the color because I used to be a watercolor student who would have a hue of grayscale biased sketches and when I found my own custom color deeply distressed, I also tried to change my paint pattern with crayons and pastel but did not succeed. This work is a good start for my painting to change.

62

Because I want to add some paper art with my work , I use some foam and cut them carefully to support the stereo paper .

FINAL OUTCOME The eyes go clockwise along the river at 12 o’clock. This is a complete paper making process. My alter ego is an industrious handmade paper maker who is industrious and simple, adheres to the cumbersome papermaking process. He is so day after day heritage of traditional wisdom, some paper in the picture is real handmade paper up; if you touch the painting can feel its texture.

THE FINAL OUTCOME

The end of the process is the center of the screen, and papermakers are making a paper lantern with handmade paper.

THE BRIEF OFWORD: WE SHOULD ALWAYS THINK ABOUT THE WRITTEN OR SPOKEN WORD IN RELATION TO OUR DESIGNS AND DESIGNING. FOR THIS PROJECT YOU SHOULD MAKE WORK WHICH CLEARLY CONSIDERS WHAT NEEDS TO BE SAID, AND HOW, USING LANGUAGE. DOES YOUR PROJECT NEED TO INCLUDE TEXT, EVEN IF IT’S ONLY ONE WORD? (EXCERPT)

01

INTRODUCTION: People change their way of life because of the seasons, such as their clothing and diet, seasonal changes have an important impact on our lives, so in this chapter, I put the elements of the four seasons and link to the ‘word’, made a set of Four Seasons greeting card , using different types of fonts to show it. PROCESS and REFLECTION : 1. I use different fonts to reflect the characteristics of the four seasons, such as winter fonts angular clear , but in spring the round font also gives mellow feeling. 2 . In addition, I also learned to use different colours to reflect the characteristics of the season, I also realized that the colour has his own personality, just like the spring green more yellow, while the green has more blue elemis in the summer . 3 . I also learned how to use wood material, although it took me a long time, I completed in the end. 02 68

FINAL OUTCOME Spring, summer, autumn and winter each card tells their own story...... Spring, the small Shiba Inu sitting under the cherry tree flowers, the card’s main color is the spring of the new green and cherry tender pink. Summer, the raccoon breaks off a piece of seasonal watermelon in the grass, followed by a lush jungle. The card’s main color is dark green, it’s different from the spring green, and the summer green contains blue heavier. Autumn leaves are not green, and some turn into a variety of colors, such as orange-yellow and fuchsia; the hills are covered with a layer of golden, and the fox running around the hills. Snow fell, the lake icy, hills and small houses are covered with thin snow, and a bear nap beside the woods, the other bear broke the ice fishing. Small house hung a small lantern to and add a touch of warmth for the winter .Winter card colors are gray-blue, brown trees and cubs, and a little red and yellow embellishment. Instead of a flat card, the card is a box; people can put a small gift in the box.

PROCESS THE BRIEF OF PROCESS THE PROCESS HELPS US REVISIT THE PROCESS OF MY CREATION. EACH PROCESS OF CREATION NEEDS TO BE REFLECTED IN THE WORK...

INTRODUCTION:

Process is important to an artist, it is a continuous process. In this project, I drew two A2 size works. They are related, the first is called ‘meditation’, and the second is called ‘memory’. From the picture composition, the two paintings are mainly brown, and the screen layout is similar. In terms of content, ‘meditation’ is before ‘memory’, that is to say, I have thought through the process of painting, during this period I painting the ‘mediation’. And after rethink the process of painting, I have drawn ‘memory’. Meditation: The girl in the picture is lit up with sandalwood (sandalwood has a unique soothing effect to make people (refreshing, eliminate distractions, is a supplementary tool to cultivate nourishment), smoke-filled picture, the hero lost in thought; because she did not fall into the memory, her hair is hanging down. Behind her is a row of drawers, drawers are mostly closed. At this time only two Elves in the picture, because they have not started their own work. The process has written on the three-dimensional prominent drawer surface. In order to make the text more eye-catching they are marked with a white paint pen,and in order to prevent the white paint pen looks abrupt, I use the paint pen point some dust-like white spots, these spots echoes with the white paint pen words.

THE PROCESS ONTHE PICTURE, WE CAN READ FROM TOP TO BOTTOM IN ORDER:1.ANALYSE THE BRIEF 2. IDENTIFY KEY REQUIREMENTS 3. RESEARCH 4. IDEA GENERATION 5. IDEA DEVELOPMENT 6. PRODUCTION 7. TESTING 8. IMPLEMENTATION 9. EVALUATION 10. REDESIGN

Because the carrier used handmade rice paper, so I

FINAL OUTCOME: MEMORY

The girl in the picture falls into memories. The hair rises and connect with the floating memory bubble; some of the bubbles are blurred because our memories are not so clear. While some pictures of the memory have the content, some beautiful and some pain, and some are with their families, while others are relatives to leave.

The color of the hair is no longer a vermilion because it is intended to express the connection between the hair and the memory, so here the hair has changed from vermilion to cold blue, with only the vermilion at the verge of the picture. In this picture, you can see there are many elves are busy with their work, they are collecting precious memories, and store them in a drawer.

02 PICTURE 2

the detail of the picture, there is only a bit vermilion at the verge of the hair

WHEN I PAINT THE MEMORY, I ALSO REPEATEDLY THINK ABOUT MY PAINTING PROCESS AND TRY TO IMPROVE IT. THIS PROJECT MADE ME MORE CLEARER AND MORE ORGANIZED WHEN I DOING MY WORKS.

NOTE: SOME OF THE BUBBLES APPEAR CLOUDY BECAUSE OF THE REFLECTIVE NATURE OF THE GOLD PIGMENTS. 03 PICTURE 1/2 picture 1:the detail of bubble and hair ,although the gold pigment have reflective . picture 2:some elves are arrange the memories.
