THIS PORTFOLIO CALLED SPROUTED SEED, IT IS MY SECOND PORTFOLIO AFTER I CAME TO THE UK. I NAMED IT SPROUTED SEED, BECAUSE BECAUSE MY STRIVE WAS LIKE A SEED I PLANTED IN THE ILLUSTRATION FIELD, IT SPROUTED, MY ILLUSTRATIONS IMPROVED, AND I WAS HAPPY. IT ALSO CONTAINS SOMETHING I HAVE EVER DONE BEFORE ,SUCH AS WRITING A STORY AND ILLUSTRATE IT, DESIGN POSTERS IN THE FORM OF ADVERTISEMENTS, AND REFLECT ON YOUR OWN HARVEST THIS YEAR. CONSIDER SOME ISSUES THAT WERE NOT NOTICED BEFORE.

THE PORTFOLIO In the starting point project, because the process of writing books is long and content is fragmented, I try to make them look logical; In London is open, in order to make the content easy to understand, I have introduced each painting in the following sections.

CONTENTS THIS PORTFOLIO CONTAIN 3 PROJECT, STARTING POINT, LONDON IS OPEN AND WHAT GDCPDONE FOR ME . THE BASIC CONTENT INCLUDEING: THE RESEARCH PROCESS, DRAFTS, WORDS INSTRUCTIONS,REFLECTION SUMMARY , FEEDBACK, FINAL ART WORKS, BIBLIOGRAPHY ,IMAGE BIBLIOGRAPHY ETC.

STARTING POINT DETERMINE THE MATERIAL, AUDIENCE, AND MEDIA The starting point is an open project. When I choosing a topic, I thought for a long time. From the subject matter, I want to make a topic about some social issues, not just a good-looking decorative painting. But there are many social issues. I’m from considering my target audience and starts to narrow this range, for example, if my audience is an animal protectionist, then my theme may choose to protect endangered animals... During this period, I watched a lot of film and television materials such as: Louie Psihoyos’ The Cove, Yann Arthus-Bertrand’s Home: The Story of a Journey, Jacques Perrin, Jacques Cluzaud, and Michel Debats’ The Travelling Birds ShuyuanLiang’s X-change Season 9, Chai Jing’s ‘Under The Dome’, China’s Pollution Documentary and other short films… In the end, I positioned my audience as a left-behind child because I discovered that the complexity of some social issues is beyond my control. Through the determination of my audience, my topic came into being. It was to help the left-behind children overcome the fear of blackness. The idea was that after watching X-change Season 9, a boy inside the video who has no parents looks after him and he supports a family alone. He was afraid when the night. So he always sings loudly. I feel sad to see it. And I decided to help children overcome the fear of darkness. Taking into account the general family situation of left-behind children, I decided to use books as a carrier rather than other media, Internet or TV, which required extra money. This is a very interesting challenge because it is my first time to write a story and illustrate it. I hope to fill gaps in these areas. In order to be able to make the work before the deadline, the reasonable planning time is obviously necessary.

THE FIGURE ON THE RIGHT SHOWS THE PROCESS OF COMPLETING THIS BOOK. I WILL MARK THINGS THAT I HAVE DONE EVERY WEEK TO MAKE CLEAR MY PROGRESS; BASICALLY, ACCOMPLISH A SMALL GOAL EVERY TWO WEEKS. BECAUSE IT IS MY FIRST TIME DO STORYTELLING, THE PREPARATORY WORK WILL TAKE A LONG TIME. I DIVIDED THE WHOLE PROCESS ROUGHLY INTO 6:3:2. 6 that is the story research and material preparation, accounted for most of the time; the drawing is 3 because when the story and the storyboard done, the part of the painting will be more relaxed; 2 is left for the typesetting and the next adjust time.

Actual investigation: Although it is impossible to investigate left-behind children, ordinary children still have a fear of darkness even when their parents are around because according to Jean William Fritz Piaget's Animism, children have an anxious psychology at the age of 2-4.they afraid of the darkness. To understand where the children are scared, I surveyed friends and relatives around me. Some examples were thrown away. Children were scared as follows: under the bed, in the cabinet, outside the window, behind the door, behind the door, wolfs, toilets, stairs, and monsters appear when people closing their eyes. Based on these findings, I will describe these places where high-frequency children feel scared and try to eliminate children’s fears of these places.

\DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS: LEFT-BEHIND CHILDREN‘S LIVES

Before I started writing my story, I had no idea how to build my little world, and I don’t realise left-behind children’s lives.

1

But when I watch Yaxuan Yuan’s The Reading Boy, it changed my mind. The boy in the film is a left-behind child who is dependent on his grandfather and the joy of the boy and grandpa comes from the fact that the boy often reads stories for his Grandpa. The book he borrowed from the library is a good way to past time in a mountain village without TV and internet. The storybook added fun to live. If my book can, at least one child no longer fears the darkness, it will make me happy. In addition, my friends encouraged me to pay attention to the issue of left-behind children through the means of cultural communication, let more people know left-behind children. in order to help them receive more help. I decided to continue this project.

So I found a lot of information, including video data, books, and some actual investigations. Regarding my target audience, I would like to know about their situation. So I watch a lot of documentaries about left-behind children, including: Nengjie Jiang’s Children at a Village School Shuyuan Liang’s X-change Season Nengjie Jiang’s The Road Yaxuan Yuan’s The Reading Boy Yimou Zhang and Peng Wang’s Stories through 180 Lenses Nengjie Jiang’s Left-behind Dreams BBC NEWS’ China’s left-behind children, etc.

3 PICTURE 1/2/3 all [picture from the documentary which I watched

Analysis and conclusion: Most of these film and television materials are documentaries. They truly record the lives of left-behind children. The first feeling after watching these documentaries was extreme repression. The cruelty of real life made me feel to have difficulty in breathing. I realized that the problem of staying behind children was far more than being lonely; I felt my strength was so small and even I deeply wonder this book can help them or not, their problem is not that the book can be solved.

2 11

12

A summary of the left-behind children lives: They are generally living with the elderly; they are taken care by their grandparents. The parents are basically the home of the Chinese New Year. The elderly care for the children is usually to solve the problem of food and clothing. Children’s ideological education is lacking, for example, when the children are afraid at night. Crying, the old man will say crying children will be taken away by the monster; this incorrect guidance will make children more afraid of darkness.

FIRST AND SECOND WEEKS DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS:SIMILAR WORKS WHICH TALK ABOUT CHILDREN DEFENCE DARKNESS

The works which regard to children’s work against fear, the materials I read include film, television works, and books(the pictures on the left ): Adrià García and Víctor Maldonado’s Nocturna (2007) Peter Ramsey’s Rise of the Guardians (2012) Pete Docter, David Silverman and Lee Unkrich’s Monsters, Inc. (2001) Alan Barillaro’s Piper (2016) Claude Barras’s Ma vie de courgette (2016) Spelman, Cornelia Maude Parkinson and Kathy’s When I Feel Scared (2002) Tony Ross’ I’m Coming to Get You! (2008) Brown, Ruth’s A Dark Dark Tale (1992) Hendry, Diana; Chapman Jane’s The Very Noisy Night (2002) TWillis, Jeanne and Varley, Susan’s The Monster Bed (2007)

2. Through the story of the Elves guarding their children, comforting children has a potential power in guarding them: The Rise of the Guardians (2012) and Nocturna (2007), especially the film Nocturna, which puts people in the night by means of anthropomorphism. The natural phenomenon is interpreted as the activity of the elves, really great. 3. Children themselves have a strong, courageous power to face life: Alan Barillaro’s Piper (2016) Claude Barras’ Ma vie de courgette (2016) 4. A very straightforward way to objectively state the natural phenomenon at night instead of having a monster: Spellman, Cornelia Maude Parkinson and Kathy’s When I Feel Scared (2002) Hendry, Diana; Chapman Jane’s very noisy night (2002)

Analysis of works: Through analyzing these works, find my own way of writing stories.

5. Alternative perspective: A Dark Dark Tale (1992) uses a special technique to render the story first scary, but in the end, it suddenly you feel relaxed.

1. By letting children know the life of monsters, they feel that they are no longer afraid of the monsters: Monsters, Inc. (2001) depicts the life of monsters and their warm stories with a child. The Monster Bed (2007) from a monster perspective, humans are also terrible and in Tony Ross’ I’m coming to you! (2008), the monster is as small as a bug, making children feel no need to fear at all.

PICTURE the characters in my books

WHY & HOW CHILDREN’S PSYCHOLOGY AND CHARACTERS SELECTION

In addition to understanding the status of left-behind children and similar works which about children defense fear, the reason why children are afraid of black is also important for the writing of stories. This issue will also directly support my story skeleton. This is the key issue that I pay attention to when I writing the story. This problem is obviously not as simple as the surface phenomenon. It also involves the field of child psychology. For this reason, I have read some articles and consulted with teachers who have studied child psychology.

By summarizing the relevant information, and taking into account the special nature of left-behind children - the lack of proper guidance by adults around them, I have chosen some ways for left-behind children to overcome darkness: 1. Tell the children my own experiences, what I’m afraid of in my childhood, and I have overcome it, let them empathetic and let them understand that not just them afraid of darkness. 2. Correct some of the wrong ways of intimidation and try to use the good things in the story to comfort children’s fears 3. Let the children come into contact with the darkness and let them slowly understand that the night is not terrible I integrated these methods into the story, based on these methods, combined the methods used in similar works, integrated these methods into the mission of the role, and conducted a general planning of my story structure-- - A boy’s night journey, and through the different characters encountered, these characters help the boys overcome fear: 1. The boy himself - empathy, makes the child feel more than he is afraid of darkness, but also let the child immersed in the hero’s journey to start the night 2. Fox - Let the child think backwards and act as a companion 3. Owl - Breaking Incorrect Education Concept 4. The Queen of the Night-Guardian, let the child believe that there are other forces who guard themselves silently 5. Little creatures - the night is Beautiful, and there are no monsters

In these materials, children’s animism is the most common. According to Jean Piaget (1896~1980)“children in the pre-operational period will believe everything has the life…By animism, Piaget (1929) meant that for the pre-operational child the world of nature is alive, conscious and has a purpose. Piaget has identified four stages of animism :1.Up to the ages 4 or 5 years, the child believes that almost everything is alive and has a purpose.2.During the second stage (5-7 years) only objects that move have a purpose.3.In the next stage (7-9 years), only objects that move spontaneously are thought to be alive.4. In the last stage (9-12 years), the child understands that only plants and animals are alive.” From this, I set the age of the hero in my story to that of a boy who is about to reach his eighth birthday. Because from the age of 7 to 8 years old, the child’s psychology will enter the second stage of animism, which is also the power of growth. The background of my story is set as: A boy experienced a wonderful journey on the night of transition from 7 to 8 years old. In addition to understanding the causes of the problem, it is also important to address the issue of children’s fear of blackness. Dr Erickson suggested “Over time, help him actively master his fears by reading or making up stories about little boys and their monsters. Or you could join him in imaginative play and act out monster stories.”

In addition, because the level of education of left-behind children is sometimes inconsistent with their age, my audience age group basically locates in primary schools children who can read on their own.

15

THESE CHARACTERS HELP THE CHILDREN EXPERIENCE A WONDERFUL NIGHT JOURNEY. AND LET THEM KNOW THAT THE NIGHT IS NOT TERRIBLE. THROUGH THIS PART, I BELIEVE FACTS HAVE PROVED THAT SUFFICIENT INFORMATION RESEARCH WILL BETTER HELP CREATION. 16

ANALYZE

PICTURE 3/4 analyze the layout of the books

BECAUSE OF THE LIMITED TIME, I GENERAL DIVIDED THE TASK INTO TWO LINES: THE FIRST ONE IS TO LOOK AT THE RELEVANT MATERIALS, THE STORY IS COMPILED, AND THE SECOND IS THE STUDY OF LAYOUT AND TYPESETTING ETC.

01 03

About the typesetting of books, I going to the library to read the materials and went to the bookstore in London according to Clare’s suggestion. I put some good screen layout, typesetting, made notes and analysis, as shown in Figure 3, 4,including these books: On a Dark Dark Night by Simon Prescott(2009)

05

Little Red by Lynn Roberts (2011) The Wolves in the Walls by Gaiman, Neil (2005)

These layouts will be used as a reference when I plot the storyboard. In addition, Read the Book, Lemmings! (2017) The paper of this book is my favorite one. If there is time to make my book, I would like to use the same Paper texture.

The Fox and the Star by Coralie Bickford-Smith (2015) The Worm and the Bird by Coralie Bickford-Smith (2017) The Bear and the Piano \by David Litchfield (2016)

In addition, regarding the size of the book, I prefer to make a small vertical layout book, lightweight and easy to carry, children can put beside the pillow and read at any time.

STORY STORY CONSTRUCTION AND REFERENCE BOOKS

For the first time in everything, I tried something fresh with a confused and expectant heart.

The lengthy process of writing is not described here, because the process is loose, the story is combined with the previous research, personal experience and imagination. Although the story has been constantly revised, and the details of the adjustment, but the final result I was relatively satisfied.

Before I started writing my story, I thought of a phrase before Kurosawa“It’s important that [young people] at least do a certain amount of reading. Unless you have a rich reserve within, you can’t create anything. That’s why I often say that creating comes from memory. Memory is the source for your creation. You can’t create something out of anything.Whether it’s from reading or from your own real-life experience; you can’t create unless you have something inside yourself. In that sense, it’s important to always read a variety of things. Current novels are fine, but I think people should read the classics too.So, if a film school was set up it would be important to stress reading.”

So before and after my writing, I referred to the following information: These materials gave me more understanding and confidence in story writing. Among them, Robert McKee’s Story: Substance, Structure, Style, and the Principles of Screenwriting gave a very detailed description of the plots, characters and other settings. It was a book that greatly benefited me.

IN THIS SESSION, MY MAIN JOB IS TO REFINE IMAGES OF REAL LIFE INTO ILLUSTRATIONS. THESE SKETCHES ARE INSPIRED BY A VARIETY OF SOURCES, SOME FROM REAL LIFE, SOME FROM WEB IMAGES, AND OTHERS BASED ON STORY TEXTS, SUCH AS LEPISMA SACCHARINA. IN CHINESE WORD LITERALLY IS CLOTH-FISH, THEY LIKE TO BITE BOOKS, FIBERS AND TEXTILES. IN MY STORY, I CHANGED THE MEANING, AND I PORTRAYED THEM AS A GROUP OF FISH ELVES THAT REALLY LIVED IN THE CLOSET.

Although this aspect may seem less complicated, it is also a tangled part, because the character image which I design here will use in the formal artwork, it directly determines the painting style of the entire set of works. In the image of people, I did not design it very complicated, because Story: Substance, Structure, Style, and the Principles of Screenwriting (2016) mentioned in the book that the author needs like a God who knows every detail in his own world, so the design of the character, including the setting of the scene is simple. The goal that I want to achieve in this book is simple, which is the details are accurate and there are no blunders and unreasonable mistakes.

THE CHARACTER DRAFTS IN THE STORY, THE DRAFT OF THE SCENE The character image in the story, the draft of the scene The picture of the draft of the scene is the information I took when I went to the village. The image of the owner in the story is referenced from the boy in Shuyuan Liang’s X-change Season and also combined with information on the status of the left-behind children. The image of them is summarized as:The hair is unevenly cut, small red-faced, thick cotton coat, and small cotton shoes.

04 09

The animals in the book, reference the web images, such as the image of an owl, I drew some different types of owls and combined their parts together. The elves in the book, according to Fantasy Art Drawing Skills: All the Art Techniques, Demonstrations, and Short Cuts You Need to Master Fantasy Art (2012) by Socar Myles. Such as the golden rat, the prototype is a simple rat in the house. According to the needs of the story, the characters exaggerated are combined with the image of the rat and create it. PART 1

There is a story behind every door, Our story begins... There is a boy; he is 7 years old, his family lives in the mountains. He is lonely because his parents lived away from their hometown and went to work in the city. The income of farm work in the mountain village was not enough to support the family. Mom and Dad only back home in the New Year. He lived with Grandma a few years ago. After Grandma left, he alone guarded the small house. The boy was scared every night. Every time he ran home before sunset, he was afraid of the night. Especially when he was sleeping, he always felt that the monster would come and catch him. He will go to school on the mountain for half an hour during the day. Although the morning sun always rises late, the neighbour's little partner will go together and will 1not feel afraid.

PICTURE 2 the pictures reference which took when I sketching outside

After school, his neighbour who works in shop stopped him and said that his mother sent him a package from the city. He found carefully cut the box, for fear of breaking the contents inside, there are snacks and a very well-wrapped wool hat, this is mother's own hand-woven for him, Tomorrow is his birthday. He loves this hat. He even feels that the hat has the temperature of his mother's hand. He immediately took the hat, couldn't wait for tomorrow. He ran out and playing hides and seeks with friends on the small slope. Every day they leave school, they would all go there. When the sun gradually fell into the crevices of the mountains, he was ready to go home, but soon he felt alarmed because he found that his hat disappeared. Because he did not want to make the new hat stick sweat, he hung it on the branch, but now he can't find it.

26

27

He panics searching in the bushes and trees. He went to find the partner who had just said goodbye and ask them whether see his hat or not. Eventually, a naughty boy feels sorry about his mischief. He said that he just put the hat on the tree branch which in the deep forest. In order to get back his hat, the boy walks along the pathway of the forest and finally, his hat was found on a small tree. When he was ready to go home, he found that twilight falls, he speeds up to his home. Help me! There is a voice coming from the deeper forest. Although the boy is scared, curiosity still allows him to walk in the direction of where the voice comes from. Soon he found that there was a pile of red hairy things on the ground in a distance, the sound came from it. When he walked in, he found out that was a small fox and the fox was looking forward to seeing him. “Human child, please help me, I will repay you." The boy could not stand the fox's begging eyes. He stepped forward to release the fox. In order to repay you, what you want? How about 6 pheasants? The boy said: I'll catch pheasants by myself, it's very interesting." "Hmmm... 5 fish?" fox scratching his head. "No, I don't like fish, more accurately I don't like fish bones." "Wait, I know. I smell the taste of fear. How can I help you?" Said fox, he shakes his head and thinks carefully, by the way, the fox untied the band on the wound that had stopped bleeding and set it aside. The boy said, "That's sound very strange." Fox: Come with me, I will take you to start a night trip... The fox walked in front of the boy, they walked along the path of the woods. "Why are afraid of darkness?" asked the fox "Grandma used to say that there will be monsters coming out to catch children at night" "I have never seen any monsters in the night." You are afraid of the night. I'm afraid of the day. I often sleep during the day and come out to play, find food, and play with relatives at night. For me, the day is more terrible than the night because the hunter wants to catch me. The dog also not friendly to me, but I also often tease hem for fun. Anyway, the night is beautiful to me. "

28

"Where are we going?" the boy asked Take magical leaves from the owl first. "Oh, no!" the boy said. Are you afraid? I don't understand, owls have Anything horrible, the fox said. Grandma once said to me that seeing an owl would cause bad things to happen. I don't think it's true. The owl will remove the field mouse for your crop. Fox said. How can you just be honest when you hear people say badly? The author states: The ancient Greeks respected the owl as a symbol of Athena and wisdom. In Japan, the owl is known as a blessing bird and represents auspiciousness and happiness. The boy followed the fox The fox said with comfort, don't be afraid, isn't the night dark? There is moonlighting, there are stars twinkling, and there are fireflies flying back and forth. I just wanted to ask you, what is in your hand? Boy wonder My own simple lantern can attract more fireflies We will arrive soon. Sure enough, the boy and the fox came to in front of a big tree. There was an owl on the tree and he was looking around. The owl said to the fox,My good friend haven’t seen you for a long time. Good brother, you almost can't see me again, this little boy rescued me from the trap. Can you give him a leaf that can see the world of the elves? You are really lucky my friend, Wait, I'll find the leaf Soon, the owl came back“ caught it, ” said to the fox A piece of leaves slowly falls down “thank you, and catch the vole together next time.” But remember, before 12 o'clock (owl said)... The owl slept before the fox asked Farewell to the owl. The fox gives the leaf to the boy and lets him look in front of his eyes. The boy holds the leaf in front of eyes and sees fog elf in the forest. The boy looked up at the starry sky and saw some beautiful stones inlaid on the black veil. And many elves sew gemstones on black yarn Looking up further, he saw the night queen. The boy cried out in surprise because the night queen is really huge. She is the queen of the night and manages all things at night.

THE TEXT & TYPEFACE 01 PART 2 As for font selection, it is also an area that I am not good at. I first collected some information on what kind of font the child's picture book uses. When I chose the typeface later, I could hardly tell which was better, so I added the finished picture with the text. The night queen leaned over and smiled and said to the boy, "I and the white queen take turns guarding this land every day. We walk around this planet. Where am I going, there is the night. The gem on my skirt is the star that shines in your night. Whether it is day or night, we all accompany you. After 12 o'clock, you are already 8 years old. I will give you the power of growth."

The golden rat is put down by the fox, he was scared into a ball. Go, Fox smiled and said The golden ox rats picked up the straw that fell on the ground and went home. The boy saw the golden mouse's small house and his little son. Look at the stove, A bunch of soap bubbles, Gathered in the bath by the stove, some floating in the steam from the kettle, and some went to the sauna in the stove and steamed all the hair bigger than before

Let the fox accompany you going home, but remember that the leaves will fade after 12 o'clock. Then you have to sleep. Boy and fox say goodbye to the queen of the night

when the final cite, I asked the opinions of the teachers and classmates, because my audience is a child, so it needs an easy-to-read font. Everyone thinks that the font in Figure 1 is better, so I also used this font in my official form in my works.

Open the wardrobe, the inside is like a water tank, a group of fish in the wandering The colour of the leaf is getting weaker and weaker. Boys and foxes see on the windowsill. The outside is very beautiful.

In this way, they walked back home, as usual in the room. Look at the fox says The boy kept the leaf in front of him and he saw what seemed to be moving under the bed. The fox saw it too. He grabbed that thing, Oh, it's gold rats that have lived on people's beds. They live under people's beds. They usually come out in the evening. They collect textiles that are woven into gold and sold to the Queen of the Dark.

In the end, the leaves changed from green to brown, from leaves to seeds, The fox said it was time to go to bed. The boy climbed into bed and the fox put his hat and seeds next to him. made a good dream, fox says The boy is asleep. After 12 o'clock, it is a new day. The boy grew up a year old and the young seeds germinated.

1 FOLLOW THE STORYBOARD TO WRITE WITH A PENCIL, THEN TRACED WITH TECHNICAL PEN 2 COLOURED WITH COLOURFUL INKS, WHITE PENS LAST ADJUSTED

THE BOOK'S PERIPHERAL DESIGN

Change: Water-based pigments change from watercolour to colourful inks, and the colours are more full. The disadvantage is that colourful inks are not easily preserved, they are easily contaminated and dry. The colour of the previous painting has become brighter, and the works have become more stereo with the white pen.

PROCESS &FEEDBACK

The style of painting has changed from the previous biased realism to the current style. Although it cannot be said to be fully illustrations, it has improved. To sum up: When drawing a story illustration, the front figures and scene settings should all be fully considered, because the next scene, or characters, is based on the previous image. When drawing a series of stories, it is best to use the same kind of drawing paper. The effect of different types and brands of paper is different. Although the electronic version on the computer can be adjusted the colour by the photoshop, the physical works differences will be seen; for example arches’ 300g cold pressed, this kind of paper absorbs colour more, the colour that the picture presents is deeper than other papers. Artistico Traditional White 300g cold pressed, the colour appears lighter, and the effect of the pigment after dried effect softer.

I DESIGNED SIX DICE. THEIR CONTENTS INCLUDE TASKS, ANIMALS, CARTOON CHARACTERS, PLANTS, ITEMS, AND WEATHER. THESE CUBES ARE MADE OF CARDBOARD AND CAN BE FOLDED ACCORDING TO THE DIVIDING LINES OF BLACK, AND THEY ARE PUT TOGETHER FIXED INSIDE WITH TAPE.IT WILL BECOME A CUBE. THE GAME CAN BE EITHER BY ITSELF OR WITH A PARTNER. THIS IS IN LINE WITH THE CHARACTERISTICS OF LEFT-BEHIND CHILDREN: THEY CAN BE USED FOR RECREATION WHEN THEY ARE BORED AND WRITE STORIES WITH IMAGINATION. IN ADDITION, THE BASIC RULE OF THE GAME IS TO THROW A DICE AND THEN USE TO COMPILE A SMALL STORY TO SHARE WITH A SMALL PARTNER. OF COURSE, PLAYERS CAN CHANGE THE RULES THEMSELVES.

In order to scan a good effect, the best painting of the work is sealed with tape, so that the work removed after dry has few folds and can be scanned very clearly.

STORYTELLING CUBE; THIS CONTENT WAS ADDED AFTER THE BOOK BECAUSE WHEN I WAS DOING THE LIGHT AT NIGHT, I KNOW HOW IMPORTANT A GOOD STORY WAS. ROBERT MCKEE SAID, "A GOOD STORY IS WORTH TO SPEAKING AND THE WORLD IS WILLING TO LISTEN." I INCREASED THE STORYTELLING CUBE, AND I HOPE THAT CHILDREN CAN EXERCISE THEIR LANGUAGE EXPRESSIONS, AND THEIR IMAGINATION ABILITY, ESPECIALLY THE ENTERTAINMENT ACTIVITIES OF LEFTBEHIND CHILDREN IS ACTUALLY NOT A LOT; STORYTELLING CUBE CAN MAKE THEM MORE OF A GAME.

REFLECTION & SUMMARY

I think it is necessary to record the places worthy of reflection. These reflections also incorporate the suggestions given to me by the teachers. All of these will make me improve with my later write books. 1. It is important to do adequate research. It will lay the foundation for the next creation. 2. There are a lot of places to pay attention to when making a book. If there is a time limit, you must make reasonable arrangements. 3. More reference to similar works will be inspired 4. When drawing an illustration next time, I will consider where the text is placed 5. when layout the book, find a book for reference so that you will not forget the endpaper and other content 6. The use of typefaces in the fonts is not yet very skilful. Next is a look at some of the books in this area. This is a great experience and I am very happy to make out a final book, although there are still many places that need to be revised. But this experience made me gain a lot. I believe the next time I will do better, and also thank my tutorial teacher Clare. She gave me a lot of practical advice and let me improve a lot.

LONDON IS OPEN THE REASON WHY I CHOSE LONDON IS OPEN IS THAT THIS EVENT WILL PROVIDE A GREAT DEAL OF CREATIVE SPACE. ADVERTISING ILLUSTRATIONS ARE ALSO A NEW ATTEMPT. I HOPE TO ACCUMULATE EXPERIENCE THROUGH THIS PROJECT. IN ADDITION TO THE ACCUMULATION OF HIS OWN CREATIVE EXPERIENCE, AS A FOREIGNER WHO FIRST ARRIVED IN LONDON, I ALSO HOPE TO DRAW MY OWN IDEAS ABOUT LONDON. ANOTHER NEED TO PAY ATTENTION IS THE DISPLAY MODE. BECAUSE IT IS IN THE FORM OF BILLBOARDS, IT NEEDS TO TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THEIR ORDER OF DISPLAY. IN THIS PROJECT, THERE ARE MANY SMALL DETAILS THAT NEED TO BE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT, SUCH AS THE RESOLUTION OF THE DISPLAY SCREEN, THE ORDER OF THE NUMBER OF SHEETS REQUIRED, THE BANNER, AND THE PERIPHERAL PRODUCTS, ETC.

T SHOWS THE WORLD THAT LONDON REMAINS ENTREPRENEURIAL, INTERNATIONAL AND FULL OF CREATIVITY AND POSSIBILITY. IT REASSURES THE MORE THAN ONE MILLION FOREIGN NATIONALS WHO LIVE IN LONDON THAT THEY WILL ALWAYS BE WELCOME, AND THAT ANY FORM OF DISCRIMINATION WILL NOT BE TOLERATED. --------- ADIQ KHAN

Here in london, we don’t simply tolerate each other’s differences, we celebrate them. Many people from all over the globe live and work here, contributing to every aspect of life in our city. -Sadiq khan

introduction of original ideas:

Before me brainstorming it, I took a train to Oxford Street in London. Then I wrote down my impression of London. They were: The fusion of ancient architecture and new architecture People in different countries on the street SOHO area’s graffiti culture People’s voices, different accents, languages Different countries Restaurants and supermarkets on both sides of the street......

01

After return home, I began to combine the brief of the competition to sort out my thinking, just as the workers sorted out the wires in the electric box; the location is London. The key word is open, there are really many possibilities. And in the activity request shows that to reflect London is an inclusive and diverse city. in order to demonstrate these characteristics, the pictures need reflect different elements and cultures to reflect it. . I recall my trip to London. I found that London is really open and there are many things to say, but what I need to do is to reduce such a large area. So I started thinking backwards about this issue. What is the benefit of opening London to us? According to my London trip experience, open London will make people feel comfortable. In my own experience, I can buy ingredients and condiments in China town. I can eat in Chinese restaurants, and the taste of his hometown; enthusiasm Londoners tell me how to walk when I lost the way, an open city will make people who drift in a foreign land feel warm and accepted.

IMPROVEMENT IDEAS

THIS IS THE FIRST TIME TO EXCHANGE IDEAS WITH CLASSMATES AND TUTORS. AFTER LISTENING TO THE VARIOUS PRESENTATIONS OF MY CLASSMATES, I FEEL THE AUDIENCE AND THE ORIENTAL CULTURE WHICH I DECIDE DO IS SOMEWHAT NARROW. I WANT TO RE-SELECT A DIRECTION...

RE-SELECTING THE RANGE LET ME DEEPLY CONFUSES, LIKE I HAD JUST PUT THE FISH BACK INTO THE SEA AND NEEDED TO PUT DOWN THE FISHING ROD AGAIN.

In order not to go in the wrong direction, i read the request again and watched the promotion video. One of the names was #londonisopen - not just for christmas title attracted me. This video describes the city of london through different animals. I ask myself can virtual characters help me tell my story or not? The first thing that i can think is the image in movies, but the area seems too big. So i wanted to use my audience to narrow down the scope. I definite my audience: children.

With the fixed audience, i reduced the scope to cartoon characters. . Because my another project is about a book , when i was in london, i went to the bookstore and found a variety of books, it also inspired me,i defined the scope as the character in the fairy tale book. Immediately afterwards, i began to combine the campaign theme with these elements: cultural similarities and differences, different characters from books from different countries I also selected fairy characters from different countries i hope parents and their children will go to oxford street to see these advertisements, which will give them a sense of intimacy and find familiar characters in their memory. As for how to highlight london, i chose several famous locations in london, put in my painting. Among them, the characters which in alice in wonderland and alice through the mirror run through the series and represent local people-londoner.

CULTURAL ELEMENTS AND CHARACTERS SELECTION About select cultural elemis: In order to show that London has various cultural elemis, I use compare similar and differences between London and the other countries’ culture. And I layout several ideas, they are: Dragon’s appearance between east and west Tea culture Hat culture Chess culture First of all, I identify some of the unique cultural elements of the British and London, and then I discovered that these different cultural elements are related to other countries. For example, the afternoon tea culture and the oriental tea culture are similar but different. There are various options for drinking tea in Britain. India, China and Japan’s tea could be found in shopping mail. This is also a kind of cultural diversity reflection. Characters selection: The criteria for character selection in the painting are as follows: Associated with the selected cultural elements Story characters come from books in different countries The characters in “Alice in Wonderland” and “Alice through the Looking -Glass “run through the series and represent the locals - Londoners.

RESEARCH& DRAFTS

01

THE NEXT STEP WAS THE RESEARCH. AT THE BEGINNING, MY IDEA WAS TO CREATE THE CHARACTER IMAGE BASED ON THE DESCRIPTION IN THE BOOK.BUT THERE ARE SOME PROBLEMS WHEN I USE THIS METHOD ,SUCH AS SOME CHARACTERS APPEARANCE DISCRIBE IS NOT ENOUGH,AND WHEN THE DRAFT WAS SHOWED TO PEOPLE, MANY CHARACTERS WHICH I CREATE COULD NOT BE IDENTIFIED, SO I REFERENCE SOME OF THE ILLUSTRATIONS IN THE BOOK AND THE IMAGE OF THE FILM. I HOPE PEOPLE CAN UNDERSTAND AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE.

04

My drafts The content starts with the first picture, On the bookshelf of a bookstore, the characters from the fairy tales with different countries’ book, they go out off the bookstore and walk to liberty store, Piccadilly Square, The British Museum... When you walk in the streets of London, you will find childhood fairy tales which you seen rolling on the screen, it will give people a warm feeling, also reflects the children’s books in different countries can be found in London. I hope that travel people will take their children to the street and see my illustrations, which will give their no stranger feeling. These characters which from different countries’ story books will make parents and children who from different countries feel like home, that book including puss in boots .little red hat...

TRY NEW METHODS: IN ORDER TO SEE THE EFFECT SKETCH , I PRINTED PHOTOS WHICH FROM MYSELF AND THE PICTURES ON THE INTERNET. SOME LARGE BUILDINGS WILL USECOPYPAPER TO DRAW LINES DRAFT AND COLLAGE THEM TOGETHER . THIS WAY MAKES MY DRAWING FASTER THAN BEFORE.

I also picked out some London-specific locations and eventually followed the tour sequence from north to south: starting from the daunt bookstore , the characters ran from the bookstore, they bought mad Hatter’s hat through liberty London, and then crossed Piccadilly circus, then attending a tea party before the British Museum , and then playing chess in the chess room near the London Eye.

Reflection: While I tried to do it well when I was doing this project, the finished product actually has a certain gap with what I think, there are many areas for improvement; for example: 1 There is many things I want being represented in a painting. I do not know how to choose between them. 2 Advertisements need to allow the audience to understand the intentions of the producers within a short period of time. However, I have not yet learned this ability; it is still insufficient to communicate with the viewers. So obviously the next time I do this type of project, still need to learn how to pass the information directly to the viewer. Although this project was not done well, I also gained some experience, such as know the type of print ads and creative methods; more importantly, the importance of time management, hand-painted often take longer than the computer, so the submission time and plan time are also important.I learned how to refine the characters’ characteristics. In addition, my ability to combines brief has also increased.

CREATIVE PRACTITIONER MANIFESTO

what GDCP has done for me ?

Creative practitioner actually is not just in the art area, also in business and education...a creative practitioner just like an explorer, try new things that have ever done. Break the so-called boundaries and get inspiration from different fields, Paper is bounded, but our imagination is limitless, create my imagination kingdom on paper.

Release curiosity like a Mustang release from the fence.try new painting materials: Different pigments, pens, paper... collide with different effects.

My idea not only from what I see and hear but also from my experiences: reference myself experiences, love my life and love painting. And the idea also from my mood, happy, sad or pain.

Traditional things can also bloom new forces through my hand.

Turn off the phone, go out to sketch t the real life. I would rather not draw, refused to plagiarism.

When my work is in front of you, it is not just a painting. It is my inspiration and my experience. It is another adventurous encounter between me and this wonderful world. It is different from the one I used to be; this is what I want to say to you with a silent word.

Do not try to label me, the streets full of labels also makes people feel choke. Not only designed for customers, not just to earn money to feed ourselves; Designed for me to make myself feel happy, Designed for the public to fight and against injustice and injury...

68

Different ways to show my works and ideas, text or pictures, three-dimensional pr plane... Make something different and fresh in our life.

Load fresh material into our brains, cut them, reorganize them, and find that we are not the same as before.

Sincerely treat my life and my works, no muddle along, if don’t like it, try to change it. reference manifesto: The Live Life Manifesto (Holstee) The Make Art Manifesto (Austin Kleon)

•WHO IS MY AUDIENCE? WHO DO I WANT TO DESIGN/MAKE WORK FOR?

01

Although my audience is now children and people who are interested in local culture, I also hope that it will not be limited to this. I hope design for the wider world and try new things in the future.

When you face me like the picture, which balloon you want ...you are the audience of which balloon. At the present stage, one of my audiences is children and young people. Of course, the definition of the preceding words will change, such as left-behind children and blind children. Why I would like to treat them as the audience. Because I have experienced and there are many young people in my life. They will feedback on my work and help me improve, Interacting with them will bring unexpected surprises. Another reason is that sometimes, children and young people, have few world labels and they have a lot of imagination. Also choosing children and young people for the audience also fit my own hobbies, painting style.

•WHOSE PRAISE FOR, OR ACCEPTANCE OF, MY WORK DO I MOST VALUE? According to the current stage, the recognition of my tutorial teacher will make me very satisfied and happy. If I graduate later, become an illustrator or continue my work in painting, I would most like to get the approval of the people in the industry; I hope that both painting techniques and artistic ideology will continue to improve.

03

I once faced a choice. A friend suggested that I give some internet media illustration painting because there is a big market in this area, the general content is simple and cute characters, without too much design and profession skills. Like some movies, there are good-looking images, but don't pay attention to wonderful stories. I refused him without tangling. I know that it is important to be recognized by the market, but I think it is a better choice which is for people in the industry and the market to recognize me with my higher professional skills.

Another audience is people who are interested in local culture. Although I don't have much research on this part, I am interested in it. For example, legends in China, old goods ... If it is an ancient myth, the illustration will make the text more intuitive and the traditional culture will be presented to us in a new posture. Taking this picture as an example, this is like looking at an opposite side. This painting depicts the unique cultural features of Tibet, including unique dances, costumes, and more. So people who like this kind of painting and want to understand the story in the painting are my audience.

COMPARE THE WORKIN THE PAST AND NOWADAYS Compared with the previous works, the media which I use is more diverse, and some works have also been made from the 2D to the three-dimensional. the media I use not just watercolour, but also the colour inks, paper art etc. In the process, the research process longer than before, the reference source also more than before, including the museums and galleries survey and visit. in the expression method, past works more show my ideas about the world, the expression is relatively vague, because I learn the fine art when I was an undergraduate student, my works are more inclined to have a different understanding of each person, let the audience add more their own understanding when they see my works. The works nowadays will have a target audience; the design will be designed for the characteristics of the audience, the method of expression more straightforward.Sometimes I try to guide the audience's thoughts, instead of only saying half as I wanted to say before and the other part let the audience think. In addition, the previous painting method is relatively realistic, and now has the feeling of illustrations. SO WHAT WHAT GDCP HAS DONE FOR ME ? 1. Promote me to try and encourage me to jump out of the comfort zone and explore new things 2. Help me to clarify what I want to do and the direction of future development 3. Give me a lot of good suggestions for my works and let my works improve WHAT ARE MY PARTICULAR STRENGTHS AS A CREATIVE PRACTITIONER? WHAT CAPABILITIES WOULD I PARTICULARLY LIKE TO DEVELOP?

•WHY DO I WANT TO BE AN ARTIST OR DESIGNER? The reason I want to be a designer is very simple, because painting will make me happy and confident. Before I was in high school, I was always shy and poor expression. At that time, painting was also one of the ways expressed me. Later I became cheerful and willing to communicate with people, but painting has become my invisible partner. I would like to let it become my work. When I meet different design themes, it makes me understand many different areas of knowledge. I like this experience.

My speciality is to have certain painting skills, especially water-based materials. What I want to develop is: For the aesthetic and use of fonts, although I can see that different fonts have different personalities, I am not very good at using them; the typographic aesthetics, I often feel that the pages look uncomfortable during typesetting. After making changes back and forth, I found it unsatisfactory, but I couldn't figure out where the problem was. Computer graphics skills, it is an area that I always wanted to try but never touched.

•HOW DO I SEE THE IDENTITY OF THE PROFESSIONAL ARTIST/DESIGNER? •WHAT IS THE ROLE OF THE PROFESSIONAL ARTIST/DESIGNER IN SOCIETY?

4. Let me transition from the fine art profession to the illustration 5. Some changes: Previously, after the completion of my work, the exhibition methods were generally decorated and then hung in the exhibition hall. Now I have learned to edit my works with Photoshop and InDesign, and present my works in the form of collections 6. Learned to pay attention to various display works and complete the details of the collection 7. Improve English in the process of communicating with classmates and teachers 8. Let me be more confident in every new challenge

In my understanding, professional designers have high professional skills, design thinking quick, reasonable planning projects, and can provide professional-level works. I think that the role of designers and artists in society should be to make life easier and more beautiful and that they are also cultural communicators. They find places where life is not satisfactory and use their designs to improve. They may be improving products or even changing people's ideas; their designs bring people a beautiful experience, such as packaging designed products also bring people good mood besides got the products. Some artists' paintings are local cultures, which also promotes the spread of culture.
