Hendricks
Graphic Designer Emily

Hi there!

My name is Emily Hendricks.

I’m a graphic designer and brand manager who has worked professionally as a creative for over 15 years. My first role out of college was in the print industry, which was quite ironic seeing as I was taught in college that print is dying and digital was my only option. That role required me to think outside of the box... literally. I was the new in-house designer for a company that made packaging software and large-format digital die-cutting equipment. It was my job to create projects and trade show booths that highlighted the wide capabilities of the equipment. That meant that everything was custom, everything was a unique shape or able to be made into a 3D object, and everything was created for a purpose - to sell the equipment. This laid the foundation for pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in the print world and taking those concepts into the digital world.

My goal as a designer and a creative or brand manager is to not only continue to ask the question “Why?”, but also strive to answer that question in every brand decision made. Design is intentional. Your brand should be intentional, in all aspects. I thrive in the messy middle of taking differing thoughts and opinions about a brand, project, or event and helping to craft a successful answer and execution.

I currently specialize in being a Jane of many trades for small businesses, especially (but not limited to) those focusing on travel, tourism, or the outdoors industry. I enjoy the opportunity to build or expand a growing brand, create environmental designs for a conference or event, design catalogs or booklets, make swag, build website designs, capture lifestyle or aerial photography and videography, and so much more. My portfolio walks you through the wide variety of examples of work that I have done for a select number of clients.

When it comes to specialties, mine is your brand.

Zarticon Event Design

Project Overview:

Zarticon is a data product user conference hosted by Zartico and aimed at supporting their clients who are all in the Destination Marketing or tourism industry. 2023 was the inaugural event and was hosted in Tampa, Florida. The goal of the conference was to create community and educate the attendees on the ZDOS product while highlighting the destination of Tampa in its branding. My role as lead creative director and designer was to decide on a design direction and execute the wide array of creative projects that are required when hosting an event.

Social Proof Swag

Working within our budget and aiming at differentiating ourselves from other conferences, all attendees received a pair of socks, a travel mug, a sticker sheet, a beach towel, and a quarter zip shirt along with their program for the week all in a branded packing cube (because we all have enough reusable tote bags).

An arctic fox named Mona is the mascot of Zartico and for our first conference, we wanted to have a statement piece that could be reused.

This 3.5-foot-tall 3D arctic fox was designed from scratch and created out of a 1/2" thick paper core material. At the end of the conference, we were able to take it apart and package it into a flat box to send back to our HQ to be used in the future.

Conference Agenda & Workbook

The goal of the 2024 Zarticon was to bring creativity and data research together. One of the ways that we accomplished this was to provide a coloring book/bullet journal style workbook and an art kit to every attendee. On day 1 of the conference, they were greeted with both items sitting on their table. We had one of the first sessions led by our resident visual notetaking expert to inform everyone about the goal of the workbook.

Each spread was broken down by half a day and held prompts around what was being spoken about that day. There were coloring sections to promote doodling, and the back was a full coloring page with the same design as the community art project (more on that later).

Award Design

While creating the details about the award ceremony for 2024, the Zartico marketing team wanted to create a "Golden Mona" award. To keep this project within budget, we worked with a vendor, and we created a 3D-printed golden fox design on a wooden platform with printed aluminum name plaques. Yes - the same 3D Mona from 2023 was used again!

Community Art Project

Inspired by our keynote speaker who was going to speak about taking everyday objects and making art with them, we created a community art project that we called a sticker-by-number that was available for all attendees to contribute to throughout the conference. The idea was to take an easily accessible item (dot label stickers) and create art together.

My role was to create the art itself, decide the colored sticker dots that would be used, and ensure the whole project would work. I decided on the fox outline, then created the coloring book style art with different elements that represented Charlotte, North Carolina (the host) along with some elements that represented Zartico's data product. Each area had a number in it that referenced one color of sticker dot in a variety of sizes. Attendees took time together during breaks to apply stickers and check in on the progress.

Swag

The goal for swag at the 2024 Zarticon event was to continue our delight and uniqueness from the previous year. All attendees received a pair of socks, a sticker sheet, a puzzle, a silicone tumbler, and a full-zip fleece jacket all in a branded packing cube (to continue their collection of packing cubes from the previous year). We used extra puzzles during networking times to have an activity for attendees to do while they were connecting.

Grey Duck Outdoor

Project Overview:

Grey Duck Outdoor is a Minnesota-based Canoe & SUP company. They believe in the power of connecting with nature, time with family and friends, and exploring often. Grey Duck designs are clean, classic, and functional - things that never go out of style.

Grey Duck came to me with a logo already created and looking for help in growing their brand. Over the years, we built their brand guidelines, grew a photo/video library with a team of brand ambassadors and myself, updated their website, created yearly dealer catalogs, designed signs and trade show supplies, designed one-sheeters, helped develop new swag, brought social media campaigns to life, and more.

As their go-to designer, I’ve been able to design a wide variety of projects and can jump in and help when it’s needed. While our relationship started by taking a logo that was already created and helped refine and elevate the brand across multiple domains, it has continued with each new season which has brought new marketing challenges.

Deliverables:

• Catalog Design

• Various Graphic Design Projects

• Website Design

• Videography

• Marketing and Brand Consulting

• Social Media Graphics

• Trade Show Supplies and Signage

• Swag Design

• Product Hang Tags

Website Redesign

One major project I worked on with Grey Duck Outdoor was a website redesign. The original website was designed simply to sell paddle boards, but it lacked in telling its story.

The redesign centered around highlighting boards and canoes but led with their new-at-the-time slogan of "Different by Design". The homepage led with their brand story and worked to begin putting different board designs into categories of who they were designed for. All pages of the website were redesigned with beauty, simplicity, and timelessness in mind.

Visit Saint Paul

Project Overview:

Visit Saint Paul is the official convention & visitors bureau for Minnesota's capital city of Saint Paul with a mission to generate economic growth for Saint Paul by effectively marketing the RiverCentre campus, Saint Paul, and the region as a preferred convention and tourism destination.

I worked with Visit Saint Paul as their in-house creative for almost 5 years. My areas of responsibility included fulfilling graphic design projects, creating videos to highlight the city and events, and taking promotional photos of the city and events. Together with the marketing and membership team, we tackled yearly marketing campaigns, partnered with companies like Red Bull to organize and execute events, promoted our memberships to local businesses, produced our yearly Insider’s Guide, provided photography for the Insider’s Guide, managed the website and blog, and more.

Awards:

• 30 Under 30 in 2017 Issued by Destinations International and Searchwide

• 2019 Explore Minnesota Tourism Award for Best Branding and Integrated Marketing Campaign – Insider’s Guide

The Visit Saint Paul Insiders Campaign was created with the goal of inspiring and emotionally connecting with travelers through the experiences and recommendations of Insiders—local “experts” with a passion for Saint Paul. Insiders are selected according to how they fit into the campaign’s overarching Saint Paul story, with a great deal of attention paid to representing a mix of age, gender, race, cultural background, sexual orientation, family status, and interests. Our 2018-2019 campaign focuses on key themes from Visit Saint Paul’s 2017 perception research: family-friendly activities, sports, shopping, arts and culture, history, and architecture.

Each Insider agreed to be featured throughout the campaign via photo, video, and transcribed interviews in which they share their favorite things about the city. In addition to showcasing this content in our annual Insider Guide, we used it to build an Insider’s microsite on VisitSaintPaul.com. The microsite houses the Insider video series, which is regularly shared along with the longer transcribed interviews on Visit Saint Paul’s social media accounts.

Deliverables:

• Graphic Design

• Annual Report Deisgn

• Videography

• Photography

• Swag

• Trade Show and Conference Booth Signage

Minnesota State Fair Booth

Each year, Visit Saint Paul hosted an informational booth at the Minnesota State Fair where volunteers would hand our Insider’s Guides or be available to answer any Saint Paul-specific questions. Our goal was to create an interactive space that would invite people in to take photos they could share and tag with our hashtag of #MYSAINTPAUL.

Year 1:

- Full floor vinyl

- Rigid wall with custom cut giraffe stand-out as a photo opportunity

- Retractable banner

- Rigid back wall sign

- Swag (drawstring backpacks)

Year 2:

- Fabric, collapsable (and reusable) backdrop as a photo opportunity

- Custom paper core bar for volunteers to sit at to invite conversation

- Tablecloth

- Source flooring to fit in budget

The backdrop design was continuously refined and used throughout the years for Visit Saint Paul. We also partnered with Meet Minneapolis and Visit Bloomington to create a large backdrop for their joint IMEX booth.

Circus Juventas is the largest performing arts youth circus school in North America. They are a non-profit organization that has hundreds of students take classes each year and perform an extraordinary show every summer and winter.

My role in this projects was to design and create the overall vision of how the show was going to be represented.
