GRANT SUPPORT: ACTIVE GRANT SUPPORT PI- S McCombe Waller 9/01/14 0 6/30/15 TEDCO $ 53,540 Hierarchical Capacitive Sensor for Gesture Recognition This project in collaboration with Engineers at UMBC will develop and test with individuals with spinal cord injury the use of a novel capacitive sensor that can activate environmental controls (switches) with gestures. The primary aim of the student is to determine feasibility of use of this sensor in individuals with spinal cord injury who are primary wheelchair users. Co-I SMcCombe Waller NIA B3688R Renewal (Macko) 10/01/05-09/30/16 0.24 calendar VA Center of Excellence $900,000 Task Oriented Exercise and Robotics in Neurological Disease The mission of the VA RR&D Maryland Exercise & Robotics Center of Excellence (MERCE) is to develop and test new rehabilitation therapies to improve physical function, fitness, and cardiovascular health for Veterans with stroke and other neurological disability conditions. Our research models emphasize motor learning and progressive task-practice to improve gait, balance, and upper extremity function, exercise rehabilitation to improve fitness, skeletal muscle structure and function, cardiovascular health and related elements of cognitive function, and principals of engineering and biomechanics to advance robotics assisted rehabilitation. Bench-tobedside research investigating mechanisms of brain plasticity, cognitive motor neuroscience, muscle biology

and metabolism is conducted in parallel with the exercise and robotics interventions to advance knowledge in rehabilitation science.
