This merchant passport, issued 17 years after the founding of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay, was granted to the captain of a merchant ship departing the Port of Montevideo for Paranagua, Brazil. This was issued during the Civil War, and Suarez controlled only the city of Montevideo. The second signature is of Lorenzo Battle, who served as the Minister of War and Navy. Both the wax seals on the front and the back are well-preserved.
