THE ICONIC: ICE-CREAM CHARLIE There was almost a collective cheer from the city when the ‘Ice-Cream Charlie’ Vanilla Ices truck returned to the central city following an all-too-long absence after the quakes; little surprise, since as a collected urban population, we’ve been ravenously craving their secret recipe since 1907. Original proprietor and legendary local figure Sali Mahomet began selling ice creams in 1903, and perfected his homegrown formulations for vanilla ice and fruit syrups four years later; current owners and proprietors the Taylors (just the 4th set of owners in the history of the century-old business) are still banging out old Sali’s trusted and much-loved recipe today. It’s just not summer without getting a couple of these down you; look out for the iconic truck on sunny days at its regular spot on Armagh Street next to Victoria Square.

BEACH DAZE The sun is shining, the mercury is rising, and thoughts are turning coastwards – things have ‘beach day’ written all over them. But before you head out, there are some common courtesies you’ll want to observe if you don’t want to end up buried neck deep and facing an incoming tide. First of all, give people some space, and keep beach games away from crowds. You may be surprised at just how little your amazing catch counts for with the people who find your elbow in their bacon and egg pie. “I love the feeling of sand hitting my face!” has been said by no-one ever, so pay attention to the wind when shaking things out – and don’t clomp closely past sunbathers in your sand-flicking jandals, either. Another important thing to keep out of people’s faces: your PDA. Holding hands is fine; macking on your significant other – not so much. When it’s time to head home, you shouldn’t need a rubbish bin sign to remind you to be a tidy Kiwi. When in doubt: treat the beach like you’re in someone else’s backyard – not your own. And swim between the flags!

DON’T GIVE UP YOUR DAY JOB Cityscape’s editor Isaac Wilson gets his brew on with a day with the beer maestros at Three Boys Brewery. It’s 7am on a Wednesday and I’m up on the balls of my feet pouring a 25 kilo bag of malt into a mill high up in the roof space at Three Boys Brewery. It’s not quite the start I imagined, but I’m super stoked to be here rocking what is, for many (myself included), the holy grail of dream jobs – even after Eli advises we still have 13 bags of secret recipe malts to empty. It’s the second brew day of a 3,600 litre batch of Three Boys’ legendary IPA, which I’m calling ‘Isaac’s Personal Ale’ – hoping it’ll become a thing – as the crushed malt is mixed with hot water in the kettle below us, sprouting and releasing their sugars. While this is ‘mashing’, we get to work cleaning out the 1,800-litre tank the mix will be transferred to in the next phase where, upon boiling, five kinds of hops will be added at specific times during a 90 minute countdown – no surprises then that head brewer Ralph is a scientist as well as a beer guru. He informs me that cleaning is 80% of the job as I learn we’ll soon be shovelling the spent grains out of the kettle into a farmyard-bound trailer which is bartered for eggs and occasional cuts of pork. Later on it’s a hose forest as we pump the brew through a heat exchanger and into fermenter number 8, where it joins the previous day’s batch. While it’s not as tasting-based as I’d hoped, it’s still one of the more kick-ass jobs about and I can’t wait to crack into my first brew – in three to four weeks’ time. www.threeboysbrewery.co.nz

life hacks THE ultimate party playlist Your famous party-starting punch is on standby – but what about the music? A properly prepared party playlist can make the difference between an epic all-nighter for the ages and ruefully wondering what you’re going to do with 200 un-consumed jelly shots. Generally speaking, good party music is upbeat and doesn’t need its audience’s full attention. Depressing songs – no matter how popular – should be avoided unless you're trying to pull the pin. Top 40 and celebrity playlists on iTunes and Spotify are a good place to start, and pop hits and classics are going to go off after a few drinks. This isn’t the time for a ‘musical education’ either, hipster; lean towards songs most people will recognise. Timing is everything: wait for a few people to show up before kicking into it, and don’t start skipping songs 40 seconds in either – everyone hates that person (seriously)! And if you want to encourage dancing (and you do), set tracks to crossfade – it's called dead air for a reason, and a total party killer.

SURVIVAL GUIDE

WEDDINGS With wedding season upon us, many will be kissing goodbye endless weekends as loved-up friends and family members tie the knot – surviving this expensive social mine field, however, is a whole other ball game.

You’ve been expecting it, and when the invitation arrives you’re quickly checking your planner to see if it conflicts with another wedding or any overseas travel plans. In the clear? Time to figure out what you’re going to wear – what are the chances anyone will remember the outfit you wore to Suzy and John’s nuptials last spring? Pretty good, actually; damn you social media! Keep 'em guessing with an eye-catching accessory (not a fedora – sorry guys) to throw them off. Giftwise you’ve probably pushed the ‘bottle of champagne and Hungry Hungry Hippos’ combo as far as possible, so aim to spend around the cost of them hosting you (and don’t try and drink your gift back either, lest you want to be dodging daggers from the bride’s old man all night). On the day you want to arrive before the bride or expect to be on the receiving end of all kinds of scorn. Be sure to compliment the bride; sure she might look like Shrek in a dress, but today she’s the most beautiful woman in the room. Spend time with elderly and young relos early on, then keep your distance – you don’t want to wind up sozzled, arm around Gran and slurring out the classic retort to Billy Idol’s ‘Mony Mony’ come midnight. Oh, and single groomsmen and bridesmaids are fair game after 10pm...

Christchurch takes its coffee very seriously – in fact, we probably have one of the highest proportions of coffee-roasters-per-population on the planet. With that in mind, Cityscape stepped up its neverending pursuit of the perfect cup of coffee and caught up with the people behind the grinds who are blending and roasting the city’s favourite coffees. From the fine art of selecting and blending beans through to the importance of origin and the alchemy of precision roasting, Cityscape discovers what goes into Christchurch’s premium coffees. 18

“Anyone can roast coffee beans; the skill is getting up to 7 different single origins each individuallyroasted to perfection and masterfully blended to create a really great cup of coffee,” says Hummingbird Coffee’s general manager Nick Cowper. “I think it’s important to have a wide range of unique, special and, above all, memorable coffees. It could be a beautiful single origin, or a complex blend.” Having spent more than half his life in the coffee business (16 years), roasting is in the blood for Nick, who puts the family’s roastery success down to starting with a great product. “Everything starts with the product. We’ve been dealing with same growers for 14 – 15 years, heading over at harvest time to sort, cup and choose the best possible coffees we can.” This pursuit includes becoming the first company to import Fair Trade organic coffee beans into the country, and their recent certification in becoming 100 per cent organic. Despite being one of the city’s bigger operators (Oomph! is the number one selling fresh coffee in the country), the Cowper clan has resisted temptation to go larger, maintaining a boutique nature with 2 x 60-kilo roasters to retain control of the product. “Everything is done in small lots – it’s very hands on.” And like many roasters, they don’t stop at the bean trade, providing espresso

equipment, machinery and its servicing, along with barista training. Coffee roasting is also a family trade for Vivace Espresso director/ roaster Bernard Smith, whose parents set up the city’s first coffee roasters Browne and Heaton on Cashel Street in the 1940s. Founding Vivace in 1997 with a small roaster and café on Hereford Street, Bernard would barista during the days and roast beans at night – fast forward

“Coffee is an agricultural product. It's a lot like wine, some years are better than others.” – Bernard Smith

18 years and Vivace coffee is being drunk around the country. Describing their roasting as “purist”, Bernard roasts origins individually and then creates recipes that are complementary. “Every bean is different and we roast each origin to its optimum. Coffee is an agricultural product. It’s a lot like wine, some years are better than others.” Their roasting technique comes down to temperature, time

and sound – “hearing those cracks”, says Bernard. That method is out for Dan Brown (el capitano) and Lewis Fitzgerald (head roaster) at Underground Coffee Company, though. Because they utilise Christchurch’s only fluidised hot air roasting machine – one of the noisiest (and most expensive) roasting routes – the 100-decibel racket the machine makes means Lewis wears ear muffs and is unable to hear the coffee beans cracking as drum roasters do. Instead he relies on precision timing and heat to achieve the perfect roast, with numerous trials, tastings and notes to ensure the coffee is at its peak. A qualified chef and avid homebrewer of spirits, Lewis uses these skills and extensive hands-on experimentation to draw out the subtle flavours. Air-roasting coffee, says Dan, is all about investing in bringing flavour and control, allowing for cleaner, sweeter flavours and giving subtle nuances a chance to come to the fore. “With air-roasted coffee you taste the coffee, not the roaster. It’s the air that roasts the coffee, not the surface of the roaster. So the coffee has a very clean taste that is intensely aromatic.” At Underground their beans are pre-blended and roasted together, and then aged/ degassed for 3 – 5 days. They offer twice weekly delivery – although it has a shelf life of 14 days, they prefer www.cityscape-christchurch.co.nz

their coffee to be used within a week to maintain integrity – as well as barista training and coffee machine maintenance. “It’s all about putting great coffee into people’s hands.” The desire to put great coffee into people’s hands saw Aaron Lee and Mike Turland of New City Coffee release their signature blend Blackbird following the earthquakes. The pair started roasting for the family’s Café Metro venues and Strawberry Fare restaurant to take more control of their product and deliver a consistent cup of coffee. They’re now serving up to 6,000 cups a week at these outlets from their copper, 10-kilo roaster next door to the Strawberry Fare Bake School behind The Tannery, along with selling take-home packaged coffee. A pre-blend of Columbian, Brazilian and Papua New Guinea Rainforest Alliance Arabica beans, Blackbird is a fruit-driven coffee with a natural sweetness. “One of our regular customers only drinks our coffee as it’s the only coffee he can drink without having to put sugar into it,” says Aaron, a trained chef. Roasted beans are degassed for 24 hours, then bagged on day 3, with the coffee consumed between days 5 and 6, says Aaron. Small batch roasting ensures greater control and consistency of the end product, while regular cupping, quality control and innovations are ongoing. “Experimentation and working out

underground coffee company

the chemistry of creating the perfect coffee is the fun side of the coffee business,” says Aaron. For Bink Bowler, director at Black & White Coffee Cartel, roasting was a natural progression. “I would say I am more a ‘coffee specialist’. For the past 10 years I have been studying and playing with coffee, through tasting, brewing and research I naturally picked up how to roast.” Preferring a light roast (“roasting coffee dark is the 'old way'”), he lets the coffee speak for itself. “When you roast dark you just taste a roast profile, no matter how amazing the coffee is. When we roast golden brown, true coffee flavour comes out – smooth, sweet, yummy coffee,” says Bink. Included in the raw beans the team at Black & White source are the expensive and rare Nicaraguan honey process and some of the world’s highest-grown coffee off Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. Whatever you order, a unique coffee experience and education is the aim, says Bink. “We pride ourselves on connecting coffee with people.” Supplying their growing chain of Yellow Rocket coffee and bagel outlets was what prompted husband and wife team Deb and Ian Riach of Coffee Worx to branch out into coffee roasting. “We bought an existing roastery in 2007 and rebranded it as Coffee Worx, a coffee roastery and supply company, but

in the roast

coffee worx

we soon realised it was a standalone business and, after losing our whole Yellow Rocket chain in the earthquakes, it has become the full focus of our energy.” Using a Turkish roaster, the Riach’s roast 8 different blends (many of which are award-winning) alongside improving people’s knowledge and understanding of how to make quality espresso. “We spend a lot of time with our customers to help them get an appreciation of how to make their coffee offer a successful part of their business mix,” says Deb. “The secrets to great espresso are respect for the product you are using and a desire to perfect your understanding of the volatile nature of this incredible elixir!” Look out for a new espresso bar from Coffee Worx in Sockburn, in conjunction with celebrity chef Richard Till, who they’ll be sharing a building with. Keeping things on the smaller scale, micro coffee roasters David Pai and Andy Norman’s Coffee Embassy shares space inside Cafe Lumes, which, alongside sibling café Little

Merchants, serves their highly sought after brew. According to Andy, their coffee is selected based on what they want to drink using in-season beans that are “cupping amazing”. “Our philosophy is pretty simple: fresh and interesting is best, which means we change up our bean offerings based on the ever changing seasonal coffee harvests throughout the world,” he says. “Our aim is to bring people an exceptional coffee experience through sharing our experience of over 20 years

collectively in the coffee industry. We source, import, and roast coffee that is exciting to drink and share but, more importantly, is traded directly with traceability.” Fuelled by passion, addiction, caffeine and the pursuit of creating the perfect cup of coffee, Switch Espresso’s managing director Hamish Evans fed his love of coffee by sampling it around the globe before getting more directly involved. Starting with his New Brighton site 10 years ago, he has amassed a onestop coffee empire (bean roasting and supply, machinery and servicing, barista training and café layout and design) comprising 32 staff across 3 sites, including coffee kingpin Black Betty’s Café. His advice for this considering entering the market? “You have to be passionate about your product and love every element of it if you’re going to survive”. Passion, along with curiosity, led C4 Coffee husband and wife team Guy and Paula Griffith-Jones to start their own roastery 20 years ago. “We started a café and were getting our coffee down from Auckland and thought, ‘what if?’,” says Guy. During that time coffee has changed, and is ever evolving, he says. “Coffee used to be a block commodity; now people are out-sourcing for rare and interesting coffees that might not be available every year.” Coffee’s cup runneth over locally? Not likely! Christchurch is clearly a city that will take as much awesome coffee as it can get its hands on!

THE RISE OF COLD BREW COFFEE With cold brew coffee booming overseas, get ready to sip this exquisite, time-consuming beverage over the summer. Vivace released Brewista earlier this year; the result of ground beans kept steeping in cold water for 18 hours, stored in kegs and dispensed by nitrogen. Keep an eye out for coldfiltered bottled versions from New City Coffee and Coffee Embassy coming out over summer, too. www.cityscape-christchurch.co.nz

Euro fusion Strawberry Fare Combining the influences of Italy, France and … Scandinavia (courtesy of their totally boss home cured salmon gravlax!) Strawberry Fare is rightly famous for its primo desserts, but there’s a reason their exceptional duck confit of slow-cooked duck leg, parsley butter, jus, thymeroasted potatoes, and fresh buttered green beans has achieved cult status on the Christchurch dining scene – you owe it to your taste buds to eat it! Large enough to develop numerous regional styles of cuisine within its own borders, the US has developed a reputation for food with big, bold flavours (and often equally big servings!). With an overall attitude that could be summarised as “if it tastes good, do it”, American culinary exports the likes of New York-style steak, Creole/Cajun dishes, the southern border MexiAmerican mash-up of the Tex-Mex school, the larger-than-life tradition of Texan BBQ, and American-style cooked breakfasts are popular the world over.

USA Boo Radley’s Food & Liquor A relaxed late night venue with a speakeasy vibe, Boo Radley’s sharing plates take their inspiration from the cuisine of the American South (the Harper Lee-esque name’s a dead giveaway). You’ll want to share several around; to make sure you go authentically Cajun, tuck into the Lowcountry seafood gumbo with soft-shell crab and ‘Hoppin’ John’ (a traditional southern rice dish) – laissez les bons temps rouler! New York Deli Holding out for a hero? Then you need to tap the gigantic proportions of New York Deli’s legendary premium sandwiches. You’ll want to try the spice-rubbed flank steak bounty of

AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 RESTAURANTS Harlem flank and the presidentiallytitled Obama BLT – streaky bacon goodness with prerequisite American mustard. Orleans Set amid Christchurch’s ragin’ Cajun quarter (Strange’s Lane) Orleans channels some serious Bourbon Street swagger. Hearty Creole soul food is the order of the day – you’ll want to be ordering up the complete jerk chicken. Make sure you’re not dining alone when you tackle this whole jerk-spice marinated freerange chicken, split flat, chargrilled to perfection and served with burnt avocado and tomatillo salsa. Burgers and Beers Inc. Americanstyle diner and Kiwiana collide in this revolutionary bastion of bodacious burgers. It’s like walking onto the set of Natural Born Killers sans all the murder – bitchin’ Munsters-esque art joins classic Kiwi formica tables and quite possibly the city’s best burger, the aptly named Super Bugger Burger. You’ll be wanting to try the epic chips and gravy and to wash it down with an icy Three Boys golden ale (when in Rome). Gas Monkey Playing on the primate theme, while this quirky Tex-Mex American grill is literally teeming with monkey business via simian sculptures, images and object d’art, it boasts an impressive breakfast, lunch and dinner menu with a devoted milkshake section that includes the magnificent creation that is the Joy Bar in shake form(!).

But you came here to eat, so you’ll wanna hit up menu highlight pineapple-braised pork belly with apple brandy caramel.

... the US has developed a reputation for food with big, bold flavours ... Bloody Mary’s A classic, New York style steakhouse experience right here in Christchurch, Bloody Mary’s is a brooding, sophisticated space of dark oak and buttery leather where they take steaks very seriously (along with Bloody Marys!). Discover this for yourself by ordering the Hereford prime 50-day aged, grass finished, 500g New York strip loin, and melt into meat-lover’s heaven. Other US-of-A offerings include Drexels, Bootleg BBQ, and Lower 9th Diner.

Central and South America The fiery spices and tang of Latin American food are unmistakable. Maize is the staple ingredient in the region, but its uses are as diverse as the continent itself – everything from tortillas to tacos, Colombian and Venezuelan arepas to Salvadorian pupusas – and the piquant spices and salsas of the region such such as guacamole, pico de gallio, mole, chili and many more have become foodie favourites the world over.

Latin America Casa Publica A rum-flavoured ode to the South America of years gone by, Casa Publica has a kitchen that turns out a range of options to satisfy any palate, offering the unique flavours of the continent. You get plenty of these on one plate with the pollo a la parrilla – grilled chicken with fried red quinoa, onions, garlic, kernel corn, capsicum, chili sauce and guacamole verde – and the choc rum shot finale is not to be missed! Tequila Mockingbird A contemporary Latin fusion bar, restaurant and later, hot party venue, Tequila Mockingbird offers dishes inspired by the food of Brazil, Chile, Peru, the Caribbean islands and then some – a great place to start is the churrasco style skirt steak, which takes Argentina’s most celebrated beef cut, treats it to a bath in their own mojo marinade and serves it up with lemon and addictive patatas bravas. The Cuban With the aim of bringing a slice of Havana to the central city, The Cuban is another new city venue where rum is taken extremely seriously, and speciallybrewed-for-the-venue Cuban Laga flows from militia-style machine gun beer taps. AFRICA Somewhat unfairly neglected by much of the rest of the world for a long time, Africa’s cuisine has more recently grabbed some of the increased attention it has always deserved within the international culinary scene. The traditional North African flavours of Morocco, Egypt and Algeria in particular are now well known and appreciated by foodies all over the world, but the considerable regional varieties of the rest of the vast, culturally diverse landmass are also increasingly finding their way onto menus elsewhere around the world, from Mozambique’s (via Portugal) piri piri chicken to South African biltong, East Africa’s kachumbari and West Africa’s jollof rice. Taste of Egypt Taste of Egypt brims with authentic Egyptian flavours with a twist and utilises locally-sourced and seasonably available produce. Owner-chef Saeed makes a biennial trip back to the home country to refresh his skills and update his knowledge of the Egyptian food scene. Tap their triple lamb souvlaki with feta, hot chilli, humus, tahini, tzatziki and Turkish salad and become a convert after one bite. Continue your African adventure at Mosaic By Simo and Casbah.

Continuing its world domination as the in vogue tipple de jour, the juniper berry-led revolution is flying high with the release of the Great British Gin Collection’s right royal trio: Opihr (RRP $49.99), Bloom (RRP $49.99) and Berkeley Square (RRP $84.99). Distilled by G&J Distillers, the oldest distillery in the UK, the frightfully fresh triplets combine old world charm with modern sass and nous. Perfect for summer sippin’ – kick your next G&T up a notch or two with a slice of fresh ginger to awaken the oriental spices in Opihr, capture the delicate floral notes with fresh strawberries in Bloom, and live large with basil or a lemon twist in ultra-premium mac daddy Berkeley Square – raise your glass to long summer afternoons. www.beamsuntory.com www.cityscape-christchurch.co.nz

But excellent news – they’re now back where they belong! Their fully refurbished building is a truly fierce combination of the old and the new and now houses even more of their vegetarian wholefood goodness. www.pikowholefoods.co.nz

WELLBEING

The Good Life WITH DR LIBBY

In all my years working with people on an individual level or in a group, regardless of their age, sex or current health status, there is often one thing that unifies people’s health and wellness goals – energy and the desire for more. When you ask someone how they are, the most common response I tend to hear is “tired, so tired”. And hence our reliance on caffeine and refined sugars – or anything – that gives us more energy increases. If we think of our daily energy as a bank account, it’s easier to consider what ‘adds’ or ‘takes’ our energy. Energy supplies us with the power to function, grow, heal and regenerate ourselves daily. We are designed, however, to supplement this original endowment of energy with what we generate from eating, breathing, sleeping, working, playing, learning and relationships. Each day we make withdrawals and deposits; we invest or deplete. And when the balance of the scales tips in the direction of us using more than we put back in, we begin to live in the red, with the potential of falling further and further behind. To keep the currency analogy going, we are then forced to dip into our savings. When we continuously withdraw from our savings account, alarm bells can begin to sound, telling us that our survival is being challenged. These alarms present to us as symptoms in the body, often of the type that don’t initially lead us to stay home from work … so we soldier on and often do nothing about them. There are many reasons why our energy can be depleted which I explore in Exhausted to Energized; these can be biochemical, nutritional or emotional – and are normally a combination of all three. www.drlibby.com

Top 5 tips for more energy now 1 Work on closing what I call ‘open tabs’ – unresolved tasks and jobs. It’s as if we walk around each day with so many tabs open in our brains – like tabs sitting open on your computer or phone. It’s no wonder we feel drained or flattened. 2 Incorporate more resistance training or muscle building exercise. More muscle means more energy-producing mitochondria in our cells – resulting in a higher metabolic rate, which assists with body fat management as well as energy production. Naturally you gain better energy reserves as your glycogen (glucose stores) increases, as well. 3 Explore your immune system function; whether this is your susceptibility to viruses or infections, glandular fever or hay fever, anything that triggers your immune system into fighting these infections/ reactions can be fatiguing. 4 Be conscious of how your perceptions influence your mood and energy state. Write a list of what makes you feel alive and energised, and what saps your energy – your ‘energy vampires’. Actively work on doing more of the things that make you feel energised, while reducing your energy vampires. 5 Stop sitting on energy! Studies show that some adults spend an enormous 11 hours a day sitting on their bottoms. Those hours tend to be clocked up working at a desk job, commuting to and from work, watching television, or at the computer. Too much sitting isn’t good for health or energy. Move every hour!

Christchurch Here & Now

Cityscape taps the genius of Pascha therapist and spiritual teacher Jonathan Spark on the secrets of living in the now. Living in the moment: a genuine and possible experience? Or another spiritual ideal that leaves you feeling there is one more thing you need to get right to be happy? Like all paths to happiness, living in the moment is both a promise and a practice. The promise is that yes, you can find peace and contentment in any moment when enough of your consciousness is present. The practice is that this grows and becomes more your daily reality as you recognise the ongoing invitation to be present to the moment. You will find your mind will resist this with protests; it is too simple, how can everything you need be in a moment, you need to do something more! Your mind, by design, is busy solving a future that has not happened and resolving a past that has left you feeling less than your true self. These things matter and are not to be dismissed, but the answers you really seek lie with the moment; in this moment and in any moment, the more you feel, the more you will experience the full wonder of a conscious moment, with all its holographic slice of human life captured within in it. To experience this, breathe. Turn to your breath and breathe in, receive consciously, then experience a conscious breath out and feel the letting go. In these moments you capture life, its rhythms, cycles and constant flow. Like life, a moment is not a fixed point of stillness; it is not the now, it is a moment of now, it is the stillness within you that feels the flow of one moment to the next, moving forward in your life, and inviting you to feel the miracle and joy that is you. www.pascha.co.nz

SUMMER STUNNER

Cityscape taps into the latest fitness and health trends to rock your most stunning summer yet. NATURAL BEAUTY

CROSSING OVER

Wondering how Channing Tatum and the cast of Magic Mike got so ripped? It’s all about the CrossFit, says CrossFit Trailblazer’s Kyp Kotzikas. Putting stock in strength and endurance – aerobics this ain’t – CrossFit is all about measurable, observable, and repeatable results. Tackling a combination of lifting heavy objects, body weight movements, and monostructural-based cardio activities such as running, rowing, or jumping rope, CrossFitters are put through a series of exercises in a certain amount of time and the results (see HIIT It p92) are epic! What’s more, leveraging group dynamics, the bootcamp-style workouts create a super-competitive yet super-supportive space, and sees everyone digging in and achieving their goals. www.crossfittrailblazer.com

FULLY MINT(ED) The holistic health and fitness gurus at Mint Whole Body Health & Fitness rock a one-stop-shop. With a staff of professional personal trainers, a fully-equipped gym, and an on-site professional nutritionist, they also offer clean-eating café Pure Café Co., which eschews sugar, salt, butter, additives, preservatives and trans fats (and pretty much anything processed!) with their nutrient-dense creations. In fact, the Mint experience is unlike any other health and nutrition facility! Their unique approach combines industryleading training with basic body measurements, macro calculations and meal planning with advanced BIA profiling and intolerance testing to redesign your body and awaken your potential. www.mintfit.co.nz

Beauty ingredient of the moment active charcoal has a long history of medicinal use; its millions of pores can bind harmful agents and prevent their absorption by the body, which has led to its widespread use as a treatment for poisoning. The theory in beauty therapy’s the same; the charcoal in products like face masks and cleansers acts like a magnet to attract and absorb dirt, oil, and the pure evil that can lurk in your pores. This helps to fight breakouts, reduce inflammation, and leave your skin looking fresher. You can even use the jet-black charcoal to help whiten your teeth!

Barre workouts, which take their lead from the warm-up exercises performed by ballet dancers – and you know that’s a well-fit profession – have hit phenomenon levels in 2015, gaining great swathes of grippysocks-wearing devotees. Borrowing ballet’s wall-fixed barre, the workout creates long, lean muscles, tighter abs and toned arms, and increased flexibility – what’s not to love here?

TAKE A BREATH Feeling stressed – don’t forget to breathe, advises Dr Libby. Diaphragmatic breathing activates the parasympathetic nervous system, which allows our bodies to go into rest and repair mode – essential for immune function, digestion, restful sleep and a great mood – as it communicates to every cell in your body that you are safe. We cannot access this part of our nervous system with our thoughts; only via how we breathe. It is amazing what our bodies can do with just a few minutes of calming, diaphragmatic breathing each day. www.drlibby.com 90

Yet to try Yoga? You’ve doubtless already got people in your social circle preaching all the benefits of the this ancient physical, mental, and spiritual practice at you, so you probably don’t need us to let you know how good it is for your flexibility, fitness, and overall wellbeing – what you need is to finally take the plunge and start reaping the benefits, slacker! Based on the tradition of Anusara yoga with elements of Vinyasa flow and therapeutic yoga, Grassroots Yoga & Health offers a physical alignment-based practice and flow yoga aimed at creating awareness in the body. Over at Flow Hot Yoga, different levels of heated classes (Yin at 30°C, Power Vinyasa at 36°C and Hot Flow at 40°C) provide optimal therapeutic benefits to help purify body and mind, and it’s hot over at Bikram Yoga Christchurch too, where they take a structured approach via the 26 formalised exercises of the Bikram school of yoga, practised in a room heated to 38°C.

Looking to lose fat, preserve muscle, and improve your cardiovascular health, but don’t have the time to spend hours in the gym each day? Then you need to tap into super High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), says Heritage Health Club’s personal trainer Syaz Salim. Perfect for the time poor (we’re talking 15 – 30 minutes here), a HIIT programme combines intense intervals of high impact exercise with low to moderate exercise. Because the intensity is higher (and this is the key, you really need to go hard or go home here!) you get a much better cardio workout, increasing your aerobic and anaerobic endurance and burning more fat. It’s all about keeping your body on its (metaphorical) toes; when you do a cardio session at a consistent pace, your body goes into what is called ‘steady state’, adjusting itself to this speed so it can conserve energy – HIIT avoids this by confusing the body. Research shows that the benefits of HIIT include increasing your metabolic rate for up to 24-hours after exercise, improving insulin sensitivity in the muscles (which makes your body use the food you eat, rather than storing it as fat), elevating growth hormone and catecholamine levels (precursors to fat burning), and decreasing post-exercise appetite. So what are you waiting for? www.heritagehealthclub.co.nz

Most new furniture is influenced by design from the past, especially in the case of mid-century modern. The classic clean lines are very architectural, and tend to sit well in a modern house. The trick to mixing old and new is to focus on quality over quantity and find a visual connection with the pieces; mix antique, new and mid-century together with a common thread of wood colour, pattern or shape. Re-upholstering older pieces is another way of personalising your furniture and connecting it with other elements in the room, and there are some great fabrics available that can really re-launch older pieces into this century. www.mrmod.co.nz

HOT PROPERTY WITH MARY TURNBULL

NEW YEAR’S SALES The New Year sparks different emotions in people, and while it has been a traditionally quieter sales period, it’s actually the perfect time to put your house on the market. Conventional wisdom used to be that potential home buyers were too preoccupied with attending parties, wrangling families and kicking back on vacation to bother with house hunting. However, in the mobile device age, the days when prospective buyers waited for the weekend papers to trawl through the latest properties are over. Motivated buyers are now cyber-inspecting the latest listings online and emailing real estate agents while they’re waiting outside the school gates, on vacation and doing the shopping – the reality is the house buying season is now year-round! So, armed with that knowledge and knowing that there is not only less stock on the market during the January/ February period, but also that there are plenty of buyers – fresh from holidays and filled with New Year’s resolutions and ready to make a move – the New Year period could be your best option in 2016. Less competition means greater opportunities to achieve a higher price, with an increased likelihood of bidding wars and multiple offers. Auctioning is a good way of securing top dollar for your property. There’s also an excellent chance of tapping into a market of serious buyers with an immediate need – perhaps they’ve relocated for a new job or have decided this is the year they up or downsize. As an added bonus, there’s ample time over the holidays to make any necessary repairs and to prime and spruce up your house to make it look its absolute best. What’s more, prospective buyers will be seeing your garden in its prime and your house at its sunniest. And if you’re really lucky, that nosey neighbour might even be away on holiday! www.maryturnbull.harcourts.co.nz 

READ, WATCH, LISTEN Reviews, profiles and celebrity insider goss. 1 READ Middle-Earth New Zealand, Ian Brodie. The coffee table book to rule all coffee table books, Kiwi photographer extraordinaire Ian Brodie’s Middle-Earth New Zealand celebrates the epic landscapes and locations made famous in the film trilogies created by Sir Peter Jackson. From the majestic peaks of the Southern Alps to the rolling hills and Volcanic Plateau of the North Island, the ethereal and rugged worlds of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit were stunningly re-created for the big screen blockbusters and captured in all their beauty and splendour. MiddleEarth New Zealand is a magnificent record of an historic era in film-making and a peerless collection of iconic Kiwi landscape and location photography by a master of his craft. My precious, indeed! RRP $60

2 WATCH A Most Violent Year Review by Nick Paris, Alice in Videoland. In this loaded slow burn of a thriller, the director of Margin Call turns the same forensic skills to an earlier era. It’s 1981, a peak year in the annals of New York violence, but Abel (Oscar Isaac), proud owner of an indie oil sales company, has the big time within his grasp. He’s paid a deposit on some game-changing Jersey waterfront storage and all he needs is 30 days to raise the rest. But someone, somewhere, is determined to squeeze him out – and the nasty surprises keep on coming. Abel’s a sharp operator, but he wants to play by the rules. His wife Anna (Jessica Chastain) sees things differently: this was not the way her father made his fortune ... a classic 70’s-style thriller that Travis Bickle would revel in.

 WHATEVER HAPPENED

3 LISTEN Bays, Fat Freddy’s Drop Review by Garry Knight, Pennylane Records. Bays is Fat Freddy’s Drop’s fourth studio album and after several listens, I think their best! The Wellington 7-piece have delivered another soulful, dub, reggae sound with a techno influence. Highlights include ‘Slings and Arrows’ which features a fast drum sound with big horns and a catchy melody. ‘Razor’, the first single, clocks in at 8 minutes and has the familiar reggae/ dub sound with a heavy base and catchy techno undertow. ‘Makkan’ is a great ballad with a real pacifica flavour. The thing I love about Bays is that the CD sounds great, the vinyl sounds better and I can’t wait to hear it live! FFD are playing at Waipara Hills in early January – a must on the calendar – but until then buy BAYS and enjoy.

CINEPHILES

Something for Cate Trotting out his signature Oscar bait, Todd Haynes’ (Far from Heaven) February release Carol ticks all the boxes, with Hollywood royalty Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine) and Rooney Mara (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) adding weight to the screen adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s early 50’s Sapphic romantic drama novel. It’s your untypical “bored shop girl (Mara) meets glamorous housewife trapped in a failing marriage (Blanchett)” tale of forbidden love that had Cannes buzzing with incessant Oscar speak. Sexy, sultry and gorgeously filmed (and let’s not forget those fab 50s wardrobes), Carol offers an intense, slow-building character study that will have you smiling through the (*spoiler alert*) tears – sounds like a recipe for Oscars all round then!

TO … Rosanna Arquette? Bona fide 80’s star Arquette got her start in TV and even had a song written about her (remember that Toto track?). Overshadowed by Madonna in Desperately Seeking Susan, her career never recovered and she fell into bit parts in cult flicks Pulp Fiction and Crash before, ironically, directing doco Searching for Debra Winger (about another 80s actress who fell off the radar), appearing in a slew of next-to-no-budget flicks and returning to TV.

THE WILDFOODS TRIPLE THREAT Serious Wildfoods gourmands won’t want to miss these taste sensations: Horse Semen Shots – giddy up! ‘Mountain Oysters’ (aka sheep testes) – aw, nuts (literally). Huhu Grubs – tastes like squirmy peanut butter.

Call of The Wild

Hokitika’s Wildfoods Festival is the Holy Grail for intrepid foodies the world over.

If you’ve not been to the Hokitika Wildfoods Festival yet, there’s a checkbox on your ‘Quintessentially Kiwi Experiences’ list that remains glaringly un-ticked. A favourite since its early days in 1990, the gourmet bush tucker festival offers a grand day under the Hoki sun that’s chocka with entertainment (in addition to watching strangers gargling horse semen!), celebrity cooking demos and, of course, an epic helping of both the delicious and seriously, poke-it-with-a-stickfirst, out-there grub. And yes, there are literally grubs (of the Huhu variety) on the menu. This year the gloves will come off in the TV cooking show smackdown

between MKR judge Ben Bayly and 2015 MasterChef winner Tim Read, who’ll both also be whipping up some gourmet wild fare in the demonstration kitchen. Those in the know will be rocking their fiercest Feral Fashion, trying to take out the annual comp where sartorial choices are often as weird and wild as the food on offer. But you came to eat, right? Good news: you can trawl over 50 stallholders from every corner in Aotearoa. While the daring will be reaching for classic Wildfoods staples like worm truffles, wasp larvae ice-cream and possum and magpie pies, you needn’t be a culinary daredevil to enjoy yourself;

DID YOU KNOW? Eleanor Catton’s 2013 Man Booker Prize winning novel The Luminaries is set in Hokitika during the gold rush of 1866. EATING AROUND TOWN Looking for a killer coffee? Swing by the hip cats at Stella Café Delicatessen & Cheesery & tap their bodacious caramel frappucino, or Soak up that over-indulgence of local tipples with Fat Pipi Pizza’s legendary whitebait pizza or the hangovercuring prowess of Porky’s Takeaways’ hot chips.

Christchurch Here & Now

West Coast delicacies such as whitebait, venison, wild game and seafood are on offer for those who are happy to keep things wild, but not that wild. There’s also a bodacious selection of local wines, beers and spirits to wash it all down with as you sack out in the sun to some sweet tunes. It all wraps up with an afterparty in Hokitika, the big little town with a colourful history that puts plenty more besides wild foods on the menu to entice you over – it’s the perfect base for some awesome long-weekend adventures such as exploring Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers, hitting spectacular bush walks, browsing the remarkable galleries of the many artists in the town working with greenstone/ pounamu, delving into the West Coast’s fascinating heritage, exploring spectacular rainforest and coastal scenery on foot or by air, and enjoying legendary West Coast hospitality with a locallybrewed Monteith’s – or two – with the welcoming locals.
