Dear Gina - vote No to bank arrogance THIS is a letter to Gina Cass-Gottlieb, chair of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, about big bank arrogance.

She has been stalling on allowing the Melbourne based ANZ Bank to take over Suncorp Bank.

She has concerns.

We want to add to them after another incident at the Woodford branch of the ANZ, the only bank branch in western Moreton Bay. Dear Gina, As well as competition, your federal agency has the remit to look after the interests of

consumers.

While the economic brainiacs are probably, through lots of complicated mathematics, able to show that ANZ taking over Suncorp only reduces competition in banking by a fraction of a percent, we believe you should act on behalf of consumers.

Let’s use the example of Woodford, hosting the only bank branch in the large area from Caboolture through the strawberry and pineapple fields to the tourist, timber and cattle region around the top of Somerset Dam. It’s an area of lots of small businesses, farms

and markets dealing in cash, and lots of new settlers with mortgages.

We have one bank branch open only part-time with staff struggling to deal with the most basic paperwork and good manners.

Let it also be noted that the few ATM terminals in the area often run out of cash due to the surges of tourists on weekends and appealing camping or festival seasons - and due to the only bank having limited hours.

Take a recent example.

A mother with a small business rushing to deposit cash on her way to pick up her child from

daycare finds the ANZ cash machine in Archer Street has swallowed her card and cash and won’t work.

It is an ANZ ATM attached to an ANZ bank branch, however, there is a sign on the door that the branch is closed for lunch.

Fortunately a person is delivering sandwiches to the bank staff visible behind the locked glass doors.

When a bank lady comes out for the sandwiches, the mother appeals for help.

The bank lady takes the sandwiches, looks askance at the distraught mother, then allows the automatic door to slam shut and lock.

It might be lunchtime, but surely any person with a scintilla of humanity would take a minute or two to help a distraught person.

Apparently that isn’t in the many pages of fine print for ANZ staff procedures.

This is just another example of poor service, and from banks ignoring or outsourcing reasonable customer service.

As they have gained more market power, their service levels have rapidly decreased - surely worth study and within the remit of the ACCC. We, the ordinary folk of Moreton Bay, do understand that we are far away from the absolutely politically correct, high salary, high personal service of the tops of tall towers in the big cities.

But surely we also deserve at least as reasonable level of service as inner city Australians (and you can add mobile/nbn communications to banking to a list).

We look forward to your decision in the interests in our picket of Australians.

Seniors enjoy Woodford gathering MORE than 100 people aged 65 and beyond flocked to the Woodford Memorial Hall on Wednesday last week for a Seniors Week celebration.

The attendees came from places ranging from Caboolture to Kilcoy to enjoy two hours of socialising, listening to music and consuming snack food.

Old friendships were

rekindled while new friendships were formed, as the local musical trio of Judy Wenham, Ricki Thavenot and Norm Smith played a cross section of music including folk and country songs from the 1950s and 1960s.

Federal Member for Longman, Terry Young, drew the winning raffle tickets

out of a box during his guest appearance.

The event was organised by the Woodford Lions Club, while the City of Moreton Bay (formerly Moreton Bay Regional Council) provided a grant.

Woodford Lions vicepresident Carol McLeod said it was a successful day, as

the event provided “a great opportunity for the community to come together”.

Carol said it was a fine day weather-wise while it was great to see Woodford Lions members, the Federal Member for Longman, Meals on Wheels volunteers and an array of seniors come together for the occasion.

Veterans’ and Families’ Wellbeing Hub opens THE veteran community on Brisbane’s north side has access to co-ordinated services and supports, following the opening of the Veterans’ and Families’ Hub in Caboolture on Wednesday of last week.

The Hub was part of the Australian Government’s $46.7 million commitment to deliver 10 Veterans’ and Families’ Hubs across the country.

Kabi Kabi representative Uncle Mick Douglas gave a Welcome to Country and speech at the opening of the Caboolture-based Hub, before further speeches were followed by ribbon-cutting and cake-cutting.

Guided tours of the Hub’s facilities also took place.

Minister for Veterans’ Affairs and Minister for Defence Personnel, Matt Keogh, officially opened the Hub which is operated by Lives Lived Well and the Vietnam Veterans Association of Australia (Queensland Branch).

“Between Lives Lived Well’s decades of experience in providing health and wellbeing support, and the Vietnam Veterans Association’s experience at the coal face, I look forward to seeing how your organisations, both leaders in your respective fields, work together to connect with, and support veterans here in Caboolture,” Mr Keogh said.

Mr Keogh said the Hub would be a one-stop shop for veterans and families in Caboolture, connecting them to support for employment, housing, transition, advocacy, mental health, wellbeing and counselling services.

“A key focus will be on assisting recently transitioned Defence personnel and their families to adjust to civilian life and become part of the community here,” he said.

“That transition is something that we know can be challenging not only for veterans but also for their families – and we also know that an awful lot of veterans choose south-east Queensland as their retirement location of choice, with more people transitioning to civilian life here, over anywhere else.”

Mr Keogh said one of every 25 residents in Caboolture alone was a current or former serving member of Australia’s Defence Force.

“Add in family members and you can appreciate how significant the veteran community in Caboolture is and the importance of this Hub,” he said.

Chair of Lives Lived Well Board, Damian Wright, shared the organisation’s excitement regarding the official opening of the Hub. “Veterans and their families in the region will now be able to access integrated and flexible support in a friendly, welcoming environment where their unique experiences are understood and supported, and their military service is respected,” Mr Wright said.

“The Hub is staffed by a team with either lived or learned veteran experience, extensively trained in wellbeing case management, who have begun fostering strong connections with ex-service organisations across northern Brisbane.

“Whether you need a coffee and a chat, access to wellbeing support, or you want to meet likeminded friends, you’re welcome at the Veterans’ and Families’ Wellbeing Hub.” State Secretary of the Vietnam Veterans Association of Australia (Queensland Branch), Darryl Shipp, said the Hub would be welcomed by the veteran community.

“It is so important that our Australian Defence Force personnel, veterans and their families have a dedicated place where they can go to connect with one another and to also access the assistance they need,” Mr Shipp said.

“We know having access to the right supports when you need them can make a real difference to health and wellbeing.”

Recognising the significance of social connection in supporting veterans, the Hub offers a dedicated social connections space where veterans can reconnect with old and new friends.

A fully equipped commercial kitchen enhances the community experience.

The Hub is open to all current and former serving Australian Defence Force members, including reservists and their families.

Woodford rollover TWO patients, including one with a laceration to the head, were transported stable to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital following a single vehicle rollover off Connection Road, Woodford.

The incident happened in the early hours of last Sunday morning.

Police request dash cam for arson POLICE are investigating a suspicious fire that occurred at a premises on Grant Road in Caboolture South last Saturday.

Officers from the Caboolture Criminal Investigation Branch are appealing to members of the public for dash cam footage that may have captured anything suspicious in the area between 8.30pm and 9.15pm.

If you were travelling along Grant Road between Caboolture River Road and Torrens Road around that time and you have dash cam footage, please contact police.

You may have, without your knowledge, captured something that may be of assistance to police with their investigation.

Array of talent on show in Woodford MORE than 60 people attended the opening of the Woodford Community Art Group Members Exhibition at the Woodford Museum and Art Gallery on the night of Thursday, October 5.

Well over 100 paintings and Visual Arts were entered in the competition, which was supported by funding from the City of Moreton Bay (formerly Moreton Bay Regional Council).

City of Moreton Bay Mayor Peter Flannery attended along with Moreton councillor Tony Latter, with the two of them presenting some awards.

Ellen Adriaansen won the overall champion award – having also won it previously – and Diane Sattler was named reserve champion.

Art judge Barry Back, who was judging at the annual Woodford art event for the first time, said the quality of art was very high while all of the artists should give themselves a pat on the back.

The exhibition is open from 10am to 2pm at the Woodford Museum and Art Gallery on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays (and on the third Sunday of the month), until November 29.

Customer service award win for ARB Caboolture THE Caboolture-based ARB store was recognised for its quality customer service, as the store took out the Queensland-based Customer Service Excellence Award.

ARB Caboolture retail sales manager Mark Vickery accepted the award at the annual ARB state conference at Hotel X in Fortitude Valley several weeks ago, attended by ARB stores and stockists from all over Queensland.

Customer feedback surveys which were sent to the ARB head office were a decisive factor in determining the award winner, as feedback has suggested ARB Caboolture has had many happy customers.

ARB Caboolture owner Roger Vickery said customers at all ARB stores often had high expectations in terms of quality products and services, and that

it was very satisfying for the Caboolture store to receive an award.

Roger said one would “feel a bit more confident” after gaining such recognition.

Having started ARB in Albion 40 years ago – after the company was founded eight years earlier – Roger retired as state manager of ARB Queensland in 2020 and then purchased the Caboolture store.

With his son Mark and daughter Lauren among the staff, Roger said Lauren led the way with happy customers with most customer satisfaction being thanks to her work ethic and work performance.

Roger said good customer service required more than just a pleasant and friendly manner, as the staff needed to deliver to a minimum level of customers’ expectations “and then exceed

it, so it becomes something memorable”.

Roger said the store had a lot of returning customers while there was a wide variety of ages and backgrounds among them.

Discussions begin for SEQ – Metro Vancouver Strategic Sister-Region Partnership TARGETED discussions have begun to formalise a Strategic Sister-Region Partnership between South East Queensland and North American sustainability powerhouse Metro Vancouver aimed at exchanging international best practices and strengthening social and economic ties.

The discussions between Council of Mayors South East Queensland and Metro Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada have been held during the 2023 Asia Pacific Cities and Mayors’ Forum in Brisbane this week.

Council of Mayors (SEQ) Chair, Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said a formalised partnership would strengthen the growing engagement between the regions which had been built off a statement of intent signed in February 2023.

“We both have growing regions with an array of social and economic challenges. Formalising a partnership can help us build stronger international ties and leverage new opportunities for our regions and our communities,” Cr Shrinner said.

“We share plenty in common and it’s been

interesting to learn how municipalities across Metro Vancouver are working collaboratively in areas like affordable housing and regional planning.

“We’ve already conducted a series of pacific leaders knowledge exchanges supporting dialogue, learning and policy development between the senior council officers and elected members in our regions.

“We’ve been exploring how we are addressing areas like population growth and waste

management, and we’ve taken these ideas to look at how we could do things differently in our own backyards.

“We know Vancouver used their 2010 Winter Olympic Games to advance public transport and they now support over 1 million daily commuters across their public transport network, or around 50% of daily trips.

“They’re also well advanced on their journey towards a circular economy boasting one of North America’s highest recycling rates of 65%.

“These are very relevant examples for our region and there is plenty to learn in terms of what solutions they have chosen, what has worked and what they would do differently.

“But we also know South East Queensland has plenty to offer Metro Vancouver, and it’s been great to have these discussions as we showcase our region to Mayors Harvie, McEwen and West.”

George V. Harvie, Chair of the Metro Vancouver Board of Directors said the similarities between the Metro Vancouver and Brisbane regions provided a strong platform for a strategic partnership.

“Metro Vancouver embraces collaboration and innovation in providing world-class, affordable services to our residents, and we recognise the value of exchanging knowledge with colleagues from abroad,” Chair Harvie said.

“As we move into targeted discussions about how this Strategic Sister-Region Partnership might develop into the future, from my time in Brisbane I can already see countless opportunities for our regions to learn, grow and thrive together.”

Senior years should be your best years I LOOK back with pride to the evening of July 1, 1976 when I chaired the launch function of National Seniors Australia, the first attempt in Australian history to create a national organisation to represent older voters in the corridors of power of all the Parliaments of Australia.

I then learned a lot about ageing as I served on its Board of Directors for 35 years.

Dame Enid Lyons, a parliamentarian in her own right as well as being the widow of the former Prime Minister of Australia, Joseph Lyons, was the guest of honour at the launch and she made a wonderful speech about the art of growing old.

She told us that it was easy.

Just let it happen, she said.

Sadly for too many oldies in Australia, this has not been a happy experience and there are many reasons for this.

Nevertheless, many goals have been kicked for seniors who have made our lives better.

Back at the time that I was born in 1931, the Great Depression was underway and this was swiftly followed by World War II. The pension at that was meagre and the going for oldies was tough. It is much better now, but if you reach retirement in poor health and with no home you are in real strife.

You will be living below the poverty line and having to choose between buying food or medicine.

Housing is actually worse now. Just after the war ended in 1945 governments built lots of small houses with low rentals that were okay for pensioners, but there are now far fewer of such houses as population has exceeded supply and costs of all housing of any type has skyrocketed.

In the case of my family in Linville in the Brisbane River

Valley, in my early years the timber mill for whom my dad worked actually provided us with a free house as part of our meagre pay packet and you could rent it cheaply if you retired there.

Medical costs are now a huge problem for oldies. The gap between bills and what Medicare and private health funds will refund is huge.

When I was in Linville, we went to the Kilcoy Hospital as outpatients when we were ill but too many seniors today want to see a private doctor not a hospital doctor.

Those private hospitals give out prescriptions that cost more than pensioners and most selffunded retirees can afford.

There are, of course, now many more retirement villages and nursing homes than ever before, most of whom charge far too much in entry charges and maintenance costs and during Covid they were found wanting in their quality of care.

Some nursing homes now struggle to survive, like the one I helped to establish at Toogoolawah many years ago.

They are too small to cover their operating costs.

Most of us now want to be

cared for in our own homes and this puts huge strains on carers but is the best way forward if pressure can be taken from the plight of carers. Too often, the carer dies first.

Longevity is actually wonderful. Most of us can expect to live to 90 but our money will often run out by then unless governments give incentives to people to stay working part-time until 75.

However, this continued work actually keeps people healthy and lengthens their lives. Life is full of challenges.

Soon, we will find that our largest age group will be 85 to 100, with some living to 110.

The second largest group will be aged 70 to 85 and the smallest age group will be one to five. How do we finance that? The best way is to force tax evaders to pay up their rightful dues.

Well, as Dame Enid said, relax and enjoy our old age while being active volunteers in society to make life interesting.

We can turn grey into gold if we live positively and not believe that the rest of the world owes us a living.

Rape victims put through the spin cycle SURELY we are not going to let this state of affairs continue in Queensland.

Story 1: A woman raped by two men goes to a public hospital emergency department in August 2023. She waits six hours before being told there were no rape kits available and no camera, told to take her own photos of her injuries, and come back next day.

Story 2: A woman presents to hospital in August after being raped and is told she could not be examined due to a lack of trained staff. She is transferred to another hospital by road, only to be ramped for a further eight hours.

Story 3: A large lizard was rushed into a Brisbane vet’s surgery after swallowing a tube of M&Ms. “The remarkable procedure was carried out under heavy sedation, ensuring a brief and comfortable experience for our scaly patient.”

Makes you feel good, doesn’t it. We know the lizard was released after it made a full and speedy recovery. And the two women? Who knows? Who really cares?

Chances are all this would have been covered up had it not been for media exposure and Opposition questions in parliament.

There have been claims one of

the women “was told to go home, … she’s not allowed to shower.”

Do you think that’s sick?

It gets worse. Even when it was exposed, Health Minister Shannon Fentiman and her department immediately adopted washing machine tactics. They switched to spin cycle.

“It is clear she did not receive the timely, compassionate, trauma-informed care that she was entitled to and expected,” the Minister told parliament.

“The hospital and health service has apologised to the young woman.”

What the Minister didn’t say was that the health service had only offered support and apologised that morning, by text, just minutes before she spoke in parliament — two months after the event.

And the superficial spin continued. Ms Fentiman said she understood the hospital had been trying to get in touch with the woman to apologise.

Fentiman wants us to believe the hospital couldn’t contact the woman, the victim of callous indifference, for two months, but miraculously found her the day the shocking incident hit the headlines.

It appears the only people paying the price for Queensland’s inadequate and, at

times, uncaring health system are members of the public and the health workers forced to unfairly bear the brunt of the criticism.

And while these people suffer, inept health administrators and their political masters just smugly sit there — spin cycle in overdrive.

Okay, we might not expect him to divulge explicit details of how a teacher was teaching a student more than the three Rs, but “aware of concerns”?

Really? Is that the best he could lamely come up with?

THEIR mouths move but they say nothing. It seems our schools, private and public, have been beaten over the head with the same say-nothing PC stick.

How’s this for avoiding any meaningful contribution to an horrendous event. “One of our students was harmed in an incident at a park outside our school yesterday.”

Harmed? How about knife wounds to his abdomen and legs and rushed to hospital in a serious but stable condition?

Then came the story that “one of Brisbane’s best private schools” had “dropped” a female teacher after allegations she and a year 12 boy were in a relationship.

What did the college head say? “The college is aware of concerns regarding a staff member and is investigating the matter.”

A NUMBER of readers can see the funny side of the latest episode of the “water provision Queensland style” miniseries.

Premier Palaszczuk has announced the construction of a new desalination plant to boost water supplies in the south-east.

She doesn’t know where or when it will be built, but possibly in Moreton region and maybe some time in the next two decades.

It might cost somewhere between $4 billion and $8 billion (make that $24 billion?) but she doesn’t know how it will be funded.

Oh, and she doesn’t know if it will prove to be an economically sound venture because the business case hasn’t been prepared yet, but don’t you worry about that.

Fourteen years ago Peter Beattie spent $12 billion waterproofing the region but that

was obviously an abject failure because we’re doing it all over again.

Oh, and another thing.

Recycled water is not an option, “not while my bum points to the ground and my ego points to the stratosphere.”

That prompted one reader to tell me the following: “The subject of recycled water in the media has often come under the heading of ‘Recycled sewage’, accompanied by a photo of treatment ponds at Luggage Point.

“In England the water you drink is said to have been through you five times. Nobody is dying from that.

“Some years ago I kayaked down the Brisbane River from Wivenhoe to Mount Crosby weir, the holding storage for the water purification plant.

“The river was little better than a large drain with cattle manure, dead birds and fish and other flotsam as well as run-off from boating, gravel extraction, towns and agriculture, and people don’t complain about drinking that purified water.

“We should be doing more recycling rather than spending, unnecessarily, mega dollars on desalinisation.”

The fact that Ministerial offices cost taxpayers $54 million last financial year hardly raises an eyebrow. Even the mainstream media seems to think it’s fine given the almost total lack of attention the eyewatering figure attracted.

You would wonder why it costs so much, given the belttightening taxpayers have been forced to do, but those in the Tower of Power managed to increase their spending by $7 million on the previous year.

I bet the families of people who died while waiting for an ambulance, or victims of crime waiting for some sort of compensation, or rape victims waiting for examination, care; and a touch of compassion, would have liked just a little of that self-allocated largesse.

Consultation open on new Draft 2,500HA added to protected areas Morayfield South Structure Plan WELL-PLANNED neighbourhoods that better support changing community needs are on the cards for Morayfield South as Council looks to reshape planning in the area.

Council has released a Draft Morayfield South Structure Plan that identifies important infrastructure and key features that are needed to support future growth in the area.

Moreton Bay Mayor Peter Flannery said responsible growth management and wellplanned places are critical to the success of a polycentric city.

“We’re committed to wellcoordinated, strategic and sustainable growth in the City of Moreton Bay,” he said.

“In 2021, we put a Temporary Local Planning Instrument (TLPI) in place to guide development in Morayfield South while we

worked on a long-term, holistic plan for the area.

“With the State Government’s support, we have updated the TLPI so we can continue to guide sustainable growth until the South East Queensland planning scheme amendment is completed.

“The updated TLPI includes more green mapping to improve the environmental corridor, confirmation of road types, reconsidering the location of some district recreational parks to better meet accessibility needs, and the removal of the future investigation precinct.”

Councillor Mark Booth (Division 2) said development interest is ongoing in Morayfield South but needs Council guidance for a wellplanned community.

“As Moreton Bay’s second largest growth area, new development in Morayfield

South - a key Emerging Community Area - requires considerable forethought and oversight,” he said.

“Over 9,000 new dwellings could be developed over the next 20-25 years, with the Morayfield population estimated to grow to approximately 26,000 people over that time.

“A remade TLPI enables Council to continue to regulate new development in this booming area.”

Cr Tony Latter (Division 12) said the update would keep development sustainable and community-driven in the area.

“The TLPI and future planning scheme amendment will help us meet housing needs and support economic growth, while better caring for the natural spaces around new developments, he said.

WEASEY’S PROPERTY REPORT PAIN and gain: Loss-making short-term resales rose in recent data, despite broader profitability in the housing market.

The share of homes sold within a two-year timeframe has risen by one percentage point to reach 8.5% over the past year. However, the portion of these rapid resales resulting in sellers incurring losses has seen a more significant increase.

Recent data from the CoreLogic Pain and Gain report reveals a rise in the percentage of short-term resales incurring losses. This figure has jumped from 2.7%

to 9.7% within a year.

Head of Research and report author Eliza Owen said a deeper dive into the performance of resales within a two-year period highlighted pain for recent home buyers.

“Two years is a significant time period because we are two years on from the height of pandemic-related lockdowns, low interest rates, and have just passed the peak of transitions from low fixed rates to high variable rates,” Ms Owen said.

When we look at the regional market specifically, resales within two years made up 11.1% of overall resales, compared to a decade average

of 7.2% per year.

The above-mentioned trend is atypical, as property owners obviously aim to sell for a profit usually and tend to hold onto their properties for a more extended period in order to do so, if need be. The occurrence of a resale resulting in a loss within such a short timeframe should be considered in the context of rapidly rising interest rates during that period, and significant cost of living pressures which has meant that owners are more likely to accept a loss and not hold out to seek capital gains.

THE community of Woodford and surrounds is invited to take part in a fundraiser in Woodford on Monday October 30, to raise money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

The event is the brainchild of 11-year-old Woodford resident Charlotte Collins, who has lived with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) for the past six years and is passionate about fundraising for T1D. “Hopefully in the future we could be looking at a world without Type 1 Diabetes,” she

Morgan Australian Consumer Confidence index has been in weaker than average territory since the pandemic began, but was up 1.9pts to 80.1 this week - the first time the index has been above 80 since February 2023 – almost eight months ago to the day.

Playitt for tourists LOCAL caravanners Jim and Maureen belong to a group of fellow travellers who gather periodically for a catch up and, having arranged the latest of these to be at the Woodford Showgrounds a couple of weeks ago, introduced their friends to Playitt.

It proved to be a popular choice and one of the biggest nights for a while.

Another group were in attendance this week, October 12, once again at the behest of Jim and Maureen. Eight former teachers, including Jim, were all fellow teacher’s college graduates of 1968, and all set out on their professional careers in 1971.

They too have been keeping up a tradition that sees them meet periodically and were welcome guests at Playitt and did they rock the night away!

Feedback suggests that they would like to come again and we say “bring it on”!

The band was short of a key board player this week, but that was no hindrance to their regular brilliance and their four vocal offerings headed off a tune filled night of great favourites Don led the walk-ups; Jan, Kiwi and Richard following up with some Dean Martin, Ray Charles and Linda Scott; and Jo, Sylvie and Barb delivering some Hermans Hermits, The Animals and Reba McEntire favourites.

Montana, Ken and J.B. lifted songs from the Dixie Chicks, Buddy Holly and Fastball; while Jenny, Ricki and Catherine used material from The Bee Gees, E.L.O. and Connie Francis, bringing the band back for a rousing finale of Old Time Rock ‘N’ Roll.

Big thanks to the folk who put their hands up to fill in for Albie, and to all the workers who make sure Playitt works each week and to The Sentinel for passing on the summary.

Moreton Bay Mayor Peter Flannery said since 2018 Lawnton has come to life with the biggest Australia Day party in Moreton Bay. “Hosted by the Lawnton Swim Club for eight years now, this summer staple provides our city with an affordable option for some serious family fun,” he said.

Councillor Yvonne Barlow (Div 7) said she was thrilled to see the free family event return in 2024 thanks to Council’s ongoing investment.

“Around 3,500 people enjoyed the Aussie Arvo festivities last year, and I’m excited to attend another fabulous event that’s even bigger and better next year,” she said.

“It’s so much fun for the whole family, with free entry plus free games, rides, live music, and even a dunk tank, which I’m nervous about getting into but it’s all in good fun!”

Councillor Mick Gillam (Div 8) said there was plenty of space for everyone at this great venue.

“Lawnton Aquatic Centre is a fantastic facility with a 50m lap swimming pool, 25m indoor swimming pool, toddler splash pool, play area and so much more. Each pool also has access via hoist chairs,” he said.

“There is something for everyone and a space for everybody to enjoy the day.

“You might even get the chance to dunk your favourite councillor or school principal.”

Councillor Cath Tonks (Div 9) said the event was an essential for the city’s summer calendar.

“All you need is your towel, hat, togs and some sunscreen and you are set for a fun-filled day of music and entertainment,” she said.

“Cornhole was a popular addition to the Aussie Arvo this year and it will be back again, so bring your throwing arm.

“Council is committed to bringing a vibrant events calendar to the people of Moreton Bay and this is another great example of our low-cost, high-fun offerings.”

Sydney and Canberra adventure WOODFORD P-10 State School secondary students and teachers set off for an exciting and action packed adventure to Sydney and Canberra at the end of last term.

There were a lot of first-time flyers, so there were a few nerves when lining up to board the plane but all went well and they arrived in Sydney for the first part of the tour.

Circular Quay, Sydney Opera House, Taronga Zoo, Ghost Tour and the Sydney Tower Eye were all on the list to explore. Travelling on to Canberra they visited Parliament House, where they met our local member, Mr

Terry Young. Students enjoyed the Canberra tours, visiting the Art Gallery, the Mint, the National Capital Exhibition, Sportex, Australian Institute of Sport, National Film & Sound Archive and Questacon.

A highlight was the muchanticipated tour of the War Memorial, where two students were given the honour of laying a wreath during the ceremony.

After a visit to the snow, it was time for our seasoned travellers to return home. A very big thank you to all our students who participated on the tour and embraced all the new experiences and activities.

After 18 months of planning, it went very quickly but was so worthwhile!

Century-makers inspire Caboolture cricket success BLAZING tons from Caboolture captain Cameron Trask and vice-captain Glen Batticciotto set up a huge first-innings win for the first graders against Caloundra in the two-day match at Roy Henzell Park.

Caboolture amassed a total of 347 for the loss of just two wickets before declaring the innings closed, in reply to the home side’s first innings total of 147.

Caloundra finished its second innings at 2/127 as Caboolture was unable to force an outright victory.

The visitors began last Saturday at 1/34 after day one of the contest took place a week beforehand, and they subsequently lost their second wicket with 85 runs on the board as opener Jayden Coffin departed for 40.

The run feast unfolded as Trask and Batticciotto put on an unbroken partnership of 262, with Trask scoring 107 not out while Batticciotto raced to an unbeaten 183.

Trask recorded 15 fours and faced 121 balls, while Batticciotto hammered 25 fours and seven sixes as he faced 143 balls.

The chance of an unlikely outright victory arose as Batticciotto held a catch off Steele Draper’s bowling without a run on the board in Caloundra’s second innings.

A 94-run partnership for the second wicket guided the hosts towards safety, with Isaac Cottrell scoring 43 before he was caught by Batticciotto off Coffin’s bowling.

Sam O’Brien made an undefeated 52 at first drop, and captain William Carlile smashed an unconquered 30 from just 13 balls before the match ended after the hosts faced 30 overs.

Caloundra lower order foils Caboolture second graders A solid first-innings total wasn’t enough for Caboolture in the second grade match at Caboolture Cricket Club, as the host team began its season with a first-innings defeat against Caloundra.

Having won the toss and batted on day one, Caboolture declared after 69 overs with its score at 8/202, following an innings of 86 from Blake Keating at number four.

Several of his teammates got their eye in but couldn’t make sizeable contributions, as the

second top score was 21 not out from Cooper Marshall at number eight.

Caloundra’s Mankul Singh finished with 3/30 after half of his 16 overs were maidens, and Samuel Lowther bowled four maidens while snaring 2/27 in 12 overs.

The run chase was interesting last Saturday as there were many pendulum swings, after Caloundra began the day at 0/12 from three overs.

Caloundra tumbled from 1/82 to 6/123, and then reached 6/168 before slipping to 8/175.

The hosts couldn’t land the knockout blows as partnerships of 42 and 18 took the visiting team’s total to 235.

None of Caloundra’s batters reached 50, with Trent Park and Saxon Maidment making 40s in the top half of the order before William Oakley made a stubborn 30 not out off 118 balls at number nine.

Keenan Sestanovich scored a crucial 17 off 69 balls at number 10 to help the visitors to the lead.

Run supply dries up for Caboolture in T20 CABOOLTURE was unable to record a victory in its two T20 cricket matches at Caboolture Sports Cricket Club last Sunday.

The host team was coming off a decisive first-innings win over Caloundra in a two-day fixture, but the shorter form of the game was a different matter as Caloundra and Glasshouse won comfortably.

Admittedly, Caboolture was well below full strength for the matches last Sunday while there were some fill-in players.

Caloundra racked up 175 runs for the loss of four wickets in the first match, thanks largely to opener Sam O’Brien’s 90

from 61 balls.

Harrison Clark-Burnham made 41 at number three, before O’Brien received support from the rest of the middle order.

Connor Corlet was Caboolture’s best bowler with 2/24.

The hosts were in trouble at 2/16 with both openers dismissed, and Caboolture remained behind the required run rate despite captain Cameron Trask’s undefeated 66 from 54 balls at number three.

Caloundra won by 55 runs after Caboolture also lost four wickets in its allotted 20 overs.

The hosts were more

depleted for their next contest, as Trask didn’t play while there were four fill-in players.

Caboolture batted first this time, and lost its first two wickets for one run before finishing on 6/78.

One of the fill-in players top-scored with 35 while Daniel Williamson made 29 not out.

Glasshouse opener Kushaal Ram raced to 56 off just 38 balls, and was dismissed with the final ball of the 10th over when only two more runs were needed for victory.

Two balls later, a single to Charlie Prudence sealed a ninewicket triumph for Glasshouse.

Brumbies tumble to outright loss THE Burpengary Brumbies suffered a 10-wicket loss to the Ashgrove Astronauts in the two-day cricket match at the Burpengary-based James Worthington Oval.

Several first-choice Burpengary players were unavailable on day one on Saturday October 7 as the hosts were dismissed for just 26 before the visitors reached 104 for the loss of seven wickets.

Ashgrove succumbed for 121 last Saturday after the

final three wickets fell from successive balls, with Troy Brown capturing two from the final two balls of an over before the first ball of the next over resulted in the last wicket.

Brown finished with impeccable figures of 4/12, but soon the hosts collapsed again as they were reduced to 5/25 in their second innings.

A 53-run partnership unfolded before Stephen Helliwell departed for 35, and then Brown’s exit for 22 left the

hosts 7/83.

An innings defeat was possible when the ninth wicket fell at 91, but then a final wicket stand of 28 took place before Jack Cheney was out for 15.

Damo McCrudden was left unbeaten on 18 at number 11.

Ashgrove needed only 25 runs to win, but it took 14 overs to secure the inevitable triumph as openers Joe Stallard and Mark Keating batted carefully.

Nambour’s total could have been much lower but the tailenders did a fine job, with the final four batters tallying 75 runs while Ian Ellem top-scored with 28 not out at number 11.

Having taken 1/20 from six overs as an opening bowler, Dedini went on to score 137 not out as an opening batter for Caboolture.

Christian Green (37), Suneel Dalawai (15) and Stuart (49) were adjudged lbw, before Runge made an undefeated 31 as Caboolture compiled 3/286 in 83 overs while Nambour used 10 bowlers.

Fourth graders slide to outright loss Caboolture’s fourth graders began their season with an innings defeat at the hands of Maroochydore on Caboolture soil.

The hosts were dismissed for 87 and 77, while the visitors made 9/191.

After winning the toss, Caboolture struggled while batting for 42.2 overs on day one despite a gallant 32 not out from Jeremy Donahoo at number seven.

Caboolture’s Dallas Keast then captured four wickets while Duane Hamment took three, but it wasn’t enough to prevent Maroochydore from gaining a strong lead after opener Cooper Vanderbyl led from the front with 58.

Maroochydore began day two at 8/140, before the lower order wagged as Vance Morriss scored 31 at number 10.

Blake Litchfield made 29 at the top of the order in Caboolture’s second innings, but resistance was minimal as the hosts lasted only 28.2 overs.

Fifth graders avoid outright defeat Caboolture’s fifth graders

came dangerously close to losing outright, as they hung on grimly to ensure Maroochydore had to settle for a first-innings win at Elizabeth Daniels Park.

After the hosts declared at 6/204 from 43 overs, they ripped through the visitors for just 49 in 16.5 overs before Caboolture struggled to 6/59 in 18 overs in its second innings.

Jon Viney was the cornerstone of Maroochydore’s total, as the opening batter made 106 not out while none of his teammates passed 20.

Mathew Blaxland took three wickets for Caboolture while three other Caboolture bowlers took one wicket each.

Trent Cooper was the only batter to reach double figures in Caboolture’s first innings as he made 12, while all five Maroochydore bowlers took at least one wicket each.

Forced to follow on, Caboolture was 3/6 after just 1.4 overs before three batters reached double figures.

Lachlan Crowe top-scored with 15 not out at number seven, while Kodey Edgar Farrell had 3/6 from four overs after earlier taking 2/6 from three overs.

Lions reps on song at AFL masters carnival A CONTINGENT of Moreton Bay Lions enjoyed being part of a title win for Queensland at the AFL Masters National Carnival, played at the Maroochydorebased Domino’s Park from October 1 to 7.

Moreton Bay was represented in the Over 35 men’s, Over 35 women’s, Over 40 men’s, Over 40 women’s and Over 55 men’s divisions, as a Queensland team reigned supreme in the first three of those divisions.

Queensland had two O35 men’s teams, with Lions player Tim Humphreys featuring in both.

A supporter and major sponsor of the Lions through Red Rooster, Humphreys had mixed results as the Queensland A team went through the carnival undefeated while the B team had one win and two losses.

In round one, Humphreys featured in the B team’s 7.7.49 to 1.2.8 win against Victoria Country/NSW while the A team prevailed 7.10.52 to 3.2.20 over Tasmania.

In round two, Humphreys played in the A team’s 15.13.103 to 0.1.1 thrashing of Victoria Country/NSW before

missing the B team’s 7.11.53 to 2.1.13 loss to WA/SA. On the Friday, Humphreys was in the B team’s 11.8.74 to 2.4.16 defeat against Tasmania, before he played in the final the following day as the A team beat WA/SA 8.10.58 to 2.2.14.

The A team never looked in danger after jumping to a 3.6.24 to 0 lead at quarter-time.

Queensland’s O35 women’s team had a strong Moreton Bay flavour as this team included Renee Gould, Kate Oppatt, Ricki Reeves, Jo Tuza and coach Shane Dawes.

This team had two resounding victories and a win by the tiniest margin, with Oppatt kicking a goal in each of the three games.

Queensland tallied eight majors in round one, and also amassed 21 behinds while keeping Victoria Metro scoreless.

Queensland had a sluggish start to its next match, and trailed 3.1.19 to 0 at quartertime.

After trailing by seven points at three-quarter time, Queensland kicked 2.2.14 to 1.0.6 in the final term to steal a nail-biting 4.4.28 to 4.3.27 win against Western Australia.

In its final match in the O35

women’s division, Queensland thumped South Australia 10.12.72 to 0.

As was the case with the O35 men’s division, Queensland had an A team and a B team in the O40 men’s division. In the older of these divisions, Queensland’s A team won all three of its matches while Moreton Bay’s Jeremy Reeves played in the B team which was unable to record a victory.

Queensland’s B team began with an 11.3.69 to 2.3.15 loss to Victoria, followed by a 12.7.79 to 3.1.19 loss to Tasmania and a 12.5.77 to 1.0.6 defeat against Western Australia.

Against Tasmania, Jeremy Reeves kicked a major in the third term as Queensland outscored its opponent 3.0.18 to 2.1.13 in this period.

The Over 40 women’s age group had two divisions, with Lions reserve graders Lyn Heggan and Amba Mellish taking part in the Queensland Division 1 team.

This Queensland team also had three losses, despite being competitive in two of its three outings.
