Impact Report 2024 - Somerset Cricket Foundation

Page 1

WELCOME

Reflecting on 2024, there have been so many memorable moments and achievements to fondly look back on with pride and enthusiasm across our delivery programmes. We stand strong on our mission to improve peoples lives through cricket, and we have so many great examples of how the Foundation has done this throughout the year across all our communities. Whether children, young people or adults the breadth and range of programmes we help facilitate and deliver is ever growing and developing. We strive to build sustainable and impactful opportunities, holding our focus very much on using cricket as vehicle for social change.

A phrase that I have used throughout 2024 is “Good for Cricket and Cricket for Good”, which encapsulates what the Foundation is all about. We are first and foremost here to support cricket, and ensure the recreational game continues to thrive, grow and develop across our Club and School network. Working closely with our national partners the ECB, Chance to Shine and Lords Taveners we deliver some outstanding

network. We are regarded as a leading organisation from the ECB in both our Schools and Disability cricket provision, and this is testament to our committed and vastly experienced delivery team. We must continue to unlock more opportunities for clubs to grow their playing offers, putting clubs at the heart of their communities, and making cricket the most inclusive sport in the Country.

Reflecting closely on 2024, our ‘Cricket for Good’ opportunities continue to surpass expectations, and is a real highlight for me, as it clearly demonstrates how cricket can be used to really make significant differences to people’s lives. Bringing people together, forming friendships, providing an opportunity to build memories is what sport and cricket is all about. We’ve worked closely with local delivery partners to continue our work with older people, people living with disabilities and our diverse communities across Somerset. Walking Cricket, Sporting Memories, Together in Sport, Walkers & Talkers, Talk Club and our Adult Disability delivery are all programmes that contribute to making significant impact to peoples daily lives. The challenge for us moving forward is how to successfully integrate our cricket for good programmes within our community club settings, as this will make our clubs more inclusive.

The Foundation has now operated as a Charity since 2021, and we’ve been extremely fortunate and well placed to receive great support from our local commercial and charity partners that have recognised the impact our programmes have on the communities across Somerset. We’re both grateful and thankful for this continued support and hope to broaden the awareness of the charity moving forward.

Looking forward, 2025 brings some incredible opportunities for the game, none-more than the expansion of Tier 1 Women’s Cricket. With Somerset CCC having a professional women’s team, we must take the opportunity to engage and inspire the Women and Girls network across Somerset to grow the game. The relationship between SCCC and the Foundation remains to be one of the strongest in the Country, and we continue to collaboratively develop, plan and deliver unique opportunities for our communities.

A phrase that I have used throughout 2024 is ‘Good for Cricket and Cricket for Good’, which encapsulates what the Foundation is all about.

community festivals

“We entered teams into both the Under 9 and Under 11 age groups.  A great opportunity for our players to play in a different environment against other local teams.  We were only too happy to host one of the festivals.  A lovely occasion where parents, grandparents, brothers & sisters all came together to watch

“It has been such a fantastic opportunity for our children to play at the festivals at both other clubs and the county ground. These festivals were the highlight of the cricket season for the children at our club. Thank you to the Somerset Cricket Foundation team.”

WEST COKER & HARDINGTON CC

“We were delighted to host one of the Countdown Cricket Festivals during 2024. Whenever we can provide mass participation and lifelong play, for not only our children but other children who are learning to love our game, it was something we jumped at. As a club, it provided us with some recognition of being a good partner with the F oundation, and in hosting cricket activities beyond what our club provides us, it left us with a strong sense of promoting that lifelong love of cricket. This provided the first taste for our national programme children to experience game play and, for those that may not have been game ready, a safe and inclusive introduction, with the focus on the game. We loved the enthusiasm of the coaches who came with their teams and their willingness to cobble together teams when children didn’t arrive. We most definitely want to do it again”

I just want to go on record and say that Matt Counsell at SCF has been a tremendous support for us not just during the ClubMark process but over many years. Over the last couple of years and this year in particular we and I have had tremendous support from Somerset Cricket Foundation.

The team is great and specifically a call out for the work that the team are doing to support girls and women’s cricket has been exceptional and to me, having a clear positive impact.

It was a genuine privilege to be able to meet the volunteers who give so much to making cricket happen day in and day out and to hear the stories of the incredible impact they are having on their clubs and communities. The entire evening felt so special so a huge congratulations to all of the team who make it such a slick and celebratory event. It was clear how much it meant to everyone attending and it was fantastic to see the support from the club too. And I haven’t even mentioned the cheese board yet...!

It was great to play with more experienced players and the standard encouraged me to push myself. It was unique to have team mates I’d usually play against in league cricket tooyou don’t get that experience in any other competition.

The Higos 100 Women’s festival held at North Perrott this year was a sign of the incredible progress the club has made in making Women and Girl’s cricket a priority. It was the first Women’s event that the whole of the club had participated in with Umpires, Scorers, Ground Crew, BBQ and Bar Staff all being volunteers from every part of the club. This really helped with the Women’s team visibility within the club environment and the wider community. Interest in the Women’s side was definitely increased and the team felt like a stronger presence at the club. The players really enjoyed the day and loved playing with a bit more freedom with no real pressure on the results. Meeting new teams and reconnecting with old ones was a great opportunity to chat and make some plans for future friendlies.

It was phenomenal to be in a group of similar aged, similarly enthusiastic women, all desperate to learn a little more about this glorious sport.  When you have come to a new sport late in life, any little nuggets of information (how to hold the bat correctly, how to place your feet, where to put your fingers on the ball, where to direct your run up) are like gold dust. The sessions have been brilliant. They have given me confidence and made a real difference to my cricket. Having dedicated coaches, even for just two hours a month, investing in our skills has been really exciting. The group of women is a really lovely cohort, encouraging and supportive and the over 50 men that have joined us occasionally to assist with coaching have been nothing but inspiring.

This dynamo development session helped introduce girls to cricket in a fun and encouraging environment, breaking down barriers and showing that cricket is for everyone. Cricket is more than just a sport—it’s an opportunity to build confidence, teamwork, and resilience, and to create a lifelong love of physical activity. Events like these play a crucial role in fostering inclusivity, helping young girls feel confident in their abilities, and encouraging more girls to engage in sports.

OF PARTICIPANTS HAVE A LONG TERM HEALTH CONDITION

Walking Cricket helps to provide regular physical activity, which helps to improve both physical and mental health as well as reverse some effects of chronic disease to keep older people mobile and independent. The Active Lives Survey of 2021 –2022 shows that 42.1% of adults with a long term health condition are inactive, coupled with 43.9% of over 75’s being inactive. Walking Cricket is an opportunity to help reverse these figures.

Opened up a whole new group of friends. Has given me unexpected confidence in ball, bat, and bowling skills. I love the easy going atmosphere, the inclusion of all abilities, the encouragement when things go good or bad and the laughing and general upbeat happiness.

The sessions are wonderful for offering physical and mental stimulation at early stages in a non-judgemental and inclusive environment, without the stigma of a ‘day centre’ scenario. The wide range of activities keeps interest levels and enthusiasm high and the bigger physical environment allows for wider freedom of movement. We feel that the prestige of the venue attracts a wide demographic of attendees and the familiarity, friendliness and open-minded nature of the group allows for the development of strong ongoing relationships. WITH REMINISCENCE LEARNING

As a carer, I always look forward very much to coming to Together in Sport. It give me the chance to relax and chat with other carers about our lives and our problems. We share tips and suggestions, which can be very helpful. It is warm and comfortable place where we feel at ease. My husband joins in the activities and the walks around the ground. The communal quizzes are fun and I am happy to join in the exercise and activities.

BARROW GUERNEY CC CLUB CASE STUDY

We started with the great work already being done by Somerset Cricket Foundation in trying to get clubs to adopt an approach to mental well-being which suits them, and encourages members (playing and non-playing) to share their thoughts, feelings and ideas. This initiative is in itself in its infancy, but is progressing nicely as more clubs across the region not only recognise its importance, but also develop their own programmes of activity to get people talking.

A three tiered system for cricket clubs to engage with participants that have a disability. From running inclusive sessions, linking with local existing community groups or just promoting opportunities that exist for young people and adults to engage with disability cricket.

This has formed the foundations for us at Barrow Gurney Cricket Club, with the Foundation sharing great content and leadership materials and tools for us to take back to our respective clubs. Although it has been a slow burner, we have started to make progress with the introduction of a ‘Talk Club’.

The ‘Talk Club’ idea stems from the superb local men’s mental health charity, Talk Club, who set out a few years ago to break the stigma around men’s mental health. The concept of the Talk Club is to have a ‘Captain’ at the club who leads the conversation around mental health - whether this is getting people to sit down and share ideas, or to actually do it whilst you’re training. Not only do we now have lots of mental health wellbeing paraphernalia and information up at the club for home players and supporters to read and take away, but it is also something that has caught the attention of visiting players and supporters alike which is great!

We have also done a couple of fundraising events for the charity this year, including a kwik cricket match at the start of the season in which we raised over £300, as well as a sponsored walk to finish the season in which we walked from our club via several other local cricket clubs all the way to Clevedon Cricket Club, raising circa. £800 in doing so.

This has been a really positive change for the club over the last couple of years, and long may it continue through our relationships between both the SCF, as well as Talk Club.

Through the Dynamos and All Stars Bursary programme, the young people who attended felt they developed in the following areas:

72% improved confidence 40% developed better skills to make new friendships 40%

It has given me a real sense of belonging. I look forward to meeting up each week. It is a highlight of my week and certainly aided my recovery and sense of well being.

south west super 1 festival

Somerset County CC hosted the first Southwest Super 1s festival where Super 1s participants from clubs across the Southwest were given the opportunity to play on the outfield. In addition, participants were given a media masterclass and got to use their new found skills by interviewing Jack Leach as well each other and having it live streamed.

We encouraged our daughter to join Super 1s, as she’s sociable but hesitant about sports. Given her physical and intellectual challenges, mainstream activities are often out of reach, so Super 1s provided an excellent way to get her active.

NATIONAL AWARD

Super 1s has had a huge positive impact. The coaches have been supportive, helping her improve her fitness, coordination, and self-esteem. She’s now more active, has gained confidence, and sees herself as sporty. Since joining, she completed the Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards (SEND version) and even started playing rugby with Bath Rugby’s inclusive team, something we never thought possible before.

Her social skills, listening, and ability to follow instructions have all improved. She struggles with anxiety, but her excitement about a Super 1s girls’ residential in summer 2024 helped her overcome it. She returned full of confidence and now wants to pursue sports coaching or outdoor education.

Her confidence continues to grow, and she’s been invited to join the Super 1s Leadership Academy, which she’s thrilled about. The programme has encouraged her to step outside her comfort zone, broadening her perspective and reducing her anxiety. It also gave our family some muchneeded respite.

We are incredibly grateful to the Super 1s programme and Lord’s Taverners for their support, which has transformed our daughter into a confident, sporty young woman who looks forward to every session.

Brilliant! I loved how Paul explained how drills are adaptable and can be used from a 10 year old to an international cricketer.

FIELDING WITH PAUL TWEDDLE

The whole session was really good and the exercises & drills were well demonstrated and explained. The level of detail that Max went into was really insightful.

I sometimes doubt what I’m doing and worry I’m going to get it wrong! The reassurance from Sean made me see that I’m actually doing okay, and to have a bit more confidence in my knowledge and delivery of a session.

tutors and other attendees were a fantastic bunch.

I thought the course was excellent. Spaced out over a month with a week in between sessions allowed for consolidation of learning throughout the course.

SAFEGUARDING CHILDREN AND ADULTS IS EVERYONE'S RESPONSIBILITY.

2024 has seen a focus on leading & developing a safeguarding culture to deliver cricket in a safe and inclusive way. This aim has been supported by working collaboratively with our staff, cricket network and our partners to ensure best practice and create safer environments. Actively listening to and engaging with participants, partners and stakeholders helps us to understand what is needed to make everyone feel safe and welcome. We continue to see a rise in the standards and reach of the safeguarding provision at both a local level in our clubs and the numerous inclusive groups that form part of our growing cricket network.

SCF continue to operate at a high level and were rightly awarded ‘Leading Organisation’ status at previous County Partnership Agreement meetings. They continue to push themselves in this area. Given the content and discussions from the meeting, I would have no hesitation in recommending SCF maintain this status. I am grateful for the continued levels of engagement with all at SCF. Well done!
