CEO’s Update Summer tends to be a quiet time for both parliament and industry, but this year appears to be an exception as there have been a number of developments of genuine interest.

Following EDF Energy’s final investment decision to proceed to build Hinkley Point C, I am delighted of the announcement of enhanced contracts by an additional £240million for South West supplier alliances, bringing the combined contract values to date for local and regional businesses to over £465million. This, along with upgraded appraisals on the anticipated spend within the local economy, is a real boost for investment and growth across the region. The Somerset Chamber’s Hinkley Supply Chain Team continues to work exceptionally hard behind the scenes with businesses and local supplier groups, helping them get into the best position to bid for work at Hinkley Point C, so news like this is always very rewarding. The opportunity to be part of the project is very much there for the taking, so I would recommend any businesses not already registered on the supply chain contact the Chamber and find out how they might be able to get involved.

Many businesses across Somerset await with interest the government’s decision on whether to proceed with the building of HPC, following a government review. We trust that any decision taken by Prime Minister Theresa May and the Rt. Hon Greg Clark MP will consider the letters and representations that have been submitted to them, including my own open letter from early August, which can be found in the Newsroom on the Somerset Chamber website.

In other news, students and parents alike turn their thoughts to how well they have done in their GCSE and A-level exams. For many it can be an anxious wait to see whether they achieved the grades they need to continue their education at their chosen further or higher educational establishments.

Nevertheless, with Somerset being home to over 21,000 businesses, attending university is not the only route for a successful career. Many business and industry leaders have not necessarily gone down the university route, but have flourished by starting their careers as an apprentice. The Chamber are passionate about retaining and attracting new talent to Somerset to help build a more productive and vibrant local economy. Despite the challenges all businesses face, we should remind ourselves that

Somerset is a great place to live and work, with a vast array of options available from intermediate, advanced, higher and degree level apprenticeships in countless sectors and disciplines.

I would encourage students to consider carefully their options, and not be too disheartened should university no longer be an option.

In addition, we are delighted to be involved in Erasmus’ Life Online, a three-year pan-European project designed to teach soft skills and competencies to students who are looking to work overseas, with the Chamber providing a business perspective.

Finally, I take this opportunity to remind both our members and other businesses alike that now is a time when your voice really can make a difference.

The British Chambers of Commerce are currently undertaking the Quarterly Economic Survey (QES) for the third quarter of 2016, which asks businesses for feedback on their experiences of trading during this quarter in order to gain a picture of the local economy.

Findings from the QES help influence government, independent local economists and the Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee, which uses the results as an important benchmark when setting interest rates. From a Somerset perspective, the responses also provide a solid platform on which to convey key messages about the local economy’s needs.

Hinkley and the Somerset Workforce Enhanced Hinkley opportunities are good news for the county but highlight the need to keep staff happy and engaged

However, with low unemployment rates across the county, it is inevitable that some of our local businesses will lose staff to the project, should it get the green light from the government.

EDF Energy’s recent announcement of enhanced contract values worth an additional £240million for South West supplier alliances has been welcomed as a boost for investment and growth across the region.

Bringing the combined contract values to date for local businesses to over £465million, it is likely to generate a significant amount of employment for the region and opportunities for the local workforce.

Writing in the Western Daily Press, Helen Lacey, Founder and Managing Director of Red Berry Recruitment, as well as being a Somerset Chamber Board Director, commented, “Although Hinkley will attract certain skills and talents, and create some great opportunities, smaller employers in the region who also need these skillsets are worried about where will they get these people, what salaries will they be on and how much they will have to pay existing staff to keep them.”

The Hinkley Supply Chain Team, managed by the Somerset Chamber of Commerce, has now been working with these and other local supplier groups for a number of years, helping them get into the best position to bid for work at Hinkley Point C. Commenting on the revised figures released on 18th August, Chief Executive Dale Edwards said, “This is real evidence of the way in which EDF Energy is using Hinkley Point C to transform the way in which large infrastructure projects engage and develop local and regional supply chains. It also highlights to other businesses across the South West that the opportunity to be part of this once-in-a-generation project is real, vast and already bringing substantial investment and growth to our whole region.

While it is hard to compete with the higher salaries that the larger companies can offer to entice employees in their direction, there are a number of other ways in which Somerset companies not involved in the project can ensure they have a happy and engaged workforce.

Training and skills development, flexible working and an attractive working environment, for instance, all help to create a feeling of positivity and wellbeing in the workforce, meaning staff are less likely to be looking for alternative employment.

It is vital that businesses put plans in place now to cope with any changes.

“Another great engagement tool is to give increased autonomy to employees. Nobody likes to be micro-managed, and allowing employees to find their own ways of doing things can help them feel trusted, valued and significant.”

Debbie Morris, Founder and Director of Concilium-HR, said, “A really important tip I’d say is not to believe that financial benefits are everything. It’s true that salary is often the key attraction to a new job but often the reason for leaving relates to being unhappy with working relationships, ineffective line management or a poor work environment, so focusing on getting these right is key. Having clear job roles, good team working, some laughter, encouraging ideas, meaningful two-way feedback and remembering to say thank you all helps! Happy teams create happy customers which leads to more business so it is a win-win situation.

Succession planning within the workforce is another important area that businesses should consider, ensuring that the programmes and services that are crucial to a business’s operation are sustained beyond the tenure of the individual currently responsible for them. Acknowledging that staff will not be with an organisation indefinitely and creating a plan for addressing the changes that will occur when they leave enables a business to cope more readily with change when it happens, ensuring in turn that the firm remains fully operational and effective.

While we await the result of the government’s review into the Hinkley Point C project, it is a good time for businesses to review their processes and employee engagement levels. Whether or not your business is involved in Hinkley Point C, the project will make a big impact on the whole area if it goes ahead, bringing widespread opportunities, upskilling the local workforce, and raising the bar overall for the county.

Annual General Meeting 2016 A few words from Graham Knight, Chair of the Somerset Chamber of Commerce “Our AGM is fast approaching and the formal notice is below; this year we have Board vacancies to fill during our short business session. In addition, we are delighted that our guest speaker will be Matthew Maynard, Director of Cricket at the Somerset County Cricket Club.

“I say ‘fast approaching’, which is particularly pertinent for me personally as this year I must stand down after the maximum permitted three years as Chairman. It has been an honour and a privilege to head the Chamber team and work during this time and I do genuinely hope I may see many members there on the evening for my last event. Please do come along and join us at our normal venue at the Holiday Inn in Taunton. I promise to keep the AGM business to a minimum and allow plenty of time for networking and catching up!”

Notice of Annual General Meeting The Board of Directors of the Somerset Chamber of Commerce gives formal notice of the 2016 Annual General Meeting, to be held at the Holiday Inn, Taunton on Wednesday 23rd November, commencing at 19.00.

The short AGM agenda will include:   

An update on Chamber activity over the past 12 months, plus presentation of the new Business Plan.

Presentation and approval of the annual accounts to 31st March 2016.

Election or re-election of Member Directors to serve up to three years.

A two-course hot buffet meal will be provided following the formal AGM business.

Nominations for Directors Board members serve a three year term and then are able to stand for re-election for a further three years.

Member Directors Graham Knight and Martin Lock, who have served their initial three years and a subsequent further three years of service, must now stand down from the Board. Any member may seek election to the Board in their stead. Other Member Directors are at varying stages of this three year cycle and do not need re-election, although Greg Saunders (Vice Chair) will need to seek re-election this year having served for an initial three years.

In addition, two new Board Members from Affiliate Chambers will be invited to join the Board. Nominations for these positions are handled directly by the Board and the Affiliate Chambers concerned.

The Board is therefore looking for nominations from representatives of member companies to serve as a Director for an initial three year term. Should there be more nominations than spaces available, a ballot will be held of those attending members at the AGM. British Chambers of Commerce QES fieldwork currently underway

The fieldwork for the Quarterly Economic Survey (QES) began on 22nd August and will run until 12th September.

The QES is the largest and longest-running business survey in the UK and is a powerful tool for representing the voice of business to Government.

Membership Case Study: Manuflex Limited Ray Stewart, Managing Director of Manuflex, explains the value he has found from the different services and support offered by the Somerset Chamber

Manuflex Limited is a specialist engineering company offering high quality plate and sheet metal fabrications including finishing.

The company was founded in 1988 and operates from Highbridge, with great connections due to its close proximity to the M5.

Manuflex works across a number of fields, including plant, electrical, marine and the food industry, making equipment from chassis to marine exhaust systems ranging from 50mm diameter up to 600mm diameter. It works across a range of materials including mild steel, stainless steel, aluminium and other non-ferrous metals.

Manuflex first became interested in the Somerset Chamber of Commerce after moving to Highbridge.

Ray Stewart, Managing Director of Manuflex, said, “When Manuflex moved to new premises Highbridge in 1996 we sought out the local county Chamber. We knew that the Chamber would be able to provide the support and guidance we needed as a new business to the area. We had previously been a member of the Bristol Chamber of Commerce, but we believed the Somerset Chamber better represented our views, and was a professional yet local organisation rather than a city based group.

“As a business we can be directly involved with other local companies and have access to good advice, with our views being represented at both county council and national government level. There is a kudos to being involved in our local Chamber that tells other businesses that we value our location and support it wherever we can. Members’ News Secret World appoints new CEO Secret World Wildlife Rescue has appointed animal welfare specialist David Foulds to the position of Chief Executive as the charity heads towards its Silver Jubilee year in 2017.

David takes on the role at Secret World in East Huntspill, near Highbridge, leading a team that rescues and cares for more than 5,000 injured and orphaned animals and birds every year from Bristol, Bath, Somerset and parts of Devon and Dorset.

Originally from Derby, David has been working for the past 12 years with such charities as Guide Dogs for the Blind, Hearing Dogs for Deaf People, and a regional dog rescue charity.

He brings to Secret World a passion for and an understanding of animal charities, and a solid record of financial performance in an increasingly difficult sector.

University Centre Weston commended in higher education review Students and staff at University Centre Weston (UCW) are celebrating after the institution’s Higher Education provision was praised by the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA).

UCW, the new name for Weston College’s Higher Education provision, received a “commended outcome” from the QAA ― the top judgement possible ― for the quality of student learning opportunities.

UCW has been awarded the QAA Quality Mark – the signifier to UK and international students of universities and colleges achieving the national requirements for standards and quality.

Kellaway director overcomes serious crash to complete Ironman for children’s charity Kellaway Building Supplies’ Operations & Commercial Director Sean Morgan completed his first Ironman, swimming 2.4 miles, cycling 112 miles and running a 26.2 mile marathon to help raise money for the company’s chosen charity, Children’s Hospice South West. The achievement is made all the more impressive as his training was interrupted by a road accident in April.

“I had been training hard when I was hit off my bike by a motorist while out training,” explains Sean. He suffered serious facial and muscular injuries and required plenty of stitches. With hospital care, huge support from his family and a brief break from work, Sean was able to return to training only a few weeks after the incident, even more determined to complete his goal. He finished the gruelling event in an impressive 13 hours and 14 minutes and is already planning his next event to support the charity.

To date, Sean has raised over £4,400 for his efforts.

Brewin Dolphin has a blooming good time at Taunton Flower Show Wealth Management company Brewin Dolphin was the main sponsor for this year’s annual Taunton Flower Show; a two-day event held in Vivary Park, Taunton. On the first weekend of August, more than 400 guests were welcomed to the Brewin Dolphin hospitality marquee to enjoy lunch and light refreshments. In addition, the company hosted a drinks reception on the first evening for over 50 business professionals and associates.

Guests enjoyed a talk from renowned garden designer Darren Hawkes, who designed the stunning Brewin Dolphin garden at RHS Chelsea in 2015, for which he was awarded a distinguished gold medal.

Claims Consortium scoops top insurance industry award A new software platform created

by Taunton-based Claims Consortium Group has been recognised by the UK insurance industry in its flagship awards.

Somerset Chamber’s apprentice ‘tees’ off’ with her round-up of the Charity Golf Day

Brooke’s first big event was the Somerset Chamber’s Charity Golf Day, and the Chamber asked Brooke to provide her account of the day with her first ever editorial, set out below.

The Somerset Chamber’s 10th Annual Golf Day took place at Oake Manor Golf Club on 18th September.

Playing in teams of four, 16 teams competed in the annual fundraising event who were all met with sunshine from midday onwards.

Stand Against Violence bring violence workshops into schools across the country to encourage young people to look at their own place in the community and the consequences of their actions. The charity was set up in 2005 following the tragic murder of 17 year-old Lloyd Fouracre; SAV aims to prevent future tragedies such as this and save families the grief of losing loved ones to violence.

Claims Consortium’s first team were the overall winners on the day, closely followed by runners up, Albert Goodman with only one point in it. The winners each received a bottle of bubbly and golf goodies.

Best Individual Player went to Connie Beasley, Operators Director at Claims Consortium who said, “I felt great on the course, it all went really well. We used six mulligans but they were all for charity so we didn’t mind.” A lot of teams were making the most of the balloon mulligans on sale.

Following the golf, the players stayed for a carvery dinner and prize-giving along with a raffle and auction to help raise further funds for the Chamber’s chosen charity, Stand Against Violence. The total amount raised on the day was £3,196.36.

Town Chamber News Bridgwater Chamber of Commerce The Bridgwater Chamber of Commerce is one of the newest Chambers within the South West, being formed only six years ago. It was originally set up after a few local business people expressed their concern that there needed to be a local business voice.

Claire Carter of BBC Somerset, welcomed 200 attendees and was a showpiece for the Bridgwater Chamber.

Now in its sixth year, it has seen membership grow year-on-year and is supplying a high level of information, networking and support for local Bridgwater businesses.

2016 is another year of expectation in relation to the Hinkley Point C project and the will it/won’t it happen scenario. This project, on the doorstep of Bridgwater, will not only provide direct work opportunities but it will also invariably bring growth to the area in many other business sectors, all benefiting from what is expected to be a booming regional economy.

In March the town saw the start of the first large hotel project in Eastover, and this has been confirmed as the site for a new Marco Pierre White restaurant within the hotel. The Chamber has supported this venture and liaises regularly with the business team at Sedgemoor District Council.

March also saw the fourth annual Sedgemoor Business Excellence Awards, held at the new McMillan Theatre, part of Bridgwater College. This year’s event, hosted by

Raising the Bar #3 Bidding and Tendering workshop: 'Honing Your Bid and Perfecting the Pitch’ Successful bidding and tendering was the topic of the latest in the Somerset Chamber’s ‘Raising the Bar’ workshops, which are aimed exclusively at Chamber members registered on the Hinkley supply chain portal.

The presenters highlighted some of the traps that businesses can fall into when bidding for work, and provided recommendations on how to convince the client that your business will do the best job of meeting their needs.

Held on 20th July at the Canalside in Bridgwater, the workshop was presented by The Bid Coach Ltd and attracted around 35 delegates. It covered the full bidding and tendering process, from researching the right opportunities and prequalification through to deciding whether to bid, demonstrating value in your tender and learning from the experience, regardless of the outcome.

Hugh Graham from The Bid Coach stressed the importance of only going for business that fits with your business strategy, that is core to what you do, or that is going in the direction you want to take your business.

He highlighted some of the many advantages that tendering for business can bring, including regular income, stability for the business and its employees, and an ability to plan workloads more effectively.

His colleague Ian Smith highlighted the most important things that the buyer needs to know about your business – namely that you can demonstrate quality of service; you can deliver reliably; your price is competitive; you can demonstrate flexibility; you can be innovative; and that you can have a good working relationship with your clients.

On the subject of price, he stressed that although price is significant, the cheapest bid rarely wins and actually value for money is generally more important.

He added that from a public sector point of view, the two ‘buzzwords’ to bear in mind are ‘MEAT’ (Most Economically Advantageous Tender) and ‘VfM’ (Value for Money).

Before deciding to bid, delegates were advised to ask a number of questions about the business issuing the tender opportunity, including identifying their strategic objectives and the immediate issues they face.

They finished up by emphasising their four most important recommendations, as follows:  Take a strategic approach – have a long-term view,

try to identify who you want to get business from, even if it’s several years away, and try to build a relationship with them.

 Fully engage – once you’ve made the decision to bid

for something, make sure you put all the time and resources into it that are needed to do it properly.

 Get organised early – have a plan in place for the

bid process and stick to it rigidly.

 Learn from every experience – ask for feedback,

whether you win or lose.

In his summing up, Chamber CEO Dale Edwards highlighted the Hinkley supply chain portal as being one of the ways in which local businesses can get the right information in the early stages of the bidding and tendering process. He emphasised the importance of ensuring that the information on the portal, including contact details and accreditations, are up-to-date so that businesses have the best chance of being matched to opportunities identified within the project.

Sue Mountstevens, Avon and Somerset’s Police and Crime Commissioner

Which individual has had the most influence on your career and why?

Sue Mountstevens is the independent elected Police and Crime Commissioner for Avon and Somerset. She was re-elected in May 2016 following over three years as the area’s first Police and Crime Commissioner

What do you enjoy most about your position as Police and Crime Commissioner?

My father, for his wise words and all that he taught me.

His word was his bond.

Being your Police and Crime Commissioner is a really interesting and varied job and one of the things I most enjoy about it is meeting local people. I am continually amazed by the individuals that I meet and speak to who are making a huge difference in their local communities Born in Bristol, Sue has also been a successful business such as Neighbourhood and Speed Watch volunteers, woman, running the large family retail and wholesale carers and those who help victims to recover from their bakery for over 20 years before selling the company to ordeals. I get to meet some truly inspirational people take on different interests. She has served as Vice Chair and I am always touched by their personal stories. When you were at school, what did you want to be when you grew up?

the growing demand from complex and resource intensive crimes such as; child sexual abuse including exploitation, rape and other serious sexual offences, domestic abuse, hate crime and cyber-crime. In the past year (1st April 2015 – 31st March 2016) there has been a 139% increase in child sexual exploitation recorded crime and a 44% increase in rape recorded crime. This presents huge challenges for the police and I will continue to be a fierce advocate for victims and ensure the most vulnerable are protected, particularly our children who should be able to live in a society free from violence and abuse.

How big an issue is business crime in Somerset and what is being done to tackle it?

Business crime is a growing issue. Just over 26,000 business crimes were recorded within Avon and Somerset at the end of this financial year (April 2016).

This is 22% of all crime recorded in Somerset and we have seen a 2% increase year on year. To help tackle this the Constabulary are improving relationships with local businesses and crime reduction partners by appointing three police leads for business crime in each of the three policing areas. This is a really positive step and just shows how seriously the issue is being taken. There is a lot of other work going on such as improving the methods for crime reporting, and data and intelligence sharing, including CCTV evidence. As well as a focus on high criminal threat and ‘hot spots’ are tactics to disrupt and destroy organised criminal gangs.

How can businesses protect themselves better?

Businesses can better protect themselves by sharing intelligence with other businesses, local police and local crime reduction partnerships such as SWBAC in Somerset, or even join a shop watch or pub watch What are you hoping for from the new Home scheme if it’s appropriate to their business. Everyone Secretary, Amber Rudd? should be alert to suspicious activity and, if possible and appropriate, install modern CCTV equipment. The Home Office aborted its plans to reform the formula, following even greater concerns from PCC’s and police chiefs about the weighting of particular indicators the Home Office were proposing to use. For example, the new proposed formula did not include crime data and population of an individual police force area was not weighted as highly as other socio-economic factors. I hope the new Home Secretary takes the time to look at this issue during this Parliament.
