he last eighteen months have been outstanding! Our team has been working diligently every day to continue the mission that was started by Rev. C. C. Young more than ninety two (92) years ago. Our 20-acre campus in Dallas is a 24/7 facility and is now home to more than 460 residents. We employ over 300 people who work tirelessly to make sure our residents are well-served throughout the continuum of care we provide. In addition to the daily services currently offered, we took time in 2014 to envision what the next fifteen years might look like. What will the campus look like physically? What will need to change to adapt to future market trends? How will we be structured? What other business models might help us stay relevant and be useful to those we serve? Who are those we serve and how might we be able to serve more? How can we best leverage our collaborative relationships to enhance services? I am happy to report that we now have a vision to address many of those questions. No one has a crystal ball to see into the future; however, with focus and mission-driven leadership, we were able to sort through conversations and ideas and come up with a Strategic Plan and Master Plan for the next ten to fifteen years. You can learn more about the process in the Master Plan article in this issue. We are excited about the future! Join us for this journey!

THE MASTER

T

he year 2014 was pivotal for C. C. Young’s future. Starting with initial meetings in late 2013, the Strategic Plan for the next 10-15 years was developed throughout 2014, incorporating input from residents, staff, strategic vendors, a strategic planning consultant and members of the Board of Directors. The planning process included a series of Strategic Planning Task Force work sessions, two full-day planning sessions with an expanded group of participants, input from a Mission and Vision Task Force, and additional review and comment from a representative group of C. C. Young stakeholders. The full Board of Directors discussed the Strategic Plan during its September meeting and adopted the plan on December 16th, 2014.

PLAN

C. C. Young’s logo includes the phrase, “Where the Spirit is Ageless.” To explain that sentiment and also our philosophy, these core tenets are the foundation for everything we do:

1. We believe that creativity is a way of celebrating life every day. People can join in that celebration at every stage of life. 2. We believe the celebration is more vibrant, more meaningful and more energizing when it is shared across generations. 3. We work with collaborators to build an atmosphere that values people of all ages with daily opportunities for personal growth and creativity no matter their limitations. Continued on page 2

E X E C UTIV E C O M M I T T E E Part of the Strategic Plan for the coming years includes creating a special team to facilitate all the activity required. Please meet and congratulate our Executive Committee led by Russell Crews:

THE MASTER PLAN Continued from page 1

Our vision? Fifteen years from now, we see an organization that has become and is recognized as a premier senior living organization in North Texas for those seeking a vital, meaningful retirement; we have become the region’s focal point for ‘vibrant aging’; we have fully developed a focus on personalized, holistic service throughout each level and types of care/ service offered; we have grown in response to our calling and Core Purpose; and we have transformed the breadth of our services to serve those who choose to live outside of our campus(es). During the next three to five years we will advance toward fulfilling our fifteen

year ‘portrait’ by pursuing the following primary strategic directions:

Lawther Point East and West buildings and The Cove will be replaced by more Independent Living residences. There are many variables which determine the actual start date of construction. Plans have been submitted to the City of Dallas for zoning approval and planning is also underway to launch a capital campaign later this year. The goal is to start construction late 2016 or early 2017. The plan has many steps and many phases throughout the fifteen year plan. When all is complete, the campus may look like the map below.

• Transform programs, care and perceptions. • Continue the transformation of the campus. • Ensure a durable business model.

The first, most visible component of our campus transformation will be the construction of a new, state of the art Health Center. This new Health Care facility will include additional Assisted Living residences and will also house our Memory Care Assisted Living. Once construction is complete, and residents are moved into the new facility, the existing

Selections vary according to the time of year or occasion, but popular, high-energy standards and those that are perfect for sing-alongs are always part of the mix. John is grateful for the support team behind the band. Residents help produce song sheets, lead singing, provide audio-visual support and do whatever behind-the-scenes work is needed. Which brings us to the role of Jeanne, John’s wife of 64 years. “She claps and plays ‘second fiddle,’” says John. No band can flourish without that kind of support!

ERMA THOMSON:

Committed To Residents, Family, And Having A Good Time

E

rma Thomson, 91, is a person you can count on—to be a great daughter, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, and loyal employee and friend. Her past and life today show that she’s a person who’s in for the long haul when she makes commitments. Case in point: She began working for cosmetics maven Mary Kay Ash in 1966 as a secretary when only 10 people were on the payroll. Even with a fledgling company, she “just had a good feeling” about her undefined

role and clicked immediately with Mary Kay. Thus began a whirlwind partnership between the two, as Mary Kay’s cosmetics business flourished and Erma was given more and more responsibility. She retired in 1994 with almost 30 years of service. Today, limos still collect Erma at C. C. Young for important company events. As it turned out, her retirement from Mary Kay was opportune, as Erma’s mother became ill and she became her caregiver. Erma then began living with her mother, illustrating the value she places upon family and helping others.

3

After her mother’s death and the selling of the family home, Erma knew exactly where she wanted to live: C. C. Young, specifically The Overlook. “I didn’t even look at another place,” she said. “I love it here because everyone – staff and residents – are so friendly. And my apartment is just perfect for me.” She’s a moving presence on the C. C. Young campus, especially around The Overlook. With her outgoing personality, she uses Thursday night Mexican Train dominoes games and playing the washboard with the Mockingbird Point Music Makers to get to know other residents better. Her washboard is adorned with two bright daisies and a sink drainer that she added “’cause it makes a really nice sound when I hit it.” That’s Erma – bringing enthusiasm, a ready laugh and an above-and-beyond approach to life that makes everyone want to know her better.

CHARLES POWERS Brings Vitality, Spirit Of Fun To 4847 West Lawther Charles Powers, 89, wasn’t sure that C. C. Young (CCY) was right for him when he moved to Lawther Point West in February 2014. But frequent hospital stays, the recent death of his wife of 57 years and family urging convinced him to give it a try. Before long, and without looking at any other senior communities, Charles was well enough to move to The Blanton. He already had a connection to CCY after attending the Dallas Historical Society meetings that were held on site. Charles is a people-person, and he likes to make things happen. These attributes perhaps were furthered along by his decades-long association with the late Charles Sammons, the Dallas billionaire, businessman and philanthropist who became Power’s mentor as he worked closely with Sammons in various financial roles before retiring. As a new resident, Charles made it a point to get to know as many people as

possible. He helped form a pool-playing team of Blanton residents, calls weekly bingo games and regularly frequents CCY’s various buildings on his scooter to visit others. He was appointed to the Resident Council last spring. And if a volunteer is needed for most any project, Charles is the guy. Lillian Gips, 92, worked with Charles on a basil-seed-planting project for Blanton residents, the impetus for the plants on Blanton’s patios that Charles watered, trimmed and babied. Lillian likes how Charles throws himself into projects and stays active “to keep having fun,” she says. Says Charles, “I’m interested in other people, and I work at learning about them. If I stayed in my apartment and watched TV all the time, I wouldn’t know half the people I do or about what goes on around here. “I want to be a ‘plus factor’ around here, someone who contributes.”

Sisters Say C. C. Young Fits Both Their Lifestyles

A

ll kinds of circumstances bring residents to C. C. Young. Consider the stories of sisters Mary Gay George and Jeanne Witt. Both sisters knew about C. C. Young from visiting their friend and CCY resident Virginia McDonald (and her husband before his death) for years. Sadly, Virginia died on Nov. 4 after a long illness. The three had been friends for 65 years, and Mary Gay and Jeanne miss her deeply. For Mary Gay, living alone was totally jarring after her husband’s death. And when a robbery occurred in her home, she was beside herself. “One night after the robbery, I woke up from a sound sleep and a thought hit me so strong that I sat up. Then, I just said out loud: ‘C. C. Young.’ I knew that was where I was supposed to live. I moved into The Asbury as fast as I could,” said Mary Gay. Jeanne’s husband also died, leaving

her with a home and a garden to care for alone. Her children believed that was too much responsibility. Shortly thereafter, a room down the hall from her sister at The Asbury miraculously became available.

Mary Gay George (L) and Jeanne Witt (R)

Just like that, Jeanne was in a new home that better fit her new way of life! “I still miss my garden -- I can’t lie,” she said, explaining that gardening and anything that gets her outside are her pas-

sions. “But I’ve had some health problems so this really is a better place for me. And everyone here is so nice.” Mary Gay and Jeanne see each other frequently, which allows them to banter back and forth like they’ve no doubt done since girlhood. The two spend their free time differently. Mary Gay plays bridge, belongs to book clubs and loves attending lectures and classes at The Point. (“It’s like a college campus over there.”) Jeanne spends every moment she can outside, enjoying the sun on her face and watching what’s happening on campus. “There’s always a breeze blowing, even when it’s hot,” she said. “And as I spend time on campus, I’ve really gotten to know people.” And no matter what happens, Mary Gay and Jeanne both know a sister is just a few doors away.
