Woman killed and 15 others injured after huge explosion at a block of flats near Barcelona

Cause of explosion remains unclear although gas technicians have been seen at the site A WOMAN has died and 15 others have been wounded after an explosion ripped through a block of flats near Barcelona.

Shocking images of the burning building emerged after the blast at 8.30am today in Premia de Mar north east of the Catalan capital.

One person has died following an explosion in a second floor flat outside Barcelona Flames could be seen erupting from block of flats after the blast Officials have said that one person, believed to be a middle-aged woman, was killed in the blast and 15 injured.

Two of the injured are believed to be in a serious condition.

The explosion happened in a second floor flat of a seven storey block in the coastal resort.

from a window in a desperate bid to reach safety. The explosion ignited a fire, which has now been put out by emergency services.

Officials evacuated the building and neighbouring blocks.

A HIGH school in Valencia has sent a pupil home and refused to let her back into class unless she takes off her hiyab, or headscarf, reports SOS Racism.

The teenager is Muslim and of Moroccan descent, but was born in Spain and has Spanish nationality, and wears the hiyab out of choice, and when she was ordered on the first day back at school after the summer break to take her scarf off, she reported the incident to the Valencia-based branch of the anti-xenophobia charity.

Other organisations the complaint has been shared with include Movement Against Intolerance, the Civic Platform Against Islamophobia, and Valencia’s Islamic Cultural Centre, and it has been referred to the regional and national ombudsman.

According to the pupil, she was called into the headmaster’s office on the first day of term and told ‘in no uncertain terms’ to remove her hiyab and that she would not be allowed back in school the next day if she was still wearing it.

She has now missed over a week of school as a result. The various organisations have been in contact with the regional education minister, who sent out the schools inspector to investigate. Once the inspector was confident the pupil’s version was completely accurate, he called the headmaster to his office for a meeting to ‘request he change his attitude’. The inspector said the headmaster had made a ‘closed and literal interpretation’ of a school dress code article which

forbids students from wearing headgear in class, but which was drawn up with the aim of preventing them wearing balaclavas, baseball hats or woolly hats pulled down to cover their faces.

SOS Racism points out that the hiyab does not cover any part of the face, only the hair and neck, and criticises the fact that it ‘has had no effect whatsoever’ explaining to the headmaster that the rule ‘must be interpreted appropriately’ and ‘in accordance with pupils’ fundamental rights’.

This includes the right to free religious affiliation and expression, something which is enshrined in the Spanish Constitution and in the European Charter on Human Rights.

According to SOS Racism, it is continuing to urge the school to change its stance on the hiyab in order to allow the student to continue with her education ‘as is her basic right’. The charity says that, regrettably, this is not an isolated case – in fact, for this school alone, it is the fifth, and is frequently seen in ‘many other schools’ in the three provinces of the Valencia region.

It stresses that a hiyab does not impede the ‘functioning of the class’ or students’ learning, does not prevent the wearer being identified, nor create any security or communication problems, since it is merely a headscarf and leaves the face completely uncovered - meaning ‘the only possible motive for the decision is an underlying Islamophobia’.

Regional deputy president and minister for equality, Mònica Oltra (Compromís) says her colleagues in the education department are taking the matter very seriously.

“One of our commitments to our public is the freedom to express their religious diversity and, in the case of the hiyab, this is merely a religious, cultural and gender symbol – in the same way as we have little girls’ ears pierced when they’re babies,” says Oltra.

“We have to be very careful about religious freedom, cultural diversity and freedom of self-image, since all of these are very mixed in all schools.

“A headscarf does not present any kind

of collective or individual humiliation, but forcing someone to remove it – I believe that this goes against Article 14 of the Spanish Constitution, and we have to respect diversity, and recognise that we are all equal in the face of this diversity.

“There’s no homogeneous clothing style or personal image that we all follow, and I would not want to live in a society where we were all required to look exactly the same.

“With or without my minister’s hat on, I do not want anyone – especially women – to be forced to wear something they don’t want to wear, but neither do I want any woman to be forced to remove a perfectly inoffensive item of clothing.

Brits in racing cars caught at twice the speed limit on single-carriageway road

BRITISH and Canadian drivers nearly doubling the speed limit in souped-up McLaren racing cars on a Navarra highway have been fined €600 each.

In the space of seven seconds, as many McLarens shot past, all close together, at kilometre 24 of the

single-carriageway NA132 from Estella to Sangüesa via Tafalla, as they passed the exit for Larraga.

The speed limit is 90 kilometres per hour (just over 56mph) and the two Brits and one Canadian who were caught were driving at 163, 167 and 171 kilometres per hour

(about 102mph, 104mph and 107mph).

A flood of calls was made to the 112 emergency hotline, with some drivers saying they had been 'overtaken by seven aeroplanes'.

Pound still fragile after Brexit

Luke Trevail, a currency exchange specialist at forex brokers TorFX, looks at the factors driving the pound’s exchange rate this week.

Despite the political worlds getting back to work earlier in September, the currency markets still appear to be on their holidays with relatively little in the way of any movement over the last week.

The narrow trading range has been between €1.18 and €1.17 since the move down following the ECB’s comments of last week.

When you consider we were above €1.2050 earlier in the month, the move downwards has highlighted the lack of appetite that the pound has and, for me, brings into focus the fragility to the currency over the coming weeks and months.

The Bank of England met yesterday and were

reassuringly steady on their predictions for the UK economy in the longer term. “The Committee now expects less of a slowing in the UK GDP growth in the second half of 2016”. This should mean that economic growth expectations for the UK get revised up which would ordinarily strengthen the pound. Any hope of a pound party was dampened however when the sentiment from the minutes of the meeting suggested that a further interest rate cut from 0.25 to 0.1% could be on the cards when they next meet in November. This helps to underline the fact that the pound is still on shaky ground.

The European Union leaders are meeting in Slovakia today and discussing primarily how to regain trust after the UK voted for Brexit. In addition to the economy, Angela Merkel said that they need to improve on security, defence cooperation and staving off the threat of contagion with other countries joining the UK in their decision to leave the bloc.

Theresa May will not attend the meeting as officially the Brexit strategy is not on the agenda.

With Merkel stating that “solutions for Europe are needed” as “we are in a critical situation”, some form of protection from the rain coming from under the cloud of uncertainty that is Brexit, could go far.

Roquetas Mayor And Son-InLaw Named In Fraud Allegations

The mayor of Roquetas has once again been named in a court action, this time against him and his son-inlaw. The allegations, going back many years, concern the granting of contracts within the municipality, to the company Jarquil Green, worth millions of euros. It’s not the first time the mayor, Gabriel Amat, has been embroiled in fraud and corruption allegations during his 25 year term in office.

The mayor’s son-in-law, Jose Zapata, was a director of the company, Jarquil Green between 2008 and 2014.

After an investigation instigated by the United Left political party, the Provincial Prosecutors Office decided last week to uphold the complaint and made a formal announcement of the charges against the two and also one other person. The serious charges are listed as, Fraud, Deception, Misrepresentation of Fact and Prohibited Official Public Activity.

The case has now been sent to the courts in Roquetas which will initiate the necessary public investigation, based on a large document submitted by the Guardia Civil. The document contains details of five contracts in particular that were granted during the period Jose Zapata was with the company. One of those contracts, for the provision of palm trees worth in excess of 30,000 euros, was questioned at the time by three other companies who tendered for the work. They wondered why the contract had been awarded to a company – Jarquil Green – which had only been set up a few months before.

Urbaser, the firm which provides the refuse collection and cleaning service for Roquetas, has also been implicated in the investigation. Their contract was

World’s oldest fish hooks found in Japanese island cave

A pair of ancient fishhooks found in a cave in Japan. The two fishhooks are made from sea snail shells Archaeologists have found the world’s oldest fish hooks in a cave on the Japanese island of Okinawa.

The pair, dating from about 23,000 years ago, were carved from sea snail shells and found with other ancient relics, according to a paper.

It is thought humans inhabited the island from at least 30,000 years ago, surviving despite scarce resources.

The findings suggest a wider use of advanced maritime technology in that era than previously thought.

Modern humans first moved to offshore islands some 50,000 years ago.

While fishing has been essential for early humans to spread around the planet, it is unclear how the technology evolved, with evidence limited to sites in Indonesia and Papua New Guinea.

“The new evidence demonstrates a geographically wider distribution of early maritime technology that extended north to the mid-latitude areas along the western Pacific coast,” according to the National Academy of Sciences.

The fish hooks predate ones found in Timor, thought to be at least 16,000 years old, and Papua New Guinea, from at least 18,000 years ago.

Also found in the cave were two partially carved fish hooks, tools, beads and food debris.

renewed last year for the provision of the service, but many opposition councillors questioned the validity of the renewal, saying that no other companies were considered.

In a joint venture, Jarquil Green and Urbaser were awarded a 200,000 euro contract in 2008 for the Botanical Gardens; a subsequent 40,000 euros was later added to the deal. The Prosecutors Office states that this award was made, quote, ‘In an unjustifiable way,’ and added that, ‘No reasonable consideration was given to other offers,’ two of which were substantially lower than the Jarquil Green/Urbaser tender. It also questions the increase in the budget once the contract had been awarded.

Possibly the most contentious and largest contract was for the Shield Plan, a scheme to improve green spaces within the municipality. It was far reaching, covering not only Roquetas, but Aguadulce, El Parador and Vicar: it was worth in the region of 800,000 euros and handed to the Jarquil Green/Urbaser consortium. The prosecutor’s statement says, ‘There is no available evidence on record to show what evaluation was made of the proposals, or the appropriateness of the offer made by Jarquil Green/ Urbaser.’

It goes on to say that two other bids – both below the price agreed with Jarquil Green – were turned down, but again, there is no record of why those decisions were made. So once again, it’s not possible to know the reasons that led to Jarquil Green/Urbaser being awarded the contract.

In 2009, the Jarquil Green/Urbaser consortium was given another large contract, worth over 400,000 euros, for the construction of new bicycle routes. Fifteen other groups submitted bids for the work, all of which were virtually identical, but yet again the work went to the company who had secured a number of very lucrative contracts in the past few years - Jarquil Green. The Prosecutors Office says that, ‘It is suspicious that there

is no evidence in writing to justify why the work was given to the highest priced offer from the joint venture.’

It is also alleged that the full amount of work set out in the terms of the contracts was not carried out, as sums of money – in one case, 35,000 euros – had been set aside to cover the cost of procuring the contracts.

The Prosecutors Office statement says there are certain irregularities which must be looked into regarding these and other contracts which have not been specified, adding, ‘It must be determined why one company was favoured to the detriment of others and also to the detriment of the public purse.’

As I reported last week, initial proceedings have also been started in the local courts regarding the council’s proposed development of the land between Roquetas and Aguadulce known as Las Salinas. The mayor has in the past been named and subsequently cleared, in a number of corruption scandals, most notably over the building of the Gran Plaza, the Auditorio Theatre and a housing development in Las Marinas.

A statement issued by Mr Amat last week said he was calm and had trust in the powers of justice, adding, ‘I am willing to collaborate with the justice department and hope that will expedite all procedures in this respect to prove my innocence as soon as possible.’ He denied awarding any contracts to his son-in-law, saying that fact had been made clear in the four enquiry commissions set up by the City Hall and conducted earlier this year.

Mr Amat has been mayor of Roquetas for 25 years and is a powerful figure in the PP – the Popular Party – holding the position of regional president.

Situated between an unfinished building site and a junk filled patch of land this 4 bedroom rustically reformed property offers lovely sea views to the front and across to a goat farm to the rear. The house has been lovingly neglected for years as the owners vacated in a rush leaving their personal possessions throughout the property.

Inside we have a single bedroom with a single bunk bed with the dirty bedclothes and pillow in place, plus a bookcase with children’s toys and books in. Next door is an unfinished bathroom (described in the loosest of terms) with open drain to allow sewer smells and insects into the property. The owners have chucked all manner of items in her which reach almost to the ceiling and most are now mouldy, rotting and smelly from the damp. Periodically flies swarm from here.

To the lounge where a single and double sofa sit; though they are full of dirt, mould. ripped and torn they were recently lovingly covered by throws freshly washed by the owner. Behind the sofas the wall is crumbling from the damp coming from the adjacent store room. A table hides a broken stereo and satellite receiver.

The log burner's chimney is rusty and rotten top to bottom creating a charming fire and smoke hazard. The TV cabinet has kindly been moved by the owner out onto the patio outside for tenants to sit upon in the absence of any useable garden furniture. Into the dining room and 4 broken chairs and a paint splattered rickety dining table long for diners.

Rotted skirting boards add to the rustic charm. An 'antique' purple cushioned chair has been thoughtfully ripped along the top of the cushion and attacked by cats claws, the support below has been kicked away for added danger value. An 'antique' writing desk has been carefully positioned to show the mould covered interior and rubbish filled drawers to best effect. Rugs still have the dirt of decades within and beneath them for added oldy worldy rustic feel.

A modern touch to both dining room and lounge is the timber effect laminate flooring that was damaged years ago by rain water and damp; now it gives a delicate floating and rippled trip hazard effect with broken edges. The under stair storage is filled with years of rubbish including 2 antique vacuums with UK plugs and taped up power cables.

Into the kitchen where every cupboard, nook and cranny is filled with grease covered implements, utensils, storage jars and random stuff. A grease spattered 'antique' toaster again with Uk plug is available for tenants use. Some seriously stained and ruined cooking pots are included. The oven makes a charming metal screeching sound as the fan rotates and the washing machine only does a cold wash. Sadly the fridge freezer that was running at room temperature for years was replaced by the owner so now a 50€ replacement will chill the tenants food and drink. Still in place is the grime covered floor standing fan with the security grille removed for a more exciting cooling experience. Two ripped breakfast stools are also included. There are no skirting boards below the kitchen units as it’s easier for tenants to find any rodents that way.

Out to bedroom one; avoid the wobbly wooden hatch in the floor. Half the skirting boards are missing and there are no sheets or a mattress cover for the bed.

There is however a chest packed full of

grimy ripped sheets plus a choice of filth covered pillows available. A small wobbly dresser if touched will release its heavy marble back onto the floor, The patio doors cleverly have gaps top and bottom to allow easy access for insects and rodents. The terrace has a dirty upended chair to admire the view across to the goat farm.

The en suite has no shower curtain, a broken towel rail and a permanent leak under the basin which leaks into the wall and onto the floor. Back into the hallway and a water cooler has been left with a decade of dust and filth upon and behind it. Tenants are welcome to clean it up and see if it works.

Bedroom 2 has 2 broken wall lights with the live wires carefully left exposed, an 'antique' TV on a grime covered stand sits in the corner and the bed has been cleverly arranged to display the blood stained mattress and pillows. The en suite is partly unpainted with stains throughout and again a broken towel rail.

No shower curtain is needed as by free holding the shower no water will splash.

It goes without saying that all shelves and cupboards in both downstairs bedrooms contain the owners possessions.

Upstairs to the rubbish filled utility room.

For hot water tenants will periodically need to carry heavy gas bottles up the stairs to the temperamental boiler. The 4th bedroom is accessed via the terrace through an unlocked door. The mattress is too small for its broken base and has been left unmade for guests with a couple of chests again filled with the owner’s paraphernalia. A grease covered oil filled radiator is available though we were unwilling to touch it to check it works. There is a library of books left in the bookcase and further rickety 'antique' items of dirty furniture.

The en-suite has been left without a shower curtain as Spain’s hot weather means spilt water easily evaporates.

Though without an extractor fan we're not sure where the water goes to in any of the bathrooms. A quick look up reveals the loft door which has flaking plaster all around and lends a worry of it falling in.

Outside to the large roof terrace and 2 broken sun loungers lie in wait. Plus 4 broken chairs, a handy blue dirty plastic sheet and a broken down slime covered hot tub that 'only needs a service' we are told if the tenants would like to arrange to pay for it. In heavy rain the terrace ingeniously has only one small water escape and instead of it flowing away outside of the building; it’s designed to flow into the central courtyard below. A brick is there ready to cover up the hole real quick; otherwise the courtyard below fills quickly with rainwater and flooding will occur without fail within the property.

Tenants need to promise never to be away from the property when it starts to rain. Paddling can then be enjoyed in the puddles that stay for days.

Outside there is more broken furniture, a dead electric fan and plenty of rubbish strewn in the garden for tenants to muse about. The owner seeks tenants that will enjoy the property for its rustic and rural charm and not expect any cleaning or improvements to be made. A love of 'antiques' is also preferred. Periodic visits by the mortgage lender looking for the owner are also to be expected.

As a result of the Supreme Court’s ruling in June over the controversial mortgage ground clause, where the registration of some mortgages were deferred awaiting correction, the increase in home sales in Spain slowed to just 1.1% in July, over the same month of 2015, reaching a total of

33,084 transactions, according to the latest Transfer of Property Rights data published last week by the National Statistics Institute.

Despite this, the upward trend in home sales continued in July, and followed the increase of 19.4% which was registered in June, over the same month of the previous year. In fact the July increase would have been even greater than this if not for the court ruling.

With the July increase, home sales in Span accumulated six consecutive months of year-on-year increases.

Sales of second hand homes were responsible for the July increase, with the number of transactions rising by 2.9% year-on-year,

Rise in Spanish House Prices Moderates to 3.9% in Q2 According to the latest House Price Index data published by the National Statistics Institute, the price of housing in Spain increased by 3.9% year-onyear in the second quarter of the year, which is almost two and a half points less than the 6.3% year-on-year increase registered in the first quarter.

This most recent increase represents the ninth consecutive quarter in which housing prices have registered positive year-on-year rates.

With regard to the type of dwelling, new housing prices increased by 8.4% compared to the second quarter of 2015, which is more than two points higher than the increase registered in the previous quarter (+6.1%), while the price of second hand housing rose by 3.2% year-on-year in the second quarter, which is more than three points lower than the advance recorded in the first quarter, of +6.4%.

Quarter-on-quarter (second quarter over the first quarter of 2016), housing prices in Spain increased by 1.8%, accumulating two consecutive quarters of rises.

Between April and June the price of new housing increased by 3.7% over the previous quarter, and is 1.1 points higher than the increase registered in the first quarter.

Second hand housing prices rose by 1.5% quarter-on-quarter, compared with a rise of 1.3% registered in the previous quarter.

The HPI published by the National Statistics Institute is compatible with the requirements of Eurostat and complements data published on a quarterly basis by the Ministry of Development. Two in Ten Foreign Tourists Plan to Buy a Home in Spain

A survey carried out by the real estate franchise Iberia Real Estate in the principal coastal tourist destinations of Spain during the months of July and August, revealed that two in every ten foreign tourists to the country are considering the purchase of a second residence in Spain.

It is expected that the record tourism figures registered in Spain this year, with an increase of 6% over last year, will also have a beneficial economic impact on the real estate sector, led by German tourists, who are most interested in acquiring Spanish housing on the eastern coastal areas of the country such as Murcia, Valencia, Catalonia and Mallorca.

According to the survey, it is no longer only the traditional cities which are the most popular choice for foreign visitors, with the holiday destinations and home searches by foreign tourists this year varying greatly, from Andalucía to Cantabria and Galicia.

The main buyer profile, according to the analysis, is a male between 40 and 50 years of age with family, and the threat of terrorism in the Mediterranean is the main consideration for these potential buyers, realising that the situation has changed and that during the coming years it will be a risk to travel to once-popular places such as Tunisia, the South of France, Turkey, Egypt and other Arab countries which until recently were top preferred tourism destinations.

Rightmove: Starter Home Asking Prices Jump in August

Property website Rightmove reported signs of a return to form in the housing market as asking prices went up across the UK between August and September.

According to Rightmove’s latest monthly report, the average asking price for a newly listed property in the UK increased by 0.7% over August to reach £306,499.

This jump signals something of a rebound following an average drop in asking prices of 2.0% over June and July, but still remains lower than the 0.9% increase seen for the same period in 2014 and 2015.

The biggest jump was seen in so-called starter homes – that is, “newly marketed home[s] with two bedrooms or fewer” – aimed at first time buyers. Asking prices for homes falling in this bracket grew by 3.3% over August, form £188,237 to £194,477. This represented an annual asking price increase of 10.5% (or £18,450) for these types of homes.

This, according to Rightmove’s Miles Shipside, will serve to further “maroon” first time buyers who may have been quietly optimistic about the chances of the slump in house price inflation that was expected by many to follow the Brexit vote.

Shipside said: “Some of those trying to get onto the property ladder may have wistfully listened to speculation of lower prices in a post-Brexit Britain.

“While the referendum result has created additional downwards price pressure in some upper segments of the market that were already slowing, those who do not own a home and arguably have the greatest housing need are now finding it harder to achieve their goal in the post-Brexit-vote aftermath.

“In their favoured target sector with two-bedrooms or fewer average asking prices have jumped by over £6,000 in the last month as we enter the typically active Autumn market.”

The first time buyer market has been fairly turbulent this year, with the stamp duty hike in April causing many smaller homes to be snapped up by private landlords and prospective second home owners. This reduced the supply available for first time buyers, pushing prices up.

The extent of the boost in this particular sector of the market is highlighted when compared to other areas of the market.

Asking prices for so-called “second stepper” homes, the next “rung up the ladder”, went up by just 0.5% in August, representing an annual increase of just over 5%, while at the top of the market, covering houses with four or more bedrooms, asking prices were 1.2% higher than a month ago, with annual price growth of just 2.7%.

Shipside explained: “The rising tide of prices is marooning more and more firsttime buyers, out-stripping their ability to meet stricter lending criteria and afford the required deposits and monthly repayments.

“With an average rise of over 10% in prices of typical first-time buyer properties over the last 12 months, minimum entry prices in some locations will go above what lenders are able to lend to most aspiring first-time buyers. Ironically the post-referendum uncertainty has made some sellers of larger and higher value homes more willing to negotiate, making it easier for those already on the ladder to trade up.

The City of Cadiz

Cadiz stands on a peninsula jutting out into a bay, and is almost entirely surrounded by water. Named Gadir by the Phoencians, who founded their trading post in 1100 BC, it was later controlled by the Carthaginians, until it became a thriving Roman port. It sank into oblivion under the Visigoths and Moors, but attained great splendour in the early 16th century as a launching point for the journey to the newly discovered lands of America. Cadiz was later raided by Sir Francis Drake, in the struggle to gain control of trade with the New World, and managed to withstand a siege by Napoleon's army.

Worth a visit are the city's Cathedral and churches of Santa Cruz and San Felipe Neri, which is famous throughout Spain as the place where, in defiance of Napoleon's siege, the provisional government was set up with its own liberal Constitution. Other points of interest are La Santa Cueva, home to several paintings by Goya, and

Unlike most other ports of its size it seems immediately relaxed and easy going, not at all threatening, even at night. Perhaps this is due to its reassuring shape and size, the presence of the sea making it impossible to get lost for more than a few blocks. Question: I jointly own a property in Spain with somebody I no longer get on with and he refuses to sell and split the funds.

What can I do?

Answer: The best option would be to jointly sell or for one to buy the other one out. In Spain there is a special deed which is used to do this and allows the person acquiring the half to pay tax of 1.5% of the total value of the property, as opposed to the normal transfer tax of 8% on that half.

If the other party refuses to go along and be reasonable we can force the issue. There is a special court procedure to deal with this.

Our experience shows

that as soon as the other party realises that we can indeed force the issue using the courts, they tend to agree to settle the case, very often in favourable conditions to our clients.

Typical scenario: A couple purchases a property in Spain in joint names. The relationship deteriorates.

The economically weak partner will wish to sell and the other party claims that he/she will only pay a ridiculously low amount for the other half, and that he will not accept any different. The necessity of money sometimes leads the weak partner to accept an unreasonable settlement due to the urgency for money.

Global banking watchdog warns over Chinese banks

Risks of a Chinese banking crisis are mounting, according to a warning indicator from the banking industry's global watchdog.

A key gauge of stress in the banking sector is now more than three times above the danger level, the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) said in its latest quarterly review.

China's credit-to-GDP gap hit 30.1 in the first quarter of 2016, it said.

The BIS considers a credit-to-GDP gap of 10 to be a sign of potential danger.

A year ago the BIS quarterly review put the figure for China at 25.4.

The BIS calculates the gap by looking at borrowing in relation to the size of the economy, and comparing that with the longterm trend of that ratio.

When the two start to diverge, the BIS argues, a banking crisis could be on the way.

The BIS has a central position in global finance as it provides banking services to central banks and monitors the international flow of money and credit.

Luncheon Etiquette

A family lunch in Spain, to the uninitiated can sound rather like a drunken fist-fight while a family luncheon in Alqueria has been known to mobilise the army.

The Alquerian variety is full of contradictions. Certainly anarchy prevails, but it is anarchy with a protocol.

Unlike the northern European counterpart one must arrive early for lunch. It isn’t a matter of politeness it is the Alquerian penchant for malevolent gossip. To arrive early makes one a gossiper, to arrive late one becomes the ‘gossipee’. The traditional gossip will have an initial nucleus of truth but by the time the individual in question arrives he or she will be held responsible for every global misfortune from the Black Death to the Tory Party. Many victims have had to leave Alqueria and live in Spanish exile. Amalia Culogrande who arrived very late now lives incognito in a large paper bag behind Loco Paco’s dung beetle stables.

The most important rule when attending any sort of occasion in Alqueria where food is involved is, you mustn’t eat anything. This is not a matter of protocol or politeness it is a matter of survival. The astute among you will ask the question.

‘Why attend the luncheon party in the first place?’ In answer to this I will draw the reader’s attention to the above paragraph.

One has to develop the technique of pretending to eat. Politicians are good at

this as they are highly trained in the art of ‘pretending to tell the truth’ which gives them the edge. Would be diners must learn to masticate thin air and swallow imaginary morsels of imaginary food. To reinforce the impression of eating one can pretend to have indigestion, a bout of flatulence will add that finishing touch.

Not actually eating the food does leave one with a problem, mainly the food remains on the plate.

A small hungry rodent such as the Alquerian Three Toed Stenchrat can be smuggled in and surreptitiously feed but animal rights groups are against this practice. A better solution can be had at Pepe Malaropa’s Clothing Emporium where suits and party frocks can be bought with hidden waterproof pockets especially constructed for the hiding of food.

One may however consume the liquid refreshment. Remitroot, whether in the form of beer, wine or spirits is the jewel in the crown of Alquerian cuisine. While I was carrying out my research in Alqueria I had my first taste if Remitroot Whisky.

After my third glass I passed out, when I regained consciousness I was driving a refrigerated lorry to Düsseldorf.

So armed with the above advice one can accept that luncheon invitation with confidence and dine like only an Alqueria can.

This was becoming a pattern, and the pattern was not to my liking. I made sure the plugs in the bathroom were pushed home, checked the blinds and squirted fly killer liberally over the entire bedroom. I waited until the room became habitable again, and went to bed secure in the knowledge that there would be no mozzies tonight.

Until zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!

Where do they come from? How do they get in? And why is there only ever one? I thought mozzies liked to hunt in packs. If there were several I could understand that the Biggs antimosquito measures were faulty, but one every night?

Our bedroom walls now have a stippled design – very pale yellow with a smattering of small red blobs! It is my equivalent of notches on a cowboy’s gun – each blob represents the death of a mozzie!

Yet every night there is still always one.

I was lying on my bed in the heat of the night. The new moon shone innocently through the open window and the closed mozzie blinds. I was encouraging sleep by practicing my own version of Zen, which I am sure bears very little resemblance to the real thing.

Sleep looked achievable until I heard – zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz right next to my ear.

I flailed out with my hand, catching myself a hefty smack on the side of my head as I did so. I listened – all was silent, so I must have got the little b*****. I had just reached a crucial point in my re-negotiation with Sleep when –zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!

Once more I flailed out. Once more my poor head took the full force of my irritation. Once more there was silence.

Must have got it this time!

In all this scenario was played out at least 6 times until exhaustion took over, and I slept.

Next morning I woke, scratched my brand new mozzie bite, and set about finding the perpetrator. And when I did, I squashed it with immense pleasure.

Next night I conducted a thorough search of the entire house, and pronounced it mozzie-free before going to bed. Just as sleep was imminent – zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!

That night was a re-run of the previous night. The morning also.

It must be co-incidence, I thought - 2 mozzies on consecutive nights; Nevertheless, that evening I swept the house for these minions of the Devil, and found none.

Encouraged by this dearth of mozzies I went to bed, and was nearly asleep

Rinse and drain the marrow, then place in a preserving pan or large saucepan with the shallots, apples, sultanas, ginger, sugar and vinegar. Tie the peppercorns in muslin (or put into a small enclosed tea strainer) and place in the pan.

Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat and simmer, stirring from time to time, until the consistency is thick.

All over Spain during the month of September there are grape harvest festivals (see Fiestas de la Vendimia).

On the international stage wines from the la Rioja region are the most famous with annual production surpassing 250 million litres so you can imagine the enormity of wine harvest celebrations here. The local name of the festival in Logroño is ‘Las Fiestas de San Mateo’ which is named after Saint Matthew and celebrated on the 21st September which is his feast day. But what fun is there in a one day fiesta? In typical Spanish fashion a whole week is dedicated to celebrating San Mateo which typically takes place from about 16th to 23rd September though dates may vary slightly.

The ‘chupinazo’ marks the beginning of the festival when a rocket is set off in the town hall square. The rocket is the sign that a week of madness has begun as youngsters start engaging in food fights and everyone gets soaked by water thrown from balconies overlooking the streets.

Once the fiesta has officially started

m a n y people h e a d straight for Gran Via to see the incredible wine fountain where (make believe) red, white and pink wine shoots high into the sky.

The streets of the city are packed all week and you’ll spot plenty of the ‘big heads’ (Cabezudos) roaming around often following the many bands whose typical fiesta renditions make this so typical of the atmosphere of so many other fiestas all over the country. There are fireworks galore, morning bull runs and evening bullfights and one of the unique highlights is the opportunity to crush grapes by standing on them alongside hundreds of fellow festival goers.

Orchard crumble

1 butternut squash (about 600g), peeled and cut into 2cm cubes 2 tbsp olive oil 320g sheet ready-rolled puff pastry 250g tub ricotta a few sage leaves, finely chopped good grating of nutmeg zest and juice ½ lemon 70g bag of rocket 1 red chilli, deseeded and finely chopped 25g pine nut

Ingredients

Method Heat oven to 220C/200C fan/gas 7. Put the squash on a baking tray.

Toss in half the oil, season and spread out into a single layer (you may need 2 baking trays). Roast for 30-35 mins or until tender.

Meanwhile, place a large rectangle of baking parchment on a baking tray. Unroll the pastry and lay it on top. Score a 1cm border with the tip of a knife and prick the inside part all over with a fork.

400g Apples, peeled, cored and cut into small pieces 400g stoned plum, cut into chunky wedges 2 tbsp sugar, any type 300g fig, woody stalks trimmed, quartered 300g blackberry or brambles, washed well cream, custard or ice cream, to serve For the topping 140g plain flour 140g wholemeal flour 175g butter, cut into small pieces 100g soft brown sugar

Method

First make the topping. Put the flours in a bowl with a pinch of salt, then rub in the butter with your fingertips to form crumbs.

Stir in the sugar with a fork, and chill until needed.

Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/ gas 4. Tip the apples, plums and sugar into a big saucepan with 50ml water and cook, stirring, for about 5 mins, until the apples are soft and juicy.

Stir in the figs and blackberries,

and tip into a baking dish. Scatter over the crumble and bake for 45-55 mins until the topping is golden and the fruit is bubbling.

Bake in the oven for 15 mins.

Mix the ricotta, sage, nutmeg, lemon zest and plenty of seasoning in a bowl. Once the pastry and squash are cooked, remove from the oven. Gently press the centre of the pastry case down with the back of a spoon. Spread the ricotta mix into the centre. Lay on squash Bake for a further 10-15 mins until the pastry is golden and crisp. Mix the lemon juice, rocket, chilli, pine nuts and 1 tbsp oil. Scatter half over the tart and serve the rest on the side.

Food manufacturers should be forced to put "traffic light" nutrition labels on the front of packs, councils have said.

The voluntary scheme, introduced by the Department of Health in 2013, sees foods highlighted as red, amber or green according to how much salt, sugar and fat they contain.

But the labels do not appear on about a third of the food sold in the UK. The Local Government Association (LGA) said current rules were confusing and a universal labelling system was needed.

"Consumers need a single, standard and consistent system which should be universally adopted. It needs to

be something that they can read and understand quickly and easily," she said. "The UK is leading the way with its traffic light scheme, which is already widely used, and provides clear, at-a-glance information. It is something many shoppers are familiar with and find helpful. "But we want the government to go one step further and make it mandatory for all retailers and manufacturers to adopt."

Under its recently announced childhood obesity plan, the government said it would look again at how nutritional information was displayed.

Thirty-seven of fifty "World's Best" are from Spain World's Best Olive Oils has just released its ranking of the top fifty extra virgin olive oils in the world for the 2015/2016 harvest season; a list that includes a total of thirty-seven Spanish olive oils.

In addition to accounting for the vast majority of olive oils on this prestigious annual list, it should come as no surprise to fans of Spanish olive oil that thirteen of the top fifteen ranked extra virgin olive oils in the world come from Spain, of which twelve are from the region of Andalusia.

The "World's Best Olive Oils" list is compiled annually by the independent international organization World's Best Olive Oils, a non-profit group that compiles the yearly results from the top international olive oil competitions (there were fourteen in 2015/2016) and publishes a comprehensive and objective ranking of the extra virgin olive oils from around the world that

received the highest awards and points at the aforementioned competitions. These competitions, which are held in such varying markets as Japan, Los Angeles, Italy, China and Argentina, among others; also include the prestigious Mario Solinas Award, which is granted by the International Olive Council based in Madrid, and considered one of the world's strictest competitions.

Additionally, the organization publishes an annual ranking of the ten best organic extra virgin olive oils in the world. Six of the oils on this list are from Spain (five from Andalusia and one from Extremadura), including the top five.

The Road Home by Rose Tremain

I came across Rose Tremain quite by accident and just wish someone had recommended her books to me a lot earlier in life. The Road Home portrays the main character Lev, an Eastern European from somewhere such as Poland or Slovakia. We know for certain that his country was a communist one but the writer is vague about his country of origin.

Not to think about it, not to feel inside him the finality of what had happened, that was all he craved now. Nothing else.

Nothing beyond or after or yet to come.

None of that. Only the feeling of not feeling.

Amongst other things the book relates to displacement and through Lev, Lydia, Vitas and the gay Chinese migrant workers we are made aware of their struggles. That doesn’t mean that the native British characters don’t feel a similar sense of isolation because some of them do. Ruby, at the old people’s home is lonely and feels abandoned by her family and Christy, Lev’s landlord suffers depression because his wife has left him and she refuses to let him see Frankie, their daughter. He turns to alcohol.

Lev is a widower with a young daughter he idolises. His wife, Marina died at 36 and his ageing mother Ina looks after Maya whilst Lev seeks his fortune in London. It’s a hard decision for him to take and throughout the story we have plenty of contact with his mother, daughter

as well as Rudi his feisty friend, a counterpart to Lev all still living in Auror with constant flashbacks or telephone conversations.

For Lev it is a difficult journey away from his family, still grieving over Marina, angry with the Communist regime for running down the economy and allowing the timber mills to close, forcing unemployment and creating financial hardships. That has been the situation for 2 years. I have worked with many Asians who are separated from their families and loved ones in order to find work to support their families in third world and developing countries so I respect and admire their decisions to leave their families in order to do exactly what Lev was trying to do-send money and necessities home and try to save for a better future. It’s a big sacrifice to make.

We read so much about immigrants coming to the UK in particular for work who end up claiming benefits for themselves and their families, especially from Eastern Europe.

Lev is one of the decent guys, prepared to do anything to make ends meet initially. He is legal and not an asylum seeker although he is constantly facing prejudice and cruelty from British people, physically and mentally.

It was hard to leave his country of origin and he felt bitter. He wanted to become a man-of-the-world, a saviour to his family. When he didn’t have the money for accommodation he slept outside. His first

job was delivering leaflets for a kebab take-away for £5 but he couldn’t live on this meagre amount. RECORD FIELD FOR PLAS-TECH GOLF CHALLENGE In conjunction with Forum Golf Society, Aguilon Golf Course again hosted the 4th annual PLAS-TECH Challenge, and a record field of 96 local golfers enjoyed a superb day, with over €3000 worth of prizes provided by PLAS-TECH up for grabs, and including bacon rolls on arrival, free beer and barbecue afterwards, all for just €20 including a buggy it was no wonder the event sold out weeks ago.

Forum Golf Society’s Steve Vine continued his recent run of excellent form to take first prize with 42 points, with Aguilon’s Phil Miles just one point behind in second place. Lynne Whibley (37 points) was third, Keith Ryder (36 points) fourth, Terry Moore (35 points) fifth and Bill Gibb (34 points) sixth.

Thanks to PLAS-TECH’s generosity, each of the 18 holes was also a prize hole, either nearest the pin in one, two or 3, plus 2 longest drives. Thursday 15th September, time for the Monthly Medal at Aguilon Golf Resort, on a beautiful warm day with just a slight breeze and greens that are beginning to return to their normal fast receptive condition, good scores were inevitable.
