Spain’s new political map raises questions about future of bullfighting Leftist governments across the country withdraw public subsidies and plan referendums Spain’s new political map is raising questions about the future of public events involving los toros – anything from bullfights to the custom of chasing the animals down the street (or being chased by them) during local fiestas.

The municipal and regional elections of May 24 triggered a shift to the political left, and many of the new groups in power do not look favorably upon these forms of entertainment, or upon the fact that many of them are subsidized with public money.

A dozen municipalities, including major cities such as Alicante, are now planning to hold referendums on whether these events should be banned altogether.

Other cities and regions are also mulling ways of phasing them out, even as the number of bull-centered festivities grew last year, according to statistics released in May by the Education, Culture and Sports Ministry.

Madrid. The new city government, led

by Mayor Manuela Carmena of the leftist bloc Ahora Madrid, has given up its box at Las Ventas bullring. Carmena has announced that she intends to turn the Spanish capital into “an animal-friendly city” and supports eliminating all subsidies to bullfighter training schools

Balearic Islands. The leftist coalition

that controls Palma de Mallorca plans to declare the city “free of animal abuse.”

But the move will only be symbolic when it comes to bullfights, as the local ring is privately owned and holds a regional operating license. The city will ask the regional assembly to change its 1992 animal protection law in order to ban all forms of bull-related fiestas across the islands. Activists have already collected around 130,000 signatures asking for this ban.

San Sebastián. The Basque seaside town is the exception to the rule, as bullfighting is back this summer.

The Basque Nationalist Party (PNV) recovered control of city hall in May after a four-year stint under the radical leftists of Bildu, who had banned it (even though in the nearby municipality of Azpeitia, also under Bildu control, the fights were allowed to remain because of a strong fan base).

Calais Crisis: Hundreds Storm Channel Tunnel

The Home Secretary calls for EU assistance to ease the Calais migrant crisis as further security measures are announced. Hundreds of migrants stormed the Channel Tunnel overnight, pulling down fences before being halted from crossing to Britain by riot police.

Around 200 migrants broke through several layers of security before approaching the tunnel entrance. As the migrants scrambled down to the final fence line, dozens of police arrived to back up the military. The migrants and security forces faced off for close to an hour, with the migrants shouting slogans including: “Open the border” and “We are not animals”. It comes as Home Secretary Theresa May and France’s Interior Minister said the EU should step in to help Britain and France find long-term solutions to the “global migration crisis”.

Ms May and Bernard Cazeneuve said the chaos in Calais is not only a problem for the UK and France. In an article for The Sunday Telegraph, they said: “We are both clear: tackling this situation is the top priority for the UK and French governments. “We are committed and determined to solve this, and to solve it together. What we are currently facing is a global migration crisis.

“This situation cannot be seen as an issue just for our two countries. It is a priority at both a European and international level.

“Many of those in Calais and attempting to cross the Channel have

made their way there through Italy, Greece or other countries. “That is why we are pushing other member states, and the whole of the EU, to address this problem at root.”

A new package of measures has been agreed which will see security ramped up at the Channel Tunnel. The steps include 200 extra private security guards funded by the UK, French police reinforcements, additional fences provided by Britain and more CCTV. Downing Street admitted the UK would fund “most if not all” of the new security measures in Calais.

It comes after David Cameron called French President Francois Hollande to discuss the migrant crisis. The Prime Minister has warned the crisis, which has seen some 5,000 desperate migrants lay siege to the tunnel in the hope of reaching Britain, could last all summer. Harriet Harman has written to Mr Cameron demanding he ask the French to compensate Britons affected by the chaos in Calais.

Labour’s interim leader says the Prime Minister should be doing more to recoup the cost of the crisis to haulage companies, who have seen their vehicles stacked on the M20 in Kent due to disruption to ferry and Channel Tunnel services.

Recovering Spanish banks see profits rise

Major Spanish banks reported a surge in quarterly net profits on Friday as earnings soared in a sector that just three years ago had to be bailed out. BBVA, Spain’s second-biggest bank by market capitalization, said net profits rose 73 percent to €1.2 billion ($1.3 billion) in the second quarter.

The third-biggest, CaixaBank, said its net earnings doubled to €333 million. In the case of BBVA, “robust activity and an excellent margin performance confirm the profit growth cycle continues,” said the bank’s president, Carlos Torres, in a statement.

The Bilbao-based lender generated gains of €144 million in the quarter from exceptional events including the sale of a stake in Chinese bank CNCB. It echoed other Spanish banks in saying that the country’s economic recovery since 2013 after several years of recession was boosting lending. Spain received a €41 billion bailout for its banks from eurozone partners in 2012 to save its financial sector from collapse. In the second quarter, the bank more than doubled its profit from its business in Spain to €462 million from a year earlier.

Spain bungee jump death: Two charged with manslaughter of Kleyo De Abreu Two people have been charged with manslaughter after a woman died while bungee jumping in Spain.

Kleyo De Abreu, 23, from London, was killed on 21 July in Lanjaron, Granada, while jumping from the Tablate Bridge.

The Guardia Civil has charged the owner of an adventure company and a bungee jump supervisor with her death. Its

investigation found there was miscommunication between the supervisor and Miss De Abreu, who jumped before the equipment had been made safe. One supervisor had been left to monitor 14 people taking part in the bungee jump, which was “not enough” to guarantee customer safety, police found.

To anyone who has ever enjoyed an afternoon nap while ensconced in a hammock gently rocking between two trees, it will come as no surprise that this centuries-old snoozing sling can help people fall asleep faster and achieve deeper slumber than regular beds, according to new research. What you may not know, however, is that the hammock has a rich and varied history, from its Mayan origins to its adoption by the military to its present-day status as a summertime backyard fixture.

Many anthropologists believe that the hammock dates back some 1,000 years to Central America, where the Maya and other indigenous peoples crafted them out of tree bark or plant fibers.

Suspended beds prevented contact with the dirty ground and offered protection from snakes, rodents and other poisonous or simply pesky creatures. According to accounts by 16th-century explorers, people would place hot coals or kindle small fires under their hammocks to stay warm or ward off insects as they slumbered.

It is thought that Columbus and his men became the first Europeans to glimpse—and perhaps experience—the hammock when they noticed their widespread use among the Taino people of the Bahamas. They brought several examples of the woven sleeping nets back to Spain. During the colonial era, Spaniards and other Europeans brought cotton, canvas and other cloths to the New World, many of which were eventually used by traditional hammock weavers along with more time-honored materials. In many parts of what is now Latin America, colonists preferred hammocks to the stationary beds of their native lands, in part because of their soothing motion and hygiene benefits. Pero de Magalhães Gandavo, the Portuguese-born chronicler of colonial Brazilian history, wrote in 1570, “Most of the beds in Brazil are hammocks, hung in the house from two cords. Unlike its counterpart on the other side of the Atlantic, however, the European take on the hammock was typically made of heavy canvas and therefore significantly less ventilated than its inspiration from the other side of the Atlantic. Sailors stewed in these portable yet famously uncomfortable beds for three centuries, including during World War I and World War II. From the Civil War until the Vietnam War, members of the U.S. Navy were also issued hammocks for sleeping on the go.

The first known mass producer of hammocks opened in Pawleys Island, South Carolina, in 1889. DIRECTIONS Start off by measuring and cutting 24 strands of rope that are each 20 feet long.

Gather all 24 strands of rope on one end, and knot them all together, leaving about one foot of rope ends hanging from the top of your knot.

You’ll also want to make sure that you leave about two feet of space between the larger knot you’ve just made in step 2 and where you’ll start your first row of knots in step 4.

To begin, take the two strands of rope on your far left (strand 1 and 2), and tie them together using a simple overhand knot. Repeat this with the next two strands, and so on, making sure that your knots are all level with one another. You should start to see the beginning of your first row of knots as you work from left to right.

Once you’ve knotted the last two strands together on your far right (strand 23 and 24), it’s time to start on another row of knots.

Leave approximately 3 inches of rope below your last knot in the row above, and the knot you will now make using strands 22 and 23. Continue to knot every two strands of rope together, moving from right to left. Make sure each new knot is level with the one next to it.

When you reach the end of this row, knot strands 2 and 3 together, leaving strand 1 on its own.

Skipping down a row on strand 1, knot it together with strand 2. Now you’ve created the beginning of what will be another row of knots.

Keep knotting your strands together to create another row. When you reach strand 23 and 24, knot them together, skipping down a row on strand 24 as you did with strand 1.

Repeat steps 4-9, making sure to skip a row on either end when needed. Keep making rows of knots until you have about three feet of rope strand ends left.

Knot all 24 strands of rope together, leaving about two feet of rope between this knot and your last row of knots.

Trim excess rope on either end of your hammock.

Attach hammock ends to two trees in your backyard, on your porch or take it with you to lounge on your next camping trip!

La Alfoquia is a town within the municipality of Zurgena with a mix of nationalities enjoying the traditions and customs of this locality.

The town is made up of around a thousand inhabitants, situated o¬n the left bank of the Almanzora River. El Refugio - Almeria City

Almeria City isn’t just an airport; though most just land and scuttle off to their homes or holiday destinations without wondering about what else is on offer. The City has a beautiful old quarter with excellent restaurants, tapas bars, art galleries and museums. Stunning architecture abounds, topped by the Moorish Alcazaba towering above the city.

The Paseo de Almeria is a broad tree lined boulevard; running from the port to Plaza Purchena; it’s filled with chain stores and boutiques. It’s the commercial hub of the city with some curious black news stand kiosks dotted along the way.

From a Christian family, I’d considered myself Christian since childhood, so found considerable challenge in the evolving technologies of computing, which necessitated research into subjects like ‘logical analysis’ and ‘theory of time’. Surprisingly perhaps, I actually found these strengthened, rather than weakened my faith as I observed the absolute logic of the Universe around, seemingly controlled by defined laws, running very much like a well programmed machine in which any input necessarily has a profound

and pre-determined effect.

And the more I studied Time and the implications of any consideration for manipulating that dimension, the more I found myself confronted by the inevitability of a higher power, without beginning or end, remarkably similar to the Biblical concept of God. It therefore seemed natural, once career and family constraints permitted, to offer such abilities as I possessed in service of this Lord of time and reason, as personified in Jesus Christ, so embarked on a three year (evenings and weekends) training course to be licensed as a ‘Reader’ by the Bishop of Blackburn. Now, retired, without that proper job and living in Spain, my license has been transferred to a large parish/chaplaincy (about the size of Wales) centred on Mojacar within the Diocese of Europe.

So that’s what being a Lay Reader’s all about, but of course we can all serve God without training and licensing.

When you sit and think about it, mankind has invented some amazing things. From the discovery of fire then the invention of the wheel around 3500 BC, we’ve really taken off and the years afterwards have seen amazing strides. Just look at some of the things like penicillin, the simple nail, the printing press and so on and you get to think, wow, what a pretty remarkable bunch we are!

And yes, we are. In fact, as Tony Blackburn may have said, the hits just keep on coming, with things like, television, micro chips…oven chips and so on.

But it’s not all wondrous, sometimes, as you’d expect, we let ourselves down badly with some downright silly ideas which should never have seen the light of day. So while we acknowledge the prowess of those individuals with vision, determination and insight, I’d also like to look at some of the ideas that have come from others who, well, may well have been out in the sun a bit too long.

EU driving licenses are valid for driving throughout the Spanish territory. The renewal of EU driving licenses requires the holder to undergo psychometric aptitude tests and be legally resident in Spain.

WHO NEEDS TO RENEW? The latest EU Directive 2006/126/CE states that holders of EU driving licenses that have expired or are about to expire need to renew their license.

Holders of EU driving licenses that are valid indefinitely or for more than 15 years for Group 1 (AM, A1, A2, A, B & BE) or valid for 5 years or more for Group 2 (BTP, C1, C1E, C, CE, D1, D1E, D, DE) need to renew their license providing they have been legally resident in Spain for 2 years since 19th January 2013.

TWO EXAMPLES EU license holders that are valid indefinitely or for more than 15 years, who are legally resident in Spain before or up to 19th January 2013, should renew their driving license from 19th January 2015.

EU license holders that are valid indefinitely or for more than 15 years, who are legally resident in Spain since 6th June 2014, should renew their driving license from 6th June 2016.

Bankinter Forecasting Recovery According to their latest half-yearly report on the Spanish real estate market, Bankinter estimates that average house prices in Spain will pick up gradually, increasing by around 2% during this year, and by 4% in 2016 in selective locations, contributing to the sector’s recovery, marked also by the increase in purchases.

The Bank also indicates that the improvement in employment, the lower costs of financing and the greater attraction of housing as an investment, compared with other alternatives, will boost the demand, which will grow moderately to reach a level slightly above 400,000 homes in 2016.

However, they do not see the current cycle of recovery generating a new boom in the housing demand, although it will create the conditions for sales to soar this year up to around 380,000 homes, and up to 420,000 homes in 2016.

Bankinter believes that, in 2015, sales of new homes in Spain will stand at close to 50,000, rising to between 70,000 and 80,000 new homes in 2016, and they indicated that the prospects for the sector continue to improve, with 2015 being the second consecutive year likely to end with an increase in home sales of close to 4%.

The entity also considers that the adjustment in prices has now ended, with 2015 being a year of stabilisation prior to a recovery, and does not believe that the construction of housing will return to the maximum

levels achieved in the years of the housing boom.

The possible upturn in demand in the residential real estate market for the next year will depend on the acceleration of economic growth, the conditions of access to financing and elevated liquidity as well as the renewed attraction of housing as an investment asset.

Bankinter highlighted the positive data such as the increasing volumes of investment in large portfolios of assets for subsequent rental and management, and the rise in the average rental income from offices and shopping centres, whose evolution will depend on changes in urban planning regulations and any political uncertainty which leads to the postponement of investment decisions.

Ultimately, El Economista reported that according to Bankinter, the real estate sector is once again presenting investment opportunities, and they consider that the best bet is for the purchase of real estate assets located in the “prime” locations of the big cities and in tourist areas, with the aim of gaining net profitability in the vicinity of 3% with a minimum period of investment of 3 to 5 years.

However, the performance of the sector will also depend on the progressive reduction in the population and the rate of unemployment, which they say will continue to be higher than 19%. kyero.com

A solicitor spoke the other day on television about the new directive 650/2012 explaining that is was essential that people retired in a country different of their country of nationality within the European Union revise their wills. What is all this about?

A. This regulation of the EU 650/2012 deals with different things, but the reason English citizens need to look at their will is that this new Regulation of the EU establishes that: When a person dies resident in one country of the European Union but national of another, the law applicable to his inheritance will be the one that he/ she has established expressly in his will and not the one established by the International Norms of each country (which may be in conflict). This is good news because an English national living in Spain can establish that he/she wishes English Law to rule his/ her inheritance and this will avoid any possible risk of claims from children against the spouse on the basis of the system of obligatory heirs established in Spanish law, which has always caused worry and concern in the case of children from different marriages etc.

If a person passes away after the 17th of August of 2015, unless he has said differently on his will the legislation applicable to his inheritance will be that of his country of last residence. This is very important for English people living in Spain, because under Spanish law you cannot leave everything to your wife as 2/3 of the estate have to be left to children. In other words

if you are resident of Spain, have children and do not establish on your will that you wish English Law (your national law ) to rule your inheritance your Spouse will not be allowed to receive his/her full inheritance as it would contradict the Spanish rules of obligatory heirs which would be applicable automatically because of the new regulation.

Consequences: 1. If you have children but have made a will leaving all assets to your spouse, make sure that you have clearly stated on your will that you wish your national law (English law) to rule your inheritance. If you have not, then you need to speak to a solicitor about this new European directive and add this statement to your will.

2.If you are married and you have been concerned with possible claims by your spouses children against your estate this risk can be completely removed by your spouse stating on her/his will that it should be English law that rules the inheritance. Conclusion: The new regulation has given much more strength to the testators /testatrix, letting them choose between English or Spanish Law, which is good, but precaution is a must because under the new regulation if nothing is said and you are a resident in Spain automatically the law applicable will be Spanish law which does not permit that spouses leave everything to each other if there are children.

To avoid nasty surprises visit your solicitor and ask if you need to change the wording of your will due to the new Regulation of the EU. 650/2012.

Real Estate Investment Revenues Rise

A recent report published by property portal, idealista.com, reveals that investing in real estate in Spain, in any of the products they analysed, offers a greater return than that registered 12 months ago, with even

the lowest returns offering double the profitability of the 10 year State bonds (2%).

According to the study, which looks at the sale and rental prices of different real estate products in order to calculate their gross profitability, commercial premises remain the most profitable real estate investment.

Buying commercial premises in Spain to rent out offers a gross return of 7.6%, compared to 6.2% a year ago, while offices offer a return of 6.3%.

In contrast, garages are the real estate product offering least profitability, with a return standing at 4.6% at the end of the second quarter, compared with the 3.6%

registered in June 2014.

Returns on investment in housing for rent have also increased during the last twelve months. Among the Spanish capitals, Lleida is the most profitable, with a gross return of 7.8%, followed by Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (6.2%), Palma de Mallorca (5.8%), Huesca (5.7%) and Huelva (5.7%), while the profitability offered in Madrid is 5%, slightly higher than that of Barcelona (4.8%).

However, the Spanish capitals with the lowest returns on rental housing are Ourense (3.3%), A Coruña (3.6%) and San Sebastián (3.8%), followed by Lugo (4%).

Business premises are the product with the greatest profitability in most of the capitals, with the highest returns being recorded in Cordoba (9.2%) and Granada (8.5%), followed

by Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (8.3%), Málaga (8.1%) and Zaragoza (8%), while the rental revenues in Madrid stood at 7.6%, and in Barcelona they stood at 7.5%.

Castellón, on the other hand, offers the least profitable return for investors on the rental of retail premises, at only 4.6%, followed by Salamanca (5.3%) and Cádiz (5.6%).

Once upon a time!

Once upon a time in a land far, far away lived a boy called Jack, which as we all know is short for ‘Loco Paco’. He lived with his widowed Mother who, to make ends meet was forced to weld boilerplates in their front parlour.

Their only asset was a three toed Brazilian Treehopper. With the downward turn in shipbuilding and the reduced need for boilerplates Paco and his Mum began feeling the pinch.

Well, his Mum certainly was but that’s another story. She decided the time had come to take Cuthbert, their Brazilian Treehopper to market. Paco was given strict instructions to go straight to market, talk to no one and get a good price for their digitally challenged Treehopper.

It was with heavy heart that Paco adjusted Cuthbert’s bridle and led him down the dusty road out of Alqueria.

The sun was shining and Paco picked wild flowers as Cuthbert galloped and gambolled along the roadside. On the dusty road Paco met a large wolf, who realising he was in the wrong fairy tale disappeared in search of a morsel of granny or a trio of tasty porkers. Again on the dusty road. This time Paco met José Boilpopo an itinerant carbuncle lancer from Mijas. José had an eye for a bargain. Seeing Paco was an imbecile he exchanged a handful of magic Remitroot beans for the precious three toed Brazilian Treehopper. Loco Paco was delighted, but then Loco Paco was delighted with the Liberal Democratic Party and dehydrated meals.

To say Paco’s Mother was impressed with her son’s business acumen wouldn’t be quite true. She made several references to father being like son,

which was slightly unfair as his father was only one possible on a shortlist of five. The beans where duly thrown through the nearest window. Paco was packed off to bed and his Mother began a meaningful relationship with a large bottle of domestic gin.

The morning dawned bright and fresh.

Paco, yawning and scratching stared in disbelief at a huge Remitroot stalk reaching into the clouds and beyond.

Paco, being inquisitive and an idiot promptly began climbing the stalk. Higher and higher he went, through the clouds and above until he was aware of a large figure descending. It was Bone Muncher Sanchez the feared giant of the stratosphere.

Paco nimbly reversed his course and was soon back on the ground. Grabbing a conveniently placed axe he swiftly chopped down the Remitroot stalk.

Down came the stalk and down came the giant. Stalk and giant lay broken, shattered upon the ground among the rubble and desolation that was once the whitewashed village of Alqueria.

Paco’s Mum stared down at the boy, the light of battle still shining bright in his eyes, the axe gleaming in his hand.

“Sometimes Paco you really p*** me off”. Said she.

Rooted Ambition

There are some rules in our house; some lines in the sand that may not be overstepped. One of those rules is No animals in the bedrooms. Another one is No cats on the kitchen table.

Her Royal Highness Sayyida Al Hurra, despite her lofty status, is impeccably mannered in such matters. However, her son, Mr Tommy Fluffypants, is not. He knows the rules, and makes it his personal business to disregard them – he has no scruples and no conscience whatsoever, just a rooted ambition to mould the world to his personal preference.

This is a typical encounter: ‘Tommy, get off the table.’ I lift him off and put him on the floor, from where he regards me with the round-eyed surprise of the totally innocent.

‘But I wasn’t on the table.’

‘Yes you were.’

‘That wasn’t me.’

‘Tommy, I’ve just picked you off the table, so yes, it was you.’

‘No, it wasn’t me. Some invisible aliens kidnapped my body and put it on the table.’

‘No Tommy, it was you. There are no invisible aliens, it was you, you bad kittencat.’

‘But if the aliens are invisible, how do you know they aren’t there?’

The unwavering round-eyed stare continued. I felt it was time to shift ground, my argument was in danger of being shot down – by a cat!

‘You have been watching too much television. Invisible aliens are kept safe inside the television and they can’t get out. You are a bad, bad kittencat. You are telling fibs, and

Classic car club Hotel Overa

Amigos del Coches Clasicos announces its monthly meetings are to be held at the Hotel Overa, junction 547 on the E15 / A7 near Huercal Overa, Almeria.

The move, from Aguilas, provides a more convenient and central meeting venue for its members within the Almanzora Valley and surrounding locality.

Meetings are held on the first Thursday of each month at 3.00pm and everyone owning or interested in classic cars will be made most welcome.

Membership is multi national and open to everyone interested in the restoration, preservation and use of classic cars.

Members’ cars are predominately Classic British and European Sports cars of the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. In general they are maintained, and in many cases, were restored by their owners.

A full calendar of events are organised, which includes monthly drives around the local area, social lunches and shows. A monthly e magazine is circulated to members and contains details of events, technical tips and articles on classic car ownership.

Franco’s Menu del Dia

There are few Guiris living in Spain who don't the Golden Rule : Don't talk about the Franco years. Sure, those who are highly educated and well read, very brave or plain stupid might attempt to venture a conversation on this matter with a passing Spanish acquaintance. As I quite clearly fall into neither category, I steer well clear.

The subject is reminiscent of the Faulty Towers sketch, except without a frog-marching John Cleese. Most Villages have their stories to tell about feuding families going back to the 1930's that are still far from forgotten.

Even in my Valley half of the villages gave their support to the pro-Franco forces, whilst the other has supported the revolutionaries and the animosity can almost be tasted in the air.

I don't pretend to have an understanding of causes and policies of the Spanish Civil war, and know that as a non-Spaniard I probably never will, and am never meant to. But I do know this : Quite possibly the only useful remaining legacy of the former dictator is the "Menu del Dia".

Some time around the early 1960s the practice was introduced by the authorities, whereby they enforced restaurants over and above a certain size, and open for more than a certain number of hours each week to provide an affordable and nutritious meal for the average Spanish worker without being forced to travel to and from their homes in the middle of the working day. Only those who have been living in a cave, or out of touch with society would need to be told that the Menu usually comprises of 2 or 3 courses, bread, wine and coffee.

The Spanish Menu del Dia is perhaps one of the most well known aspects of food and dining in Spain - and although the application of the term "affordable" can vary greatly, the value for money is almost always fantastic.

So without fear of inadvertently offending anybody, I think it is fair to say that the introduction of the Menu de Dia is quite possibly something that everybody would agree as being a popular measure.

My personal favourite is Calxon in the village of Orba, Alicante. A typical Spanish workman’s bar serving decent, honest home cooked food. A choice of three or four starters, an a similar number of main courses: whatever happens to be seasonal, or good value on the market that morning and prepared straight after purchase. The menu is committed to memory rather than written on a blackboard, with an endless supply of wine, water and bread & alioli on the table. Nobody takes this piss here. A slab of tarta, or the eponymous ‘flan’ and a coffee round of the meal for just 7 Euros.

Driving Over Lemons by Chris Stewart

Dark shadows clouded my dreams of the sunny farm bright with geraniums and orange blossom. A valley teeming with murderous snakes guarding the entrance to a place of stones and scorpions.

Most of us can empathise with Chris and Ana for deciding to move to an idyllic but challenging life in the mountains in Andalucia. Isn’t it everyone’s dream perhaps? Or perhaps that should read nightmare.

Chris found his paradise early on in his house-hunting days. La Herradura would have been his first choice but he was discouraged from purchasing it because of complications in multiple owners not wishing to sell.

His second choice was El Valero set amongst orange and lemon trees, olives and blossoming almonds.

What could be more Spanish or delightful to the eye?

A mountain farm, just what he desired.

My head was whirling with excitement; wild ideas and dreams pouring in.

Once the excitement levelled, he then realised why Pedro Romero was so keen to sell- a dam was going to be built across the gorge and flood the valley. In simple terms it meant that paradise would be flooded.

Paradise submerged is what he calls it. The nightmare begins right here.

Ana came to inspect the property and wasn’t particularly impressed and handed Chris a list of all the repairs needed before the house could become their home. Romero and his wife were still living at the farm and there was tension in the air: A thick silence ensued. I felt like a dead pig in a tea-room.

The Stewarts returned to the UK and the intention was to move within 9 months but like an overexcited child, Chris decided after 6 months to return, wanting to learn as much as he could about running the farm before Pedro finally moved out for good.

neighbours, Domingo and his parents. Domingo was an exceptional character showing an endless knowledge of the land and farming. He was wise as well as practically minded. When he was around, things that appeared impossible got done as if by magic.

Buying sheep was important to Chris but Ana had a few reservations.

No groom preparing a nuptial chamber for the arrival of his bride could have taken more care than I did in fixing the temporary stable.

His small moment of triumph came with the first lambs born on the farm. From then onwards the farm thrived on regular sales of lamb. An abundance of olives weighing 500k brought in extra income. As the future was becoming brighter, Ana announced her

35 pregnancy out of the blue to a shocked husband.

Were we really the sort of people to take in this awesome responsibility? Was the eccentric lifestyle we had chosen the right thing for a creature as delicate as a baby?

The answer had to be yes. During the labour, Chris kept fainting and had to be removed from the theatre. When a blue rubbery thing was plonked on a towel on the sideboard Chris was paranoid in case the baby was abnormal. Once this blue rubbery thing became recognisable as his daughter he felt very sentimental, transfixed and enslaved.

They called her Chloe. She was 3 when they christened her. They celebrated with paella and covered the tables with snowy cloths and wild flowers. Chloe had to be bribed with a bar of chocolate to allow Richard, the retired vicar, to anoint her with holy water and oil but the ceremony went without any hiccups. The informal congregation sang All Things Bright and Beautiful which soared across the valley gathering in strength.

We hear about the drought and the heavy rains, the flooding of the river, the awesome erosion when the mountains were almost being swept down to the sea, the sense of isolation, feeling disheartened and threatened. But they survived and became stronger as a family. Chloe thrived and the farm flourished. The Stewarts felt that buying El Valero had been the right decision and they were able to weather the storms.

These include laser positioning sensors, gesture-controlled systems and an ‘invisible’ bonnet that allows the driver to 'see through' the car to the ground beneath.

But the most Q-like development in the Discovery Vision Concept is remotecontrol drive, which allows anyone to drive the vehicle ‘at very low speed while not actually seated inside it'.

Land Rover says this system could be used on and off-road, from coupling a trailer to spotting obstacles during extreme off-road driving.

The off-road remote operation function has been dubbed All-Terrain Progress Control and the company claims that it will be ‘semi-autonomous.’

Off-road exploring is further helped by something known as ‘Wade Aid’ which measures depth in patches of water to prevent the vehicle from getting stuck.

Urcal Golf Report

Twenty four members and guests traveled down towards Almeria City to play at the Alboran course for their latest match on Saturday 1st August.

The competition was an Individual Stableford played for the Hamilton Cup.Conditions were hot and humid with a slight breeze and the course as always was in lovely condition.

Scores on the day were extremely good on the whole and the three guests had particularly excellent games.

Unfortunately being a cup game only members were eligible in the main competition but two guests carded particularly good scores with Martin England playing off a handicap of 23 carding 42 Stableford points with Mick Forrester scoring 37 points, Martin's wife Wendy England also had a good game with 33 points, all three received prizes for their efforts.

In the main competition Barry Kilby followed up his second place last time out with another beautifully constructed round and a score of 37points. Time for a reduction from his 14 handicap could now be merited.

Second place went to captain Steve Dodd with a creditable 36 points after a little time in the golfing wilderness

Steve seems to be at last finding some form again. Third place went to Keith Cabrera Lawn Bowling Club held Bott a new member who seems to be the third of its summer competitions in the prizes most weeks, Keith carded between 15th and 18th July a score of 33 points. culminating in the final being played on the 18th.

This is a very interesting competition.

As the name suggests it is mixed therefore men are drawn against other men or ladies so it makes for a level playing field. The game consists of two sets of nine ends and whoever wins the first set has the mat for the beginning of the second set. If they also win the second set then they win the game but if the opponent wins the second set making it one set all then it goes to a three end tie break and whoever wins two of the three ends is the overall winner.

was the runner up in the Gents Club Championship so a great match was anticipated and we were not disappointed. Peter took the first set 10-4 but Arthur fought back in the second set to win it 7-3. Another match going to a tie break. Peter won the first end and Arthur won the second so it was down to the last end to decide the winner. Arthur, the fighter that he is, won the third end and the competition.

Commiserations to Peter but many congratulations to Arthur for retaining his title, a fete not managed by many.

19th Hole Golf Society Match Report

Thursday 30th July the 19th Hole Golf Society played at the beautiful Aguilon Golf Resort. The condition of the course is perfect and a true credit to JJ and his staff who manage to keep the course looking like an Oasis amongst the surrounding barren ground.

As well as an Individual Stapleford, the players pencils had to cope with the additional competition (in the four player teams) -1,2,3, where only one best score counted on par threes, two best scores on par fours and three best scores on par fives.

The team of Zeta and Dave Denyer, Mike Esposito and Steve Tucker took first place with 70 points from the Tony Mackay team of John Ball Gary Grey and Mick Craswell on 69. The winning team’s success was due to the superb back nine played by Zeta, her score of 28 points really was the difference. Steve Tuckers main contribution to the day was by losing more balls than points scored -keep plugging away Steve.

In the Individual competition Zeta was uncatchable with a point’s score of 38 leaving Rob Banton and Nigel Greenwood on 34 points in 2nd and 3rd respectively.

Really good fun day of serious golf in perfect weather conditions, followed by nibbles and refreshments back at La Vida.

FA Cup holders Arsenal won the Community Shield for a second season in a row as they beat Premier League champions Chelsea at Wembley.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain scored the winner with a powerful drive into the top corner with his weaker left foot.

Ramires headed wide unmarked from Loic Remy's cross as Chelsea failed to hit the target before the break.

Eden Hazard skied a chance over the bar before Oscar's free-kick was parried wide by Arsenal debutant Petr Cech.

It was the first time the former Chelsea goalkeeper had been called into action - after 68 minutes of play - and soon after he comfortably held on to Kurt Zouma's header.

Arsenal went close late on through Santi Cazorla and Kieran Gibbs in a match where both sides looked rusty a week before their Premier League opener.

Monday’s individual stableford at Marina Phoenix on 27th July was a success for Margaret Budd who with 41 points had the best score on the day to win the ladies division beating all the men in the process. Rosalie Fardon (35) was second followed by Jean Wilkinson (30) in third. In the men’s division Les Armfield kept up his good run of form to win with 40 points. Steve Dimmock (39) secured second place, leaving José Urroz (37) to pick up third prize.

Thusday’s team game, played in fourballs, with the best three scores on par threes and the best two on the remainder, saw good scoring against

a par of 82. First with 96 points were Ali Mahmud, José Ramon, Alf Taylor and Jim Laing, followed, in second,

by John Ward, Rosalie Fardon, John Lally and Jim Budd (92). Isobel Jones, John Thompson, Steve Dimmock and Les Armfield (89) were third. There were nearest the pin prizes for Les Armfield (17) and Nadie Wass (5).
