Is Your BMW Engine Rattling on Acceleration? Here is What Could it Mean Introduction
Unusual sounds from essential parts like engine or transmission can make the car owners worry as there can be a serious issue. Some sounds are very much disturbing, annoying. Here I’m gonna talk about the rattling noise in BMW. If your BMW has such issue, then this article is for you. Rattling is generally an unpleasant sound caused when a metallic part is worn or damaged or a something is operating very roughly. Here you will know about the engine rattling while accelerating
Rattling noise from engine
Rattling noise from engine while accelerating usually occurs if there is more friction between some moving parts while operating. Rattling occurs mainly at the mechanical parts of the car for example, shafts, bearings, belts etc may get a wear or lack lubrication. Such parts make rattling noise while they operate.
Rattling noise from your engine can be said that the engine is crying for help. If there would be no fixes, then the cost of diagnosis would be more.
What commonly cause the engine to rattle while accelerating?
Here are some components in car where rattling sound occurs.
Faults in water pumps
Water pump supply coolant to the engine to reduce its temperature. Water pump have components like bearing and belts which can wear. This would lead to malfunctioning of water pumps too. Worn bearings in water pumps would produce a rattling sound especially when the car is accelerated. The water pump would work fast to supply coolant and the rattling noise would be quite noticeable.
Bad bearings in alternators
Alternator is just a generator that generates electric energy. Alternator also has bearings which makes the rotor rotate smoothly. But if the bearings become worn or rusted, then the rotor if the alternator would not rotate smoothly and produce a rattling sound.
Fault in the VANOS unit
The VANOS unit is one of the components that take part in the timing of camshaft. If there is some sludge buildup in the vapors unit, or the oil is more viscous, then the operation of the VANOS unit or the solenoid would be more difficult and rough. It would lead to a rattling sound.
Faulty catalytic converter
The catalytic converter in present in the exhaust system of the car but can produce rattling noise while the car is running or accelerating. Internal damage in the converter lead to such strange noise. The inner parts in the catalytic converter breaks down to pieces and rattle while the car accelerate.
Faults in hydraulic valve lifter
This components make the valves at the engine to operate. Mainly in older cars, such hydraulic valve lifters are used. If you have an older BMW model, then this part can be a culprit. Some wearing in this components would lead to rattling sounds while operating.
Failing pistons
If the pistons would be unable to move properly, then it would produce a rattling and grinding type sounds. Such issues in pistons would affect the engine performance heavily.
There are also other causes like broken glove box hinge, loose center console cover.
Conclusion
Rattling sounds are highly disturbing, it can easily spoil the moods of the passengers. Rattling noise is itself not a good sign for the health of your car. So you need to get your car diagnosed as soon as possible. A lack of maintenance becomes the main reason for engine to rattle. It is always advised to get the car maintained or serviced in a routine manner. People would ignore the servicing suffer the most. Inspection for rattling noise requires checking the whole engine compartment as well as some component in the exhaust. Have your BMW serviced at BMW service center.
