Welcome to today’s game against Gateshead.
Today’s programme notes focus on the current situation at the club and our thinking for the remainder of this season .
This is not a review of the season - that will come in May - but I will highlight a number of issues which have resulted in both inconsistent levels of performance and disappointing results
Let me be clear - I am as disappointed as any supporter with this season and will work tirelessly to learn the right lessons.
I will focus as much as I can on being objective and fact based rather than proffer unsubstantiated opinions which seem to characterise much of public debate these days. Naturally I will throw in my occasional opinion!
After last seasons heroics, we came into this season full of optimism and expectation.
The playing budget was increased modestly to more than c£1.1m and we - myself, Andy Whing and Stephen Ward - felt we had a stronger overall squad than the 2023/24 season, and indeed Whingy had secured all the transfer targets he wished for - bar one, Gatlin O’Donkor
Our objective was a home play off spot with a reasonable shot at top 3, notwithstanding the bigger budgets of 3/4 clubs
Budget is one element but the quality and efficiency of spend is crucial.
We also had momentum after last season - we know we had a strong foundation.
So what’s my assessment of the multiple factors that has led to the season being relatively disappointing
Firstly, and I am a late comer to subscribing to this view, there has been a hangover from the ultimate disappointment of last season.
Why this happens, to be frank, I don’t understand as we are in a professional business, but nevertheless both management and players have articulated this view.
This has meant that probably 5/6 of our most consistent performers in the 2023/24 season have not maintained their performance levels this season.
Next, and this is my opinion, the one player we didn’t manage to replace was Callum Maycock. In my view, he gave licence to Jamey Osborne to perform at his best.
Again, my view but based on a career in high performing environments, there was added pressure on the team and the management this season In many ways, 2023/24 was a free shot, with a new talented but unproven manager and lower expectations Perhaps we have struggled to deal with this pressure.
More fundamental has been our constant battle with injuries this season, especially non impact muscle injuries. Stephen Ward and the new manager are working hard to analyse and understand this fully
This has resulted in us being able to play our probably best first team in less than 5 games this season. It really is tough to perform in these circumstances.
Looking at the roll call of injuries, they have generally impacted our most established and crucial players including the following, which only focus on lengthy or multiple injury issues;
Tahvon Campbell - a critical loss for the whole season
Kyle Morrison - unavailable till December
Matt Warburton - multiple injuries
Jamey Osborne- multiple injuries
Jordan Tunnicliffe - missed 4 months
Jack Stevens - multiple injuries
Joss Labadie - multiple injuries
And now latterly, on top of Tahvon being out, we are missing Jamey Osborne, Jack Stevens and Connor Wilkinson
This issue alone goes along way to explaining our inconsistency and especially our current run of poor results.
The above has been compounded by a cataclysmic level of individual errors this season, most of which have resulted in conceding a goal and, for the first time in my time at Moors, failure to find a consistent solution at goalkeeper
As an analytical person, I do believe that one season is not sufficient for the rub of the green to balance out There will be statistical deviation in performance between seasons.
Over 2, maybe 3 seasons, this will regress to the mean but over shorter periods, luck can play a part - and, in my view, on balance we benefitted from good fortune last season and this has definitely not been the case this time around.
These are some of the elements that have contributed to where we are with 14 games to go.
Most importantly, we each start by looking at ourselves and whether we have performed at the necessary standard.
You have our collective commitment to addressing the issues highlighted above but I do think perspective is important
We have had an amazing 6/7 season and have been so close to promotion. Football is no different to life, there will be ups and downs.
The true measure of anyone is how they respond to adversity and I am 100% sure that we have a team in place that will bounce back strongly.
We most certainly haven’t written off this season, but realistically sneaking into the playoffs will require a monumental turnaround in form
We plan to bring in a couple of players to strengthen the squad short term with the prospect of Jack, Jamey and Connor being back in short order.
We are assessing all decisions in the context of planning for next season but whatever else, we are resolved to finish the season strongly and with momentum that will augur well for the next campaign
We are planning a fans forum before the end of the season but if any supporter has any questions, I am happy to respond by email in the meantime.
The best of the action with Richard King
Joe Newton in a collision with a Barnet defender, Kanu the standing defender appeared to push Newts in the back prior to the challenge, and he wasn’t at all pleased, and said a few words in his ear as they all got back up onto their feet.
Tipton in the classic “Star Fish “ pose as he puts a great ss into the box, unfortunately none of the Moors men e in a position to capitalize, to say Tippo wasn’t pleased uld be an understatement, I do hear quite a bit of the mmate chat from my pitchside position.
The Barnet keeper stars again in this one as he jumps to claim a cross intended for Jack Wells-Morrison.
Fletch celebrating his first goal for the club, pure emotion, I could have picked any of the series of celebration pictures to put in this section, unfortunately he then got too close for my camera to focus as he was greeted by the Moors faithful and his teammates.
Owen Evans the Barnet Keeper runs out of his area and clears the ball from the path of Fletcher Holman, I had seen the barnet man set off out of the corner of my eyeas the pass was played through the defence, I was looking through the viewfinder hoping Fletch would win the footrace and get a shot off, then the stopper appeared and cleared the ball into the next county.

Late heartache for Solihull Moors, as Owen Oseni's late winner was enough for Gateshead to claim a 1-0 win in the National League.
After surviving an onslaught of Heed attacks, in the first minute of stoppage time, Gateshead took the lead after a corner was taken short with Booty crossing to the far post for Oseni to head the ball home and make the score 1-0 with five minutes of stoppage time to play.

Alex Whitmore's late first-half equaliser was not enough for the Moors, as they would draw 1-1 against Wealdstone in the National League - picking up the first point under Matt Taylor.
In the fourth minute, the hosts took the lead through Alex Reid scoring against his former club. A long ball over the top of the Moors defence was chased by Reid, who had only Killian Barrett to beat. Reid placed the ball past the goalkeeper to make it 1-0.
In the final minute of the half, the Moors equalised through Alex Whitmore scoring his third goal of the campaign. A Jamey Osborne freekick was sent towards the far-post where Whitmore beat his marker, dived in and made it 1-1 before the break.

Solihull Moors' second-year squad earned a well-deserved victory in the National Academy League with goals from Kyle Moseley, James Richardson, and Omari Brown
The win extends their lead at the top of the table by three points as the season enters its final stretch. Under Mike Fowler’s guidance, the squad remains unbeaten in league competition since September 26th.
A fifth clean sheet of the season provided a strong foundation, aided by a switch to a back-three formation. Pearsall, Straker, and Danan stood firm defensively, well-supported by goalkeeper Joe Neeson.
The game started at a high tempo, with Moors creating early chances. The breakthrough came in the 25th minute when Moseley’s cross found Brown, who was fouled in the box, leading to a penalty.
Moseley stepped up and converted confidently. Despite further opportunities, Moors took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
The second half remained competitive, but Moors capitalized on key moments. A well-delivered Shinger corner saw Moseley rise highest to head home for 2-0. Shortly after, a move down the left led to Fielding crossing for Richardson, who volleyed in the third.
A late error from the Boston goalkeeper allowed Brown to add a fourth, sealing a solid win. The result moves Solihull Moors three points clear at the top as they continue their push for success.

Solihull Moors Women picked up another point last night after a scoreless draw against Worcester City.
Under the lights at Sixways Stadium, both teams started out positively, looking to make their mark on the game and it wasn’t long before Zoe Millington was called into action with a fantastic save denying Worcester of the lead.
As the half progressed, Moors continued to work hard and drive to create opportunities for themselves
A goal mouth scramble nearly put the hosts ahead, but some superb defensive work led to the ball landing in the arms of Millington, leaving the score level at the break.
HT- Worcester City 0-0 Solihull Moors Women
As the half opened up, Moors found their footing with Marsha Malik going through on goal, but Worcester’s #1 was quick off her line to clear the ball.
The home side come close to breaking the deadlock once again, with a long strike from Jasmin Springer, but was wonderfully blocked by Millington.
Despite the fantastic efforts of everyone, the score remained unbroken at full-time.
FT- Worcester City 0-0 Solihull Moors Women
Next fixture: Sunday 23rd February –Peterborough United (A)
It wasn’t long before a late minute opportunity opened up the other end, with Daina Scott flicking the ball on to Malik whose footwork opened up space for Skye Wright on the left, but her shot wasn’t able to trouble the keeper.
