EALES DARRYL

Welcome to a special day in the football calendar - the 1st round of the FA Cup!

Today, we host Maidstone United who have an enviable FA Cup pedigree and we extend a warm welcome to their fans, players and officials.

We were delighted to sneak past Altrincham in the last round on penalties after 2 hard fought games.

For the first time in the 1st round, there will be no replay if the sides are level at 90 minutes so we will go straight to extra time and penalties, if necessary, so the winner is decided on the day

Personally, I would have preferred that there was no change to the competition format and replays were maintained. I’m sure everyone has their view!

The cup weekend means we have a break from the League programme and after 16 games, it’s appropriate to take stock.

Andy Whing, Stephen Ward and myself had such a meeting earlier this week and the headlines includes the following:

frustration with the number of injuries which has disrupted team selection on too many occasions

belief that we have a squad that should be challenging at the top end of the table

Generally a feeling that we had left 6-8 points in the pitch and should be much more firmly entrenched in the play of positions

reasonable satisfaction that our style of play is developing positively and desire to front foot more often as it suits the talent and make up of the squad

the crucial importance of the next 10 games so we pick up sufficient points to put the upper reaches within closer touch

Overall, we are in good shapes, the culture is positive and increasing optimism for our progress over the next few months.

Back to today, and from a personal perspective, the FA Cup retains its excitement and we are still in the mix to try and reach the 3rd round for the first time in the clubs history.

Maidstone will be similarly excited about their own ability to progress so it should be a rousing game and let’s hope we can edge it!

Best wishes

MATCH ACTION

GATESHEAD SOLIHULL 1 0

Heartache for the Moors, as a late Owen Oseni winner saw Gateshead win 1-0 at the Gateshead International Stadium.

The match began with Gateshead create a chance after a minute as they worked the ball to the right-hand side where Luke Hannant hit a shot towards the near post, but Laurie Walker made a strong save before the Moors cleared up-field.

A minute later, the Moors broke on the counterattack with Conor Wilkinson running through on goal and having only the keeper to beat. However, Tiernan Brooks made the save to stop the low shot from Wilkinson.

On eight minutes, Robbie Tinkler sent a loose back pass that caused Brooks problems with the ball narrowly avoiding the goal and going wide for a corner.

On 20 minutes, Jamey Osborne sent a corner to the far post which was met by Alex Whitmore. Whitmore’s low header was heading towards goal but was tipped behind the post by Brooks.

On 35 minutes, Jack Stevens picked the ball up on the left-hand side before cutting inside and shooting towards the near post, but Brooks made a comfortable save to stop the shot.

A minute later, Brandon Haunstrup on the left-hand side crossed a dangerous cross for Hannant to head at the far post. However, his header went over the bar.

In the second half, the hosts continued to look for an opener with Gateshead creating a chance on 51 minutes. Callum Whelan had time to shoot inside the box but passed the ball for Ben Worman, who forced a good save from Walker to keep the ball out.

63 minutes in, Owen Oseni controlled a long ball forward before turning and having a powerful shot towards Walker’s goal, but the ball flew just wide of the goal.

A minute later, Gateshead had a massive chance as Booty passed the ball to Tyrelle Newton, who skied the ball over the bar.

On 68 minutes, Olly Tipton had shot on edge of box after some good Moors play, but the shot went wide of the goal. Six minutes later, Jacob Butterfield had a shot on the edge of the box after some good play from the hosts. But Walker made a brilliant save to tip the ball over.

In the first minute of stoppage time, Gateshead took the lead after a corner was taken short with Booty crossing to the far post for Oseni to head the ball home and make the score 1-0.

A break from the National League next for the Moors, as we host Maidstone United in the FA Cup First Round at Damson Park.

Solihull Moors’ FA Cup run came to an end at the Toughsheet Community Stadium as they were beaten 4-0 by high-flying Bolton Wanderers in the First Round.

On 39 minutes, the League One side took the lead following a corner. Aaron Morley’s cross was met by their captain Ricardo Santos who headed home to make it 1-0.

Bolton scored a second after 52 minutes through Maghoma. A loose pass saw Bodvarsson’s effort roll towards goal and had to be cleared by James Clarke, but his clearance could only find Maghoma who scored at the near-post to double the Trotters’ lead.

Clarke pulled off an unbelievable clearance from a Bodvarsson cross as it looked destined to be three however, the following corner did result in Bolton’s third as William Forrester headed home to increase their lead.

on 86 minutes, Dion Charles did have his goal for the League One side as he controlled the ball inside the penalty area before turning and making it 4-0.

ACTIONSHOTSWITHDICKY

The present and future of the goalkeeping union, Laurie and Arron were coming across the running track, going out for the warm up, as I raised the camera to take a picture Laurie put his arm around Aaron, and this is the result, for me it shows friendship, team spirit and a mutual respect for each others talents.

Marcel Oakley down the Moors right flank, for me this encompasses a 5050 ball and the physicality of the National League, I’m pretty sure won this battle and was able to cross the ball, Marcel has already demonstrated his abilities in the short time he has been at Solihull, he one of the 1st in the queue for his pictures post game, and also the 1st to express his thanks.

James Gale in full fall mode, Gales had not long been introduced into the fray and was trying to retreive an over hit cross, I like this picture as you Know Gales is definitely going to hit the deck whilst the defender is balancing himself, ready to clear up for his team, despite his protestations for a foul the referee was having none of it.

Wilko fires a shot early on in the encounter, nice picture as Conor’s leg is at full stretch as is the defenders, and the ball is also in the frame, which is always a bonus for me, I that effort had hit the net hat a different game it would have been with the Moors 1 up after two minutes.

All the faces looking to the heavens at a corner, I love this type of picture and have captured similar in all the forms of football I cover, Whits at the front post with Ex-Moor Callum Whelan, who has developed into an integral part of the Gateshead starting line up.

WOMENS

MATCH ACTION

SOLIHULL LEAFIELD 0 3

Solihull Moors fell to defeat at Studley Sports Centre against Leafield Athletic in FAWNL action.

Both teams came out starting positively, looking to make their mark on the game. However, it was Leafield who took an early lead on the 3-minute mark, as Lowe found herself in the box, and after a scramble, poked the ball across the line.

It wasn’t long before an opportunity opened up down the other end with a lovely strike from Malik who tested Leafield’s Bell from outside the box, but the effort proved to be a routine save for the keeper.

Moors looked to fight back as the half progressed, continually pressing to make it even. However, Leafield took an even further lead after firing the ball into the bottom corner from a free kick, minutes before the referee brought the half to a close.

Moors came back out with a revived approach, and within 5 minutes, Gordan made a tremendous effort but saw it sail over the crossbar.

As time went on, both teams continued to create opportunities for themselves and Leafield came close to their third but was remarkably blocked by Chambers just before the line.

Not long after the halfway point of the second half, one to watch, Evangeline Gallop, found herself making a breakthrough down the middle and striking the ball from 18 yards out.

Moors continued to push for the last few minutes hoping to narrow the gap but as the game drew to a close, a saved free kick left the final score 0-3.

Despite the fantastic efforts made by everyone, Moors were unable to get back into the game as the whistle blew for full-time.

Moors are next in action in the cup as they take on Burton Albion away from home.

MEET THE BOSS

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS

Maidstone’s manager will need no introduction to most fans of the English game, having made his name at Wolverhampton Wanderers, playing for the Black Country club in both the Premier League and Championship. He retired from playing professional football in May 2022 but wasn’t away from the game for long, becoming manager in January 2023. In his first full season, he led his team to the fifth round of the Emirates FA Cup – a club record.
